- Chapter 25.1 - Live Broadcast of the Show
Recently, a teaser for a new variety show suddenly appeared in the entertainment industry. It was produced by an unknown director and focused on a dating theme. Originally, no one expected it to make any waves. However, what shocked everyone was that Gu Ruoyun agreed to appear as a regular guest.
Since getting married, Gu Ruoyun had almost faded out of the entertainment circle. The news of her sudden divorce, followed by her announcement of a full comeback, instantly caused a sensation. The former film queen’s first move upon returning was to join a dating show—what an earth-shattering revelation!
Everyone frantically tried to uncover who this unknown director was. Eventually, someone revealed that the director was Gu Ruoyun’s young niece, and suddenly everything made sense. No wonder they were able to invite Gu Ruoyun—it was all due to family connections.
What entertained netizens even more was a revelation from a user called “I’m Not a Paparazzo,” who exposed another layer of Gu Ximeng’s identity: she was actually the wife of Lin Xiaoyou. And who was Lin Xiaoyou? None other than the elder sister of Lin Changsheng! This string of family ties was fully unearthed, much to the delight of gossip-loving netizens.
Although people were having a blast consuming all this drama, not everyone took it seriously—after all, it was still unverified information posted by a random internet user. Regardless, the show hadn’t even aired yet and was already dominating the trending lists, never once falling off.
Meanwhile, Gu Ximeng was feeling overwhelmed. Despite the constant attention, most of it wasn’t positive. How could her project barely get off the ground, yet her personal information had already been thoroughly exposed? It made her wonder if someone was deliberately targeting her.
This opportunity, painstakingly secured from her aunt, could not be wasted. After injuring her leg, Gu Ximeng had struggled to stay relevant in the industry and missed out on many opportunities. Despite that, she had never abandoned her dream of becoming a director.
As for her connection with her aunt, it was more coincidence than true familiarity. Gu Ximeng had barely interacted with Gu Ruoyun before, only hearing about her occasionally from family members. In fact, Gu Ruoyun’s relationship with the Gu family wasn’t particularly close. If not for the massive uproar surrounding Gu Ruoyun’s divorce, Gu Ximeng might never have had the chance to reach out to her.
Fortunately, Gu Ruoyun wasn’t upset with her. Instead, she comforted Gu Ximeng, explaining that the online drama was caused by someone deliberately targeting herself, and had nothing to do with Gu Ximeng. This reassurance finally allowed Gu Ximeng to breathe easier.
Gu Ximeng didn’t dare pry into her aunt’s personal affairs. She was busy enough trying to organize the show. However, because of the online gossip, many celebrities became reluctant to join. After all, it was obvious the show was being used to pave the way for Gu Ruoyun’s comeback. Who would want to play a mere supporting role to highlight someone else’s brilliance?
The show hadn’t even officially started, and Gu Ximeng was already hitting roadblocks. Fortunately, Lin Xiaoyou remained steadfastly by her side, offering support. After following the online news trends, Gu Ximeng suddenly thought of a new idea: although celebrities were reluctant to participate, popular figures weren’t limited to the entertainment industry.
Right now, the person with the most buzz was Mo Zhaoyan, who had just wrapped up a major press conference. As the CEO of Mo Corporation—the largest conglomerate—Mo Zhaoyan, a beautiful and powerful executive, captivated public attention. Moreover, she was one of the rare S-class Omegas in the country, attracting legions of loyal fans.
Meanwhile, Lin Changsheng, who was exposed for allegedly cheating on Mo Zhaoyan, had been thoroughly vilified online. The heat surrounding them was comparable to that of top celebrities.
Timing was also perfect: Mo Corporation needed to shift public attention, and Mo Zhaoyan had long been eager to diversify into new business sectors. If Gu Ximeng offered her a chance, Mo Zhaoyan could use it to smoothly enter the entertainment industry—an absolute win-win.
Excited by the idea, Gu Ximeng immediately consulted her wife, Lin Xiaoyou. Lin Xiaoyou fully supported her plan. However, whether they could actually persuade Mo Zhaoyan and Lin Changsheng to appear on the show was another matter entirely.
Just imagining Mo Zhaoyan’s rigid, no-nonsense personality made Gu Ximeng anxious. It seemed almost impossible to convince someone like her—who spent her days working overtime, reading dry financial reports, and immersing herself completely in work—to waste time participating in a variety show.
After discussing it thoroughly, the two decided to first visit Lin Changsheng in the hospital to probe for any signs of Mo Zhaoyan’s intentions.
Originally, Lin Changsheng was almost ready for discharge. However, after Bai Qin’s unexpected appearance, the hospital immediately reported it to Mo Zhaoyan. In response, Mo Zhaoyan not only tightened security at the hospital but also postponed Lin Changsheng’s discharge.
Since Mo Zhaoyan was busy with the company’s press conference, she didn’t have time to personally watch over Lin Changsheng, so the safest choice was to keep her confined and protected for the time being.
Although the press conference ended successfully, delaying the drug’s release drew backlash from the board of directors. Coupled with the significant financial losses, internal conflicts began to emerge within the company. As the saying goes, “the tallest tree catches the most wind,” and online voices questioning Mo Zhaoyan’s leadership started to grow louder.
Even though Lin Changsheng was confined to the hospital, Lin Xiaoyou, being her only family member, was permitted to visit her. Mo Zhaoyan had explicitly authorized Lin Xiaoyou’s access.
As Lin Xiaoyou pushed Gu Ximeng’s wheelchair through the luxurious hospital corridors, she teased, “Mo Zhaoyan’s hospital is fancier than the ones outside. Do you think there might be a doctor here who can fix your leg?”
Over the years, Gu Ximeng had already come to terms with her condition. In the past, she had agonized over whether her disability would affect her relationship with Lin Xiaoyou. Now, she was at peace. Even when others brought up her injured leg, it no longer stirred any painful emotions within her.
Although Gu Ximeng had long since resigned herself to her condition, deep down, she still harbored a sliver of hope—that maybe, one day, her leg could be healed. Even if she could not run, at least she might stand like an ordinary person. However, she didn’t want Lin Xiaoyou to notice her secret longing. Smiling lightly, she said, “What could possibly be done? No one can figure out the cause of my strange condition. It is what it is.”
Though her words sounded casual, Lin Xiaoyou could still detect the faint trace of regret in her tone.
Before they could continue the conversation, they arrived at Lin Changsheng’s hospital room. They had no choice but to drop the topic.
Cooped up in the hospital for days, Lin Changsheng was going stir-crazy. She had pleaded with Mo Zhaoyan to let her leave, but this time, Mo Zhaoyan was adamant. Lin Changsheng could have anything she wanted—except her freedom.
To prevent Lin Changsheng from getting too bored, her hospital room had been turned into a miniature entertainment center. When Lin Xiaoyou entered, she was genuinely shocked—was this really a hospital room? It had everything imaginable for eating, drinking, and playing. Mo Zhaoyan might as well have built a mini amusement park for her.
Lin Xiaoyou, as the older sister, couldn’t help but feel a bit critical. How could they treat Lin Changsheng like a spoiled child? She thought she should have a serious talk with Mo Zhaoyan next time—like a concerned parent arguing with the overly indulgent other parent about raising a child.
“Xiaoyou! Ximeng! What brings you two here?” Lin Changsheng called out as she noticed them.
Compared to before, her attitude was noticeably better. Gu Ximeng found her much more pleasant now and smiled. “We came to visit you. Heard you were hospitalized.”
Lin Changsheng was sitting cross-legged on the floor. In the spacious room, a massive screen displayed the game she was currently playing. Awkwardly, she set down the controller and muttered, “I’m actually fine.”
Gu Ximeng nodded slightly. “We can tell.”
Feeling a little embarrassed, Lin Changsheng scratched her head. It really was bad timing—she had finally convinced Mo Zhaoyan to get her a game console to kill time, and just when she was deeply engrossed, Lin Xiaoyou arrived.
She didn’t want Lin Xiaoyou to think she was frivolous, so she quickly shifted the blame onto Mo Zhaoyan—after all, Mo wasn’t here right now.
“It’s all Mo Zhaoyan’s fault! She insisted on locking me up here. I’m perfectly fine, but stuck with nothing to do.” She subtly turned off the display as she spoke.
Lin Xiaoyou, however, didn’t expose her childishness. In fact, she found this version of Lin Changsheng even more endearing—more genuine and familiar. It was a refreshing change from the cold, mechanical researcher buried in her laboratory work.
Gu Ximeng then explained the reason for their visit. Lin Changsheng, naturally willing to help her sister and brother-in-law, hesitated only at the thought of whether Mo Zhaoyan would agree.
“Mo Zhaoyan is really busy right now. I’m not sure she’ll say yes. But she usually visits me every evening. I can ask her when she comes tonight,” Lin Changsheng offered.
If possible, Lin Changsheng herself wouldn’t mind appearing on the show with Mo Zhaoyan. After reading the program details, she realized it was just a standard dating variety show, allowing her to form an on-screen couple with Mo Zhaoyan. Even though she didn’t fully believe everything Bai Qin had said, she still wanted to spend more time with Mo Zhaoyan—partly to satisfy her instinctive yearning to be close to her, and partly to better understand how Mo Zhaoyan felt about her.
Besides, being cooped up here was not a long-term solution. Why not use this opportunity to gauge Mo Zhaoyan’s thoughts? Although, realistically, Lin Changsheng doubted Mo Zhaoyan would agree.
Still, wanting to help her sister and brother-in-law, Lin Changsheng added sincerely, “If Mo Zhaoyan doesn’t agree, that’s fine too. I’m pretty popular myself. I can join your show!”
Though Lin Changsheng’s offer was genuine, Gu Ximeng could only force a polite smile in response. Right now, Lin Changsheng’s online reputation was mostly negative, and this was a dating show. Letting her form a “CP” (couple pairing) with someone else would surely attract a flood of criticism. Worse, wouldn’t Mo Zhaoyan be furious seeing Lin Changsheng paired with another person?
Gu Ximeng chose not to speak too bluntly, but Lin Xiaoyou, naturally perceptive, caught on.
“Changsheng, just ask Mo Zhaoyan first,” Lin Xiaoyou said gently. “Let us know afterward.”
After settling the show matter, Lin Xiaoyou casually brought up another concern. “Is Mo Zhaoyan planning to keep you locked up here forever?”
Officially, it was said that Lin Changsheng was receiving treatment. But seeing how lively she was, Lin Xiaoyou couldn’t help but suspect that Mo Zhaoyan was deliberately confining her.
Lin Changsheng didn’t want her sister to resent Mo Zhaoyan, so she quickly defended her, “No, it’s just that I’ve been tired lately. She wants me to get some rest.”
