After Becoming the Family Head, I Got an Unofficial Fiancée (GL) - Chapter 18
The next morning, when Jiang Man woke up, she didn’t see Gu Weiyan anywhere.
Aunt Zhou was in the kitchen preparing breakfast. When she heard Jiang Man coming downstairs, she poked her head out and said, “Xiao Man, Weiyan had something to do today and left. You’ll have to take a taxi to school.”
“Oh.” Jiang Man, wearing a white lace nightgown, sat on the chair, swinging her legs. She watched Aunt Zhou bring out the breakfast from the kitchen—a fresh batch of steamed buns, sandwiches, and tea eggs.
Jiang Man took a bite of a bun, then looked up as Aunt Zhou filled a bowl of porridge for her. She asked, “Aunt Zhou, what does Gu Weiyan like to eat?”
“What does she like to eat?” Aunt Zhou put the porridge down, thought for a moment, and said, “I don’t think she has anything she particularly likes. She eats whatever’s available, not picky at all.”
Jiang Man nodded, lowering her head and taking another bite of her bun. She then raised her head and asked, “Well, does she like biscuits?”
“Biscuits?” Aunt Zhou looked at her, confused.
“Little bread will do,” Jiang Man said, staring at Aunt Zhou with wide eyes, feeling a little embarrassed. “I was thinking of making something for her to eat…”
Jiang Man didn’t have much pocket money. Most of it was spent every month, and right now, her wallet had less than a thousand yuan. She was really strapped for cash and couldn’t afford to buy a gift for Gu Weiyan. So, she thought she might try baking something herself instead.
Aunt Zhou couldn’t help but laugh. “You could try baking some cookies. Weiyan used to love them when she was younger, though she doesn’t eat much sweet food now that she’s older.”
Jiang Man quickly stuffed the bun into her mouth, took a sip of porridge, then jumped out of her chair. “I’m full, I’m going to school now!”
Watching Jiang Man rush upstairs to change, Aunt Zhou couldn’t help but chuckle as she cleaned up the dishes.
The whole day, Jiang Man kept thinking about baking cookies for Gu Weiyan when she got home. At lunch, she even called Aunt Zhou to ask what ingredients she needed. Aunt Zhou asked if she wanted to buy the ingredients herself, and Jiang Man softly said into the phone, “No, I… I want to make everything by myself from start to finish.”
“Okay, okay,” Aunt Zhou laughed happily. “You can just buy the ingredients. The oven and everything are here at home, you only need to buy the materials.”
After school, Jiang Man went to a supermarket near the school, bought butter, flour, dried fruit, and other ingredients according to the recipe. Since she bought the best ingredients, she spent half of her savings at checkout.
Although she felt a little stingy, Jiang Man was still very happy. She carried the bags back to the villa and began preparing to bake the cookies.
Aunt Zhou watched Jiang Man follow a video tutorial on her phone, mixing dough and preparing the dried fruits. Jiang Man wouldn’t let Aunt Zhou help, so Aunt Zhou had no choice but to leave the kitchen and let her do everything by herself.
Meanwhile, Gu Weiyan had been working all day. She went to the factory for an on-site inspection and didn’t return to the office until the afternoon. She had just sat down in her office for less than two minutes when she received a call from Aunt Zhou.
“Weiyan, when are you coming home today?” Aunt Zhou asked on the phone.
Gu Weiyan leaned back in her chair, rubbing her head. With her eyes closed, she replied, “There’s some work at the company. I still have a meeting to attend, so I might be really late. Don’t wait for me for dinner. I’ll take care of it here at the office.”
“Ah?” Aunt Zhou looked over at Jiang Man, who was still busy in the kitchen. Holding the phone, she walked into the living room and said, “Xiao Man made something for you to eat today. She’s already started cooking. Are you really not coming back?”
“Made something for me to eat?” Gu Weiyan opened her eyes, confused. “What’s she making?”
“I can’t say. Xiao Man asked me to keep it a secret,” Aunt Zhou said. “She asked early this morning what your favorite food was, and after school, she went straight into the kitchen to make it for you. Are you really not coming home?”
Gu Weiyan glanced at the digital clock on her desk—it was already 6:30 PM.
“I might…” Gu Weiyan bit her lip, wanting to decline, but after thinking for a moment, she sighed and said to Aunt Zhou, “Fine, I’ll come back now. I’ll have dinner at home.”
Aunt Zhou smiled, her eyes narrowing with joy. “Good, then be careful on the way home.”
After hanging up the phone, Gu Weiyan leaned back in her chair for a few seconds, then grabbed her coat and stood up.
At that moment, Assistant Chen entered, holding a folder. He said to Gu Weiyan, “The financial report for the factory this quarter is ready. I’ve also arranged the meeting with the department heads for later. CEO Gu… CEO Gu, where are you going?”
Gu Weiyan glanced at him and replied, “Home.”
“Home?!” Assistant Chen’s eyes widened in shock. “I just informed all the department heads and managers, and many of them are already in the conference room. How can you be going home?”
“There’s something at home,” Gu Weiyan told him. “It’s getting late, so let everyone go home first. We’ll have the meeting at the headquarters tomorrow at 9 AM.”
Without waiting for Assistant Chen to figure out the arrangements, she called her driver, Lao Xu, and told him to bring the car downstairs to take her home.
By around 7 PM, Jiang Man’s cookies had finally finished baking. She took a cranberry cookie, tasted it, and found it crispy and fragrant with a strong buttery flavor. It actually tasted pretty good.
The smell wafting from the kitchen caught Aunt Zhou’s attention as she looked at the freshly baked cookies in the oven and praised, “It smells delicious.”
“Aunt Zhou.” Jiang Man picked up a warm cream cookie and handed it to her, “Could you taste it and see if it’s good?”
Aunt Zhou took a bite, nodded, and said, “It’s really delicious. Weiyan will definitely like it.”
Jiang Man placed the baking tray aside to cool and then asked Aunt Zhou, “Do you know when Gu Weiyan will be back?”
“I called her around 6:30, and she said she’d be home soon. She should be here by now.”
“Hmm… then I’ll clean up here. Aunt Zhou, please get the food ready. She still needs to eat when she gets back.”
Aunt Zhou smiled, her eyes narrowing in amusement. “Alright, alright, I’ll keep it simple today and just make noodles. You clean up here, and I’ll go wash the vegetables.”
After Jiang Man finished tidying up the oven and the countertop, she heard the sound of a car coming from the yard. She quickly put things down and ran to the door, pressing her ear against it. As soon as she heard someone stepping up the stairs, she quickly opened the door.
When the door swung open, the rich scent of milk rushed in, and Gu Weiyan froze for a moment.
“You’re back!”
Jiang Man, with a fragrant milk scent surrounding her, looked at Gu Weiyan and smiled. “Aunt Zhou is making noodles downstairs. How about we have noodles for dinner tonight?”
Gu Weiyan’s emerald green eyes darkened as she inhaled the milky fragrance coming from Jiang Man. The child now looked as sweet as a cream cake, wearing casual clothes and running to open the door, filling the air with a strong milky scent. It almost made her lose control.
No, she’s still so young…
Jiang Man, not understanding why Gu Weiyan was silent, curiously let go of the doorknob and walked up to her. Tilting her head, she asked, “What’s wrong, Weiyan?”
Gu Weiyan lowered her head and looked at her, the smell of milk filling her nose, making her heart race uncontrollably. She felt drawn to Jiang Man’s scent, wanting to hold her in her arms and tear her clothes off…
“Gu… Gu Weiyan…”
Jiang Man reached out to grab her jacket, instinctively resisting the strange posture, not wanting her to get any closer but too afraid to push her away. She could only blush and plead in a soft voice, “It’s ticklish, Weiyan…”
Gu Weiyan finally regained her composure, straightened up, and looked at her. “I heard from Aunt Zhou that you made something for me. What is it?”
Jiang Man’s face turned red. She tugged on Gu Weiyan’s sleeve and said, “I baked… baked some cookies.”
Gu Weiyan asked her, “Why did you bake cookies out of the blue?”
Jiang Man bit her lip and quietly said, “You’ve treated me to dinner twice, taken me back to the Jiang family, and even helped me with the parent-teacher meeting. Most importantly… you brought my teddy bear over. I… I just thought, I should do something for you.”
Her face was flushed, and she spoke softly, embarrassed. “I don’t have much money, I can’t afford expensive things, so… I could only bake some cookies. I hope you don’t mind…”
“I won’t mind.” Gu Weiyan looked at her and smiled softly. “Let’s go inside.”
When Aunt Zhou heard the door opening and closing, she poked her head out from the kitchen and said, “Weiyan is back, huh? Tonight we’re having noodles. How about some fried sauce noodles? I have some minced meat ready.”
Gu Weiyan took off her coat and answered, “Sounds good.”
Jiang Man, acting like a little maid, grabbed Gu Weiyan’s coat and hung it up on the coat rack. As Gu Weiyan changed her shoes, she said, “The cookies just came out. Would you like to try one?”
Gu Weiyan naturally didn’t refuse. “Sure, go ahead and get them.”
Jiang Man ran to the kitchen, placed the cookies on a small tray, and also poured Gu Weiyan a glass of milk before bringing everything to the dining table.
Gu Weiyan sat down, picked up a cookie, took a bite, and praised, “It’s really delicious.”
Jiang Man was overjoyed and eagerly pushed more cookies toward her. “I made several kinds! There’s cranberry, mango, and raisin. Try them all.”
Gu Weiyan thought the cranberry ones were fine, but the other flavors sounded unfamiliar. Still, she didn’t want to refuse the child’s kind gesture. She ate all the cookies on the small plate and even drank a sip of milk.
“They’re really delicious, thank you.” Gu Weiyan looked at the child in front of her, stood up, and said, “You can put the rest away. I’m going to go upstairs and change…”
But as she was about to finish her sentence, Gu Weiyan suddenly felt the table in front of her blur and her body grew weak. Her breath became louder in her ears, but it was soon drowned out by the ringing in her head.
Before she could react, she stumbled for a moment and then fainted, collapsing heavily to the ground in front of Jiang Man.
Just before she lost consciousness, she saw Jiang Man’s pale face and Aunt Zhou rushing out of the kitchen with a spatula. After that, everything went black.
