After Becoming a Scummy Alpha, I Met the Reborn Omega (GL) - Chapter 22
“No!”
Lin Changsheng woke from her nightmare, startled. The harsh lighting in the room stung her eyes, and for a brief moment, she was struck by a terrifying illusion — as if she were lying on an operating table, staring up at those blinding lights once again.
A figure suddenly appeared before her, causing a flash of fear. The person looked eerily like the one wearing the demon mask in her dream, dressed in surgical scrubs, holding a gleaming scalpel, and staring down at her coldly — as if she were merely a work of art.
Mo Zhaoyan’s face, however, was filled with worry. Lin Changsheng had been unconscious for several hours. Knowing her body’s special condition, Mo Zhaoyan was terrified something might happen to her and immediately had her transferred to the hospital.
Yet all of Lin Changsheng’s vital signs were normal. No physical cause for her coma could be found; it could only be attributed to emotional trauma. Mo Zhaoyan, losing his temper for the first time, threw the entire hospital into turmoil.
“If Lin Changsheng doesn’t wake up, none of you will be working here anymore,” he had roared.
Everyone in the hospital was now bustling around her, but they were completely at a loss. Although Lin Changsheng’s gland had once been injured, no abnormalities were detected. Human understanding of ABO differentiation had only developed over the past decade, and medical research was far from complete. If even the top researchers under the Mo Corporation couldn’t diagnose her, no other hospital could either.
Fortunately, Lin Changsheng finally woke up.
She looked around at the unfamiliar white walls, breathing in the disinfectant’s sterile scent unique to hospitals. The phantom of the demon mask faded away — it wasn’t a demon at all. It was Mo Zhaoyan, his face still full of worry. The terror gnawing at Lin Changsheng’s heart slowly subsided.
Gradually, the memories of her nightmare began to blur. The dark figure in her mind grew increasingly vague. She tried to recall the scene clearly, but her headache worsened until she had to clutch her pounding head.
“Are you okay?” Mo Zhaoyan asked gently.
Seeing how pale Lin Changsheng was, Mo Zhaoyan grew even more concerned. Noticing her dry, cracked lips, he quickly poured her a glass of warm water. Lin Changsheng instinctively took the cup and drank. The pain in her head eased slightly.
Mo Zhaoyan softly patted her back. “Drink slowly.”
After finishing the water, Lin Changsheng finally calmed down. She glanced around the room, prompting Mo Zhaoyan to explain hurriedly, “This is a hospital. You fainted at home.”
She had blacked out while watching that news broadcast, scaring Mo Zhaoyan half to death. This wasn’t the first time Lin Changsheng had collapsed. Since Mo Zhaoyan’s rebirth, Lin Changsheng’s health had been fragile — suffering from amnesia and frequent fainting spells.
Mo Zhaoyan couldn’t help but wonder if Lin Changsheng’s condition was somehow connected to his return to the past. Meanwhile, Lin Changsheng was also questioning herself. What exactly had the original body’s owner meant? What else was the system hiding from her?
Lin Changsheng looked at Mo Zhaoyan’s face, seeing the obvious concern. Her heart felt both warm and heavy. She knew that Mo Zhaoyan’s affection was directed toward the body she now inhabited — someone else’s life.
It felt wrong to accept such tenderness under false pretenses. Yet she couldn’t help but crave Mo Zhaoyan’s care — her gentle words, her scent, her gaze.
No matter which Lin Changsheng she was — in whichever world, no matter which version of herself — she would always, without hesitation, fall in love with Mo Zhaoyan.
“I’m fine,” Lin Changsheng whispered.
She didn’t dare meet Mo Zhaoyan’s eyes. Her evasive gaze was obvious, and Mo Zhaoyan noticed at once. Afraid of frightening her by being too obvious, Mo Zhaoyan softened her demeanor, though the affection hidden deep in her eyes remained.
An awkward atmosphere settled between them, lingering like the fear that still clung to Lin Changsheng from her nightmare.
“Are you uncomfortable anywhere? You suddenly fainted at home — if word got out, people might accuse me of abusing you,” Mo Zhaoyan joked, trying to lighten the mood.
“I feel much better now. It’s probably just a side effect of the medication,” Lin Changsheng replied, unable to reveal that it was a triggered memory from the original body. She had to come up with an excuse.
Mo Zhaoyan could tell she was hiding something but chose not to press further. It was clear that neither of them was ready for a serious conversation tonight. Still, seeing Lin Changsheng awake was enough of a relief.
“It’s getting late. I’ll head home for now,” Mo Zhaoyan said.
Lin Changsheng didn’t ask her to stay. She gazed out the window, lost in thought. Mo Zhaoyan walked to the door, placing her hand on the doorknob — then hesitated. She glanced back at Lin Changsheng.
Something felt… wrong.
Then, she chuckled quietly to herself, realizing what it was: Lin Changsheng hadn’t clung to her tonight.
Had she really gotten so used to Lin Changsheng being clingy after only a taste of sweetness? She had survived a long time without Lin Changsheng by her side. Yet now, she couldn’t imagine enduring that loneliness again.
No, Mo Zhaoyan shook her head, her heart firm with resolve.
No matter how many times it took, she would always return to the past — until she could protect Lin Changsheng.
After Mo Zhaoyan left, Lin Changsheng tried contacting the system.
“Are you there?”
“You’re hiding something from me, aren’t you?”
“Why does the original consciousness keep appearing?”
At first, the system didn’t intend to respond. Lin Changsheng waited for a long time before finally receiving a reply.
“Don’t worry. We’ve temporarily suppressed the original consciousness. She shouldn’t be able to emerge for a while. However, to maintain this suppression, we need you to complete tasks to provide energy.”
“What? I still have to do tasks? You haven’t even answered my question yet! Are you hiding something from me?”
“We have our reasons for what we can’t disclose. Besides, the original consciousness has darkened. She’s trying to devour you. You must not be influenced by her.”
Lin Changsheng hesitated. In the end, she chose to believe the system — for now. However, deep inside, she decided to stay cautious and not trust either side fully. She would investigate the truth herself.
“What task?” she asked.
“We’ll send mission information directly to your mind at key moments. You just need to complete the task. But if you fail, there will be a penalty.”
“What kind of penalty?”
“Just a small one,” the system replied lightly.
But despite how casually the system spoke, Lin Changsheng could clearly sense a heavy, ominous feeling behind those words. Yet she had no way to refuse. She had barely agreed when she heard the sound of a door opening — Mo Zhaoyan had returned.
“I forgot something,” Mo Zhaoyan said.
Only then did Lin Changsheng notice Mo Zhaoyan’s handbag on the nightstand. She instinctively picked it up, intending to hand it to her. But just as she moved, a translucent, game-like task panel suddenly appeared before her eyes, making her jump in shock.
【Task: Hold Mo Zhaoyan’s hand and say: “You’re so beautiful. Would you stay and sleep with me?” Time limit: 1 minute.】
What the hell?! Lin Changsheng’s pupils widened in disbelief. How could she ever say something that embarrassing? Yet the terrifying countdown had already started —
【59, 58, 57…】
The system’s warning echoed in her ears: small punishment… punishment…
Mo Zhaoyan took the handbag from Lin Changsheng’s hand, noticing the dazed look in her eyes. She was puzzled but didn’t say anything, turning to leave.
Just then, Lin Changsheng grabbed her hand.
Mo Zhaoyan turned back, looking at her with surprise. Lin Changsheng’s face was bright red — even the tips of her ears had flushed. She stammered, voice as soft as a mosquito:
“You… you’re so beautiful… would you stay and… sleep with me…?”
Mo Zhaoyan didn’t catch it at all. “Huh? What did you say? I didn’t hear you.”
Lin Changsheng, mortified beyond belief, lowered her head so much it looked like she was trying to bury herself. In all her life, she had never been this bold before. Mo Zhaoyan could barely see her face anymore.
Gathering all her courage, Lin Changsheng shouted in the fastest voice she could muster:
“You’re so beautiful! Would you stay and sleep with me!”
After blurting it out, she didn’t dare make another sound. Her breathing quickened, and her heart pounded furiously.
This time, Mo Zhaoyan heard her clearly.
Although she didn’t know why Lin Changsheng would suddenly say something like that, seeing her so shy sparked a mischievous impulse. Pretending to be confused, she teased, “What did you say? Can you look me in the eyes and say it again?”
Lin Changsheng felt like she had never been so embarrassed in her life — how could she possibly say it again?
Just when she was hesitating, Mo Zhaoyan moved. Her hand gently cupped Lin Changsheng’s chin and tipped it up, forcing Lin Changsheng to meet her gaze.
Lin Changsheng’s face turned even redder as she stared into Mo Zhaoyan’s smiling eyes. At that moment, Mo Zhaoyan seemed to be in a particularly good mood, her expression soft and alluring. Lin Changsheng was instantly captivated by her beauty.
“You’re so beautiful…” Lin Changsheng murmured involuntarily.
“Am I?” Mo Zhaoyan’s voice carried a tempting quality. “Do you like it?”
Her hand slid from Lin Changsheng’s cheek to her small, blushing ear. Mo Zhaoyan seemed quite taken with that little ear — it looked so delicate and tender that it made her want to bite it.
Gently, she pinched Lin Changsheng’s ear between her fingers, making Lin Changsheng blush even harder.
“I li—” Lin Changsheng almost blurted out “I like you,” but just in time, she caught sight of the task panel flashing Task Completed.
Realizing this, she snapped out of her daze, quickly let go of Mo Zhaoyan’s hand, and dove under the covers, swearing to herself to become a turtle hiding in its shell — pretending none of it had ever happened.
Under the blanket, Lin Changsheng heard Mo Zhaoyan chuckle softly. She felt like her entire body was being teased — especially her ear, which still tingled from Mo Zhaoyan’s touch.
Mo Zhaoyan couldn’t help but laugh at how adorably timid she was acting now, reminding her of the times she had teased Lin Changsheng before.
“Why are you hiding under the covers? Aren’t you afraid you’ll suffocate?” Mo Zhaoyan teased.
All Lin Changsheng wanted was to get rid of this mischievous goddess as quickly as possible.
“Why are you still here?!” she grumbled from under the blanket.
Instead of leaving, Mo Zhaoyan sat quietly at the edge of the bed. She tapped lightly on the blanket, making Lin Changsheng shiver nervously again.
“Didn’t you ask me to stay and sleep with you?” Mo Zhaoyan said, her voice full of amusement.
“I’m fine now. You should go home,” Lin Changsheng mumbled, her voice muffled through the blanket.
Mo Zhaoyan’s mood, however, only grew lighter and happier. Though she didn’t plan to tease Lin Changsheng further, she couldn’t resist one last playful jab.
“Then I’m leaving,” she said.
“Don’t see yourself out!” Lin Changsheng shot back immediately.
“Are you really sure you don’t want me to stay and sleep with you?” Mo Zhaoyan asked, in the tone one would use coaxing a little child.
“No need!” Lin Changsheng’s muffled voice answered quickly and firmly.
