- Chapter 20 - Love Without Expectation
The private cinema was equipped with high-end gear. Jiang Nian thought that watching a blockbuster with top-tier effects in this setting must be incredibly immersive.
But for a romance movie, the perfect atmosphere only made things worse.
On screen, the current scene was a classic jealousy trope. The Alpha woman, upset that her wife was being pursued by a close friend, was pacing furiously in her room, fuming in silence.
Jiang Nian stared at the Alpha’s expressions and gestures—they looked familiar. Where have I seen that before? It was eerily recognizable.
As the film neared its end, the two female leads embraced, gazing deeply into each other’s eyes. The background music swelled, the mood reaching its peak.
The female Alpha gently cupped the Omega’s face, eyes brimming with tears, and whispered, “Darling, I’m jealous, I can’t let go, and I want you to be happy—all because I love you.”
Hearing this, the Omega’s tears slid down her jaw. She slowly closed her eyes, waiting for her lover’s kiss.
Every word from the movie Alpha pierced Jiang Nian’s heart. Everything that character thought, felt, and did… mirrored her own reality.
If this is love in a film, then what is it in real life?
That question sent Jiang Nian’s breathing into disarray. She couldn’t help but sneak a glance at Qiao Wenyu sitting beside her.
The faint glow from the screen softened Qiao Wenyu’s profile, blurring her delicate features into a dreamy haze. Jiang Nian immediately turned her head back to the screen.
Don’t let beauty distract you!
She made up her mind. As long as she didn’t look at Qiao Wenyu’s face, she wouldn’t mistake this feeling for love.
But…
Qiao Wenyu’s presence was still right there. Jiang Nian could sense it clearly. She knew exactly how Qiao Wenyu smiled, how she spoke, how she pressed her lips together in silence. Even with her eyes closed, she could recall every detail.
How could she ever forget?
She couldn’t. Qiao Wenyu was no longer just a character from a book. She was someone who could cry, laugh, and needed protection—her sister.
Back in the movie, the two leads had finished their intimate moment. The Omega, eyes still wet, said emotionally, “Thank you for loving me.”
Jiang Nian saw the Omega’s face morph into Qiao Wenyu’s. Her heart almost leapt out of her chest.
The credits began to roll. The soundtrack echoed softly.
Qiao Wenyu stood up. “Xiao Nian, I just…”
Jiang Nian was still lost in a haze of thoughts.
“Xiao Nian,” Qiao Wenyu repeated, raising her voice.
Jiang Nian finally snapped out of it. Seeing Qiao Wenyu’s face, she couldn’t even tell whether she was still in a dream.
“What is it?”
“I just got a message from my agent. There’s a family gathering tonight—I need to head back early.” Qiao Wenyu’s eyes held a hint of sorrow. “My father is very strict. I have to arrive early. Xiao Nian, I’m leaving now.”
Jiang Nian quickly stood up and grabbed Qiao Wenyu’s soft, smooth arm. “Wait, Sister. I’ll go with you. I’m your partner, after all.”
“Forget it, Xiao Nian. My family… is complicated,” Qiao Wenyu said gently, then turned and left the room.
Jiang Nian watched her go, worry building in her chest. She immediately called Qiao Wenyu’s agent.
“Don’t let her get bullied. If anything happens, tell me right away,” she said, her voice low and steady, like a cello’s deep resonance, her phoenix eyes narrowing.
After hanging up, Jiang Nian was about to start the car and head home when her phone lit up again—another call from Jiang Fenyun.
The background was noisy. Clearly, Fenyun was in a crowded place.
She sounded exasperated. “Sis, my cousin just flew back, and after one meeting, she left again. There goes my date!”
“Aren’t you going to thank me?”
“I do thank you,” Fenyun sighed, “but my heart’s broken for real. I missed out on another date with Wenyu—I’m genuinely upset, okay?” She sniffled dramatically, then added, “Also, when I walked my cousin out of the office just now, I mentioned I was pursuing Wenyu, and she didn’t look happy at all.”
“Your cousin cares that much?” Jiang Nian asked, scanning the lot for her car.
Fenyun’s voice perked up. “Right? It was weird. As soon as I said I was chasing someone named Qiao Wenyu, her face changed. Scared me half to death. She even booked a flight back and said once she settles her business overseas, she’s moving back here to develop things.”
“That’s good, right? You hate the 9-to-9 work grind. If she comes back, she can take over the company,” Jiang Nian said, getting into the driver’s seat.
Fenyun laughed. “No way. She’s Bai, I’m Jiang. Her company and mine are completely unrelated.”
The moment Jiang Nian heard “Bai,” a name flashed through her mind—Bai Ye, the original lead Alpha from the book, the one who loved Qiao Wenyu so fiercely it bordered on obsession.
No way…
“What’s your cousin’s name?” Jiang Nian asked, unable to help herself.
“Bai Ye,” Fenyun replied, puzzled. “Why are you so curious about my cousin?”
The name hit Jiang Nian like a hammer. Her brows furrowed deeply.
The one who could make Qiao Wenyu happy… who could shield her from storms… who could give her a real home… had finally shown up.
“…I’m hanging up.” Jiang Nian’s heart sank. She tossed the phone aside.
It hit the floor with a soft clatter—but she didn’t care.
Starting the car, Jiang Nian pulled onto an empty road. She floored the gas pedal, the trees on either side blurring as they flew past.
Before being transported into the novel, Jiang Nian never understood why rich kids liked to race cars. Now, she did.
Speeding wasn’t just about thrill—it was indulgence, release, and catharsis.
After leaving the empty expressway, Jiang Nian’s emotions began to settle. She had finally come to a realization.
She liked Qiao Wenyu—really liked her. The kind of tender affection that blooms during first love. The feeling had been buried so deep, it took her this long to understand it.
But it was probably too late now. The real partner—the one from the book—was already on her way back. What could Jiang Nian possibly offer in comparison?
Still, her low spirits faded as quickly as they had come. Jiang Nian made up her mind: before Bai Ye returned, she would continue protecting Qiao Wenyu. Even if it meant paving the way for someone else, she was willing.
As she reached this resolution, she noticed the phone glowing on the passenger seat. She picked it up, confused.
It was a location pin from Qiao Wenyu’s agent—some private estate. Below it was a message warning that Qiao Wenyu was often mistreated by her family and that someone should accompany her.
Jiang Nian’s heart sank. She set the GPS and drove toward the estate at full speed.
At that same moment, Qiao Wenyu stood before her father.
Yan Zhong sat in a rattan chair, stern-faced and imposing. Even in silence, he radiated oppressive authority.
“Father,” Qiao Wenyu said, head bowed, not daring to meet his eyes.
Yan Zhong raised his lids and scrutinized her from head to toe before scoffing coldly. “You haven’t been fully marked? What kind of wife are you to Jiang Nian!”
Qiao Wenyu’s body trembled.
“Don’t pretend to be timid with me. I know you’re not afraid,” Yan Zhong said, his brow furrowing deeply. “You were married off to produce heirs for the Jiang family. You’re supposed to fulfill your duties as Jiang Nian’s partner. Yet here you are, still flaunting yourself in the entertainment industry. I’ve already blocked your resources—how are you still getting offers?”
The air inside the hall grew unbearably tense. The nearby servants held their breath, too scared to make a sound.
“My daughter…” Yan Zhong stood up, his towering figure casting a shadow over Qiao Wenyu. “Stop playing games. You can’t fool me, and you’ll never defy me.”
Qiao Wenyu remained in a submissive posture, but her hands—clenched tightly by her sides—were ghost-white from the pressure.
“Get out of my sight,” Yan Zhong snapped, eyes closed, his voice steeped in fury.
Once she left the room and the door shut behind her, Qiao Wenyu’s expression changed entirely. The timid, gentle look was gone, erased like chalk. In its place: dark, calculating eyes brimming with hatred and cold restraint.
Soon, relatives from the Yan family began arriving at the estate one after another.
In these so-called family gatherings, Qiao Wenyu—Yan Zhong’s own daughter who “wasn’t worthy of the Yan name”—always became their favorite target.
By the time Jiang Nian arrived, Qiao Wenyu had already been shoved to the ground by Yan Zhong’s other children and a few distant relatives. Her lips were pale, and her arms trembled as she tried to push herself up.
“What are you doing?!” Jiang Nian rushed forward, shielding Qiao Wenyu with her body. The moment she touched her, she caught the strong scent of Alpha pheromones in the air.
They were using pheromone suppression to bully her. And given Qiao Wenyu’s unstable condition—her pheromone deficiency—it was downright cruel and dangerous.
“You are…?” Yan Fu, Yan Zhong’s eldest son, was a classic spoiled heir. He never looked anyone in the eye, and his gaze at Jiang Nian was filled with provocation.
Rage surged in Jiang Nian’s chest. Her red-wine-scented pheromones exploded outward, flooding the garden with their powerful presence.
A top-tier Alpha’s release. The pressure hit Yan Fu like a truck.
“You’re Qiao Wenyu’s… wife?” He struggled to withstand the direct assault of her pheromones. “Calm down, President Jiang. If you stir up trouble here, who do you think my father will side with?”
“My name is Jiang. Not Yan. And I don’t care who your father supports. Wenyu doesn’t carry the Yan name either, but she’s my wife—of course I’ll protect her.”
Jiang Nian’s smile was calm, but her words were like steel. “Young Master Yan, bullying your own Omega sister in public… aren’t you ashamed?”
“You—!” Yan Fu was speechless. After a long pause, he finally sneered, “Who the hell acknowledged her as a sister? Her dirty slut of a mother—how could she possibly have Yan bl00d? Qiao Wenyu, you probably don’t even have my father’s DNA in you. And you still dare show your face here?”
Qiao Wenyu, used to being humiliated, endured in silence. No matter how vicious their words, she had swallowed it all over the years. Her mother’s honor was constantly trampled on, and her cold-blooded father had never lifted a finger to stop it.
Why? Because Qiao Wenyu had once shown brilliance—a level of talent that made Yan Zhong feel threatened.
She was the one who resembled him the most. And for that very reason, he despised her the most.
A man as arrogant and vain as Yan Zhong couldn’t stand to see anyone surpass him. Not even his own child. Especially not a daughter born from what he considered a “mistake.”
Jiang Nian knew nothing of Qiao Wenyu’s past. All she knew was—she wanted to protect her.
She liked her. That was enough.
Even if Qiao Wenyu didn’t know it, Jiang Nian was going to stand up for her.
Yan Fu kept flinging insults, his mouth foul and relentless.
Then, in a flash, Jiang Nian punched him square in the face. A top Alpha’s strength was no joke. She sent him sprawling to the ground effortlessly.
Stunned, Yan Fu clutched his bleeding lip in shock.
Silence fell over the entire scene.
Qiao Wenyu stared at Jiang Nian, astonished. The look in her eyes shifted—again and again.
