After Being Targeted By A Sweet Girl With Big Eyes - Chapter 3
Chapter 3: Crybaby
“Are you a P?”
Fu Tian didn’t answer Jiang Ruyi’s question. Instead, she asked Jiang Ruyi a question that completely caught her off guard.
“Huh?”
Jiang Ruyi exchanged a look with Fan Ling. Seeing Fu Tian deliberately ask this question with a feigned sense of worldliness, Jiang Ruyi immediately dropped her meek demeanor. She put her arm around Fan Ling, and the two of them chuckled like partners in crime. “What is this T and P nonsense? Do you think this is the Chinese gay male dynamic? Sweetie, we don’t bother with that. Two women—it’s baseless talk. We all have physical needs, you know.”
Fu Tian was clearly startled by Jiang Ruyi’s suggestive remark. After a moment of silence, she asked again, “Are you two really a couple?”
She asks so many questions, Jiang Ruyi thought. She patted Fan Ling and said, “Hey, are you one of our 10 CP fans? Good taste! Anyway, since we’ve disbanded, I can even…” She trailed off, then had a new idea. “If you forgive me, I can give you some fan service right here. How about it?”
Fan Ling gave Fu Tian a speechless look. She truly had no idea how Fu Tian concluded they were a couple, nor how Jiang Ruyi concluded Fu Tian was their CP fan.
Fu Tian was getting exasperated. “I’m not.”
“Aw~” Jiang Ruyi sounded regretful. “I was just thinking about the best angle to kiss our Ling beautifully. What a shame.”
“I’m not!” she emphasized again.
“Alright, alright, I know you’re not.” Jiang Ruyi was completely out of ideas now. She suddenly asked something she had been dying to know. “Hey, do you always stare with your eyes wide open like that?”
She found Fu Tian’s eyes very strange—an inexplicable kind of oddness. Did she have work done?
“No, my eyes are naturally this big. Sister, maybe your eyes can’t open wide because you have muscle weakness.”
“Stop talking rubbish. This is my style, don’t you get it?”
She leaned closer to Fu Tian, scrutinizing her, and suddenly realized. “Don’t you have any honest friends? Do you know that photo on your farewell stage poster? Your eyes look incredibly weird—your pupil is fully exposed! It’s super unsettling. I said to myself, how can a normal person’s eyes be that big? See, you look fine now. Just tell the photographer not to take any more high-angle shots of you.”
“And that eyeliner of yours! You’re quite tall, wearing this style of dress—aren’t you just highlighting your flaws and hiding your strengths?” She tried to continue, but Fan Ling elbowed her in the waist, causing her to yelp. She meekly added, “I’m sorry. But, I’m done saying what I needed to say.”
And you look so proud of it, Fan Ling thought. She was embarrassed. She had truly never witnessed Jiang Ruyi confronting someone she disliked before. So, this is her childish, trouble-making autopilot mode.
Fu Tian remained silent, her expression even more wronged. It looked like she could burst into tears right there with her mouth clamped shut. Fan Ling quickly tried to compensate. “Oh, my! That’s just her aesthetic, don’t be sad. You know, you can ask for anything you want. She’ll agree to it.” She pressed down on Jiang Ruyi’s neck. “Tell her, isn’t that right?”
“I haven’t thought of anything yet. Just add my contact information for now, and I’ll tell you when I think of it.”
“Why so much hassle? Won’t I disgust you in your phone?” she grumbled softly. She pulled out her phone. “Should I scan you, or should you scan me?”
“You scan me.”
“Heh, look at you, afraid I won’t take responsibility. I’ll own up to my actions. I’ll compensate you for what I owe.”
With a chime, Jiang Ruyi grabbed Fan Ling and left without looking back. “We’ve connected! Hurry up and think of something and let me know!”
On the way out, she ran into Tan Huiyun, who was returning to find Fu Tian. The two had a good impression of each other, and without a word, they instinctively pulled out their phones to exchange contact information before leaving.
Fan Ling looked back. Fu Tian’s expression was indistinct and complex as she watched Jiang Ruyi leave.
…
Outside the bar, the sunset glow was dazzling, which again reminded Jiang Ruyi of Fu Tian of Sunset Pact. Jiang Ruyi hated the heat outside, so she stopped linking arms with Fan Ling, leaving enough space between them for another person to pass. “Ugh, maybe I should just pay her some money. Why make it so complicated?”
“Does she look like she needs your pocket change? You don’t earn much, and now you’re going to pay for your mouth again.”
“Don’t worry about it. Life is short, and I’ll do whatever I want. Ouch!” She suddenly yelped and grabbed Fan Ling. “Wait, weren’t we supposed to be out drinking? Why did we leave the same time the band performance ended? I only had one drink, and now I’m exhausted. We got ripped off! Sister Meng promised us a free tab tonight. Would it look pathetic if we went back now?”
She stood her ground, and Fan Ling couldn’t pull her away. “After the mess you made with Fu Tian tonight, you still want to drink? I don’t even have the energy to scold you. The mood is ruined. I’m going home. You can go wherever you like.”
“No way,” Jiang Ruyi whined, clinging to Fan Ling. “I haven’t eaten yet! I’m practically moving back to my hometown. If you don’t eat with me, who will? The band broke up, the girlfriend is gone, and I don’t need to manage my figure for a while. Let’s go out and eat well!”
“You really have no emotional capacity.”
“Don’t worry about it! I was smart enough not to drive tonight because I knew I’d be drinking. Going home now would completely waste my foresight! Come on, let’s find a nice place to eat and give our CP fans one last bit of fan service! I’m telling you, even though we’re fake, any time our two faces appear in the same frame, who wouldn’t say, ‘Iconic photo!'”
The two acted immediately, and once the food arrived, it was a flurry of chaotic photo-taking. Jiang Ruyi and Fan Ling had the best relationship in the band—or, to put it another way, Fan Ling was the only person Jiang Ruyi was close to in the band.
Both of them came from wealthy families. Contrary to what you see in novels and TV shows where people fawn over the rich, the bandmates had actually started forming cliques early on during company rehearsals. They felt that Jiang Ruyi and Fan Ling had gotten in through the back door, so they unilaterally decided to exclude them.
Jiang Ruyi was oblivious and simply continued happily treating them to meals and trips. Fan Ling was slow to warm up, too lazy to join cliques, and too lazy to socialize, so she was gradually excluded by the others.
By the time they realized their bandmates were friendly to their faces but gossiping about them behind their backs, they still chose not to form a counter-clique.
However, the constant exclusion actually gave the two more opportunities to spend time together. Jiang Ruyi thought Fan Ling was cool and authentic, while Fan Ling found Jiang Ruyi genuinely naive and guileless. Their values aligned, and their attitudes toward people and situations converged. Eventually, they became close friends.
Jiang Ruyi noticed Fan Ling only took a couple of bites before putting down her utensils and playing with her phone, which angered her. “Are you even trying? I specially chose your favorite dishes! We’re finally free, so eat big! Why are you just nibbling? My cat eats in big, happy mouthfuls! What are you doing?”
Fan Ling didn’t look up from her phone. “I’m editing our photos for you. Besides, you’re giving up on figure management, but I’m not.”
Hearing that she was editing photos for her, which reduced her workload, Jiang Ruyi’s outrage was somewhat diminished. She grumbled, “Fine, fine. Why does an asexual person care about figure management anyway? You live your life for yourself, so just do whatever makes you happy.”
“I like my body as it is. Look at my jawline, my arm definition, and my abs! I’m very satisfied. You can indulge all you want. These are the results of my hard work and sweat, and I’m not going to waste it.”
Jiang Ruyi narrowed her eyes and chuckled lewdly. “Why don’t you lift your shirt and show me your abs? Good sisters should share good things like that!”
“Get lost!” Fan Ling glanced up, then paused at a new message on her phone. She stayed silent for a moment, looking at Jiang Ruyi happily stuffing her face, and maintained her silence.
Jiang Ruyi asked, “By the way, are you going to continue your studies in music, or are you going home to inherit the family fortune, Miss? Will we still be able to see each other? Let’s keep in touch! I want to see you.”
“Maybe I’m just getting old, but the passion is gone. Thinking about dealing with people like that horrible band just annoys me. I’m going home to lie flat and relax. Let’s see how long it takes my family to get annoyed with my idleness.” Fan Ling saw Jiang Ruyi’s pitiful look and finally answered her most anticipated question. “If you miss me, video call me! Why are you talking like we’ll never see each other again? And about that ticket I mentioned earlier, we’re still meeting tomorrow, aren’t we?”
“That’s wonderful! Yes, yes, let’s hang out again tomorrow. Or, why don’t you come home with me? Come home and feed cattle with me! Have you ever seen a cow? A live one? I have tons of them at home. Come home with me, and you’ll have all the beef you can eat.”
Jiang Ruyi sounded incredibly sincere, her eyes shining brightly. This greatly moved Fan Ling. “Why are you so sweet? How could your girlfriends ever leave you when you try to keep them like this?”
“Ah, I didn’t try to keep them. I figured if they broke up with me, they didn’t like me anymore. If I clung too much, I’d seem ungracious. At least I have to leave them with the impression of a decent ex-girlfriend. It’s so annoying! I finally forgot about the breakup, so why did you have to bring it up again?”
“Wait, so you’ve just been crying your eyes out only to me? Are you crazy? I’ll tell you what. If you still care about your girlfriend, you should…”
She stopped mid-sentence, startled as if she had an idea. She opened and closed her mouth, unsure whether to speak, and then ate a few bites of food to calm down.
Jiang Ruyi urged her, “Hurry up and tell me! Why are you stalling? Of course, I love my girlfriends! I disagree with everything you just said. Fan Lingling, tell me quickly, don’t keep me hanging!”
“Jiang Ruyi, so you didn’t listen to a single word I just told you, did you? I told you to love someone with sincerity! Sincerity, do you understand? Don’t make people feel like you’re just fooling around. You already have the face of a player. You need to give people a sense of security, understand?”
“I apologize. I just happen to be this gorgeous.” She first addressed the part she liked, then her expression changed. “Also, why do you say I’m not sincere? I gave them my body! Why do they all think I wasn’t sincere?”
As she spoke, Jiang Ruyi’s eyes welled up again. She blinked, and tears started falling, as she choked out, “You… you tell me quickly… You tell me quickly!”
“You crybaby.” Fan Ling saw her adorable, pitiful look, and some of her reservations were instantly thrown out the window. “Since you like crying so much, go crouch outside your girlfriend’s door and cry. Cry loudly. But remember to cry beautifully—no snot or excessive tears. If you cry and beg her to stay, it will definitely work.”
“Don’t you dare lie to me!” Jiang Ruyi said doubtfully, but her hands were already moving quickly. She packed up her things in a flash and headed out without looking back. “You pay! I’ll treat you tomorrow. Bye!”
With that, she scurried away immediately, rushing to her ex-girlfriend’s place while her emotional state was still high.
