After Becoming the Family Head, I Got an Unofficial Fiancée (GL) - Chapter 7
At dinner time, Jiang Man sat at the dining table, quietly eating her meal. Gu Weiyan sat across from her, with one person between them, both silently eating.
When Aunt Zhou left, she had left enough food for two. Just when Jiang Man was about to heat it up for lunch, she heard a knock on the door. When she opened it, she found it was a food delivery. After calling, she learned it had been ordered specifically by Gu Weiyan for her.
Since Gu Weiyan hadn’t finished her meal last night, the table was now full of food. If they didn’t eat it now, it would go to waste.
Jiang Man ate quietly, chewing with her mouth closed. Every now and then, she glanced at Gu Weiyan, looking like she wanted to say something but held back.
Gu Weiyan picked up some food, not lifting her head, and said in a low voice, “Are you trying to say something?”
Jiang Man paused, her hand holding the spoon frozen in midair. She swallowed the food in her mouth and then quietly said, “I don’t think I can finish all this food.”
“Hmm.” Gu Weiyan replied calmly, “Next time, tell Aunt Zhou to make less, or don’t make it at all. It’s wasteful if we can’t finish it.”
Jiang Man agreed. She couldn’t cook as well as Aunt Zhou, but she could still make some simple dishes, like porridge or stir-fried vegetables. She gripped her chopsticks and said, “I can cook too. When Aunt Zhou is resting, I can cook for us at home.”
When Gu Weiyan heard this, she raised her head and glanced at her, then asked, “Did you clean the house today?”
Jiang Man nodded obediently. She had woken up this morning, washed her clothes, mopped the floors, and wiped the cabinets. She only started her homework in the afternoon.
Gu Weiyan looked at her, somewhat puzzled. The house was spotless, and it didn’t seem like she was holding a grudge or anything.
So why… Never mind, as long as she wasn’t holding any grudges.
Stirring her soup with the spoon, Gu Weiyan said, “Next time, you don’t have to clean. Leave it to Aunt Zhou.”
When Jiang Man heard this, she immediately became nervous. “Did I not clean it properly?”
Gu Weiyan raised an eyebrow, looking at her. “Why would you think that?”
Jiang Man didn’t answer. She just lowered her head and took a few more bites, unsure how to respond. Back when she was at the Jiang family’s house, she always did the housework when the maid wasn’t around. So when she came here, she wanted to help out as much as she could.
But from Gu Weiyan’s tone, it seemed like she didn’t appreciate it.
Worrying about what to say, Jiang Man finished her meal and then, with her light-colored eyes, glanced at Gu Weiyan, saying softly, “I’m done. When you’re finished eating, just leave the dishes on the table. I’ll clean up.”
Something felt off to Gu Weiyan, and as she finished her meal, she stared at Jiang Man for a moment before speaking in a gentle tone, “You’re not a maid. You don’t have to rush to do everything.”
Jiang Man felt a chill in her heart.
Was Gu Weiyan going to send her back home?
She gripped the edge of her clothes tightly, her eyes on Gu Weiyan’s face, not daring to say a word, like a frightened little quail.
Just as Gu Weiyan was about to speak, her phone, which was lying on the table, suddenly rang. She glanced at it, and her brow furrowed immediately.
Jiang Man watched her pick up the phone, listening to her say a few “mm-hm” responses, and noticed her expression growing darker. Finally, she said, “Got it,” and hung up.
After hanging up, Gu Weiyan looked at Jiang Man for a moment of silence, then said, “Tomorrow, my mom is coming to visit us.”
It took Jiang Man a moment to process this, and she blinked, wide-eyed. “Huh? Aunt Gu is coming?!”
Jiang Man had only met Gu Weiyan’s mother twice. The first time was at a family dinner, but back then, she was only focused on Gu Weiyan and didn’t pay much attention to Aunt Gu. The second time was when Gu Weiyan came to pick her up from the Jiang family.
Before that, Jiang’s mother often told Jiang Man about how rich Aunt Gu was, how she was dressed in luxury from head to toe, with her outfit costing millions. She warned Jiang Man not to offend her.
So when Jiang Man sat in the car with Aunt Gu, she kept her distance, afraid she might accidentally damage that million-dollar look.
However, the second time she met Aunt Gu, the woman was kind and treated Jiang Man well. She chatted with her during the car ride, and when she dropped her off at Gu Weiyan’s house, she asked Aunt Zhou to take good care of her.
Jiang Man still had a good impression of Aunt Gu, though their relationship hadn’t gone beyond that. So when she heard she was coming, she couldn’t help but be a little surprised.
Gu Weiyan, arms crossed, spoke with a somewhat helpless tone, “My mom said we’ve been living together for over a week now, and she wants to come visit us, maybe check if you need anything.”
Jiang Man blinked and said softly, “I don’t need anything.”
Gu Weiyan smiled and teased, “She’s worried that I might need something from you.”
Jiang Man looked at Gu Weiyan’s smile and couldn’t help but pinch the corner of her clothes. Though Gu Weiyan had a strong presence, her smile made her look really nice, especially with those pale green eyes, which seemed even brighter when observed closely.
She was really a beautiful woman.
In her heart, Jiang Man thought that Gu Weiyan should smile more often. If she did, she wouldn’t look so serious all the time, which made her seem less approachable.
Gu Weiyan noticed that Jiang Man kept staring at her, not sure what was going through her mind. But Jiang Man’s curious expression seemed interesting to her.
“Do you remember what we agreed on?” Gu Weiyan looked at Jiang Man and said, “Tomorrow, you have to help me act in front of my mom.”
“I… I don’t know how to act,” Jiang Man said nervously. “What if I mess it up?”
“If you mess up, it’s fine.” Gu Weiyan smiled. “We’ve only known each other for a little over a week, it’s normal that we’re not familiar with each other yet.”
Jiang Man thought to herself that what she said made sense. After all, it had only been about eight or nine days since they met. In such a short time, it was impossible for them to be too close. The pressure on her suddenly eased.
“Okay,” Jiang Man nodded. “I’ll cooperate with you.”
Gu Weiyan looked at the earnest little girl and couldn’t help but find her amusing.
The next day, Aunt Zhou returned. As soon as she arrived, she immediately started inspecting Jiang Man, asking her about the night she had gone out alone to buy medicine. She was worried and reminded her that a young girl shouldn’t be out so late—it was dangerous.
Jiang Man admitted her mistake and promised she would be more careful next time.
Today, Gu Weiyan took the day off to accompany Mrs. Gu on some errands. She slept until 9 a.m. and was just finishing her morning routine when Mrs. Gu arrived at the door.
Aunt Zhou and Mrs. Gu were around the same age and had known each other for a long time. After exchanging pleasantries, they noticed Gu Weiyan standing on the second floor, looking down. Mrs. Gu couldn’t help but say to her daughter, “You’re still sleeping at this hour?”
Gu Weiyan yawned and replied, “Yeah, Mom, you should’ve come later so I could sleep a bit more.”
“You lazy child, you’re almost thirty and still acting like this,” Mrs. Gu said, clearly annoyed.
At that moment, Jiang Man came from the kitchen with a cup of tea. She carefully handed it to Mrs. Gu and said, “Auntie, please have some tea.”
Mrs. Gu took the tea with a smile. “Xiao Man, are you getting used to living here? My daughter didn’t bully you, did she?”
Jiang Man shook her head. “No, Gu Weiyan is really nice to me.”
Gu Weiyan, who had been watching from the second floor, thought it was rare for her mother to speak so gently.
Mrs. Gu smiled at Jiang Man and said, “That’s good. Our Weiyan isn’t easy to get along with—her temper is bad and her personality is difficult. Everyone is afraid of her, she’s like a tigress.”
Jiang Man blinked, not daring to speak.
Mrs. Gu continued, “Now that you two are living together, you should help her work on her temper. When she gets angry, even her father and I are scared of her.”
Jiang Man nodded. She had definitely felt that. The other day when Gu Weiyan yelled at her, it had really scared her.
Such a beautiful person, yet when she was angry, she looked so terrifying. Plus, with her long, dark, wavy hair, she resembled Medusa from Greek mythology—her hair turned into hissing snakes, making her all the more frightening.
But Jiang Man also understood that Gu Weiyan wasn’t actually angry at her; it was all for her own good.
“Auntie,” Jiang Man felt that now was a good time to say something nice about Gu Weiyan. She turned to Mrs. Gu and said, “Actually, Gu Weiyan is really a good person.”
Mrs. Gu’s eyes lit up, her smile widening with joy. When she saw Gu Weiyan coming down the stairs, she couldn’t help but say, “Weiyan, did you hear that? Xiao Man says you’re a good person.”
Gu Weiyan glanced at Jiang Man and replied, her tone serious, “I’ve always been a good person.”
At noon, Aunt Zhou prepared a big spread with fish and meat. While they were eating, Mrs. Gu kept serving Jiang Man more food, saying, “Xiao Man, you’re too skinny. Do you even weigh 80 pounds? You’re too thin, it’s not good for your health. You’d look better if you gained a little weight.”
Jiang Man nodded and ate whatever Mrs. Gu served her, not daring to be picky.
After a lively and delicious meal, Gu Weiyan thought her mom would be ready to leave, but to her surprise, Mrs. Gu insisted on taking Jiang Man shopping.
Gu Weiyan: “…”
Jiang Man saw the change in Gu Weiyan’s expression and quietly said to Mrs. Gu, “Auntie, I really don’t need anything. We don’t have to go shopping…”
But Mrs. Gu insisted, “What’s the big deal? When you first came here, you only brought one suitcase. It’s almost September, and school’s starting soon. Don’t you need new clothes and shoes? Don’t try to refuse.”
Jiang Man felt a bit overwhelmed. She turned to look at Gu Weiyan for help, unsure what to do. Gu Weiyan, catching her “help me” signal, calmly said to her mom, “She’s right, we should buy her some things. School’s starting, and she’ll need some new supplies.”
Mrs. Gu’s eyes sparkled with joy. “Now you’re talking!”
So, Mrs. Gu, Gu Weiyan, and Jiang Man went out. Mrs. Gu sat in the front passenger seat, while the two girls were in the back.
Jiang Man seemed a little nervous, tightly clutching her skirt and looking around, her entire body radiating discomfort.
Mrs. Gu, noticing this in the rearview mirror, caught Gu Weiyan’s attention. Without hesitation, Gu Weiyan took Jiang Man’s hand in hers, causing Jiang Man to jump in surprise. She looked at her, wide-eyed.
“Have you figured out what you’re missing yet?” Gu Weiyan asked, her fingers naturally entwined with Jiang Man’s. “How about we stop by the stationery store later?”
Jiang Man stared at her for several seconds before finally realizing that Gu Weiyan was just playing along. She let her hold her hand and softly replied, “Okay…”
