- Chapter 22 - Mark and Claim Her
Jiang Nian had planned out the entire seven-day vacation schedule. When she woke up, her mood was radiant. Just the thought of having her big sister all to herself for the next few days made her metaphorical puppy tail wag with joy.
Auntie Wang had already prepared breakfast. When she saw Jiang Nian coming downstairs, all smiles and sunshine, she couldn’t help but grin as well.
“Good morning, Miss,” she greeted. “You look like you’re in a great mood.”
“Of course I am,” Jiang Nian replied cheerfully. “Who wouldn’t be happy on vacation?” She glanced around. “Is Wenyu not up yet?”
Auntie Wang wiped her hands on her apron. “No, Miss Qiao hasn’t come down.”
“Let her sleep a bit more then,” Jiang Nian said as she sat down and sipped on a glass of soy milk, her mind already wandering to all the quality time she and Qiao Wenyu would share later.
Even after finishing breakfast, Qiao Wenyu still hadn’t appeared. Believing it was normal to sleep in while on vacation, Jiang Nian leisurely strolled to the villa’s front garden.
Though the garden was regularly tended to, Jiang Nian was in such high spirits that she picked up a watering can and began watering the flowers herself, occasionally humming a tune.
After a while, she carried a small potted plant back inside and placed it by the entrance. Glancing up at the clock, she realized it was already past 10 a.m. Even for a lazy morning, wasn’t this a bit too much?
Feeling that something was off, she went upstairs and stood outside Qiao Wenyu’s bedroom. She knocked gently.
No response.
Knock knock knock—she knocked louder this time.
Still no sound from inside.
Jiang Nian had no choice but to open the door. The moment she did, a heavy wave of pheromones hit her like a tidal wave, nearly making her dizzy. The rich rose-scented omega pheromone filled the room with a heady fragrance. Her gaze was instinctively drawn to the bed.
Qiao Wenyu’s skin was unnaturally flushed. Her eyes were tightly shut, her brows furrowed. She kept tossing and turning, the strap of her silk nightgown slipping down, revealing a smooth, pale shoulder.
“Ugh… who’s there?” Qiao Wenyu’s voice was dazed and weak, barely conscious of someone entering.
Jiang Nian, as a normal, fully matured, and high-quality Alpha, found it nearly impossible to resist such potent pheromones from a highly compatible omega.
She wanted so badly to pounce on Qiao Wenyu, pin her down, sink her teeth into that fair skin, and inject her glandular fluid—marking her forever as Jiang Nian’s.
Her mind buzzed with primal urges:
Claim her. Mark her. Make her yours.
“Xiao… Nian?” Qiao Wenyu struggled to remain conscious. She dug her nails into her own arm to stay lucid. “My suppressant… downstairs… I-I’m in… heat…”
Jiang Nian gripped the doorframe, forcing her Alpha instincts to stand down. She clamped her hand over her nose, trying to block out the intoxicating scent, and fought hard to keep her own pheromones under control.
“Okay,” she replied hoarsely. “I’ll have Auntie Wang bring it up. She’s an Omega too—she won’t pose a threat to you.” Jiang Nian turned and hurried downstairs, practically fleeing the room.
Auntie Wang was cleaning in the living room when she noticed Jiang Nian descending in a panic. Concerned, she asked,
“Miss, what’s wrong? You look pale.”
“Wenyu’s… in heat,” Jiang Nian said, trying to keep her voice steady. “Please bring the suppressant from the medical kit upstairs. Stay with her, and if anything changes, let me know immediately.”
Auntie Wang nodded quickly, dropped her rag, and rushed upstairs with the medical kit.
Jiang Nian paced anxiously downstairs. She couldn’t stop worrying about Qiao Wenyu. Every omega had their own heat cycles, but Qiao Wenyu didn’t have a bonded Alpha. Without that intimate connection, she had to endure everything on her own.
The thought made Jiang Nian frown deeply.
If only I could mark her, she thought. I would help her through this so gently…
But it was just wishful thinking. As a nominal, unbonded Alpha, all she could do was stand helplessly downstairs, pacing like a caged animal.
It wasn’t until after noon that Auntie Wang came down and told her, “Miss Qiao finally fell asleep. Her fever has gone down. She just needs rest and good food to regain her strength.”
“Did she say anything?” Jiang Nian asked urgently.
Auntie Wang shook her head. “She was in too much pain to speak. But… once she wakes up, she’ll need plenty of energy. Lots of food. Ah, right—omegas crave sweets during this time. I’ll go make some cake.”
“I’ll do it,” Jiang Nian offered quickly. “I want to do something for her.”
“But Miss, shouldn’t you be with her during this time…? Married omegas who keep using suppressants—it’s bad for their health.” Auntie Wang’s implication was crystal clear: she was encouraging Jiang Nian to help Qiao Wenyu through her heat personally.
Jiang Nian flushed. “Ahem… we’re not at that stage yet.”
“Aiyoh, Miss! You can’t be so shy! An Alpha has to be more assertive when it comes to someone they love,” Auntie Wang advised.
“We’re still young… there’s no rush.” Jiang Nian cleared her throat, then changed the topic. “Can you teach me how to bake the cake instead?”
“No, no, you’re the young lady of the house. I can’t possibly let you cook.”
“I want to make something for her myself.”
Seeing Jiang Nian’s resolve, Auntie Wang smiled, the corners of her eyes crinkling with fondness. “Miss, your affection for Miss Qiao runs deep and true.”
“Is that so…” Jiang Nian murmured, suddenly shy.
She spent the entire afternoon in the kitchen, following Auntie Wang’s instructions step by step. But she was clumsy—sometimes adding too much flour, other times too much water. It took her ages just to get the cake base right.
“It’s alright, Miss. Don’t worry. You’re not used to doing this—it’s normal to get the proportions wrong,” Auntie Wang said gently, patiently cleaning up the mess Jiang Nian had made.
Jiang Nian gave an awkward laugh. “Yeah, you’re right.”
In her original world, she was a total disaster in the kitchen. Now, in this new body that had never so much as touched kitchenware, her lack of skill was even more justifiable.
After multiple failed attempts, Jiang Nian finally managed to bake the cake base successfully.
Once the cream was spread, she picked up the piping bag, hunched over the cake, and began decorating it carefully, mimicking the floral design from a photo on her phone.
Auntie Wang chimed in with praise again, “Miss, you’ve put so much effort into this. I’m sure Miss Qiao will be very happy when she tastes it.”
At that moment, Qiao Wenyu, now feeling better, had just walked out of her room. She quietly stood by the kitchen door, watching Jiang Nian fumble about, her back busy and flustered.
Jiang Nian, fully focused, finished piping a rose, then got creative and added two tiny cream figures cuddled together on top of the cake.
“Miss, these little figures are…?” Auntie Wang asked curiously.
Jiang Nian smiled without realizing it. “That’s me and Wenyu. Cute, right?”
“They’re adorable. So sweet, it makes this old woman jealous,” Auntie Wang teased.
“I think they’re sweet too,” Jiang Nian said softly, her smile fading just a little. She suddenly realized that even her cake decorations were filled with beautiful, yet unrealistic, fantasies.
Qiao Wenyu, still hiding just out of sight, heard everything Jiang Nian and Auntie Wang said. She also noticed Jiang Nian’s brief moment of sadness. Her eyes softened for a moment, but after the fleeting wave of emotion, she quietly returned to the living room and sat down on the sofa.
Back in the kitchen, Jiang Nian busied herself a while longer. When the cake was finally done, she crossed her arms and admired it.
“Looks like I made ‘big sister’ a little chubbier… but to me, she’s still the best-looking,” Jiang Nian said, crouching down to inspect the cream figures closely nestled together.
Auntie Wang took the cake and sliced a piece. “Miss, I’ll take this to Miss Qiao.”
But after just a few steps, she exclaimed, “Miss Qiao! You’re up? Are you feeling better?”
Jiang Nian quickly walked out of the kitchen and saw Qiao Wenyu sitting calmly on the sofa.
“Big sister, are you feeling any better?”
“Much better,” Qiao Wenyu replied. “Xiao Nian, did you make this cake?”
Jiang Nian’s eyes sparkled like a puppy eager to please. “Mm-hmm!”
Qiao Wenyu gave a faint, somewhat awkward smile. “But I’m… not really into sweets.”
In truth, she loved them.
But she had gotten used to avoiding them.
Back when she had feelings for Bai Ye, she had given up sweets—because he didn’t like them. She had forced herself to match his preferences.
Jiang Nian’s face fell a little upon hearing that.
“Miss Qiao,” Auntie Wang jumped in to mediate, “no omega dislikes sweets during their heat cycle. This was made especially for you. Give it a try?”
Faced with both of them, Qiao Wenyu couldn’t refuse. She picked up the plate and took a bite—for the first time in what felt like forever.
The soft cream melted on her tongue, the sweetness wrapping around her senses, lifting her mood.
She took another bite. Her eyes welled with tears, blurring her vision.
When she was young, she loved cake—but no one ever bought it for her. Then she met Bai Ye during the years she most craved sweets, and gave them up for him.
Now, after so many years, eating cake again felt like a dream.
“Big sister, why are you crying? Was it… that bad?” Jiang Nian rushed to her side, flustered. “If it’s bad, don’t eat it! I knew I shouldn’t have made it… I can’t bake…”
“No.” Qiao Wenyu wiped her eyes, her voice soft and tinged with emotion. “I like it. I really like it.”
Jiang Nian was deeply moved by her words, her heart tightening.
“As long as you like it… that’s all I wanted.”
Being liked by you—that’s the best outcome I could ask for.
Qiao Wenyu dabbed her tears again. “I’m just a bit sensitive today… It’s my cycle, makes me emotional. Don’t mind me.” She didn’t tell the full truth, brushing off her tears as just a symptom.
Jiang Nian reached out her hand. “Since you’re not feeling well, how about I carry you back to bed?”
Auntie Wang chuckled to herself and quietly slipped away, wearing an amused “auntie smile.”
Qiao Wenyu looked at Jiang Nian’s outstretched hand and, after a brief hesitation, took it.
“Come on, big sister,” Jiang Nian said gently, offering her arm.
Qiao Wenyu hooked her arms around Jiang Nian’s neck.
They were close—close enough to hear each other’s heartbeat.
To ease the awkwardness, Jiang Nian joked, “Big sister, you’re so light. But you can’t skip meals just to look good on camera, okay?”
“I look bad when I gain weight. I used to be chubby as a kid—my features were all squished together.”
“I’d still like you, even if you gained weight,” Jiang Nian said instinctively, then realized how intimate that sounded and quickly added, “What matters is your health. Fat or thin, as long as you’re healthy, I’ll be happy. Truly.”
Qiao Wenyu lowered her gaze. “Mm.”
Once back in the bedroom, Jiang Nian gently laid her on the bed and pulled the covers over her.
“Rest well, I won’t disturb you,” she said.
But Qiao Wenyu tugged on her sleeve, eyes lowered in embarrassment. “Wait… I… I want a little of your pheromones. Is that okay?”
Of course Jiang Nian wouldn’t refuse. Standing beside the bed, she slowly released a stream of soothing pheromones.
“Xiao Nian, sit with me for a while. Standing there must be tiring.”
Surprised but pleased, Jiang Nian nodded and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “I won’t do anything.”
“Xiao Nian… can you stay a bit longer? Your pheromones make me feel so safe…” Qiao Wenyu’s voice was soft, almost like a plea.
“Alright.”
Qiao Wenyu gradually closed her eyes and soon fell into a deep sleep.
Jiang Nian leaned against the headboard and couldn’t help inching closer.
As if sensing her presence even in sleep, Qiao Wenyu shifted toward her, her cheek pressing softly into Jiang Nian’s palm. Her sleeping expression became more peaceful.
Jiang Nian’s heart thudded wildly.
The room was filled with the scent of roses—her favorite person’s pheromones. Watching her sleep so trustingly beside her, Jiang Nian silently wished this moment could last forever.
She wanted to stay longer, but knowing Qiao Wenyu was still in a sensitive state, she was afraid of losing control. She decided to quietly slip away.
Just as she moved to leave, Qiao Wenyu murmured in her sleep, her voice trembling slightly with a sob:
“Don’t go… don’t go…”
Jiang Nian froze.
She quickly returned to the bed, gently pulling Qiao Wenyu into her arms and whispering,
“I’m here, big sister. I’m here.”
And so they remained, holding each other close—until Jiang Nian unknowingly drifted off to sleep as well.
Not long after, her phone vibrated in her pocket, waking her.
Groggy, she picked it up.
The caller ID read: Jiang Xian.
Jiang Nian sat bolt upright. Afraid of disturbing Qiao Wenyu, she tiptoed out of the room.
Once the door was closed, she answered the call.
Her mother’s furious voice roared through the phone:
“You reckless girl! How dare you offend Yan Zhong? Get back here immediately!”
