“Fudra-sama… Please, I’m begging you, could you take on some subjugation requests already?”

“Huh? Why?”

I had just gone to the Adventurer’s Guild to withdraw some money when the receptionist broke down and pleaded with me.

“Why, you ask? This guild is home to three A-rank adventurers—why aren’t any of you taking on subjugation requests? We were so excited when an A-rank party of three joined us. We had such high expectations… So why won’t you take any requests?”

Their circumstances didn’t concern me.

“Uh, isn’t it a rule that only D-rank adventurers have to take on at least one request a month? That doesn’t apply to us A-rank adventurers, right?”

“Yes, but… there’s been a recent increase in orc populations, sightings of higher-level ogres, and reports of wyverns near the rocky areas. Can’t you do something about it?”

That sounded like a hassle.

Frankly, most monsters and demon species around here were practically like family to me now. If it’s limited to the ones near Goranica, I couldn’t take action anyway. After all, Aisha-san’s mate, Orga-san, is essentially an ally.

Call it opportunistic, but the more monsters there are, the better my wallet looks.

These were creatures I could communicate with—friendly allies.

There was no way I could bring myself to subjugate them.

“Well, I’m newly married, and we’re financially stable, so I figured I’d take it easy for a while. Besides, before I came along, Aisha-san was the only A-rank adventurer in Goranica, and she managed despite the poor treatment she got. I’m sure the other adventurers can handle it, right?”

“Um… but even if it’s a life-or-death situation for C-rank adventurers, A-rank adventurers could handle it with ease. Isn’t there something you could do?”

No matter how much she pleaded, I couldn’t take on monster subjugation requests.

“Well, okay, wyverns might be tough for C-rank adventurers, so I’ll consider that one. But as for the rest, why not let others handle it? Not to sound harsh, but it’s not like I became an A-rank by slacking off. Honestly, though, it’s the ones who don’t take on adventures who tend to live the longest.

“Even so…”

“Let’s not forget, this guild has a habit of treating adventurers poorly when they lose. Remember how they treated Aisha-san after she came back battered from fighting the Demon King? You guys acted like she didn’t even exist. That’s why I’m scared of failure. No matter how nice you act now, I know you’ll tear me apart if I mess up. So if I’m going to take on a job, it’ll only be something I’m 100% confident I won’t fail at. That’s where I stand. And if you keep pressuring me, I’ll just go somewhere else. Adventurers are free to go wherever they like, after all.”

“That’s… not what we want…”

“For now, I’ll think about the wyverns, depending on what my companions decide. The rest? C-rank adventurers should be able to handle it. You really need to stop babying adventurers.”

“You’re right…”

Well, I guess I could take on the wyverns since they’re neither monsters nor demons.

But I can’t touch the monsters anymore.

If this place becomes too much of a hassle to live in… maybe it’s time to move somewhere else.
