After Becoming the Abused Heroine in a Campus Story - Chapter 34: Arrest
Chapter 34: Arrest
“One year ago, during our school’s summer sports meet, I and a few girls were changing in the girls’ locker room. A boy wearing a wig, pretending to be a girl, sneaked in and secretly filmed us changing. Later, they spread the video within a small group in class, used it to threaten me, bullied me, and drove me to nearly jump off a building. That’s roughly what happened,” Zhou Yining said calmly.
Ji Ying’s brows furrowed tightly. “Something from a year ago would be hard to gather evidence for now. The surveillance footage is likely deleted, and if this didn’t cause you substantial harm, the punishment for those involved might not be severe.”
“I’ve gathered all the evidence, including the video they filmed and various recordings, enough to prove they did it. Also, this morning, Lin Shaohui and his group confronted me, causing me significant psychological trauma. You can check the school’s surveillance to verify. And I went to the hospital this morning. Here’s my diagnosis report,” Zhou Yining said, pulling out the freshly issued diagnosis document.
Ji Ying’s colleague spoke up, “If it’s really bullying, it’s not a small matter. Send us the videos first, and we’ll review them.”
“Okay,” Zhou Yining said, handing over the USB drive. Ji Ying’s colleague copied its contents onto the computer.
Ji Ying and her colleague watched the video and listened to all the recordings on Zhou Yining’s USB.
Ji Ying was stunned. “The evidence you provided is very complete. This is a serious criminal case, fully sufficient for filing. It saves us time collecting evidence. We can go to the school and arrest them now,” she said.
“Yes, all the evidence looks complete. The video and audio show no signs of editing, and you have a diagnosis report,” Ji Ying’s colleague added.
“Alright, wait here for a bit. I need to take people to your school to arrest them,” Ji Ying said.
“Okay,” Zhou Yining nodded.
At 4 p.m., three police cars stopped at the entrance of Nanchuan City No. 1 High School. After Ji Ying submitted her application and obtained an arrest warrant, she led four colleagues into the school.
Ji Ying instructed one colleague to retrieve the morning’s playground surveillance footage. She and the other three explained their purpose to the sophomore grade’s dean, showed the arrest warrant, and headed to Class 9 to make the arrests.
Lin Shaohui was dozing off during English class when a knock at the door startled him awake.
Ji Ying entered Class 9 with the homeroom teacher and addressed the teacher at the podium, “Hello, we’re from the police department. We need to take several suspects for questioning now.”
The English teacher was shocked. In her years of teaching, she had never seen police come to arrest students.
“Okay, please proceed,” she said.
Lin Shaohui, sitting below, trembled with shaking hands. He thought it couldn’t be him, but recalling his morning confrontation with Zhou Yining, he was terrified, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.
Han Fei and Lan Guangwen in the back row were the same, burying their heads low, fearing the police would notice them.
Ji Ying scanned the class and said, “Lin Shaohui, Han Fei, Lan Guangwen, you three are involved in a criminal case and have caused substantial mental harm to the victim. You need to come with us for investigation.”
“No, I didn’t do it, I didn’t,” Lin Shaohui said, his face pale with fright, his body trembling. Before he could finish, Ji Ying’s colleague stepped forward and handcuffed him.
“We have an arrest warrant from the police department. Please cooperate,” the male officer said, pulling Lin Shaohui to his feet.
“It wasn’t me. Did Zhou Yining report this? It was a year ago. Why won’t she let it go?” Lin Shaohui cried out, terrified. He was used to threatening others, not being intimidated himself.
“Whether it was you, we’ll find out at the station,” the male officer said, seeing his agitation. “I advise you not to struggle. We’re just taking you for questioning now. If you assault an officer, it’ll only get worse.”
Lin Shaohui’s legs went weak, and he cried while shaking.
Han Fei and Lan Guangwen were equally scared, shouting and struggling, but two officers restrained them.
“Alright, take them to the station for questioning. Don’t disrupt their class,” Ji Ying said, opening the door and signaling her colleagues to take them away.
Ji Ying turned to Class 9’s homeroom teacher. “We may need more information. Please come with us to assist in the investigation,” she said.
“Okay, officer,” the female teacher said. It was her first time dealing with such a situation, and she was dazed.
After the police left with the suspects, Class 9 erupted into discussion like a boiling pot.
“Wow, what did Lin Shaohui’s group do?”
“Yeah, it seems related to Zhou Yining.”
“So intense, arresting them at school. This is going to blow up.”
“What’s the situation?”
“No idea, but Lin Shaohui deserves it. He’s bullied plenty of people at school.”
The English teacher, seeing the chaos, restored order. “Enough, quiet down. You’re almost seniors. Focus on your own matters. Their issues have nothing to do with you. Pay attention, let’s continue,” she said.
After the scolding, the students quieted down, but only on the surface. Everyone was still thinking about Lin Shaohui’s group.
Some classes were having PE on the playground when Lin Shaohui’s group was taken away, so many students saw the police making arrests.
As Lin Shaohui got into the police car, he refused to give up, crying and shouting, “I didn’t do anything. You have no evidence. Why arrest me?”
Ji Ying sat beside him, looking at him coldly. “The police won’t wrongly arrest any good person or let any bad person slip through. You mentioned evidence—we’ve collected it all, including video, audio files, and even the victim’s diagnosis report. We have everything. You’ll understand at the station, so don’t get worked up. It won’t help,” she said.
“No way, how could she have the video?” Lin Shaohui said, incoherent with fear.
Ji Ying looked at him coldly. “You just admitted to the video. You’d better cooperate with the interrogation honestly,” she said.
“No, it wasn’t me. I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Lin Shaohui said, instinctively reaching for the car door. Of course, the door was locked, and he couldn’t open it.
Seeing his defiance, Ji Ying took out her body camera, asked the colleague in the front passenger seat to record, and held Lin Shaohui down to prevent him from moving. “I’m warning you, you’re obstructing official duties now. If convicted of multiple charges, the punishment will be harsher,” she said.
“I didn’t do it, I didn’t. I want to call my dad,” Lin Shaohui sobbed, breaking down.
“We’ll contact your parents. That’s not your concern. You just need to cooperate with our investigation,” Ji Ying said coldly.
She felt deep disgust for a sleazy guy who secretly filmed others changing. At the same time, she sympathized more with Zhou Yining.
That girl, not yet 18, was mistreated by her parents at home and faced such humiliating bullying at school. Thinking this, Ji Ying pressed Lin Shaohui’s body harder. With the body camera on, she was just enforcing the law normally.
“Let me go, let me go. I’m a high school student. I need to take the college entrance exam. You can’t arrest me,” Lin Shaohui cried, tears and snot running down his face. Ji Ying ignored him, pressing him harder into the seat.
In another police car, the homeroom teacher sat in the front passenger seat. With so many people, they had brought multiple cars. She worried anxiously, fearing these students might implicate her, though she had no knowledge of the matter.
Twenty minutes later, the three police cars stopped in the courtyard of Nanchuan City Police Station. Ji Ying had Lin Shaohui’s group separated for individual interrogations.
She took Lin Shaohui’s homeroom teacher to the office where Zhou Yining waited.
“We’ve brought back the suspects. My colleagues will interrogate them separately. We’ll notify their parents afterward. We should notify your parents too, but is that convenient?” Ji Ying asked.
Recalling Zhou Yining’s family situation, Ji Ying thought her parents might not care or might blame Zhou Yining if they came to the station.
“Officer, my family situation is special. Can you not notify my parents for now?” Zhou Yining said calmly.
“Do you have other relatives? Or a sister, friends, or someone?” Ji Ying asked.
Zhou Yining shook her head. “Would my homeroom teacher work? I really don’t know who else to call,” she said.
Zhou Yining’s expression was forlorn. She didn’t want the Zhou family involved. Those clueless people would only make things worse.
“That’s fine. Give me your homeroom teacher’s phone number,” Ji Ying said.
“Okay, 189…” Zhou Yining recited a string of numbers.
Ji Ying dialed Chen Yitong’s number. “Hello, are you Zhou Yining’s homeroom teacher?” she asked.
“Yes, that’s me. Who is this?” Chen Yitong was supervising a self-study session and stepped into the hallway to take the call.
“Here’s the situation: Zhou Yining from your class was bullied at school. She’s reported it to the police and is at the station. We’ve arrested the bullies. We need you to come here to help us understand the situation,” Ji Ying said.
She thought for a moment and added, “Zhou Yining’s family situation is special. If possible, please don’t inform her parents about this yet.”
“Okay, officer, I understand. I’ll come now,” Chen Yitong said. She quickly called the math teacher, asking them to cover her self-study supervision, as she needed to rush to the police station.
Teacher Zhang hadn’t left yet. She was on the fourth-floor hallway when she saw Chen Yitong standing there, looking flustered.
“What’s wrong? I heard something happened at school? Some students were taken away?” Teacher Zhang asked.
“Yes, it’s Zhou Yining from my class. I need to go to the police station now,” Chen Yitong said.
“Alright, don’t rush. Drive safely. Don’t worry about the evening self-study. Go find out what’s going on,” Teacher Zhang said.
“Okay, I’m off,” Chen Yitong said, grabbing her car keys and hurrying out.
