Chapter 40: Did My Little Sister Turn Gay? …
Jiang Yueyi felt somewhat worried about her little sister, so she followed her upstairs. Although she knew eavesdropping was wrong, she was afraid something might happen to her little sister, so she simply stood at Jiang Xianzhi’s door, leaning there to listen to the sounds inside.
Inside the room, Zhou Yining took a few steps forward and reached to pull a few tissues from the box on the bedside table.
Zhou Yining approached the bed, propped one hand on it, and tried to wipe Jiang Xianzhi’s tears with the other, but Jiang Xianzhi sniffled and dodged.
“Don’t bother, just leave,” Jiang Xianzhi said.
Zhou Yining looked at Jiang Xianzhi, whose eyes were red from crying, and felt heartbroken. If she had known it would turn out like this, she would have asked Jiang Xianzhi for help instead.
“Your eyes are all swollen from crying. Let me wipe them for you,” Zhou Yining said gently. She bent down, cautiously leaned closer, and used her right hand to wipe Jiang Xianzhi’s tears with the tissue.
Jiang Xianzhi turned her head to dodge again, but her body didn’t move.
Zhou Yining reached out once more, and this time Jiang Xianzhi didn’t dodge. Zhou Yining carefully wiped her tears and said, “Don’t be mad, okay? I brought a cake. Let’s celebrate your birthday later.”
The gentler Zhou Yining’s tone was, the more aggrieved Jiang Xianzhi felt, and her tears fell even more.
Zhou Yining hurriedly bent down and pulled Jiang Xianzhi into her arms. She held Jiang Xianzhi’s lower back with one hand and wiped her tears with the other, saying, “Don’t cry. I was wrong. My Zhizhi, don’t be angry, okay?”
Jiang Xianzhi sniffled, hooked her hands around Zhou Yining’s neck, and buried herself in Zhou Yining’s arms. “It’s all your fault. Are you this nice to other girls too?”
“No way! I’m only like this with you,” Zhou Yining said, gently patting Jiang Xianzhi’s lower back to comfort her.
Jiang Xianzhi rubbed her tears on Zhou Yining’s shoulder, looked up at her, and retorted, “You just like pretty girls. You think Zhong Yumeng is prettier than me and prefer spending time with her, don’t you?”
Zhou Yining’s head spun, and she quickly soothed, “No, I only like spending time with you. Didn’t I explain yesterday? I asked her for help.”
“Then why didn’t you ask me? Isn’t my family rich enough? Why did you go to someone else?” Jiang Xianzhi said, sniffling and crying again.
Zhou Yining quickly comforted her, “Didn’t I explain yesterday? I didn’t want to mix other things into our friendship. But if I had known you’d be this upset, I would’ve asked you for help from the start.”
Jiang Xianzhi rubbed against Zhou Yining’s shoulder again, her arms around Zhou Yining’s neck tightening. She sniffled and asked, “So, do you think she’s prettier or me? Do you like her or me?”
Zhou Yining’s lips curved into a smile. This little fox was really jealous. She quickly followed Jiang Xianzhi’s lead and said, “Of course, you’re prettier. I only like you. Satisfied now?”
“That’s more like it,” Jiang Xianzhi said, rubbing against Zhou Yining’s shoulder again. The sobbing in her voice was less noticeable, clearly showing Zhou Yining had cheered her up.
“Hmm, so our Miss Zhizhi isn’t mad anymore, right? Let’s go eat cake,” Zhou Yining said, gently patting Jiang Xianzhi’s lower back to signal her to let go.
Jiang Xianzhi rubbed against Zhou Yining again, her arms still not letting go. “Stingy, you won’t even let me hug you.”
Zhou Yining laughed, softened by her words, and said, “Fine, hug as long as you want. But can we change positions? This one’s hard on my back.”
Zhou Yining was still bending over, and her back was starting to ache.
Jiang Xianzhi looked up at Zhou Yining’s position and slightly loosened her grip. She pulled Zhou Yining and pointed to the spot beside her. “Then sit here.”
Zhou Yining’s lips curved, and she obediently sat next to Jiang Xianzhi. She reached to hold Jiang Xianzhi’s lower back, pulling her into her arms, and gently coaxed, “You can hug as long as you want this time. Satisfied?”
“Hmm,” Jiang Xianzhi replied, burying her face in Zhou Yining’s shoulder and rubbing gently. Zhou Yining didn’t wear perfume, but Jiang Xianzhi loved the scent on her.
Zhou Yining looked at the little fox in her arms, her heart softening. “Have you not eaten properly these past two days?”
“Who made me mad? It’s all because of you,” Jiang Xianzhi said, her voice softer than before, clearly acting spoiled with Zhou Yining.
Zhou Yining quickly coaxed, “Okay, I won’t dare do it again. If anything comes up in the future, I’ll come to you first, alright?”
“That’s more like it,” Jiang Xianzhi replied proudly, then continued to lean softly in Zhou Yining’s arms, not wanting to get up.
While the two talked, Jiang Yueyi listened to their conversation from outside the door. Her brows furrowed tightly. Was this really how best friends talked?
Why did it feel like her little sister and Zhou Yining were acting like a couple? And her little sister’s reason for being upset was clearly jealousy over Zhou Yining.
Jiang Yueyi rubbed her temples. Her little sister was too easy to appease. Zhou Yining just hugged her and spoke gently for a bit, and she wasn’t mad anymore?
Jiang Yueyi took a few deep breaths, suddenly not wanting to listen anymore. Her little sister had been sulking at home for two days, but Zhou Yining came and cheered her up in less than twenty minutes. Was her little sister really that easy to coax?
Jiang Yueyi didn’t want to listen but couldn’t help being curious about how low her little sister’s standards could go, so she stayed there and didn’t leave.
“Have you eaten dinner?” Zhou Yining asked softly.
Jiang Xianzhi shook her head, her fox-like eyes looking at Zhou Yining pitifully. “No appetite. What about you?”
“I ate a bowl of instant noodles, but I’m a bit hungry now. How about we eat cake? We can talk while eating,” Zhou Yining coaxed gently.
“Hmm,” Jiang Xianzhi replied, her hands still holding Zhou Yining’s lower back, unwilling to let go.
Zhou Yining laughed and patted Jiang Xianzhi’s back. “Let go first. How can we eat cake if you don’t?”
“I don’t want to let go,” Jiang Xianzhi said, nuzzling into Zhou Yining’s neck.
Zhou Yining looked at the spoiled little fox in her arms, helpless, and teased, “If you don’t let go, I’ll carry you over.”
Jiang Xianzhi’s ears turned red, and she buried her face in Zhou Yining’s shoulder, letting out a soft “Hmm.”
Zhou Yining was just joking, not expecting Jiang Xianzhi to actually want her to carry her.
“You’re saying that, so I’ll really carry you?” Zhou Yining asked again.
Jiang Xianzhi didn’t speak, but her arms around Zhou Yining’s lower back tightened.
Zhou Yining looked helplessly at Jiang Xianzhi, noticing her bright red ear tips. Jiang Xianzhi was completely buried in her arms, clinging tightly.
Since she made her mad, Zhou Yining accepted her fate. She held Jiang Xianzhi’s lower back with one hand and hooked her legs with the other, cautioning, “Hold my neck with both hands, or you might fall.”
“Hmm,” Jiang Xianzhi replied, her ears even redder. She was 17, yet she still let her friend carry her like this. Would Zhou Yining think she was too clingy? But she really wanted Zhou Yining to hold her.
Jiang Xianzhi obediently reached out, hooked Zhou Yining’s neck, and kept her face buried in Zhou Yining’s arms.
Zhou Yining exerted strength and actually lifted Jiang Xianzhi horizontally. She carried her toward the table and chairs in the room, setting her down on a chair.
“Okay, let go for a bit. I’ll put the candles in,” Zhou Yining said softly.
Jiang Xianzhi reluctantly let go, her red eyes looking at Zhou Yining, obediently sitting and waiting.
Zhou Yining took out a fiery red fox-shaped cake and inserted the birthday candles. She smiled at Jiang Xianzhi. “Does this little fox look like you?”
Jiang Xianzhi nodded. The fiery red fox looked adorable, and if Zhou Yining thought she was a little fox, then she was.
“Good, I’ll light the candles now?”
“Hmm,” Jiang Xianzhi nodded, her eyes curving as she watched Zhou Yining bustle about for her. She loved when Zhou Yining pampered her.
Zhou Yining took a lighter from the bag, lit the candles, and turned off the light.
She sang the birthday song while walking toward Jiang Xianzhi. “Happy birthday to you…”
After singing, Zhou Yining said, “Little birthday star, make a wish. Then we can blow out the candles.”
Jiang Xianzhi’s eyes sparkled as she looked at Zhou Yining, then clasped her hands, making a wish with unprecedented sincerity.
She made three wishes: first, she hoped her family would stay safe and sound; second, she hoped Zhou Yining would have smooth sailing and avoid bad things; third, she hoped Zhou Yining would spend every birthday with her in the future.
After making her wishes, Jiang Xianzhi looked at Zhou Yining with bright eyes.
Zhou Yining smiled at her. “Blow out the candles!”
Zhou Yining started blowing, and Jiang Xianzhi hurriedly joined in. In the end, Zhou Yining blew out most of the candles.
Zhou Yining laughed, used her phone for light, and turned the room’s lights back on.
Jiang Xianzhi pouted slightly, then gave Zhou Yining a sly smile. “You blew out all my candles. You owe me.”
Zhou Yining laughed, looking at her. “Fine, your call. How do I make it up to you?”
Jiang Xianzhi’s ears turned slightly red, and she looked away from Zhou Yining. “Well, you’re not allowed to leave tonight. Stay and keep me company.”
Zhou Yining hadn’t expected this request but nodded. “Okay, I’ll do as you say.”
Although Zhou Yining knew her family might throw a fit if she didn’t go home, she didn’t care. That home wasn’t important to her anyway.
“That’s more like it,” Jiang Xianzhi said, proudly tilting her swan-like neck.
Zhou Yining carefully removed the candles from the cake and handed the knife over. “You cut the first piece.”
Jiang Xianzhi looked at the fiery red fox, reluctant to cut it since Zhou Yining bought it for her.
Zhou Yining smiled at her. “Cut it. I’ll buy you a different one next time.”
“Hmm,” Jiang Xianzhi replied, reassured that Zhou Yining would buy another, and cut the first piece.
Zhou Yining took the knife from Jiang Xianzhi’s hand. “I’ll handle the rest.”
Zhou Yining cut a piece of cake for Jiang Xianzhi, placed a fork on it, and set the plate in front of her. “Eat.”
Zhou Yining cut herself a piece too. After a busy evening, she was really hungry and devoured the fox’s head in seconds.
Jiang Xianzhi started eating too, the heavy weight in her heart lifting. She was hungry and began eating the cake in big bites.
Outside the door, Jiang Yueyi’s expression was odd. She heard them start eating the cake, and her little sister was already cheered up. She felt there was no need to stay, but was this how normal friends comforted each other?
Was her little sister always this clingy? Letting a friend carry her like that—how did it sound like something couples in love would do? Thinking about her sister’s attitude toward Zhang Ye tonight, Jiang Yueyi felt things were bad. Could her little sister have turned gay?
At this thought, Jiang Yueyi’s mind crashed. She quickly shook her head, thinking her sister probably hadn’t, since she liked Zhang Ye before, so her orientation should be fine.
Jiang Yueyi’s mind was a mess as she went downstairs. Liang Jing and Jiang Shengde were still in the living room. Seeing her come down, Liang Jing quickly asked, “How’s it going?”
Jiang Yueyi met her parents’ concerned gazes and replied, “It’s fine now. Zhou Yining cheered her up. They’re eating birthday cake in the room.”
Liang Jing met Jiang Shengde’s gaze, and they smiled at each other.
Liang Jing sighed in relief. “Good, good. I said it, didn’t I? A little fight between girls, a bit of coaxing, and it’s fine.”
Jiang Yueyi looked at her mother, hesitating. “Mom, do you think my little sister…”
“What about your sister? Speak up, don’t stop halfway,” Liang Jing said with a laugh.
“Mom, do you think my little sister might have turned gay?” Jiang Yueyi asked.
Liang Jing burst out laughing. “Yueyi, your imagination is getting wilder. Your sister liked Zhang Ye before. How could she be gay? Besides, her fight with Zhou Yining is just possessiveness between girls. When I’m mad at my best friend, don’t I wait for her to apologize first too? You’re overthinking.”
Jiang Yueyi forced a smile and mumbled, “But you wouldn’t let your best friend princess-carry you, right?”
Liang Jing laughed again. “Of course not, but your sister is still young, still a kid. Kids like to act spoiled with each other. A hug isn’t a big deal. Look at you, making a fuss.”
“Yeah, don’t you girls love clinging and hugging? That’s normal,” Jiang Shengde chimed in with a smile, relieved his daughter was happy.
Jiang Yueyi pursed her lips. “Fine, if you both say so, maybe I’m overthinking. They’re just kids, alright.”
“Good, your sister’s not mad anymore, so we can relax. It’s almost ten o’clock. Is her little friend going home tonight?” Liang Jing asked.
“Probably not. She said she’s staying to keep Zhizhi company,” Jiang Yueyi replied.
“That’s great. Let her keep Zhizhi company so we don’t have to. Alright, let’s all rest.”
“Hmm, I’m going to my room,” Jiang Yueyi said.
Although her parents thought she was overthinking, Jiang Yueyi still felt something was off between her sister and Zhou Yining. Their way of interacting and tone of voice were just wrong. But she couldn’t do anything about it. Getting her crybaby sister cheered up was already hard enough.
