Lin Xiaoyou easily saw through the lie. “Resting… in a hospital?”
Lin Changsheng was momentarily speechless. “Mo Zhaoyan is just worried about me,” she mumbled.
In truth, Lin Xiaoyou already knew the real reason. Mo Zhaoyan had explained everything: she feared Lin Changsheng would overthink matters, and the criminal behind the earlier incidents was still at large. Mo Zhaoyan’s precautions were entirely justified.
“Changsheng,” Lin Xiaoyou said seriously, “some things happen not because of you, but because of those people’s own choices. You can’t shoulder all the blame. Even without you, they would still do what they did. You mustn’t feel too guilty, understand?”
Lin Xiaoyou’s words were meant to comfort her, especially regarding Xu Jing’s betrayal. However, Lin Changsheng’s mind went elsewhere—to the scene of her parents’ fatal car accident. Doubts crept in: what if the original “truth” had been a lie?
Tentatively, Lin Changsheng asked, “Are you talking about our parents?”
Lin Xiaoyou’s heart skipped a beat. She studied Lin Changsheng’s expression, trying to discern if she had recovered her memories. Although Lin Changsheng tried to act nonchalant, she nervously gripped the hem of her clothes—a childhood habit Lin Xiaoyou knew all too well.
Suppressing her own anxiety, Lin Xiaoyou remained calm and responded, “What about our parents? Changsheng, their accident was just that—an accident.”
She spoke solemnly, leaning naturally closer to Lin Changsheng and sitting beside her as if offering comfort.
Lin Changsheng frowned slightly. Was it really just an accident?
“Don’t overthink it,” Lin Xiaoyou said softly, gently patting Lin Changsheng’s back like soothing a child.
Lin Changsheng was left puzzled, but the sensitive topic was thus carefully buried again.
Later that evening, as usual, Mo Zhaoyan came to visit. During their conversation, Lin Changsheng casually mentioned Lin Xiaoyou and Gu Ximeng’s visit, and then brought up the idea of the variety show.
However, Mo Zhaoyan had no recollection of any such show. She had never cared about entertainment gossip, and in her memory from the previous life, the new drug had been launched on schedule. At that time, she and Lin Changsheng hadn’t reconciled, and Gu Ximeng’s variety show certainly hadn’t invited them to participate—they had already divorced by then.
Seeing Mo Zhaoyan frowning as if troubled, Lin Changsheng thought she was reluctant about joining the show. She quickly said, “If you really don’t want to go, it’s fine. I’ll tell my sister.”
But Mo Zhaoyan wasn’t bothered by the idea of the show itself; she was more concerned about the potential loss of control over the situation. Instead of answering Lin Changsheng’s question directly, she posed one of her own.
“Do you want to join the show?” she asked.
Of course Lin Changsheng wanted to. Without any hesitation, she eagerly nodded her head.
Seeing her so enthusiastic, Mo Zhaoyan couldn’t help but feel a wave of affection. Indulgently, she agreed.
Hearing her answer, Lin Changsheng was so excited she almost jumped up, but she quickly grew worried that Mo Zhaoyan was only agreeing out of obligation. She hesitated and said, “Are you sure you don’t want to think about it again? It’s a variety show—lots of people will be watching. They’ll see the ‘real’ you, not just the CEO of Mo Corporation. Plus… you’ll be paired with me as a CP.”
“Is this a dating show you mentioned?” Mo Zhaoyan asked, still somewhat puzzled. “This ‘CP’ thing—does that mean we’re teamed up? Like, doing tasks together?”
“Yes, exactly!” Lin Changsheng hurried to explain. “We’ll be working together to complete tasks the director assigns.”
“Sounds good,” Mo Zhaoyan said calmly. “Besides, since Mo Corporation is under heavy public scrutiny, participating in a popular show could help divert attention.”
After agreeing, Lin Changsheng immediately relayed the good news to Gu Ximeng. That very night, Gu Ximeng worked overtime to start promoting it online—and sure enough, the internet exploded.
“What? Mo Zhaoyan is going on a variety show?!”
“My wife is joining the entertainment industry?!”
“Excuse me—my wife, thank you very much.”
“Can someone tell me who Mo Zhaoyan even is?”
Clips of Mo Zhaoyan flooded the internet. Most were from past public events, where she always appeared cool, aloof, and elegant. Her stunning looks and commanding presence instantly captivated countless new fans. Coupled with her billionaire status, she became the ultimate fantasy, sparking a flood of playful online pleas begging for “sponsorship.”
But soon, people also dug up old gossip: Lin Changsheng, dubbed the “lucky commoner” who married the wealthy beauty. Along with that came endless stories of Lin Changsheng’s alleged infidelity and their rumored divorce.
Some even pieced together cold, distant clips of Mo Zhaoyan and Lin Changsheng from public appearances, fueling speculation.
“They’re definitely divorced!”
“How could anyone cheat on someone like President Mo?!”
“Lin Changsheng isn’t even worthy of standing next to President Mo!”
“What do you mean unworthy? Without Chief Lin’s scientific breakthroughs, you wouldn’t even know how to control your instincts!”
“Ha! Lin Changsheng’s little fans have nothing to brag about except outdated achievements!”
Naturally, Lin Changsheng had her defenders as well—but the two sides existed in entirely different online circles. It didn’t take long before fan wars erupted, with both sides determined to argue until dawn.
Meanwhile, the two women at the center of this storm were peacefully cuddling together, fast asleep, blissfully unaware of the online chaos.
With Gu Ximeng’s official announcement, the news that Lin Changsheng and Mo Zhaoyan would appear together—and as an official CP—was set in stone. However, this only intensified the backlash from their individual fan bases.
“What?! Why should Lin Changsheng be paired with our President Mo?!”
“If it weren’t for Chief Lin, Mo Corporation wouldn’t even be where it is today!”
The solo fans clashed fiercely, leaving the small, pitiful CP fans to quietly celebrate in their own corners—lighting fireworks in their hearts, cheering silently:
Finally! Our ship is real! They didn’t divorce after all! They’re going on a show together to show off their love!
The earliest CP fans had emerged three years ago, when Lin Changsheng invented the first inhibition patches and, despite offers from other companies, resolutely chose to join Mo Corporation. Soon afterward, news of their marriage broke.
Since then, CP fans had survived on scraps of sugar hidden in piles of heartbreak, growing resilient and self-sufficient. Those who were still around today were true veterans.
With the internet buzzing nonstop, Hua Miaomiao naturally caught wind of everything.
Her collaboration with Mo Zhaoyan had already fallen through, and now Mo Zhaoyan was about to step into the entertainment world. As Mo Zhaoyan’s assistant, Tang Ying needed to stay by her side constantly, which meant Hua Miaomiao couldn’t even see her.
At first, Tang Ying would still respond to a few of Hua Miaomiao’s messages. But eventually, annoyed by the persistence, she simply stopped replying altogether.
Being ignored like this was something Hua Miaomiao had never experienced before. Furious, she immediately contacted Bai Qin, demanding a meeting.
At that moment, Bai Qin was busy fighting online wars, countering every negative comment about Gu Ruoyun. She might criticize Gu Ruoyun herself, but she absolutely wouldn’t allow others to slander her idol.
Still, one call from Hua Miaomiao was enough to summon her. Bai Qin had no choice—especially since Hua Miaomiao somehow knew about her past connection to Gu Ruoyun, holding it over her like a threat. Bai Qin bitterly regretted ever revealing her secrets.
She used to be the one holding leverage over others. Who would have thought she’d end up being cornered, first by Hua Miaomiao, then by Lin Changsheng?
When Bai Qin arrived, she didn’t bother hiding her irritation. “What now, Your Highness? Dragging me out in the middle of the night to disrupt my private life?”
Hua Miaomiao gave her an appraising look, clearly noticing her impatience.
“I want to join the show,” Hua Miaomiao said flatly.
Bai Qin froze for a moment, then quickly realized which show she meant—the one currently riding on the explosive popularity of Mo Zhaoyan and Lin Changsheng.
Gu Ximeng really knew how to stir up a buzz.
“You want to join? Then just go! Why tell me about it? It’s not like Gu Ximeng would dare refuse you.”
“I want you to go with me,” Hua Miaomiao said.
“What?” Bai Qin exclaimed. “Why me? I’m not going!”
Bai Qin had no desire to show her face on screen. It wasn’t that she didn’t want fame—she had once infiltrated variety shows while investigating celebrities. But this show was different; Gu Ruoyun would be participating.
If she went, she would inevitably run into her.
And Bai Qin, no matter what, did not want to face Gu Ruoyun again.
She was afraid she would weaken, once again falling into the illusion of Gu Ruoyun’s tenderness, only to end up hurt all over again. Besides, she had no romantic ties with Hua Miaomiao; what business did she have joining a dating show?
But Hua Miaomiao had no intention of letting her off so easily.
“Then I’ll just tell Gu Ruoyun you’re still thinking about her,” she said with a smirk.
Bai Qin panicked immediately and rushed to stop her from dialing. “No, no, no—my dear Miss Hua, whatever you want me to do, I’ll do it. It’s just a variety show, right? I’ll go!”
Hua Miaomiao chuckled, amused by her flustered reaction, as if toying with her.
“Are you sure you’re not forcing yourself?” she teased.
“Not at all! It’s an honor to be paired with the CEO of Huayang Group!” Bai Qin said dramatically, laying it on thick with flattery.
Yet even as she continued to praise Hua Miaomiao, Bai Qin found herself running out of words, silently pleading for someone—anyone—to save her. Hua Miaomiao simply smiled, saying nothing, letting Bai Qin grow increasingly uneasy.
Gu Ruoyun remained Bai Qin’s only weakness, and unfortunately, Hua Miaomiao had seized it perfectly.
That first love, back in their youth, had begun merely as a transaction. Bai Qin had sold herself for a hundred thousand yuan.
