After Becoming the Family Head, I Got an Unofficial Fiancée (GL) - Chapter 10
Gu Weiyan didn’t stop what she was doing but continued peeling chestnuts, her deep, green eyes fixed on the young girl in front of her.
Zhang You Qian felt uneasy under Gu Weiyan’s gaze. She had only thought the woman looked familiar, but when she saw the expensive clothes and shoes Gu Weiyan was wearing, it dawned on her that this was the same person who had dropped Jiang Man off at school earlier that morning.
Previously, Zhang You Qian had been observing from a distance, not daring to approach. But now that she was closer, she realized that Gu Weiyan was actually quite attractive.
Zhang You Qian, tall and with a good figure, was never short of attention from boys and girls in school. So, when she first saw Gu Weiyan, she thought she looked pretty and wanted to strike up a conversation.
“I’m Jiang Man’s classmate,” Zhang You Qian said as she stepped closer. “I saw you drop her off at school today. My car was following yours, so you might not have noticed me.” She smiled and leaned in to look at Gu Weiyan. “Sister, what’s your relationship with Jiang Man? Are you her relative?”
Gu Weiyan lowered her eyes, her green gaze scanning the girl carefully.
Since Zhang You Qian was Jiang Man’s classmate, she must also be a senior at Chengbei High School. But the perfume she wore, her full makeup, the non-standard school uniform, and the thousand-dollar sneakers all revealed her intentions very clearly.
“I’m Jiang Man’s cousin,” Gu Weiyan replied calmly. “I dropped her off at school for the first time today.”
Zhang You Qian leaned in closer. “So, are you here to pick Jiang Man up after school?”
Gu Weiyan finished peeling a chestnut and placed it in the bag, giving a soft “Mm,” before returning her attention to the school gate, not paying any more attention to Zhang You Qian.
Seeing that Gu Weiyan wasn’t responding, Zhang You Qian’s gaze shifted to the chestnuts Gu Weiyan had already peeled. She smiled and said, “Sister, you really like chestnuts, don’t you? Want me to peel some for you?”
Gu Weiyan replied calmly, “No need.”
Her friend, who had already bought chestnuts, called out to Zhang You Qian, saying, “You Qian, I’m done. Let’s go.”
“Oh, you go ahead,” Zhang You Qian said to her friend. “I’m waiting for someone.”
Her friend looked at her suspiciously but said nothing, turning around and riding off on her bike. Once the friend had left, Zhang You Qian turned back to Gu Weiyan and smiled. “I know, you’re not really Jiang Man’s cousin, are you?”
Gu Weiyan finished peeling the golden chestnut, placed it in the bag, and replied, “I am her cousin.”
“Jiang Man might be from a rich family, but she can’t afford a car like that,” Zhang You Qian said, her voice casual. “Your car is one of the few in the city. My dad told me that car of yours costs at least five million, not to mention the hidden configurations that make it even more expensive.”
“Your father has sharp eyes,” Gu Weiyan responded in a calm tone, though there was a hint of impatience in her voice. “If you’re just curious about the price of my car, I can tell you. But curiosity in children is best kept in check, or you might get into trouble.”
“So, are you the trouble?” Zhang You Qian asked, her voice playful. “I think you’re very pretty, sister. How about you try going out with me?”
Finally, Gu Weiyan fixed her gaze on Zhang You Qian. Her green eyes locked onto the girl in front of her, calm and indifferent as she said, “I’m not interested in children, especially those who think too highly of themselves.”
Zhang You Qian’s face turned sour. “Sister, isn’t that a bit too harsh? I was just trying to be friendly.”
“But I’m not interested,” Gu Weiyan replied coldly. “Since you’re a student, focus on your studies. Don’t waste time talking to strangers like this.”
Zhang You Qian pressed her lips together, glaring at Gu Weiyan. “You…”
Gu Weiyan stared back at her, her voice cold. “I don’t have a good temper, so you’d better be careful with what you say. Otherwise, I can’t promise I won’t do something about it.”
“You… How can you be like this?” Zhang You Qian was taken aback. She stomped her foot in frustration, glaring at Gu Weiyan before storming off, clearly very angry.
Gu Weiyan didn’t care much for the tantrum of a child. However, when she turned around, she noticed Jiang Man standing at the school gate. When their eyes met, Jiang Man quickly looked away, as if frightened.
Seeing Jiang Man, Gu Weiyan walked up to her, lowering her head to look at her.
“Since you saw me, why are you still standing here?” Gu Weiyan asked softly.
Jiang Man nervously gripped the hem of her school uniform and muttered, “I… I saw you talking to someone, so…”
Gu Weiyan guessed that Jiang Man must have seen her talking with Zhang You-qian. Since she didn’t know what they were talking about, she didn’t dare approach. Gu Weiyan gave her a calm look, unsure how long Jiang Man had been standing there or whether she had overheard her conversation with that girl.
It was likely that Gu Weiyan’s expression had been too unfriendly earlier and scared the girl. So, she took the chestnuts she had in her hand and offered them to Jiang Man. “I just bought these chestnuts. I thought you might like them.”
Jiang Man looked up at her, then shyly took the chestnuts, looking at them. There weren’t many left. She had bought them before after school, usually in a bag that weighed about half a pound, enough to fill a small bag. But now, there were only a few left, and they had already been peeled. Each chestnut was a shiny yellow little ball in the paper bag, while the shells were all packed into the plastic bag outside.
Seeing the already-peeled chestnuts, Jiang Man looked up at Gu Weiyan in surprise. “Did you peel them?”
“Yeah,” Gu Weiyan said. “I had nothing else to do while waiting for you to finish school, so I peeled some chestnuts.”
Jiang Man, feeling special, popped one into her mouth and smiled at Gu Weiyan. “It’s so sweet!”
Seeing the little one smiling so happily, Gu Weiyan’s mood brightened as well. By this time, the area in front of the school had cleared out, so she said to Jiang Man, “It was too crowded at the school gate earlier. I was worried the car wouldn’t be able to get through, so I had the driver park on the street around the corner. Let’s walk over there now.”
Jiang Man nodded, and they started walking across the street together.
The two of them walked along the road. To get to the next street, they had to circle halfway around the school. This section of Green Leaf Road had two full rows of tall, elegant sycamore trees, planted for many years. The trees were so big and shady that only a few rays of the evening sun pierced through, casting beautiful, scattered light spots on the ground.
After school, many students were still playing basketball in the schoolyard. This road ran along the school’s sports field, so Gu Weiyan could see the boys playing basketball as soon as she turned her head.
The boys were full of energy, wearing shorts and T-shirts, competing for the basketball. The girls were gathered nearby with their backpacks and jackets, watching them play. Occasionally, one would join in, and no matter who made a basket, the group would cheer happily, creating a lively and harmonious atmosphere.
Jiang Man noticed that Gu Weiyan was looking toward the school’s sports field, then glanced at her and asked, “Gu Weiyan, where did you go to high school?”
Gu Weiyan glanced at the girl in school uniform beside her and replied, “Huide High School.”
Jiang Man widened her eyes, chewing on a chestnut. “Isn’t that the expensive school?”
“Mm,” Gu Weiyan said, looking at her. “If you want to transfer, I can help you with that. Huide High is also closer to my house.”
“No, it’s okay,” Jiang Man quickly stopped walking and said nervously. “My current school is fine. I don’t need to transfer, and transferring would be too much trouble…”
The main reason was that the tuition at Huide High was very expensive. Jiang Man didn’t want Gu Weiyan to worry about her school fees. She was fine with going to a regular university. She didn’t have any special needs in that area.
Gu Weiyan saw Jiang Man becoming tense again and couldn’t help but smile. “I was just mentioning it casually. If you don’t want to, I won’t force you.”
Hearing this, Jiang Man relaxed a little, and they continued walking. After a couple of steps, Jiang Man couldn’t help but ask, “Gu Weiyan, what were you talking about with Zhang You-qian earlier?”
“She asked me if I was the one who brought you to school this morning.”
“Then… then you…”
“I said yes,” Gu Weiyan looked at Jiang Man and replied. “And I also told her that I’m picking you up after school.”
Jiang Man’s nerves flared again, and she stammered, “T-then…”
Gu Weiyan, amused by how nervous the girl was, teased, “Don’t worry, I told her I’m your cousin. I won’t casually tell others about our relationship.”
“R-really?” Jiang Man tightly gripped the hem of her clothes and looked at Gu Weiyan, her voice small. “Did you really say I’m your cousin?”
Gu Weiyan smiled mischievously but didn’t answer. Instead, she quickened her pace. Worried, Jiang Man grabbed her backpack and hurried to catch up, anxiously calling out, “Gu Weiyan, you really said I’m your cousin, right?”
Once they reached the car, Gu Weiyan noticed Jiang Man standing outside, not getting in. She couldn’t help but say, “Get in the car.”
Jiang Man hesitated, clutching her backpack, afraid to get in. She worried that if others saw her getting into a luxury car, her life at school would become even harder. Besides, Gu Weiyan was quite intimidating, and she didn’t want to be bullied at home either.
Being bullied at home or gossiped about at school—Jiang Man didn’t hesitate for long. As Gu Weiyan’s expression darkened, she hurriedly got into the car and sat beside her, obediently staying quiet.
The gossip would probably start tomorrow, but if she didn’t get in now, Jiang Man feared Gu Weiyan might come out and scold her, so she decisively climbed into the car and sat nervously in the back, too afraid to even breathe loudly.
The driver, Old Xu, watched the whole scene in silence. After a while, he finally asked, “Gu Zong, shall we head out now?”
“Mm.” Gu Weiyan leaned back in her seat and coldly replied, “To the Coastline. We won’t be eating at home today.”
Jiang Man, holding her backpack, looked at her and asked, “Is Coastline a restaurant?”
Old Xu answered, “It’s a Western restaurant. Gu Zong’s a regular there.”
Jiang Man nervously looked at Gu Weiyan, tightening her grip on her school uniform. She softly asked, “Are we really not going home to eat? Did you call Aunt Zhou? She told me this morning she was going to make fish soup for dinner…”
Under Gu Weiyan’s gaze, Jiang Man’s voice grew softer and softer, and in the end, she swallowed the words she wanted to say. She obediently hugged her backpack and sat quietly, not daring to say another word.
Gu Weiyan turned her head and leaned back in her seat, telling Old Xu, “Xu, start the car.”
