- Chapter 9 - The Mad Scientist
She was afraid of me.
Lin Changsheng stared coldly at Zhou Yiyi, watching her trembling body, and a deep, unprecedented fear gripped her heart.
Why? Why would she be afraid of me?
Had the Lin Changsheng ten years from now become truly monstrous?
Cheating, human experimentation, threatening others—what would be next?
If the rumors about the batch of inhibitors were true—if Mo Zhaoyan was right—then once the inhibitors hit the market, people’s lives would become dependent on them.
And Mo Corporation was the biggest name in the country.
If something went wrong after the launch, the consequences would be unimaginable.
The more Lin Changsheng thought about it, the more terrified she became.
This was not the future she wanted.
The person reflected in others’ eyes was nothing like the Lin Changsheng she knew herself to be.
It felt like she had stepped into a foreign world, with no familiar faces around her.
A wave of helplessness and fear engulfed her.
Seeing Lin Changsheng stay silent, Zhou Yiyi thought she was displeased.
In a voice barely above a whisper, she called again,
“Chief?”
“You don’t have to worry,” Lin Changsheng said, forcing herself to steady her voice.
“I’ll find a way to treat your sister.
You don’t need to concern yourself with the inhibitors.
And you don’t have to be afraid of me—I won’t threaten you using your sister.”
Zhou Yiyi couldn’t believe it.
Was the cold, ruthless Chief actually being so reasonable today?
She convinced herself it must either be a whim or a test.
“Rest assured, Chief.
I would never betray you.”
Seeing that Zhou Yiyi didn’t seem truly reassured, Lin Changsheng understood—some things couldn’t be changed overnight.
She could only let her go for now.
After leaving Lin Changsheng’s office, Zhou Yiyi immediately went to find her sister, Wen Lier.
The recent string of events was weighing down heavily on her:
Lin Changsheng’s strange behavior, Mo Zhaoran’s sudden pursuit of Wen Lier—it all felt like everything was sliding into an uncontrollable spiral.
“Big Sis, why are you here again?”
Zhou Yiyi couldn’t help herself.
Wen Lier’s life now depended entirely on Lin Changsheng’s drug.
Recalling Lin Changsheng’s strange attitude today made Zhou Yiyi’s fear only deepen.
What exactly did Lin Changsheng want?
Why did she suddenly seek Wen Lier out?
The more abnormal things seemed, the more fearful Zhou Yiyi became.
“Stay away from the Chief, understand?”
Wen Lier didn’t understand.
Why was her sister always so fearful whenever she mentioned Lin Changsheng?
From what she had seen today, the Chief was perfectly kind and approachable.
Though Lin Changsheng always wore a cold face when seen from afar at the company, up close today, she had been warm and gentle.
“But Sis, the Chief was really kind to me today,” Wen Lier said, puzzled.
Seeing her sister’s naïve expression, Zhou Yiyi had no choice but to harden her tone and issue a stern warning,
“The Chief… Lin Changsheng… she could never be truly kind.
Listen to me—stay away from her.”
The fear in Zhou Yiyi’s eyes was not faked.
Yet, this only made Wen Lier even more curious.
Still, being the obedient girl she was, she nodded without protest.
Seeing her agree, Zhou Yiyi finally softened her tone.
She gently hugged Wen Lier, saying,
“It’s alright.
I won’t let anything happen to you.
In this company, we can’t afford to provoke anyone.
All we can do is stay quiet and follow orders.”
Her body trembled slightly as she spoke, but Wen Lier could only suppress her doubts for now.
One year ago.
At that time, Zhou Yiyi had already been working at Mo Corporation for several years.
She had just been promoted to Lin Changsheng’s assistant, which allowed her access to Lin Changsheng’s private office.
Meanwhile, Wen Lier was already 20 years old but had still not completed differentiation.
Even after falling in love, she had shown no signs of completing the process.
This was extremely abnormal.
Ordinary hospitals had long given up on her case.
Just a few days ago, Wen Lier suddenly collapsed.
After rushing her to the hospital, they found her body was undergoing a mysterious pathological change.
Despite Zhou Yiyi’s daily prayers and relentless research into partial differentiation cases, she couldn’t prevent her sister’s condition from worsening.
The unknown disease left Wen Lier’s body growing weaker by the day.
If things continued, it would not be long before she died.
In the whole country, there were only a handful of researchers working on partial differentiation.
By pure coincidence, one day in Lin Changsheng’s office, Zhou Yiyi stumbled across research notes on partial differentiation.
That’s when she learned that Lin Changsheng had developed a new experimental drug.
However, this drug had not yet been approved for use.
Human testing was forbidden, and Lin Changsheng had halted the project.
Lin Changsheng had been one of the earliest researchers into the ABO genome.
Her data was far more extensive than anyone else’s.
To Zhou Yiyi, she was a beacon of hope.
Yet every time Zhou Yiyi tried to bring up her sister’s situation, Lin Changsheng coldly brushed her off, refusing to discuss anything unrelated to work.
As Wen Lier’s condition worsened again, Zhou Yiyi, desperate beyond reason, decided to take a gamble.
That day, she entered Lin Changsheng’s office as usual.
But this time, after slipping inside, she quietly locked the door behind her.
Lin Changsheng, absorbed in her tablet, didn’t even notice.
In the spacious office, Zhou Yiyi’s anxious breathing sounded especially loud.
Still, Lin Changsheng remained unaware.
The only sound in the room came from the soft hum of the tablet.
Recently, photos surfaced of Mo Corporation’s President, Mo Zhaoyan, dining with Huayang Group’s President, Hua Shao.
The media, not daring to accuse them directly of an affair, only hinted at their close relationship, careful with their wording to avoid offending the two powerful executives.
Nevertheless, the phrasing was enough to stir the public’s imagination.
Zhou Yiyi slowly approached Lin Changsheng, swallowing nervously.
Lin Changsheng silently set down her tablet, her cold gaze fixed on Zhou Yiyi, her mood sinking to rock bottom.
“You don’t knock when you enter my office?” she asked, her voice icy.
Zhou Yiyi had already reached Lin Changsheng’s desk.
They were separated only by a tabletop.
“Chief! I really have no other choice.
My sister is dying!”
Zhou Yiyi reached into her shoulder bag, but Lin Changsheng impatiently cut her off.
“I told you before—don’t talk to me about anything unrelated to work.”
Lin Changsheng’s demeanor remained as cold and unfeeling as ever.
Desperate, Zhou Yiyi saw no other option but to go all in.
She shut her eyes, gritted her teeth, and suddenly pulled out a dagger from her bag, pointing it straight at Lin Changsheng.
For the first time, Lin Changsheng’s expression shifted.
Zhou Yiyi thought she had finally managed to frighten her.
But instead, Lin Changsheng simply gave her a faint, amused smile—like she was watching a clown’s performance.
There wasn’t a trace of fear on her face.
Zhou Yiyi trembled uncontrollably.
This was the first time in her life she had done something so reckless.
Her hand shook violently, and to stabilize the blade, she had to grip it with both hands.
“My sister is a partially differentiated person!
She’s twenty years old now and her body is breaking down.
No hospital out there can help her anymore!
I know you’re researching partial differentiation!
And you’ve already developed a drug!
Please, I beg you to save her!”
Her voice trembled with desperation.
It was pitiful to hear.
But Lin Changsheng, at that moment, felt no sympathy whatsoever.
What truly intrigued her was something else:
Would Zhou Yiyi actually dare to strike?
Lin Changsheng suddenly stood up and slowly walked toward Zhou Yiyi.
Seeing her move closer, Zhou Yiyi instinctively stepped back, her knife shaking.
“If I say no,” Lin Changsheng said softly, her voice a low, enticing murmur,
“what will you do?
Will you kill me?”
Her tone was both a temptation and a provocation, laced with a strange, chilling allure, as if she was dragging Zhou Yiyi toward hell.
There was a madness gleaming in Lin Changsheng’s eyes.
When Zhou Yiyi looked into them, all she saw was fear—
Not fear from Lin Changsheng, but a terrifying, obsessive thirst—
the look of someone viewing her as an experiment, a lab rat, a subject for research.
As the dagger drew closer and closer to Lin Changsheng’s throat, Zhou Yiyi, realizing she had no way out, instinctively tried to lower the blade.
She had never intended to truly hurt Lin Changsheng—only to threaten her.
But Lin Changsheng noticed the hesitation.
In a flash, she grabbed Zhou Yiyi’s wrist.
As an Alpha, Lin Changsheng’s physical strength easily overpowered Zhou Yiyi, an Omega.
There was no room for resistance.
Bit by bit, Lin Changsheng pulled Zhou Yiyi’s hand—and the dagger—closer and closer to her own throat.
Lin Changsheng’s crazed eyes stared intently at Zhou Yiyi.
“If you want to kill someone, you need to cut right here,” she said coldly, her voice light but with an unnerving upward lilt—clearly, she was delighted at this moment.
Zhou Yiyi watched in horror as the dagger in her hand came dangerously close to Lin Changsheng’s throat.
Terrified, she immediately let go.
The dagger clattered to the floor.
Lin Changsheng glanced down at the weapon and then casually released Zhou Yiyi’s arm.
Zhou Yiyi collapsed onto the floor, her body limp and trembling, tears streaming down her face as she cried out in despair, like a helpless child.
“Please… I’m begging you… Please…”
She hadn’t dared to kill Lin Changsheng.
All she could do was plead.
When Zhou Yiyi looked up at Lin Changsheng again, the madness was gone from Lin Changsheng’s eyes.
What replaced it was cold disdain—like she was staring at a worthless insect.
The smile that had once curled at Lin Changsheng’s lips had completely vanished.
Exhaling a deep breath, Lin Changsheng spoke, her tone laced with disappointment,
“Tears are meaningless.
If there’s no bl00d, there’s no pain.
And if there’s no pain… how can there be obedience?”
Zhou Yiyi knew then—it was over.
Her career, her sister’s future—everything was finished.
Lin Changsheng bent down and picked up the dagger, towering above Zhou Yiyi like a predator over its prey.
“Threatening someone isn’t done like this,” she said coolly.
“If you don’t even have the courage to kill, how could you ever make me submit?
You have to make me feel pain.”
Rolling up her sleeve, Lin Changsheng revealed several faint, old scars on her arm.
Without hesitation, she lightly dragged the blade across her skin.
Bl00d quickly welled up from the fine cut.
Lin Changsheng gently licked the wound, the bl00d staining her lips a deep, striking red.
Zhou Yiyi could do nothing but cry silently.
She couldn’t even form words anymore.
Disappointed, Lin Changsheng lost all interest in her.
She returned to her chair and lazily lit a cigarette.
Smoke curled around her, obscuring her face.
Bl00d still dripped steadily from her arm, but she seemed utterly oblivious to the pain.
After what felt like an eternity, Zhou Yiyi finally heard Lin Changsheng’s cold, emotionless voice,
“What’s your sister’s name again?”
Zhou Yiyi didn’t know why, after everything, Lin Changsheng ultimately agreed to save her sister.
Perhaps it was for her own purposes.
Perhaps she wanted another subject for her experiments.
But one thing was certain:
the drug Lin Changsheng provided truly worked.
Very quickly, Wen Lier’s condition began to improve.
However, the treatment was not a cure—
once the drug was withdrawn, the disease would flare up again violently.
Later, in order to better monitor Wen Lier’s condition, Lin Changsheng pulled some strings to get her into Mo Corporation.
She arranged for her to take on the simplest task: tending to the flowers.
Though the reason given was to observe her health, to Zhou Yiyi, it always felt more like surveillance.
Later, when the new generation of inhibitors entered development, Lin Changsheng increased the concentration of the Everlasting Flower extract in the formula.
Zhou Yiyi’s role was simply to turn a blind eye and make sure the submitted reports looked clean and justified, ensuring that no one would spot anything suspicious.
As for what consequences the increased concentration might bring, Zhou Yiyi had no idea.
Most of the experimental data was completely controlled by Lin Changsheng.
Ever since that day—ever since the dagger incident—Zhou Yiyi had lived in instinctive fear of her.
That crazed look in Lin Changsheng’s eyes…
Zhou Yiyi knew she would never forget it for the rest of her life.
