Chapter 2: What? You’re Really Going to Call the Police?…
Zhou Yining glanced at the girl again. She had straight bangs, a timid demeanor, and a small, thin frame.
Thinking she was probably a friend of the original Zhou Yining, Zhou Yining took the phone from her hand. She casually scrolled through it and saw the confession wall filled with pictures of love letters the original Zhou Yining had written to Zhang Ye.
[In countless sleepless nights, I think of you. You are my untouchable moonlight.]
[There are four seasons in a year, and I miss you in every one.]
…
There were many similar lines. The anonymous comment section below was like a boiling pot, brimming with unmasked malice toward the original Zhou Yining.
[God, Zhou Yining, this b1tch has no shame. She thinks she’s worthy of Brother Ye?]
[So disgusting. If I were Zhang Ye, I’d fight her.]
[Being liked by someone like her is such a burden. Fvck, so embarrassing.]
[Damn, so explicit. Has Zhou Yining been selling herself out there? A public bus or what?]
Zhou Yining calmly looked at everything on the confession wall. After a while, she returned the phone to the girl. “Alright, I’ve seen it all.”
“What?” The girl was shocked. She thought Zhou Yining would cover her face and cry in despair, ready to comfort her. She never expected Zhou Yining to act like nothing happened.
She stammered, “Are you okay?”
“What could be wrong with me? I didn’t do anything wrong. The person who posted my private love letters online is the one who should be in trouble.” With that, Zhou Yining ignored the girl and started fiddling with her own phone quickly.
Xu Yueming, after messing around with some other boys, returned to his seat and sneered at Zhou Yining. “Only someone like Tian Xue would be friends with you. Birds of a feather.”
Zhou Yining shot him a cold glance. “So, your friends are all maggots from the toilet? Only maggots are attracted to sh1t.”
“Who’re you calling sh1t?” Xu Yueming’s face turned red with anger, but just then, the homeroom teacher, who taught Chinese, walked in.
Xu Yueming swallowed his anger. Zhou Yining almost thought he’d pass out from holding it in.
Zhou Yining sat up straight and took out her Chinese textbook. Although it was the second half of her second year of high school, the third-year curriculum was almost finished. Once they entered their third year, they’d start comprehensive review.
The homeroom teacher, Chen Yitong, was 27 years old. This was her first time teaching a graduating class, so she was very strict about the students’ grades.
As soon as class started, Chen Yitong called someone to recite “The Song of the Pipa.” Her eyes landed on Xu Yueming, whose face was flushed.
“Xu Yueming, what are you fidgeting for? Stand up and recite ‘The Song of the Pipa.’”
Xu Yueming, still fuming from Zhou Yining’s words, was called out by the teacher. He stood up, his mind blank. He couldn’t remember how “The Song of the Pipa” started.
Chen Yitong frowned in displeasure. “You’re almost in your third year, yet you’re always goofing off. What are you thinking about? Stand for this class and reflect on yourself.”
Then, her gaze fell on Zhou Yining. “Zhou Yining, you stand up and recite.”
“Yes, Teacher.” Zhou Yining stood and smiled at Chen Yitong. “By the Xunyang River at night, seeing off a guest, maple leaves and reeds rustle in the autumn air…”
Zhou Yining’s voice was clear. Unlike before, she didn’t blush nervously when answering questions.
She stood tall, meeting Chen Yitong’s gaze without flinching, and recited the ancient text fluently.
Chen Yitong was surprised for a moment. Though new to teaching, she thought she knew her students well.
In her mind, Zhou Yining was a shy girl who blushed when speaking to others. Why did she feel different today? Not only was her energy higher, but her entire demeanor had changed.
Still, it was a positive change. After Zhou Yining finished reciting “The Song of the Pipa,” Chen Yitong nodded for her to sit, then said to Xu Yueming, “Look at your desk mate. She’s improving. Then look at you, always goofing off, doing who knows what.”
Xu Yueming nearly ground his teeth to bits, glaring at Zhou Yining with a flushed face.
Chen Yitong called a few more students to recite, finding two more who couldn’t. Her expression grew worse. “You’re not studying for me. If you can’t even remember basic material, how do you expect to do well on the college entrance exam? Those who failed today’s recitation, copy it ten times as punishment.”
After scolding the students, Chen Yitong began the lesson.
Zhou Yining followed along attentively. Her grades in her previous life were excellent, though years of work had dulled some memories. But once she engaged with high school material, those dusty memories resurfaced quickly.
She listened intently the whole class, feeling that a week would be enough to get into the groove. After that, she could start practicing problems.
When class ended, Xu Yueming slumped into his seat. He’d had a rough morning and didn’t dare bother Zhou Yining again.
During the long break, a crowd gathered at the door of Class 19. Someone poked their head in and shouted, “Zhou Yining, someone’s looking for you.”
Laughter followed the announcement.
Zhou Yining glanced over calmly. She never liked avoiding problems—if there was an issue, she’d deal with it.
She stood up briskly, back straight, and walked out.
Outside the classroom, she scanned the crowd. Not only were her classmates watching the commotion, but students from other classes were also looking her way.
Her gaze soon landed on a girl a few steps away. The girl had fair skin, a delicate nose, and lively fox-like eyes staring at her.
Zhou Yining noticed her because she was far prettier than those around her, naturally drawing attention.
The next moment, the girl stepped forward arrogantly, holding a pink notebook. She thrust it toward Zhou Yining and said sharply, “Can you stop littering your love letters to Zhang Ye? Why was this on my desk?”
Zhou Yining looked at her steadily. “Did you post those pictures on the confession wall?”
“Are you crazy, Zhou Yining? Why would I do that? It’s you who shouldn’t leave your sappy stuff lying around.” The girl seemed furious, trembling as she spoke.
Zhou Yining took the pink notebook and looked at her coldly. “So you’ve read what’s inside? Then you’ve also violated my privacy.”
“Who wants to read your stuff? If I hadn’t found it on my desk this morning, you think I’d look?”
Zhou Yining kept looking at her calmly. The girl stared back like an angry little fox. Zhou Yining thought it was unlikely she posted the pictures on the confession wall.
But that needed confirmation. She nodded at the girl. “This notebook wasn’t left on your desk by me. Anything else?”
Since the original Zhou Yining was timid and sensitive, she’d hide a diary about her crush, not leave something so important on someone else’s desk. Someone was clearly trying to harm her, as the outline in her mind mentioned she’d faced school bullying.
The girl seemed enraged by Zhou Yining’s attitude. She took another step forward, glaring. “You’re just leaving like that?”
Zhou Yining nodded calmly. “Yeah. Got anything else to say?”
Seeing her unhurried demeanor, the girl got angrier. “Zhou Yining, stop clinging to Zhang Ye. He won’t like you.”
Zhou Yining nodded in agreement. “Don’t worry, I’m over him. Even if I were interested in you, I wouldn’t be interested in him.”
“You!” The girl, unable to outtalk Zhou Yining, flushed with anger.
Zhou Yining smiled at her. “Nothing else this time, right? I’m going.”
“Wait.” The girl stopped her again. Seeing Zhou Yining’s smile, she got even madder. “I didn’t take your notebook.”
Zhou Yining nodded. “Got it.”
With that, she carried the notebook back to class, ignoring the girl.
Two others with the girl weren’t pleased and started complaining about Zhou Yining.
“Zhizhi, ignore her. She’s so tacky and poor. Brother Ye wouldn’t like someone like her,” said a girl with glasses, disdainfully.
Another with a baby face chimed in, “Yeah, what’s she acting all high and mighty for? She deserves a lesson.”
Jiang Xianzhi stared at Class 19’s door, fuming. What did Zhou Yining mean? She’d said the notebook wasn’t hers, so did Zhou Yining believe her or not?
She took a few deep breaths, snorted, and stormed back to her class.
Back in class, Zhou Yining looked at the notebook but didn’t flip through it. She placed it carefully in her desk.
She picked up her phone and started browsing the school’s confession wall, recording the screen, including all the comments.
Xu Yueming, who’d been roasted by her all morning and punished by standing for a class, was slumped over his desk. He glanced at Zhou Yining curiously. “What’re you doing?”
Zhou Yining looked at him faintly. “Recording evidence. Like I said, whoever leaked my privacy has broken the law.”
“What? You’re really going to call the police?” Xu Yueming shrank back. He’d also trash-talked Zhou Yining in the comment section. Thinking about it now, his back felt cold.
He asked tentatively, “You don’t have proof. Besides, the confession wall is anonymous. Even if you record it, you can’t tell who’s who.”
“You think the police are as dumb as you? That walnut-sized brain of yours should worry about yourself.” Zhou Yining mocked while backing up the recorded evidence to the cloud. She always liked to be thorough.
Xu Yueming wanted to argue, but remembering he’d also insulted her in the anonymous comments, he shut up, afraid Zhou Yining would target him first.
