- Chapter 42 - How Dare You Covet the Great Lord of the Green Land!
Yulxi and her companions were traveling through a tunnel reserved exclusively for the Drow. Normally, any creature daring to trespass here would be considered an affront to the Drow and would be immediately killed. However, with Blay City in chaos, no one was paying attention to this passage.
Magical light emanated from an arched doorway ahead, revealing the intricately carved spiders adorning its surface. Beyond the arch, two massive spider guardians stood watch, ready to attack any non-Drow creature that entered.
“Do we really need to enter the Drow city directly?” Lucian asked, frowning.
“Finding the right path to Blay City within these endless tunnels is already a challenge. What do you think?” Veranse replied cheerfully, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. If Yulxi hadn’t gripped her wrist, she might have already darted through the archway to join the spider guardians.
At that moment, chaos erupted from the arched gate, accompanied by an intense surge of magical energy. The Abyssal Spiders’ eerie shrieks surged forth like a tidal wave, sending a shockwave through the air. Yulxi raised an eyebrow as several thick, hairy spider legs twitched violently within the gate, green bl00d oozing out and emitting a foul stench.
“It seems the outer city of Blay City has already fallen to the monsters,” Veranse sighed, crossing herself with a pitying expression, as if mourning the uncertain fate of the unfortunate Drow.
Yulxi’s only remaining option was to pass through the arched gate.
Naturally, Lucian still objected, arguing that entering Blay City now would be even more dangerous. But Yulxi completely ignored her. As for Veranse, her smile remained radiant, but persuading her to dissuade Yulxi was utterly impossible.
The spider guardians behind the gate were too preoccupied with their own demise to notice the intruders. The surviving spiders twitched uncontrollably, lacking even the strength to stand. With Lolth’s eternal slumber, the city had been abandoned by the Gods. Yet the spider guardians had managed to inflict some damage: two Bearfolk invaders lay poisoned on the ground, the shattered potion beside them leaking a corrosive liquid that hissed and emitted white smoke.
“Is that a potion crafted by a mage?” Yulxi mused, her expression thoughtful.
“Perhaps,” Lucian replied, gripping her sword and vigilantly scanning their surroundings, adopting a defensive stance.
Veranse smiled faintly. “Don’t be so tense. Lord Yulshi is here.”
Lucian’s face twitched slightly.
This was a siege battle. Even if it was only the outer city of Blay City, it demonstrated the enemy’s formidable strength. If even the Drow couldn’t hold them back, how could three of them possibly stand a chance? How could she not be nervous? If she could regain her full strength, she might be able to move through the battlefield like a ghost, but she had to admit that in her current state, she was nothing but a burden.
As they spoke, the Great Dragon’s roar reverberated across the city.
At that moment, the Drow of Blay City had gathered near the Temple, their faces grave. None of the previous “extermination wars” had ever brought them such a palpable sense of impending doom, such a stark warning of death.
As for the Green Dragon Masatya, her fury stemmed purely from being insulted. Her massive body was covered in forest-green scales, smooth and resilient as shimmering emeralds. She spewed clouds of toxic green mist at the swarm of repulsive Gray Demons swarming beneath the city walls—but the demons were impervious to blades and magic alike, immortal and constantly spreading corruption.
The creatures of the Underdark had never encountered anything so vile, nor were they familiar with the Holy See’s methods. They were utterly helpless against the Gray Demons.
Hidden in the distance, the mage watched the scene with satisfaction. He had paid a great price to summon this horde of Gray Demons. With his power, he should have long since become a Legendary Mage, but he had abandoned his path to advancement, channeling his vast Magic Power solely into summoning the demons. Each time he summoned an agent of the Lord God into the mortal realm, he was left weakened for a time, forcing him to hide in the Underdark and wait for his Magic Power to slowly recover. During this process, he permanently lost a portion of his power, but he didn’t care. The value of the Great Dragon and the Drow more than compensated for his losses.
“The sacred power cannot dispel these monsters,” the Drow priestesses murmured, their faces grim. They watched Fila Duran anxiously, hoping she would receive guidance from the Great Matron. But Fila merely maintained a cold expression, casting Death Ward and Monster Summoning spells.
Blay City’s future looked bleak.
This thought echoed in the hearts of all the Drow.
The mage was determined to conquer Blay City, sparing no expense to achieve his goal.
The Green Dragon knew this was no mere skirmish. Her massive, twenty-meter-long body stretched out as she spread her wings and soared above the city. She roared, her sharp fangs gleaming menacingly. Her objective was clear: expose the hidden mage, and the Gray Demons would cease to be a threat. She couldn’t kill those entities, but she could flee—these mindless creatures wouldn’t pursue.
Now fighting in earnest, the Green Dragon unleashed Dragon Language Magic with lightning speed. As an adult dragon who had slumbered through multiple cycles, she had inherited considerable magical knowledge. The spell’s colossal power swept forward like a tempest. While the Gray Demons remained unaffected, the mage’s Goblin army was annihilated in an instant by the Dragon Language Magic.
Ignoring the Gray Demons, the colossal Great Dragon could rightfully claim to be the undisputed ruler.
“How dare you covet the great Lord of the Greenlands! Mashtadia will make you pay dearly!” the Green Dragon’s furious roar echoed through the air.
Meanwhile, Yulxi and Veranse had gradually approached the main assault point of the mage army. Though they were concealed by invisibility magic, their cover dissolved as they neared the inner city. The sudden appearance of humans startled the Drow, quickly igniting their anger and malice. Even with a formidable enemy at their doorstep, the Drow couldn’t tolerate the intrusion of uninvited guests.
Yulxi effortlessly disarmed a Drow assassin who lunged at her with twin blades. As stalkers of the Underdark, the Drow were naturally suited to assassination, yet they couldn’t evade Yulxi’s perception. Unconcerned by these minor threats, Yulxi focused on the Gray Demons swarming ahead. If this continued, the Drow would inevitably be corrupted. The likelihood of Underdark shadow walkers reaching the surface remained low, far less urgent than the threat posed by the Red Maple Territory.
“Veranse, cast Holy Domain Purification on them,” Yulxi instructed.
“The merciful Lord God extends His love even to heretics,” Veranse replied softly. “But I fear your kindness may be misplaced.” She fixed her gaze intently on Yulxi. “You clearly possess the magic to instantly kill the Gray Demon. Why resort to potions?”
It was a technique beyond her comprehension, an unknown.
And she harbored an insatiable curiosity to explore the mysteries of magic.
“I don’t want to waste my strength,” Yulxi answered.
After dealing with the mage, would the Drow and Green Dragon show gratitude? Both were notorious for their treachery on the Fei’er Continent, masters of repaying kindness with betrayal.
Veranse nodded, accepting Yulxi’s explanation. A faint smile played on her lips as she effortlessly detected the Drow lurking in the shadows. The moment the Drow moved to strike, she cast a binding spell. Her magical cloak granted her partial resistance to magic, limiting the binding’s duration to a mere instant. Yet it was enough for Veranse to slip a Holy Domain Purification into the Drow’s cloak collar. “May the merciful Lord God protect you,” she murmured.
A cold glint flashed in the Drow’s eyes as she broke free from her restraints. Her first instinct was to swing her scimitar at Veranse, a mocking, icy smile twisting her lips as she stared at the motionless figure. Just as the blade was about to strike, a clash of metal rang out. Yulxi, sword in hand, stood with a stern, impassive expression. A surge of power erupted from her blade, forcing the Drow back.
The Drow regained her footing, shaking her aching wrist as she glared warily at Yulxi.
“Lord Yulshi, thank you,” Veranse said, her eyes curving into a smile. Golden strands of hair fluttered in the wind, making her look like an Elf who had inadvertently wandered into the heart of battle.
“Stop fooling around,” Yulxi frowned slightly, refusing to be deceived by Veranse’s innocent facade.
The Drow’s gaze gradually shifted to disdain. Drow society prized power above all else, despising any sign of weakness. She flashed a defiant grin at Yulxi, but when her eyes landed on Veranse, her expression twisted into mockery.
“Alright,” Veranse shrugged, her eyebrows drooping slightly as she sighed inwardly.
The young dark-skinned Drow was far less charming than her surface-dwelling cousin, Flah.
Unaffected by fear, the Drow seemed to have forgotten the brutal conflict raging outside the city walls, focused solely on defeating her formidable opponent.
“Shadow Walk! Be careful!” Lucian’s expression tightened.
Even as the words left her lips, she saw the Holy Maiden of the Holy Light Church unleash the same magic, requiring no incantation at all. The clash within the shadows sent subtle ripples of Magic Power through the air. Within moments, both figures reappeared. The Drow, her face contorted in fury, deployed her most prized technique, but the clash of blades sent sparks flying. She quickly realized she was no match for this seemingly frail woman!
“A sword… a swordsman?” Lucian stared at Veranse in astonishment.
Throughout their journey, Yulxi had always led the way, while the Holy Maiden had maintained an air of naive innocence, as if untouched by the world’s harsh realities. This had led Lucian to assume the Holy Maiden was a priestess in need of a knight’s protection. But it was now clear: the Holy Maiden was no weakling, and Lucian herself was unworthy to be a knight.
Yulxi glanced at Lucian, a hint of pity in his eyes.
“A swordsman? What’s so strange about that?”
Just wait until they see Veranse use Forbidden Magic. How shocked will they be then?
The Holy Maiden of the Light Church? A complete fraud.
Veranse was deliberately toying with the Drow, trying to stall them and perhaps even hoping to see Blay City fall to the Gray Demons. But Yulxi didn’t want the situation to spiral out of control. Her gaze lingered on Veranse’s face for a moment, as if some suppressed emotions had finally found release. Veranse’s eyes were now cold and resolute, no longer those of a delicate, perpetually smiling puppet. The words that had risen to Yulxi’s lips were swallowed back, and she rephrased her statement.
Turning to the Drow warrior, she said, “The destruction of Blay City has nothing to do with us. But are the Drow truly willing to let the Spider Temple become a breeding ground for these monstrous Gray Demons?”
