Chapter 56: She’s Just an Ungrateful White-Eyed Wolf…
“Alright, Little Zhou meant well. Let’s go. I changed, so let’s go downstairs and eat first,” Liang Jing said. She went downstairs with Jiang Xianzhi.
After dinner, the young miss was dragged away by Zhou Yining again. This happened for several days. On the fourth afternoon, Zhou Yining prepared to leave. She needed to go home to pack her luggage. Also, tomorrow she promised Zhong Yumeng to tutor her for a day.
Jiang Xianzhi looked at Zhou Yining. She felt reluctant but also relieved. These four days, she either did math problems or listened to Zhou Yining explain math problems. Thanks to Zhou Yining, Jiang Xianzhi finished more than half of her math holiday homework.
“You’re leaving already?” Jiang Xianzhi held Zhou Yining’s wrist, shook it, and asked.
Zhou Yining smiled at her. “Hmm, tomorrow I promised to go explain problems to Zhong Yumeng. Also, the day after, I go to training. I’m leaving, so you can rest well for a few days. But remember to finish the remaining math workbook. When I return from training, I’ll find time to explain problems to you.”
“Fine.” Jiang Xianzhi pouted at Zhou Yining, looking aggrieved. As expected of Zhou Yining, even when leaving, she still urged her to study.
“Alright, I’m going now, or it’ll get dark soon.”
“I’ll have the driver take you,” Jiang Xianzhi said.
“No need. I just ate, so I’ll walk to digest. I’ll take a taxi outside the neighborhood.”
“That works. Don’t forget to message me when you’re not busy.” Jiang Xianzhi shook her phone. These days were tiring, but thinking about not seeing Zhou Yining for a week made her feel uneasy.
“Okay, I got it. Rest well. I’m off.” Zhou Yining rubbed Jiang Xianzhi’s hair. Then she left the villa.
She walked to the neighborhood’s entrance and took a taxi back to her original home.
When Zhou Yining reached the door of 501 upstairs, she heard laughter inside. If it were the original her, she’d probably feel sad. Without her, the family seemed happier.
Of course, this didn’t matter to Zhou Yining. She opened the door with her key casually. Then she saw three people in the living room. Their smiles froze.
Zhao Xiuna broke the silence first. “Yining, you’re back? How was it at your classmate’s these past few days?”
“It was fine. I’m leaving the day after tomorrow, so I came back to pack,” Zhou Yining said. Since the other didn’t provoke her, she spoke politely.
“Oh, right, you’re going to training the day after tomorrow. I was just telling your dad, this is a rare opportunity. You must seize it. By the way, let your dad drive you there tomorrow morning,” Zhao Xiuna said, smiling.
“No need. I’ll take a taxi.” Zhou Yining didn’t want to deal with someone like Zhou Yuanfei.
“Yining, we’re family. It’s inconvenient to carry luggage in the morning. I’ll drive you,” Zhou Yuanfei said. His car wasn’t fancy, just a second-hand one he bought for 20,000.
“No, I don’t like troubling others.” Zhou Yining ignored Zhou Yuanfei’s darkening face and walked straight to the dining area.
She forgot to buy a suitcase. Zhou Yining planned to buy one tomorrow after tutoring Zhong Yumeng. For now, she’d organize her things.
Zhou Yining lifted the bedboard and grabbed a few sets of clothes. The original owner’s clothes were poor quality. She decided to buy some clothes along with the suitcase tomorrow.
In the living room, Zhou Yuanfei suppressed his anger. Zhao Xiuna comforted him. “Yining’s under a lot of pressure. Be understanding.”
“I know. I’m her dad, after all. Fine, if she wants to take a taxi, let her,” Zhou Yuanfei said, following Zhao Xiuna’s words.
Zhou Jiaming pouted, clearly unhappy with his parents’ attitude. “I told you before, she’s just an ungrateful white-eyed wolf. Why bother with her?”
“Jiaming, don’t talk about your sister like that,” Zhao Xiuna quickly scolded.
“Fine, I won’t. So annoying.” Zhou Jiaming stood and returned to his room.
Zhou Yining grabbed clothes and went to the bathroom to shower. Afterward, she messaged Zhong Yumeng on WeChat, reminding her to wait at home tomorrow.
Zhou Yining: [Remember to wait for me at home tomorrow.]
Zhong Yumeng: [Got it. I prepared my mistake notebook. I’m ready to grill you with questions, Teacher Little Zhou. Be ready tomorrow, you’ll be busy.]
Zhou Yining: [Is that so? Looking forward to it! (starry eyes jpg)]
She taught Jiang Xianzhi slightly advanced basics. But with Zhong Yumeng, it was different. She explained the toughest final two big questions, which were more challenging. Zhou Yining enjoyed solving hard problems.
The next morning, Zhou Yining woke up at seven. After getting ready, she prepared to leave.
Seeing her go, Zhao Xiuna asked, “Didn’t you just come back? Where are you off to now?”
“To a classmate’s house. I’ll be back tonight.”
“The same classmate as before?” Zhao Xiuna asked.
“No, another female classmate. I’m leaving now.” Zhou Yining didn’t eat breakfast at home. She ate soybean milk and fried dough sticks outside, then took a taxi to the villa district.
She arrived near eight. By the time she reached Zhong Yumeng’s house, it was past eight.
The maids at Zhong Yumeng’s house recognized her and led her straight to Zhong Yumeng’s study.
Zhong Yumeng was already waiting. Seeing Zhou Yining, she smiled. “Teacher Little Zhou, sit. This is for you.”
A thermos and two cups sat on the table.
“What’s that?” Zhou Yining asked curiously.
“Freshly made pear soup. Otherwise, your throat will give out after teaching all day,” Zhong Yumeng joked, smiling.
“Nice, as expected of you. Let’s start.” Zhou Yining suggested.
For two study maniacs, they dove right in. Zhou Yining took Zhong Yumeng’s mistake notebook and began explaining problems in order. Soon, their scratch paper filled with dense formulas.
They went from eight to ten. Zhou Yining, parched, stopped to drink some pear soup. They continued until 12:30, then went downstairs to eat.
After lunch, Zhong Yumeng had a fruit platter prepared. They rested in the dining room, eating fruit.
Soon, Zhang Ye’s voice came from outside. “Yumeng, Yumeng, are you there? Did you do the math test?”
His voice carried from afar. Zhou Yining’s brow furrowed slightly.
Zhong Yumeng mirrored her expression. She quickly explained, “Sorry, I didn’t know he’d show up.”
“It’s fine. Just send him away,” Zhou Yining said calmly.
“Yeah.” Zhong Yumeng muttered.
Zhang Ye reached the dining room. Seeing Zhou Yining, he thought he was hallucinating. “Wait, why are you here?”
“Why can’t I be? I came to see Zhong Yumeng. Got a problem?” Zhou Yining asked.
“No, I’m just curious. Since when are you two so close? Also, I added you on WeChat. Why didn’t you accept? You even scolded me.”
“Didn’t want to. We’re not close. I don’t add strangers on WeChat,” Zhou Yining said confidently.
“Stranger? You’re calling me a stranger? Who wrote me a love letter then?” Zhang Ye said, unconvinced.
“That was a lifetime ago. You’re still hung up on it? People move forward. Stop living in your fantasies,” Zhou Yining said dismissively.
“You, Zhou Yining, you’re so fickle.”
“Alright, did you come here just to argue?” Zhong Yumeng asked, annoyed.
“No, I did a test yesterday. The last big question was tough. I checked the answers but still didn’t get it. The tutor explained, but I didn’t understand. I came to discuss it with you,” Zhang Ye said. His family lived in the same villa district, so he’d come to Zhong Yumeng for tough problems.
“Not today. Zhou Yining and I have stuff to do later. No time to discuss. Come back in a few days,” Zhong Yumeng said, brushing off her childhood friend.
“No way. I’m going to training tomorrow. I won’t be back for a week,” Zhang Ye said urgently.
“Then come back in a week. Zhou Yining and I have girl stuff to do. It’s inconvenient with you here. Go home. We’re busy,” Zhong Yumeng said, starting to shoo him.
“Wait, we’ve known each other for years, and you’re kicking me out for Zhou Yining?”
“Yeah, so what? Go already. If you must, come back after dinner. We’re busy this afternoon.” Zhong Yumeng pulled Zhou Yining upstairs.
As they left, she said to Zhang Ye, “Safe travels. See you next time.”
“Hey, you’re just ditching me?” Zhang Ye was furious. Why did everyone connected to Zhou Yining change their attitude toward him?
In the end, Zhang Ye had no choice but to leave dejectedly.
At six in the evening, Zhou Yining left Zhong Yumeng’s house. She went to a store, bought two sets of clothes, and got a new suitcase. Then she took a taxi home.
Back home, Zhou Yining started packing. Toiletries and clothes were essentials. She also packed pens and notebooks. She filled one suitcase, sealed it, and rested.
Their meeting time was 6:30 a.m. at the gas station on Guiyun Road. It was a bit far from Zhou Yining’s home. She left at six to catch a taxi.
But there were few taxis or ride-hailing cars at that hour.
Surprisingly, Zhou Yuanfei drove up. He rolled down the window and smiled at Zhou Yining. “Tough to get a taxi now, huh? Let me drive you.”
He got out to help with her luggage. Zhou Yining felt goosebumps but, with no taxis available, got into his car.
She wanted to see what Zhou Yuanfei was up to with his sudden kindness.
Their house was some distance from the gas station, but with light traffic, Zhou Yuanfei arrived in twenty minutes.
They weren’t the first. Besides their car, five or six expensive luxury cars were parked nearby.
Zhou Yuanfei’s eyes widened. He looked at Zhou Yining and said, “Yining, these students training with you come from wealthy families. Look at those cars—several luxury ones. You should connect with these classmates…”
“Are you done nagging? I’m leaving.” Zhou Yining didn’t wait for Zhou Yuanfei to ramble. She opened the door, grabbed her luggage from the trunk, and went to check in without looking back.
