After Becoming the Family Head, I Got an Unofficial Fiancée (GL) - Chapter 19
At the time of the incident, everyone in the house panicked. Jiang Man had never seen anything like this before. She stood frozen in place, her face pale with fear.
Aunt Zhou rushed over to Gu Weiyan, saw her condition, and noticed red patches deep in her collar. She immediately turned to Jiang Man and asked, “Did you put peanuts in the cookies?”
“Peanuts?!” Jiang Man’s mind was in a whirlwind as she desperately tried to recall. “I think I added some crushed peanuts, mixed in with the walnuts.”
Hearing this, Aunt Zhou quickly said, “Call Old Xu right away! Tell him to come back and take Gu Weiyan to the hospital!”
Jiang Man looked at Gu Weiyan, who had collapsed on the floor, and stumbled to ask, “Gu Weiyan, what… what happened to her?”
“Don’t ask so many questions, just call now! If Old Xu can’t make it, call an ambulance!” Aunt Zhou ordered.
The next events were a blur to Jiang Man. She took Gu Weiyan’s phone and called Old Xu. Luckily, Old Xu hadn’t gone too far, and he turned around and came back within five minutes. He then helped carry the unconscious Gu Weiyan into the car.
A group of people rushed Gu Weiyan to the emergency room. Aunt Zhou told the doctor, “She has a peanut allergy! She can’t eat any peanuts at all. Please, you must save her!”
Jiang Man stood at the emergency room door, her head buzzing as she listened to Aunt Zhou.
Gu Weiyan had a peanut allergy and couldn’t eat even a little.
But Jiang Man had put a lot of crushed peanuts in the cookies she made, and Gu Weiyan had eaten all of them to cheer her up. Now she was in the hospital because of an allergic reaction—this was all because of Jiang Man’s negligence.
How could she not have known about Gu Weiyan’s allergy?
Aunt Zhou and Old Xu were busy calling the Gu family and handling the paperwork for Gu Weiyan. From evening until the sun had set, Jiang Man felt completely useless. She sat in a chair outside the emergency room, staring down at her feet.
Soon, a group of people arrived at the emergency room. The first to come in was Gu Weiyan’s mother, wearing a black dress. The sound of her high heels clicking on the hospital floor was like the sound of a death knell.
“Where’s Weiyan?”
Gu Weiyan’s mother rushed over to Aunt Zhou, her face as pale as a sheet, asking, “How is she? Is she alright?”
“She’s in the emergency room,” Aunt Zhou comforted Gu Weiyan’s mother. “Don’t worry, the nurse just told me they’re still treating her. Please don’t panic. Weiyan is a lucky girl. She will be fine.”
Gu Weiyan’s mother shook her head, her eyes red. She grabbed Aunt Zhou’s hand and asked, “What happened? How could she suddenly have a peanut allergy? She’s always been careful. We never have peanut products at home. What’s going on?”
“It’s… it’s my fault…”
Jiang Man stood up, looking at Gu Weiyan’s mother, who was gripping her clothes tightly, and quietly explained, “I didn’t know Gu Weiyan had a peanut allergy. I made cookies today and put peanuts in them…”
Slap—
Before Jiang Man could finish, she was slapped across the face, her head snapping to the side.
Gu Weiyan’s mother looked surprised at Jiang Man’s aunt, who had followed her into the room. After hearing Jiang Man’s explanation, Jiang Man’s aunt angrily slapped her, her face twisted with fury as she shouted, “How could you do something like this?! You’ve known Weiyan for so long, how could you make such a mistake?!”
Jiang Man, stunned by the slap, didn’t dare to resist. Her head spun, and her ears rang with the force of it.
Jiang Man’s aunt continued to yell, pointing at Jiang Man and cursing, “If anything happens to Gu Weiyan, you’ll regret this for the rest of your life!”
Gu Weiyan’s mother was also shocked. She looked at Jiang Man’s aunt, who was shouting at her niece as if she were a stranger, and paused for a moment. Wasn’t her own daughter the one lying unconscious in the emergency room? Why was Jiang Man being scolded like this?
Aunt Zhou, standing nearby, was also taken aback. She exchanged a confused look with Gu Weiyan’s mother.
But soon, the emergency room door opened, and Gu Weiyan’s mother immediately forgot about the argument. She rushed to look at Gu Weiyan, and upon seeing her still unconscious, she was overcome with emotion and burst into tears.
Because Gu Weiyan had suffered a sudden food allergy with a severe reaction, the hospital decided to admit her overnight for observation.
During this time, no one knew exactly how Jiang Man was taken home by Jiang Man’s aunt. By the time Gu Weiyan’s mother and Aunt Zhou realized, Jiang Man was nowhere to be found.
Before she lost consciousness, Gu Weiyan saw Jiang Man’s pale face and thought to herself that she must have scared the girl again.
She was just a high school student, how could she have ever seen something like this before? She might even cry.
Gu Weiyan hadn’t expected there to be peanuts in the cookies Jiang Man baked. They were mixed with walnuts, so she didn’t even notice. She ended up eating all of them.
When she was younger, Gu Weiyan wasn’t careful about her food and had to be hospitalized a few times because of her allergies. Since then, she started paying attention to what she ate, because she didn’t want to risk her life with a single meal. She became cautious when eating out, always avoiding foods she hadn’t tried before. She also avoided revealing her allergy to others, so no one would try to take advantage of her condition.
The mall is like a battlefield, and for Gu Weiyan, peanuts are no different from poison.
When Gu Weiyan slowly opened her eyes, all she saw was an unfamiliar white ceiling and a saline drip in her line of sight.
There seemed to be someone else in the room. Gu Weiyan turned her head and saw Aunt Zhou and Ke Yinan.
Aunt Zhou was facing away from the bed, arranging flowers. It seemed that someone had sent flowers while she was unconscious. There were four or five bouquets on the windowsill, clearly gifts from others, along with various nutritional supplements and fruits piled up into a small mountain.
Ke Yinan, on the other hand, was focused on playing a game. After finishing a round, he finally turned his attention to Gu Weiyan. The two of them locked eyes, and Ke Yinan froze for a moment before quickly calling out to Aunt Zhou, “Aunt Zhou, Weiyan’s awake.”
Aunt Zhou rushed over immediately, relieved to see Gu Weiyan’s eyes open. She said, “I’ll go call the doctor. You stay lying down for a while, Weiyan.”
Gu Weiyan watched Aunt Zhou leave and then scanned the single-bed room, noticing that only Ke Yinan remained.
“Miss Gu, what are you staring at?” Ke Yinan propped his chin on his hand and teased, “Am I not enough of a beauty for you to look at?”
Gu Weiyan let out a long sigh, closed her eyes, and asked, “How long have I been out?”
“Not long. Just three days,” Ke Yinan replied. “You set a record this time. How many peanuts did you eat? You almost didn’t make it.”
Ke Yinan was one of the few people who knew about her peanut allergy. Aside from her family, only he knew the details of Gu Weiyan’s condition.
“I don’t remember,” Gu Weiyan said, lying back on the bed. After a long pause, she asked, “Where’s Jiang Man?”
“Your little fiancée?” Ke Yinan crossed his arms and reclined, answering lazily, “I heard she was taken back to her parents’ house. I haven’t seen her these past few days while you’ve been unconscious.”
Gu Weiyan was about to ask more, but a group of doctors and nurses entered, surrounding her to check her condition. After the check-up, the attending doctor said, “You’ll need to stay under observation for a few more days. We recommend staying in the hospital a little longer.”
“How many more days?” Ke Yinan asked the doctor, half-jokingly.
“Four more days,” the doctor replied. “Rest for now. You should have some light food to regain your strength.”
Once they left, Ke Yinan propped his chin up again and whispered to Gu Weiyan, “Hospital fees are about seven or eight hundred a day. They’re definitely taking advantage of you. In the past, you’d wake up and go home right away. They’re making a big fuss over nothing.”
But Aunt Zhou didn’t share Ke Yinan’s opinion. She said to him, “Xiao Nan, don’t say that. Staying a couple more days will give the doctors more time to observe and make sure nothing’s wrong.”
Ke Yinan smiled and replied, “You’re right, Aunt Zhou. Shouldn’t you call Aunt Gu? She’ll definitely be happy to know when Weiyan wakes up.”
Aunt Zhou nodded. “Yes, I’ll call Madam Gu. She’ll be so relieved.”
After Aunt Zhou left the room to make the call, Gu Weiyan turned to Ke Yinan and asked, “Where’s my phone?”
“Oh?” Ke Yinan picked up the phone from the side and handed it to her, teasing, “Can’t see your little fiancée, now you miss her, huh?”
Gu Weiyan shot him a glare. “Who misses her?”
Ke Yinan chuckled and said, “The fact that you’re denying it means I’m right. Now I have to think about what kind of sports car you should get.”
Gu Weiyan didn’t bother replying. She called Jiang Man, but the phone went straight to voicemail.
Looking at the time, it was 10 a.m. on Thursday. Jiang Man was probably still in class, so it made sense that her phone was off.
Gu Weiyan put the phone away, deciding to try again at lunchtime.
Soon after, Madam Gu arrived. Seeing Gu Weiyan awake, she sat down by the bed, sighing and wiping her tears. The sight made Gu Weiyan unable to hold back a laugh.
“You’re still laughing?” Madam Gu scolded, “Do you have any idea how dangerous this was? You almost ended up in the ICU, do you know that?”
Gu Weiyan smiled and said, “I was unconscious, how would I know?”
“Still being cheeky?”
“How dare I?”
Seeing that Gu Weiyan had regained her strength, Madam Gu sighed again. After a few seconds, she seemed to make a decision and said, “Jiang Man was taken back to the Jiang family by her aunt. She was picked up the day you were in the accident. She even slapped Jiang Man, saying she hadn’t taken good care of you. She wanted to take her back and discipline her properly, telling our family not to make a big deal out of it.”
Gu Weiyan’s brows furrowed tightly at the mention of Jiang Man being slapped.
“Your grandfather knows about this now too,” Madam Gu continued. “It was Jiang Man who added peanuts to the cookies. The Jiang family has taken her back, and there’s nothing we can do about it. But, honestly, we can’t blame her entirely. Aunt Zhou said she was careless. Jiang Man insisted on doing it herself, and Aunt Zhou didn’t help her. If she had just taken a look, this wouldn’t have happened.”
“Mom,” Gu Weiyan said, “We can’t blame anyone for this. Aunt Zhou wasn’t wrong, and neither was Jiang Man.”
Madam Gu gave her a long look before taking her hand and saying, “Let’s not talk about this now. You just woke up. Rest some more, and when you’re ready to leave the hospital, we’ll discuss the issue with the Jiang family.”
