Chapter 33: Reporting to the Police
After Zhou Yining returned home in the evening, she thought about what gift to give Jiang Xianzhi. With only six hundred yuan left, she couldn’t afford luxury items or even slightly expensive jewelry.
After some thought, Zhou Yining searched online for nearby pottery studios. In her previous life, to relax, she occasionally visited pottery studios to make decorative items. She decided to create a ceramic fox figurine, which would look nice after being painted.
She checked her phone and found the closest pottery studio was quite far. Time was tight, and she wanted to give the gift to Jiang Xianzhi by Saturday, so she needed to hurry with the creation.
Zhou Yining planned to skip lunch at home tomorrow to save time.
The next morning, Zhou Yining went to school as usual. After the morning exercises ended, Lin Shaohui and his group approached her again.
When Zhou Yining saw them from a distance, she started recording on her phone. She deliberately chose an open area on the playground where several cameras could capture them.
Lin Shaohui’s group surrounded Zhou Yining. She looked at them and asked, “What do you want now?”
“What? Zhou Yining, we heard you’re planning to deal with us?” Lin Shaohui said, staring intently at her.
Zhou Yining nodded calmly. “Those who harm others should face their deserved punishment. I’m a good citizen, so don’t use the word ‘deal,’” she said.
“Are you sick? This happened a year ago, and you’re still holding on. Besides, because of your issue, didn’t we already delete the video?” Lin Shaohui said, his chest heaving with anger. He was genuinely a bit scared of Zhou Yining now.
“My issue? Why not say it directly? You drove me to nearly jump off a building before. And whether that video was deleted, you know in your hearts,” Zhou Yining said, her gaze coldly fixed on the three.
Han Fei, unable to hold back, tried to grab Zhou Yining. She quickly shook off his hand and warned, “There are cameras everywhere here. I advise you not to act rashly, or the consequences will be worse.”
Lin Shaohui pulled Han Fei back, rubbing his head in frustration. “What do you want? It’s just a video. Why won’t you let it go?” he said.
“What do I want? That’s what I should ask you. Sneaking into the girls’ changing room to secretly film—how sleazy do you have to be to do that? Then using the video to threaten us—does that sound like something humans do?” Zhou Yining said, her tone mocking, not backing down at all.
“You’re really going to do this, huh?” Lin Shaohui asked, his expression cold and stern.
Zhou Yining nodded. “Hmm, what? Want to attack me here? Then go to jail?” she said.
“Zhou Yining, my family has status in Nanchuan City. You think this small matter can send me to jail?” Lin Shaohui said.
“You can try and find out. Also, let me remind you, Han Fei and Lan Guangwen are minors, but you’re already an adult,” Zhou Yining said, her lips curving into a smile. Though she smiled, Lin Shaohui felt a chill down his spine.
“You, don’t scare me. It’s just a lousy video. I don’t believe you can send me to jail. If you’re so capable, go ahead,” Lin Shaohui said.
“Hmm, then wait and see,” Zhou Yining said, remaining calm throughout. Seeing they had nothing more to say, she walked straight toward the teaching building.
Instead of returning to class, she went directly to the teacher’s office to request a leave.
Chen Yitong saw Zhou Yining and asked, “What’s wrong? Something up?”
“Teacher, I’m feeling a bit unwell and want to take leave to go to the hospital,” Zhou Yining said, looking weak.
Chen Yitong asked nervously, “What’s the matter? Is it serious? Let me take you to the school clinic first.”
“No need, Teacher. My condition can’t be treated at the clinic. I need to go to a hospital outside school. I’d like to take a day off today,” Zhou Yining said.
Since Zhou Yining rarely asked for leave and had improved her studies, Chen Yitong was more concerned about her. “Should I call your family to inform them?” she asked.
“No need, Teacher. My family situation is a bit complicated. I’ll handle it myself. It’s really not a big illness,” Zhou Yining said.
Chen Yitong was still worried. As she wrote the leave slip, she said, “If anything happens, call me. Don’t hesitate or tough it out alone. Want me to take you to the hospital?”
“No need, Teacher. I’ll take a taxi. It’s really not a big issue. Don’t worry,” Zhou Yining said, declining quickly.
“Alright, be safe,” Chen Yitong said.
“Hmm, thank you, Teacher,” Zhou Yining said.
She took the leave slip and left the office, sending a message to Zhong Yumeng on her phone.
Zhou Yining: [I just got my leave approved. I’ll need your help to contact the psychologist.]
Class had just started, but Zhong Yumeng replied instantly upon receiving Zhou Yining’s message.
Zhong Yumeng: [Okay, hold on. I’ll send you the location and the doctor’s contact info. Just call her when you arrive.]
Zhou Yining: [OK, (kneeling in thanks jpg)]
Zhong Yumeng’s lips curved into a smile. She sent a WeChat message to the doctor, saying her friend would arrive soon.
She then sent the hospital’s location and the doctor’s contact info to Zhou Yining before putting her phone away.
After leaving the school gate, Zhou Yining took a taxi. She called the psychologist Zhong Yumeng referred her to, who told her to come directly to the consultation room.
Twenty minutes later, the taxi stopped at Nanchuan City’s largest private hospital. Zhou Yining went straight to the consultation room on the fifth floor.
Ten minutes later, she successfully obtained a diagnosis report. To keep up appearances, the doctor asked her to stay in the consultation room for half an hour before leaving, and Zhou Yining complied.
She looked at the diagnosis report in her hand, her lips curving into a smile. Now that all the evidence was gathered, she could report to the police. But before that, she planned to prepare Jiang Xianzhi’s birthday gift first.
After staying long enough, Zhou Yining left the consultation room. She took a taxi to a nearby pottery studio and sent Zhong Yumeng a WeChat message while in the car.
Zhou Yining: [All done, thanks.]
Zhong Yumeng: [When are you reporting to the police?]
Zhou Yining: [This afternoon. I have some things to handle this morning. Thanks again. (Doggy bowing jpg)]
Zhong Yumeng: [Let me know after you report.]
Zhou Yining: [Got it.]
She chatted with Zhong Yumeng for a bit, then put her phone away. Ten minutes later, the taxi stopped at the pottery studio’s entrance.
Zhou Yining got out and entered the studio. After confirming the prices, she began working on the little fox figurine.
The owner noticed her skill and asked, “Have you done this before?”
Zhou Yining smiled and replied, “A little.”
“I thought so. You seem familiar with this,” the owner said.
Zhou Yining smiled but didn’t respond further. She shaped the clay bit by bit into a little fox, using several tools to refine it. Fortunately, she had some experience.
After basic shaping, the fox’s body and head were formed. She used a knife to carve “Zhizhi” on the base.
Then, Zhou Yining used tools to carefully detail the fox’s eyes and tail. An hour later, she completed the little fox.
The owner placed the fox, along with other customers’ pottery, into the kiln for the first high-temperature firing. After it was removed, Zhou Yining could paint it.
She chose orange for the body and a reddish hue for the tail. After painting, she placed the fox back in the kiln for a second high-temperature firing.
Zhou Yining waited a while at the studio until the fox cooled naturally. She picked it up to examine it closely.
The fox’s body had a smooth glaze, fiery red and very cute. The “Zhizhi” on the base was clear. Zhou Yining was very satisfied with her creation.
She selected a packaging box and bag at the studio, packed the fox, and left.
Zhou Yining checked the time. It was nearly 12:30 p.m. As she left the pottery studio, she received a call from Zhao Xiuna.
“Why aren’t you back yet?” Zhao Xiuna’s voice came through the phone.
“Hmm, I had something to do today. I made plans to eat with a classmate and forgot to tell you,” Zhou Yining said calmly, planning to eat and then report to the police.
“Why eat out for no reason? Outside food is expensive and unhygienic. There’s still plenty of food at home,” Zhao Xiuna nagged, clearly not wanting Zhou Yining to eat out.
“Hmm, I already made plans with them. It’d be rude not to go. That’s it, I’m hanging up,” Zhou Yining said, ending the call.
Zhao Xiuna sighed, sitting on a stool. Zhou Jiaming, lounging on the sofa playing on his phone, fanned the flames. “I told you Zhou Yining’s definitely dating. Now she doesn’t even come back for lunch. That’s something,” he said.
Zhao Xiuna felt anxious, but her daughter wouldn’t listen at all, ignoring both soft and hard approaches. She had no way to deal with her.
“Enough, say less, or you’ll upset your sister again,” Zhao Xiuna said.
“I’m not scared of her,” Zhou Jiaming said defiantly.
Meanwhile, Zhou Yining found a fast-food restaurant to eat. The taxi and pottery studio cost her 130 yuan, leaving her with just over four hundred yuan, so she didn’t dare eat anything too fancy.
She ordered a rice bowl and a soup, then ate slowly in the restaurant. After finishing, she stayed a while before leaving.
At 2:30 p.m., she took a taxi to the police station near her school to report a case.
The officer who received her was Ji Ying, who recognized Zhou Yining. “You’re reporting? Did something happen at home again?” she asked.
Ji Ying remembered visiting Zhou Yining’s home before. Her family’s odd behavior left a strong impression.
“It’s not a family matter. I experienced school bullying,” Zhou Yining said.
“What? Come with me. My colleague and I will take a preliminary statement,” Ji Ying said, leading Zhou Yining to the office.
“Sit down, take your time, no rush,” Ji Ying said.
“Okay,” Zhou Yining said.
