- Chapter 13 - Green Peppers
Lin Xiaoyou’s sudden tears left Lin Changsheng flustered. Why would her sister start crying just from seeing her?
Had the original owner done something terrible to her sister?
She quickly stepped forward to comfort her.
Although Lin Changsheng wasn’t originally from this world, seeing someone who looked exactly like her own sister from her past life stirred deep emotions within her.
Since there was no way to return to her previous world, she thought, it wouldn’t be so bad to treat this sister as her real one.
Still, a faint sadness lingered in her heart.
“Jie, why are you crying?” she asked gently.
Perhaps it was Lin Xiaoyou’s crying that alarmed Gu Ximeng, who had been resting in her room.
Gu Ximeng knew that Lin Changsheng would be visiting today. Originally, she had no intention of showing herself, worried that she might lose her temper.
But upon hearing the commotion outside, she couldn’t resist coming out.
Gu Ximeng wheeled herself out in a high-tech wheelchair—one that operated as smoothly as a small personal vehicle.
Actually, Mo Corporation had been researching bionic legs for the disabled, ones nearly indistinguishable from real limbs, but the price was astronomical. Moreover, Gu Ximeng never fully trusted mechanical devices.
When Gu Ximeng saw Lin Xiaoyou crying, her heart ached.
Lin Xiaoyou was her beloved wife, someone she cherished dearly, someone she felt guilty for burdening. She couldn’t stand to see her shed a single tear.
Assuming Lin Changsheng was bullying Lin Xiaoyou, Gu Ximeng burst out angrily, “Lin Changsheng! How dare you show your face here!”
Grabbing the nearest cup, she hurled it toward Lin Changsheng.
Startled by the outburst, Lin Changsheng narrowly dodged the flying cup, which shattered into pieces on the floor.
Only then did she get a clear look at the person in front of her—wasn’t this Sister Ximeng?
Lin Changsheng clearly remembered her: the big sister from next door who used to visit often and always brought her candy.
Later, when her own sister and Gu Ximeng became a couple, Lin Changsheng had even envied them for being able to be with the person they loved.
Even after Gu Ximeng’s legs failed her, her sister never left her side. It had been deeply touching back then. Lin Changsheng had even promised that one day she would heal Sister Ximeng’s legs.
Seeing the two living together now, she guessed they must have gotten married.
But why did Sister Ximeng look at her with such hostility now, as if she were some criminal?
Had the original Lin Changsheng done something else unforgivable?
Trying to smooth things over, Lin Changsheng quickly approached with a smile.
“Aren’t you Sister Ximeng?” she asked sweetly.
Gu Ximeng, still heartbroken over Lin Xiaoyou’s tears, found Lin Changsheng’s face irritating beyond belief.
Since the cup had missed, she was about to find a stick or something else to beat Lin Changsheng out the door.
But just then, she heard Lin Changsheng’s familiar form of address.
She froze on the spot.
“What did you just call me?” Gu Ximeng asked, stunned.
Lin Changsheng walked up to her, crouching down, making herself even shorter than Gu Ximeng seated in her wheelchair.
“Should I be calling you brother-in-law now?” she said with a playful smile.
It had been nearly two years since Gu Ximeng had last seen Lin Changsheng.
Her memory of Lin Changsheng was frozen at that wedding day—arrogant and cruel.
Lin Xiaoyou had often mentioned in private whether the Lin Changsheng of today was even her real sister.
Gu Ximeng had always dismissed it as nonsense, soothing her wife, saying, “People change, that’s all.”
But now, seeing the current Lin Changsheng up close, Gu Ximeng was no longer so sure.
She looked at Lin Xiaoyou. The two wives exchanged a silent, meaningful glance.
Gu Ximeng hesitantly asked, “Lin Changsheng?”
“It’s me!” Lin Changsheng replied naturally.
Lin Changsheng found the situation a bit strange.
Both her sister and Sister Ximeng looked and acted almost exactly like they had in her previous life.
Maybe there were slight differences in appearance—after all, this was ten years later—but in character and demeanor, they were practically the same.
So this original world… was that similar to her own?
No wonder the system had told her she was the most compatible candidate to replace the original Lin Changsheng.
She hadn’t expected that even her sister’s love story with Gu Ximeng, their marriage, and even Gu Ximeng’s disability would match exactly.
Seeing Gu Ximeng come out, Lin Xiaoyou hurriedly explained, “I’m crying because I’m happy. She didn’t bully me.”
As she spoke, she began picking up the broken glass from the floor, while scolding Gu Ximeng lightly, “Look at you, losing your temper again.”
Gu Ximeng, who adored her wife beyond reason, felt embarrassed.
Since her wife had said so, she had no choice but to relent.
“I…” she mumbled, at a loss for words.
Lin Changsheng jumped in to help her out, smiling,
“Brother-in-law just thought I was bullying you. Don’t blame her, Jie.”
After tidying up the mess, Lin Xiaoyou didn’t scold Gu Ximeng any further. Instead, she went into the kitchen to prepare Lin Changsheng’s favorite dishes.
Gu Ximeng knew very well that Lin Xiaoyou hated people losing their temper.
Her gentle nature disliked impatience or anger.
Gu Ximeng herself had once been quite easygoing, but after years of illness, her patience had worn thin, her occasional outbursts usually stemming from self-loathing rather than anger at others.
Lin Xiaoyou understood Gu Ximeng’s frustrations well.
Sometimes, even when Gu Ximeng failed to control her temper, Lin Xiaoyou wasn’t truly angry. Instead, she only became more patient and caring.
The two had spent years adjusting to each other and had developed a deep tacit understanding.
Fortunately, with Gu Ximeng’s new stable job, her self-esteem had slowly recovered, and her temper had improved significantly.
As Lin Xiaoyou went into the kitchen to prepare the meal, leaving Lin Changsheng and Gu Ximeng facing each other in awkward silence, Gu Ximeng didn’t really intend to make things difficult for Lin Changsheng anymore.
After all, the current Lin Changsheng seemed different.
The Lin Changsheng of the past had been a well-behaved child who used to trail behind her, constantly calling “Sister, Sister.”
It was only later, after everything that happened, that their relationship had deteriorated so badly.
“Go sit over there. Don’t hover around in front of me,” Gu Ximeng said bluntly.
Lin Changsheng obediently got up and sat on the sofa.
Actually, she had come with something important to discuss with Lin Xiaoyou.
But strangely enough, Lin Xiaoyou hadn’t asked her anything—she simply went straight to cooking, calm as if she already knew everything.
This left Lin Changsheng very surprised.
Gu Ximeng, sitting nearby in her wheelchair, occasionally glanced toward the kitchen. The atmosphere remained stiff and uncomfortable.
Trying to ease the tension, Lin Changsheng casually picked up an orange from the coffee table and started peeling it.
“Brother-in-law, do you really dislike me that much?” she asked with a half-joking tone.
Gu Ximeng frowned slightly, visibly displeased.
Though she was no longer as explosive as before, her attitude remained cold.
“You forgot everything you did?” Gu Ximeng said sharply.
It wasn’t so much the personal insults from Lin Changsheng that angered Gu Ximeng.
Rather, it was the thought of Lin Xiaoyou crying late at night over her sister that made her heart ache and fueled her resentment.
Lin Changsheng scratched her head and smiled sheepishly.
“Honestly, I really don’t remember. I had an accident recently and lost all memories from the past ten years.”
Gu Ximeng eyed her suspiciously.
Was this some new lie Lin Changsheng had cooked up?
But her tone sounded so genuine, so real, that it left Gu Ximeng confused.
Could it be true—had she really lost her memory?
“Lost your memory?” Gu Ximeng asked, doubtful but curious.
Lin Changsheng finished peeling the orange and gently placed it in Gu Ximeng’s hand.
“Yeah. So, if I ever did anything that upset you, I’m really sorry,” she said sincerely.
Gu Ximeng looked down at the orange in her hand, then back at Lin Changsheng.
Something was undeniably different about her.
The change in her gaze alone was enough to tell.
Gu Ximeng didn’t say whether she forgave her or not, but she still ate the orange Lin Changsheng had given her.
Just then, Lin Xiaoyou called them to dinner.
Lin Changsheng immediately stepped forward to push Gu Ximeng’s wheelchair toward the dining table.
Gu Ximeng, a bit embarrassed, protested,
“I can control the wheelchair myself.”
Lin Changsheng only smiled and said,
“I just wanted to help Brother-in-law.”
Thanks to advanced technology, Gu Ximeng’s wheelchair could even raise itself to table height.
Seeing the table filled with all her favorite dishes, Lin Changsheng finally felt the familiar warmth of home.
Yet one thing surprised her—there was a plate of green peppers sitting right in front of her.
And green peppers were her most hated food.
Lin Changsheng instinctively refused to touch them.
But then Lin Xiaoyou suddenly said,
“The green peppers turned out quite well today. Changsheng, aren’t you going to eat some?”
“Ah? Jie, I don’t really like green peppers…” Lin Changsheng said, cringing slightly at the thought.
She absolutely despised green peppers.
But then again, maybe the original Lin Changsheng had liked them?
Should she pretend to eat some just in case?
Before she could decide, Lin Xiaoyou suddenly seemed to realize something.
“Oh, right. I forgot. You never ate green peppers,” she said, smiling, and moved the plate in front of Gu Ximeng instead.
Gu Ximeng didn’t exactly dislike green peppers—but she didn’t particularly like them either.
They were rarely served at home.
Why had they been cooked today of all days?
Still, under her wife’s watchful gaze, she dared not refuse.
Meanwhile, Lin Changsheng sat there, utterly confused.
But she noticed something else—her sister’s gaze toward her was becoming softer and more tender.
