Chapter 55: Mother, Do You Have Something to Discuss With Me?
Since it was already 11 o’clock, Zhou Yining and Jiang Xianzhi finished bathing and went to bed past midnight.
Fortunately, both slept the entire afternoon, so going to bed now wasn’t too late.
On the other hand, Jiang Yueyi couldn’t sleep at all; her mind was full of thoughts about her little sister being bent, and what made it more distressing was that she alone knew this, unable to find anyone to confide in at midnight, which made her feel even more stifled.
To this, Zhou Yining and Jiang Xianzhi, who were already asleep, were completely unaware.
Because they slept late, Zhou Yining and Jiang Xianzhi still hadn’t gotten up by seven in the morning; Jiang Xianzhi’s bed was big and soft, and lying on it felt like sinking into a marshmallow, making it impossible to open their eyes.
Meanwhile, Jiang Yueyi came out with big dark circles under her eyes; before heading to the company later, she needed to cover them with concealer.
Liang Jing was eating breakfast and saw her eldest daughter with dark circles, clearly not having slept well; she smiled and asked, “What’s wrong with you? Didn’t you sleep well last night?”
Jiang Yueyi looked around to make sure no one was there, then sat next to Liang Jing and whispered, “Mother, something’s wrong; Zhizhi and Zhou Yining seem off.”
“Weren’t they both in the room last night? What’s off about them?” Liang Jing asked.
“I went to get water last night and saw Zhou Yining carrying Zhizhi back to the room, in a princess carry; is that something ordinary friends would do?” Jiang Yueyi finally spoke her mind.
“What? Did you see it wrong?” Liang Jing asked.
“No way I saw it wrong; it’s absolutely true; I saw it with my own eyes when I went to get water!” Jiang Yueyi hurriedly said.
Liang Jing slightly furrowed her brows, “That does seem a bit off; is your little sister bent?”
“I don’t know; should we find a chance to ask her?” Jiang Yueyi was also puzzled.
“How do we ask? If they don’t have that intention, asking them directly might just break the window paper for them,” Liang Jing thought they couldn’t ask Jiang Xianzhi outright.
“Then what do we do?” Jiang Yueyi sighed and asked.
“Just pretend we don’t know for now; I’ll find a chance to test Zhizhi; anyway, they probably haven’t progressed much; you only saw them hugging, not kissing,” Liang Jing comforted herself to relax, thinking her daughter probably wasn’t a lesbian.
Jiang Yueyi thought to herself that she didn’t see her little sister kissing, but the problem was, wouldn’t people kiss in their room? Would they let her see?
But Jiang Yueyi didn’t say it; like her mother, she held onto a sliver of hope.
While they were talking, Zhou Yining led a groggy Jiang Xianzhi downstairs.
Zhou Yining cheerfully greeted them, “Good morning, Auntie, Sister Jiang.”
Liang Jing casually forced a smile, “Good morning.”
Jiang Yueyi glanced at them a few times, her eyes falling on their clasped hands; great, holding hands first thing in the morning, and it was the interlocking kind; her little sister, looking half-asleep, leaned against Zhou Yining’s shoulder.
“Good morning,” Jiang Yueyi politely replied, then reminded, “Zhizhi, wake up; Little Zhou is a guest; how can you let a guest take care of you?”
“It’s fine; she wants to take care of me,” Jiang Xianzhi arrogantly tilted her head; seeing Zhou Yining smile at her, she reluctantly put a little distance between them.
“Sit down quick; breakfast is ready; see what you want to eat?” Liang Jing quickly changed the topic and asked.
“I’m fine with anything,” Zhou Yining politely smiled.
“I want the same as you,” Jiang Xianzhi smiled at Zhou Yining and said.
Jiang Yueyi, watching from the side, felt her teeth ache; seriously, even breakfast had to be the same? Now, the more she looked at her little sister and Zhou Yining, the more something seemed off.
After breakfast, Zhou Yining looked at Jiang Xianzhi, “Let’s go, Zhizhi; time to study.”
“Study again?” Jiang Xianzhi wanted to cry; what kind of miserable life was this? Yesterday, the first day of the holiday, she was forced to do two test papers in the morning and studied until past 11 at night.
“Of course; you’ll keep doing papers today; you can rest in the afternoon, and I’ll explain problems to you tonight,” Zhou Yining said matter-of-factly.
“Is this really a holiday? How is it more tiring than school?” Jiang Xianzhi pitifully looked at Zhou Yining, hoping for a day off, but how could a study maniac like her give a break?
“Keep at it; the sea of learning is boundless, and hardship is the boat; there’s still a year left; after graduation, I definitely won’t make you study like this,” Zhou Yining smiled and encouraged.
Jiang Xianzhi sniffled, ignoring Zhou Yining.
Seeing the little fox throw a tantrum, Zhou Yining wasn’t annoyed; her smile grew brighter; she looked at Liang Jing and Jiang Yueyi, “Auntie, Sister Jiang, it’s about time; we’re going upstairs to study, or Zhizhi won’t finish two sets of papers this morning.”
“Oh, okay, go ahead then,” Liang Jing gave Zhou Yining a polite smile.
Zhou Yining reached for Jiang Xianzhi’s wrist; Jiang Xianzhi tried to resist a bit but was pulled up by Zhou Yining and reluctantly went upstairs to study.
After they went upstairs, Liang Jing spoke, “Doesn’t this seem normal? Little Zhou is helping Zhizhi study; look at Zhizhi, she doesn’t even want to go.”
“Mother, studying is studying; does that mean they can princess-carry afterward?”
“True; I’ll find a chance to ask Zhizhi tonight,” Liang Jing sighed and said.
Meanwhile, Jiang Xianzhi was dragged to the study; Zhou Yining had her keep doing papers; the papers were summer homework anyway, and doing them consolidated knowledge while completing assignments—pure joy.
Jiang Xianzhi looked at Zhou Yining; seeing Zhou Yining’s eyes light up at the papers, Jiang Xianzhi pouted, her mind full of confusion; seriously, did someone actually love studying this much? She cried.
The young lady who didn’t want to study finally sat down obediently and started on the papers; soon, the desk was piled with scratch paper again.
It wasn’t until mealtime that Zhou Yining mercifully let the young lady go.
The exhausted young lady didn’t even have the energy to act spoiled; after changing into a nightgown at noon, she obediently went to bed.
Zhou Yining found the young lady in her arms amusing, her eyes crinkling; was doing two math papers in the morning that dramatic? She did four sets herself and felt relaxed.
Zhou Yining showed a top student’s confusion, gently patting the little fox in her arms to comfort her.
Due to mental exhaustion, Jiang Xianzhi slept a long time again, waking up at four; but to avoid being dragged to study, she decided to stay in bed.
Jiang Xianzhi nestled in Zhou Yining’s arms, reached for her phone, and started playing on it while curled up in Zhou Yining’s embrace.
Zhou Yining was woken by the movement; she rubbed her eyes, planning to get up for a glass of water, but before she could, Jiang Xianzhi hugged her, “Where are you going?”
“To get water; I’ll get you a glass too.”
“Then go; you scared me; I thought you were making me study again.”
Zhou Yining laughed, “You can rest this afternoon; we’ll study again tonight.”
Jiang Xianzhi hummed a few times, not feeling comforted at all.
At six, they went downstairs to eat; Liang Jing and Jiang Yueyi were back too; Liang Jing looked at her youngest daughter, “Zhizhi, come to my room for a bit.”
“What for, Mother?” Jiang Xianzhi didn’t want to move but followed Liang Jing’s steps anyway.
Zhou Yining sat at the dining table waiting; after all, a mother-daughter private talk had nothing to do with her.
She took out her phone to fiddle with and found herself added to a big group for a summer training camp, with three students from Nanchuan City No. 1 High School, students from other schools, and the leading teacher.
The teacher sent the meeting address for three days later and the bus license plate number to everyone, so students wouldn’t miss it.
Just as Zhou Yining was about to close WeChat, she got a friend request; she checked the profile picture and rejected it outright.
A few minutes later, the person requested again, adding a note.
[I’m Zhang Ye; hurry up and accept my friend request.]
Zhou Yining didn’t accept and replied with two words.
[Crazy.]
Zhang Ye didn’t expect Zhou Yining to reject him; he was furious at home; he and Zhong Yumeng had asked for Zhou Yining’s contact before, but Zhong Yumeng wouldn’t tell him; this time, since they were in the same group, Zhang Ye just added her.
His final exam score was 705, but math was only 134, while Zhou Yining got a perfect math score; he really wanted to know where Zhou Yining studied math, but not only did she not add him, she insulted him?
Zhang Ye was almost livid, but thinking he’d see Zhou Yining in a few days, his mood improved; he’d catch her then and wasn’t afraid he wouldn’t get answers.
Meanwhile, Jiang Xianzhi was called into her mother’s room; she asked curiously, “Mother, do you have something to discuss with me?”
Liang Jing smiled at her, “It’s not a big deal; just, you and Little Zhou seem pretty close?”
Jiang Xianzhi nodded; wasn’t that obvious?
“Yeah, I like her a lot; she’s different from Shi Yuanyuan and Si Yaqing,” Jiang Xianzhi said, her eyes crinkling as she talked about Zhou Yining.
Liang Jing’s heart skipped, “How’s she different?”
“I can’t quite say; I just like being with her; if only she didn’t love studying so much,” Jiang Xianzhi grumbled about being forced to study for two days straight.
“So, you two are best friends, right?” Liang Jing deliberately guided.
“Best friends? Not exactly, I guess; I can’t say; what’s up, Mother? Why are you suddenly so curious about me and Zhou Zhou?” Jiang Xianzhi wondered.
“Nothing, just asking casually; I was just surprised you suddenly don’t like Zhang Ye anymore,” Liang Jing said, observing her daughter’s expression.
“I didn’t realize how annoying he was before; like Zhou Zhou said, he’s the epitome of average and overconfident; how did I ever like someone like that? I don’t get it,” Jiang Xianzhi said with clear disdain.
Liang Jing sighed; though she didn’t get clear answers, she observed her daughter’s expression and felt Jiang Xianzhi and Zhou Yining probably weren’t romantic; her Zhizhi seemed clueless about such things, so she felt relieved.
“Alright, let me change, and we’ll go eat,” Liang Jing confirmed her daughter wasn’t a lesbian for now, felt relieved, and went to change.
While changing, she said, “You two are studying tonight too? That’s so hardworking.”
“Hmm, she’s going to go over my wrong answers from today,” Jiang Xianzhi said, wanting to cry again at the thought.
