- Chapter 28 - Walking Corpses
The show had not yet started filming.
Everyone was still waiting for Hua Miaomiao to finish her makeup.
Mo Zhaoyan was also backstage, quietly blending in among the production crew.
When someone from the crew spotted her and was about to greet her, Mo Zhaoyan quickly gestured for silence with a finger to her lips.
Mo Zhaoyan’s eyes fell on Tang Ying and Hua Miaomiao’s subtle interactions.
Hua Miaomiao was too busy flirting with Tang Ying to notice that Mo Zhaoyan was watching them intently.
Deep in thought, Mo Zhaoyan recalled how, last time, Tang Ying’s pheromone scent had seemed strikingly similar to Hua Miaomiao’s.
Today, both of them were covered heavily with the smell of inhibitors, but as an exceptionally sensitive S-class Omega, Mo Zhaoyan could still faintly detect the underlying scent of their pheromones.
Her suspicions seemed to be confirmed: something was definitely going on between these two.
Mo Zhaoyan was certain Tang Ying would never betray her, so she came to another conclusion — Tang Ying must be Hua Miaomiao’s secret lover.
Thinking of Hua Miaomiao’s notorious romantic history, Mo Zhaoyan couldn’t help but worry about Tang Ying’s future.
She silently hoped that Tang Ying wouldn’t fall too deeply.
Meanwhile, some members of the production crew also noticed Mo Zhaoyan’s gaze lingering on Hua Miaomiao.
Among them were a few fans of the “HuaYan” pairing, who immediately thought the rumors online might actually be true:
President Mo and President Hua really had something going on.
And now, President Mo was even secretly watching Hua Miaomiao!
Unnoticed by the others, Lin Changsheng slipped silently into the scene.
She saw Mo Zhaoyan peeking at Hua Miaomiao and immediately felt a stab of jealousy.
Hearing the murmurs of conversation around her, a dark, uneasy emotion welled up inside her.
She didn’t know where the courage came from, but somehow she felt — strongly, instinctively — that Mo Zhaoyan belonged to her.
And she absolutely could not let anyone else take her away.
It was a fierce, overwhelming possessiveness.
Lin Changsheng knew it was wrong — but she couldn’t control it.
“President Mo and President Hua really make a great couple,” someone nearby whispered.
The words were like a fuse, detonating something deep within Lin Changsheng’s heart.
That devilish voice reemerged, whispering insidiously:
“She’s yours… she’s yours…”
Lin Changsheng immediately realized — it was the consciousness of her original self returning.
It hadn’t been that long since she’d last been free of it.
She should never have trusted the system’s words.
Still, she had to admit that completing tasks did seem to make it harder for her original consciousness to influence her.
“You should calm down for a while,” Lin Changsheng muttered inwardly.
The dark Lin Changsheng was trapped by some unknown force.
At this point, she had only a tiny sliver of energy left to connect to Lin Changsheng’s mind.
The stronger and more violent the dark emotions became, the more they were blocked by an invisible barrier.
For the first time, Lin Changsheng took the initiative to communicate with her dark counterpart.
She could sense her existence, sealed deep within her own consciousness.
Even though the other was locked away, Lin Changsheng could still feel her presence.
So she tried to make peace with her — after all, it was she herself who had taken over the other’s body.
Even if it had been an act of desperation, she still felt a twinge of guilt.
Lin Changsheng wasn’t sure what to call her.
But her attempt to communicate left the dark Lin Changsheng bewildered.
It was unprecedented.
Ever since her creation, the dark Lin Changsheng’s sole purpose had been to erode Lin Changsheng’s mind, to drive her into collapse and take her place — doing all the things Lin Changsheng had once wanted but never dared to do.
Their relationship had always been one of mutual destruction.
There could be no coexistence.
The dark Lin Changsheng firmly believed she had been born to save the weak and helpless Lin Changsheng.
Though Lin Changsheng had resisted for a long time, she had ultimately been devoured.
But now, the current Lin Changsheng wanted to talk — wanted to coexist?
Impossible.
Light and darkness could never coexist.
Thus, the dark Lin Changsheng chose to ignore her.
She found the situation incredibly dull.
Because of the strange barrier, she couldn’t act for now.
Her plan to consume Lin Changsheng would have to be postponed.
Still, she was confident: once Lin Changsheng recovered her lost memories, she would collapse again — and that would be her opportunity.
All she needed was patience.
Receiving no reply, Lin Changsheng silently walked up to Mo Zhaoyan’s side, breaking her line of observation.
Mo Zhaoyan turned her head, noticing her, a trace of puzzlement in her eyes.
Lin Changsheng said nothing — she merely stood close by, her mood visibly low.
“What’s wrong?” Mo Zhaoyan asked, lowering her voice.
She leaned in close, her breath brushing against Lin Changsheng’s ear, making it tingle.
“Nothing,” Lin Changsheng replied softly.
From the crew’s perspective, it simply looked like Lin Changsheng and Mo Zhaoyan were standing very close together, whispering intimately.
People couldn’t help but wonder: wasn’t the internet saying they were getting divorced? How come they seemed so close now?
Gu Ximeng noticed that her team members were too busy gossiping rather than working.
Seeing that Hua Miaomiao had almost finished her makeup, she called out for everyone to get ready for filming, successfully shutting down the chatter and urging them to focus on their tasks.
Lin Changsheng and Mo Zhaoyan returned to the recording site, standing a little apart from the others.
The five participants lined up side by side.
Just as Gu Ximeng was about to start shooting, Bai Qin — who had been silent until now — suddenly spoke up.
“Let’s apply some sunscreen,” Bai Qin said. “The sun’s too strong.”
Gu Ximeng glanced up at the sky.
In truth, today’s weather wasn’t too bad — although it was muggy, the sunlight wasn’t particularly harsh.
It actually looked like it might rain soon, which was why she was eager to start filming; once it rained, shooting would become very difficult.
“Alright, go ahead,” Gu Ximeng agreed.
Mo Zhaoyan and Lin Changsheng had already applied sunscreen beforehand.
Only Bai Qin and Gu Ruoyun were unprotected.
Gu Ruoyun had forgotten to bring sunscreen.
Her skin was special — she couldn’t use ordinary sunscreen — and she had a severe allergy to sunlight, breaking out in rashes almost immediately.
She needed a specially formulated medicated sunscreen.
She had realized earlier that she had forgotten to bring it, but since the sun wasn’t too strong, she hoped she could tough it out until filming was over.
She prayed her skin wouldn’t react too quickly.
She berated herself for being so careless, although her assistant had already been sent to buy the cream — not that she was sure it would even be available on this remote island.
Unexpectedly, Bai Qin quietly handed her a bottle of sunscreen.
It was the exact brand Gu Ruoyun regularly used.
“You can use this,” Bai Qin said.
Gu Ruoyun was taken aback.
Since their encounter today, Bai Qin hadn’t said a single word to her, nor spared her a glance.
Yet now she not only noticed Gu Ruoyun hadn’t applied sunscreen but even remembered her special condition and had prepared for it.
A warm feeling bloomed in Gu Ruoyun’s chest.
She gently accepted the bottle, saying softly, “Thank you.”
Bai Qin quickly turned her head away, clearly flustered, and stiffly said,
“Don’t get the wrong idea. It’s not like I brought it especially for you. This brand is just… really effective.”
This particular sunscreen was specifically designed for sensitive skin and included medicinal ingredients — something ordinary people wouldn’t typically buy.
Bai Qin’s clumsy attempt to cover up her intentions only made her seem more endearing.
“I know. Thank you,” Gu Ruoyun replied, choosing not to expose her.
She had always known how thoughtful Bai Qin could be — known her awkward pride and hidden tenderness.
She knew every inch of Bai Qin’s skin, every sensitive spot.
After all, she had once personally taught Bai Qin how to explore, how to slowly invade and conquer.
Bai Qin had been an eager learner, grasping everything immediately.
Back then, before either of them had undergone differentiation, it was Gu Ruoyun who had taken Bai Qin’s first time — then, slowly, she taught her how to take the initiative.
Later, after they differentiated, it was Bai Qin who mostly dominated — the natural advantage of being an Alpha.
They knew each other intimately — every habit, every gesture.
Even the location of a tiny mole on Bai Qin’s body was etched into Gu Ruoyun’s memory.
Gu Ruoyun had always wanted to explain what had happened back then.
She knew she was at fault.
She had wanted to keep everything hidden until she could resolve the situation — but she had failed.
At that time, her family’s company was on the verge of bankruptcy.
To save it, they had arranged a marriage alliance with another powerful group.
Her parents had never liked her being in the entertainment industry. And this time, they had simply sold her off to the highest bidder.
Her parents had even used Bai Qin to threaten her, forcing her into submission.
At that time, Bai Qin was about to graduate from university, standing at the cusp of her brightest years.
Gu Ruoyun felt that she could give up her own career, but she could never risk Bai Qin’s future.
Thus, she chose to compromise.
She sought out the intended fiancé.
Fortunately, he wasn’t interested in an arranged marriage either.
The two reached a secret agreement to enter a sham marriage, tricking their families into trusting them, with plans to divorce once the situation stabilized.
Gu Ruoyun hid the entire matter from Bai Qin.
She didn’t dare tell her, terrified that once Bai Qin found out, she would leave.
Given Bai Qin’s character, she would never tolerate it — even a fake marriage would be unacceptable to her.
In Bai Qin’s moral compass, such an arrangement would make her feel like the “other woman,” something she would never accept.
She would leave without hesitation.
Gu Ruoyun couldn’t bear that outcome. Thus, she chose to conceal everything.
But no secret stays buried forever.
Even though Gu Ruoyun and the man agreed to keep their marriage private — no ceremony, no announcement — the news still leaked out and Bai Qin found out.
When Gu Ruoyun heard the news, she rushed to find Bai Qin, desperate to explain.
But all that was left for her was Bai Qin’s sudden disappearance — and the shattered crystal ball she had once given Gu Ruoyun as a token of affection.
From that day on, Gu Ruoyun lost all contact with Bai Qin.
It felt as if her soul had left her body along with her.
Later, she learned of Bai Qin’s whereabouts: she had gone abroad to study.
Meanwhile, following the plan, Gu Ruoyun married the man, formally withdrawing from the entertainment industry.
She moved overseas with her husband’s family, fading quietly from the public eye.
But Gu Ruoyun had never stopped searching for Bai Qin.
Yet Bai Qin, having no close family ties, vanished like a drop of water into the sea once she went abroad.
Finding her was nearly impossible.
Later, her so-called husband began to renege on their original agreement.
He wanted to have a real relationship, to start a family.
But Gu Ruoyun’s heart had always belonged solely to Bai Qin. She flatly refused him.
Their marriage descended into a prolonged cold war.
Only recently had Gu Ruoyun finally found traces of Bai Qin again.
Bai Qin had returned to China, now working as a well-known entertainment journalist — a paparazzo.
Upon hearing this, Gu Ruoyun made a decisive choice.
She returned to China, re-entered the entertainment industry, severed all ties with her husband’s family, and filed for divorce.
All these years, she had lived like a walking corpse, obeying her family’s wishes, simply because she had no news of Bai Qin.
Without Bai Qin, her life had no meaning.
Bai Qin’s reappearance reignited the hope within her — gave her the courage to escape from the cage that had trapped her for so long.
This time, she would never lose Bai Qin again.
Even if Bai Qin could never forgive her, even if she could only watch silently from afar — That would be enough.
