Chapter 46: A Woman’s Mouth, a Deceiving Ghost
Zhou Yining finished dinner and returned home; it was already almost nine o’clock at night. When she arrived, all three members of the Zhou family were present.
Zhou Yuanfei and Zhou Jiaming watched a soccer match, while Zhao Xiuna sat beside them, accompanying them.
Seeing Zhou Yining return, Zhou Yuanfei furrowed his brow tightly. “Where did you go again? A girl like you, always going out to fool around—what does that look like?”
“Hah, what should I do if I don’t go out? Stay home and look at your face?” Zhou Yining replied carelessly.
“You, Zhou Yining, you’re getting more and more disrespectful!” Zhou Yuanfei said angrily.
“Indeed, having a father like you is no different from having none. After all, when I was bullied at school, you still blamed me for it. What use is a cowardly dad like you?” Zhou Yining said disdainfully.
“So, how was that matter resolved in the end?”
“Don’t think about that ten thousand yuan. I said reconciliation is impossible, and now the situation is even more complicated. One of the girls jumped off a building a few days ago. Lin Shaohui and the others will only face harsher punishment. Also, you’d better not meddle, or are you prepared to pay my twenty thousand yuan lawyer fees?” Zhou Yining said sarcastically.
“I don’t have money. Don’t come to me for money. Zhou Yining, aren’t you so great? I’m telling you, I definitely won’t pay your lawyer fees!” Zhou Yuanfei said furiously.
Zhou Yining glanced at him with pursed lips, her eyes full of disdain, as if looking at trash.
Zhao Xiuna, meanwhile, seemed anxious. “Yining, what should we do? The family really doesn’t have extra money to pay your lawyer fees. What can we do?”
“I’ll owe it then. I already wrote an IOU to Teacher Chen. Stay out of my business from now on. If you want to get involved, pay off my debts first,” Zhou Yining said, too lazy to deal with the three of them. She returned to her small dining room.
She grabbed her clothes and took a shower. When she came out, it was nearly ten o’clock at night. Zhou Yining felt very tired, dried her hair, and went to bed to rest.
Sure enough, as soon as she mentioned paying her debts, the Zhou family members all quieted down.
The next week, everyone entered a sprint mode for the final exams. Zhou Yining had a very busy week. By the end of July, everyone finally faced the final exams.
The teacher arranged for students to set up their seats the night before to prepare for the next day’s exams.
While Xu Yueming moved desks, he heard Zhou Yining’s voice beside him.
“Don’t forget our bet. Whoever ranks higher in the final exams pays the other five hundred yuan,” Zhou Yining said loudly, and many in the class heard her.
Xu Yueming felt like he was being roasted over a fire. He gritted his teeth and said, “You still remember that?”
“Of course I remember. People must keep their word, or what’s the difference between words and farts? What’s wrong? Are you chickening out?” Zhou Yining asked.
“Who’s chickening out? A bet’s a bet. Don’t regret it,” Xu Yueming said stubbornly, though he felt pained about his pocket money.
Zhou Yining clapped for him. “Not bad, huh? Your mouth is the toughest part of you. I hope you’re just as tough when it’s time to pay up.”
“Damn it!” Xu Yueming was almost furious. That bet was made when Zhou Yining had just started changing. If it were now, he definitely wouldn’t bet with her, okay? After all, Zhou Yining’s grades were obvious to everyone.
Many classmates sided with Zhou Yining. After all, accepting favors made them feel indebted, and listening to her explanations made them feel grateful.
“Xu Yueming, don’t deny it if you lose. We’re all keeping track for you.”
“Yeah, let’s see if you dare mess with Sister Zhou again.”
Xu Yueming just wanted to cry. He didn’t even want to mess with Zhou Yining now, okay?
The next morning, Zhou Yining ate breakfast at home and went to take the exam. In the last monthly exam, she scored zero in English, so her grades weren’t in the top tier. However, her scores in other subjects were so outstanding—almost perfect—that she still achieved over five hundred points, ranking in the upper-middle of the grade.
Her exam room was Exam Room 6. Zhou Yining entered, found her seat number, and sat down quietly. The first exam in the morning was Chinese. She waited for the teacher to distribute the test papers.
The proctors soon entered the classroom. Two teachers showed the students the sealed test packet to ensure it was unopened, then used a small knife to cut it open and began distributing the test papers and answer sheets.
When the test paper was handed out, Zhou Yining first flipped to the back to check the essay topic. The essay provided a passage about traditional Chinese culture, requiring students to write an essay on traditional culture from a self-chosen perspective.
Zhou Yining looked at the essay topic and then began answering the earlier questions. Her Chinese grades were excellent. In her previous life, she had written novels, so her expression and logical thinking skills were strong. Plus, Zhou Yining’s handwriting was beautiful, so even the proctor couldn’t help but glance at her a few times when passing by.
Zhou Yining answered questions quickly, grasping key points from multiple angles in reading comprehension. With nearly twenty minutes left, she had already finished her paper.
After the exam, students could go home early to rest and return at 2:30 p.m. for the math exam.
When Zhou Yining arrived at the exam room in the afternoon, the students lacked energy. Math was the most mentally taxing subject among all the courses.
When the test papers were distributed, some students looked at the last few big questions and started gasping in shock.
Zhou Yining also glanced at the big questions. The last two parts of the final two questions were indeed a bit beyond the syllabus, resembling math competition problems.
Zhou Yining returned to the first page and started with the multiple-choice questions. With the paper’s difficulty increased, she had to secure full marks on the basic questions.
Zhou Yining checked off answers one by one. For some multiple-choice questions, she could find the answer just by looking. Only for the more complex ones did she use a pen.
She worked quickly and soon reached the big questions. The earlier ones were no problem, but her speed slowed at the second-to-last big question.
It wasn’t that she couldn’t solve it, but the question was tricky. Zhou Yining solved it one way, then used another method to verify the answer backward, ensuring she was correct before moving to the last question.
The final big question tested multiple perspectives and was much harder than the previous ones, especially on this paper.
Even Zhou Yining spent twenty minutes on the last part before solving it.
After filling out the answer sheet, only fifteen minutes of exam time remained.
Zhou Yining checked her work again to ensure no mistakes, then raised her hand to submit her paper.
The proctor came to collect her paper. Zhou Yining packed her things and left the exam room.
As soon as she moved, many in the exam room noticed her. Some felt Zhou Yining was inhuman—submitting twenty minutes early on such a difficult paper. How were the rest of them supposed to survive?
After submitting her paper, Zhou Yining went to the restroom, then strolled to the playground. She actually thought this final exam was quite difficult. When the math scores came out, it might humble a lot of people.
After walking for a while, other students gradually came out. Although the exam was over, evening self-study still had to continue as usual, so everyone returned to their classrooms to rearrange desks. The next morning, they would restore the seats to the exam room setup.
When Zhou Yining returned to class, someone had already arranged her desk for her. Some classmates moved desks, others discussed math problems, and the classroom was chaotic.
Zhou Yining sat down, took out a pack of snacks a classmate had given her, and started eating. Soon, Yu Yang and a few others crowded around her.
“Sister Zhou, do you remember your math answers? Can you check our answers?” Yu Yang asked, holding a draft notebook.
Zhou Yining nodded. “Hmm, I roughly remember them. Let me see your answers.”
“Here.” Yu Yang felt excited but also scared. Thinking of the difficulty of this exam, she figured it was better to face the truth sooner.
Zhou Yining took a pencil and started marking Yu Yang’s answers. “The multiple-choice questions were tough this time, but you did pretty well. You only got two wrong.”
Zhou Yining wrote down the correct answers and then checked the other questions. The further she went, the worse Yu Yang’s expression became.
“I’m done for. I definitely won’t even get 130 in math this time,” Yu Yang said, seeing that her answers for the last two big questions were completely different from Zhou Yining’s.
Some classmates took Yu Yang’s draft notebook to compare answers, and soon wails of despair echoed through the room.
Jiang Hao, because of previous incidents, felt embarrassed to approach Zhou Yining. But he couldn’t hold back. This exam was too tough, and even as the math class representative, he wasn’t confident about the last two big questions.
Jiang Hao gritted his teeth and, following Yu Yang’s example, said politely, “Sister Zhou, can you check which questions I got wrong?”
Zhou Yining held up a snack bag and pointed at it. “Where’s your offering?”
Jiang Hao looked at Zhou Yining in shock, then at Yu Yang. “Why didn’t you ask her for anything?”
Zhou Yining laughed. “Nonsense, this whole bag is her advance offering. No snacks, no talk.”
“Give me five minutes. I’ll be right back,” Jiang Hao said, grabbing money and rushing out to buy snacks from the store as an offering.
Zhou Yining didn’t stay idle. Several girls surrounded her, and she patiently explained questions to them.
Meanwhile, in Class 1, Jiang Xianzhi felt a headache from the afternoon’s math exam. She already struggled to pass, and with the increased difficulty of this paper, she didn’t dare think about her math score.
Jiang Xianzhi wanted to find Zhou Yining to whine, complain about how hard the math paper was, and have Zhou Yining comfort her.
So she went up to the fourth floor to Class 19 to find Zhou Yining.
But when she stood at the door of Class 19, she saw Zhou Yining surrounded by several girls. The girls called her “Sister Zhou” one after another. Zhou Yining, with a smile on her lips, explained questions to them, occasionally joking with the girls, looking quite happy.
Jiang Xianzhi tightly pursed her lips. She suddenly felt her back teeth itch. Was this what Zhou Yining meant by explaining questions only for snacks? Why did it feel like Zhou Yining was enjoying it so much?
“Classmate, are you here to find someone?” a girl about to leave the classroom asked, seeing Jiang Xianzhi at the door.
Jiang Xianzhi withdrew her gaze. “Thanks, but no need. She’s probably too busy for me.”
Saying that, Jiang Xianzhi pursed her lips and quickly left. A woman’s mouth, a deceiving ghost—she knew Zhou Yining just liked hanging out with pretty girls.
