Chapter 13: Better to Wrong Others Than…
Zhou Yining quickly left the office. She returned to the classroom after the class had ended.
Although Xu Yueming disliked Zhou Yining, he couldn’t resist his curiosity for gossip. He risked getting scolded and approached her. “Hey, why did the English teacher call you to the office?”
“We argued.” Zhou Yining drank a few sips of water and said calmly.
Xu Yueming nearly fell off his seat. He eagerly asked, “You got him mad again? I heard you turned in a blank answer sheet. Is that true?”
“It’s true. What’s so surprising? He doesn’t like me, and I don’t like him. That’s normal.” Zhou Yining spoke about turning in a blank sheet as if it were as simple as drinking water.
Xu Yueming couldn’t help but give her a thumbs-up. “Impressive. A real woman.”
Saying this, he got up from his seat and hurriedly shared the juicy gossip with others in the class. “Oh my gosh, Zhou Yining really turned in a blank sheet. Old Cao called her to the office, and they argued.”
“Wow, Zhou Yining’s going wild. She actually dared to turn in a blank sheet.”
“I think so too. But she’s pretty bold. Honestly, I also hate Old Cao. Always with that balding hairstyle, and he looks at girls with creepy eyes.”
“Yeah, exactly.”
Zhou Yining didn’t care much. She wasn’t someone who minded others’ opinions. People should live in the moment and for themselves. Others’ lives had nothing to do with her.
Soon, the bell for the next self-study session rang. Xu Yueming returned to his seat. For some reason, in just two days, he felt Zhou Yining’s aura had changed.
Before, when he talked to Zhou Yining, she was timid and wouldn’t even look him in the eye. Now, she dared to turn in a blank sheet and argue with a teacher. He decided he’d better not mess with her in the future.
Zhou Yining worked on the original owner’s homework and tests. But to her, they were too easy.
She took a blank sheet of paper and started writing an outline. After school, she planned to go to an internet café to write and submit something.
The supervising teacher for this class was the politics teacher. She had heard the argument in the office and became curious about Zhou Yining, who was usually quiet. Since geography and history tests were already graded, and she was grading politics, she pulled out Zhou Yining’s answer sheet.
She glanced at it and was impressed. Zhou Yining’s handwriting was beautiful, with every stroke bold and elegant. She even thought Zhou Yining’s handwriting was better than her own.
The politics teacher grew interested. She reviewed Zhou Yining’s answers to the major questions in geography and politics. She was shocked to find every answer was correct, hitting all the key points.
The politics teacher was stunned. She started grading Zhou Yining’s test. Almost every answer was perfect. Only one question, where Zhou Yining’s response wasn’t explicit enough, cost her two points. Everything else was correct.
The politics teacher was confused. Was Class 19 hiding a dark horse?
Teacher Wu looked at Zhou Yining with curiosity. She wanted to see which subject Zhou Yining was reviewing.
Teacher Wu stood up and patrolled the classroom. When she reached Zhou Yining, she stopped.
She saw Zhou Yining writing on a blank sheet. Upon closer inspection, Zhou Yining was writing a novel during self-study?
Teacher Wu coughed lightly and reminded her, “Even after exams, you can’t slack off. Don’t do other things. Take out your book and review.”
Zhou Yining felt the intense gaze behind her. She smiled at Teacher Wu and obediently took out a politics workbook to work on.
Teacher Wu left satisfied. Once she was gone, Zhou Yining pulled out the paper again. Being obedient was impossible. She needed to make money now!
At 9:30, Zhou Yining finally made it to the end of class. Her outline was nearly done. She planned to write 6,000 words to submit. If it passed, she’d continue.
She packed her bag. Tian Xue came over to her.
“You really argued with the teacher?”
“Yeah, he started trouble with me first. I don’t think I’m wrong.” Zhou Yining said坦然ly.
Tian Xue advised, “It’s better to avoid trouble. He’s a teacher. Going against him won’t end well for you.”
“Not necessarily. I like facing challenges.” Zhou Yining didn’t care.
Tian Xue said softly, “But I liked how you were before.”
“What?” Zhou Yining thought she misheard. Did Tian Xue mean the original owner’s timid self? What did she mean?
“Nothing. By the way, what are you going to do about the confession wall? Did you find out who posted it?” Tian Xue asked.
“Not yet. But Teacher Chen knows about it. She said if I can’t handle it, she’ll get the school to remove the confession wall post.”
“Oh, that’s good. Those love letters aren’t good for you or Zhang Ye. It’s better to delete them.” Tian Xue murmured.
After they parted, Zhou Yining went straight to the internet café.
She paid and opened a computer. Zhou Yining started writing based on her outline. She had searched a lot of information on her phone over the past two days.
This world’s online literature wasn’t as developed as her previous one. Many genres hadn’t emerged yet. The short story she was writing today was a test, a supernatural ghost-catching type.
Once she opened the document, she wrote furiously. Zhou Yining was fast, writing 3,000 words an hour. But submissions usually required around 10,000 words. She had to stop and planned to continue tomorrow.
She got home at 10:30 p.m. Zhao Xiuna heard the security door open and quietly came out of her room. “Why are you back so late? I was about to call you.”
“We had monthly exams these past two days. Teachers used evening self-study to go over questions. I’ll probably be home around this time for a few days.” Zhou Yining explained calmly.
“Oh, okay. Wash your hands and change. I’ll cook you noodles. I made beef sauce today. You’ll love it with noodles.” Zhao Xiuna smiled at Zhou Yining and hurried to the kitchen to cook.
Zhou Yining looked at Zhao Xiuna with mixed feelings. Did Zhao Xiuna really not care about the original owner? Maybe she cared a little. But if the original owner ever clashed with Zhou Yuanfei or Zhou Jiaming, Zhao Xiuna would unhesitatingly choose them.
Her love for the original owner came with conditions. Zhou Yining found it somewhat laughable.
She sighed, took her pajamas, and went to the bathroom to change.
When she came out after washing her face, a steaming bowl of beef sauce noodles was on the dining table in the living room, topped with a fried egg.
Zhao Xiuna said softly, “Come eat. You must be starving. Your dad and brother are probably asleep. Let’s keep it quiet.”
Zhou Yining walked to the table and sat down. Looking at the noodles, her stomach growled.
Zhao Xiuna smiled gently at her. “Eat quick, or it’ll get soggy and won’t taste good.”
“Okay.” Zhou Yining mixed the noodles and ate heartily. Zhao Xiuna’s cooking was indeed delicious.
The beef in the sauce was tender, with wood ear mushrooms and peanuts as side ingredients, adding layers of flavor. Zhou Yining ate with relish.
Seeing Zhou Yining eat happily, Zhao Xiuna chose her words carefully and said, “Yining, I want to talk to you about something.”
Zhou Yining looked up at her. “Go ahead.”
“Your dad isn’t a bad person. He got mad this morning. Go apologize to him tomorrow.”
Zhou Yining suddenly found the noodles unappetizing. So Zhao Xiuna’s care for her daughter came with conditions. Was she trying to make her bow to that father and son?
Zhou Yining put down her chopsticks and looked directly at Zhao Xiuna.
Zhao Xiuna couldn’t withstand Zhou Yining’s sharp gaze and looked away first. “We’re a family. How can you not care about your dad and brother?”
“Why can’t I? Didn’t Zhou Yuanfei say he’d stop caring about me when I turn 18? Why should I care about him? And don’t try to persuade me. I’m not here to support my brother. Zhou Jiaming’s life has nothing to do with me. Don’t try to brainwash me. I won’t listen.” Zhou Yining finished speaking, looked at the half-eaten noodles, and lost her appetite.
She stood up, grabbed her change of clothes, and went to the bathroom.
Zhao Xiuna’s eyes reddened. She didn’t understand why her once obedient and considerate daughter had suddenly changed.
The original daughter understood and cared for her. Why had she completely changed in just two days?
Zhou Yining wasn’t in a good mood while showering. The original owner was truly unlucky to have such a family. A father who acted like a tyrant, always ready to raise a hand. A brother who was just a troublemaking fool. And a mother who always urged her to keep the peace, never asking who was right or wrong, just wanting her to bow first.
If she were the original owner, such a family would have broken her heart. But she wasn’t the original. With a family like this, she’d rather blow it all up.
She couldn’t help it. That was her personality. Better to wrong others than wrong herself.
After showering, the living room lights were off. Zhao Xiuna had probably gone back to her room.
Zhou Yining didn’t care. She had just charged her phone, and it was fully charged now.
She lay on the single bed in the dining room, scrolling through her phone. She immediately saw Jiang Xianzhi messaging her on WeChat.
