After Breaking Up, I Shared an Apartment With My Best Friend and Her Boyfriend (H) - 52
Chapter 52: Wipe the body
“Qiaoqiao?”
Wen Sui saw who it was and lowered the window. She used her hand to cover her hair against the raindrops and called out to her from the back of the car with her mouth open.
Hearing the voice from the front, Chen Qiao walked toward that car in a disheveled state. When she saw Wen Sui’s appearance clearly, she was urged by her, “Get in quickly.”
Chen Qiao glanced at Wen Sui and then looked in the direction behind her until she made brief eye contact with Xu Yanqi. Only then did she pull open the back car door and sit down.
Her raincoat, already soaked through by the rainwater, made the spacious Land Rover’s back seat all wet. Chen Qiao had just thought to apologize and was wondering how to fix it when Xu Yanqi’s hand appeared in front of her, holding out a big pack of tissues.
“Take off the raincoat and wipe your body.”
As Xu Yanqi handed it over, he also gave her a gentle reminder.
Their eyes met in that moment, and Chen Qiao took it in a daze. Then she turned her back to them and slowly took off the raincoat from her body.
Xu Yanqi lifted his gaze and could see from the overhead rearview mirror that the knitted long dress she wore inside and the hair scattered on her shoulders both had a slight damp feeling. At that time, the back seat light shone on her face with its light makeup, showing a kind of elegant and natural beauty.
After Xu Yanqi looked for a couple of moments, he started the car. Once the vehicle was driving on the road, Wen Sui first glanced at Xu Yanqi and then turned her head to look at Chen Qiao behind her.
“Qiaoqiao, are you just going to work now? Then where were you just now?”
Although she asked it very casually, as a best friend who had known Wen Sui for several years, Chen Qiao naturally heard the doubt and probing in it.
Chen Qiao was using the tissues to wipe her hair and the water on her neck. She wiped gently and explained to Wen Sui in a composed way.
“Oh, I just went to pay the property fee and also checked the water bill with the property management. This is an old neighborhood, and everything is still pretty troublesome.”
Xu Yanqi listened to Chen Qiao’s explanation from the front. He deliberately slowed the vehicle’s speed. Actually, when Wen Sui had asked her question just now, he had furrowed his brow a little and was still thinking about how Chen Qiao would answer.
He had not expected that she had already come up with an excuse and made it sound so appropriate.
After Chen Qiao finished explaining, she even took out a paper that looked like an invoice from her bag. “Xu Yanqi, this is the invoice. Let’s split it.”
She deliberately handed it toward Xu Yanqi, and Xu Yanqi also took it very deliberately. He did not even look at it before stuffing it into his shirt pocket.
“Okay, I’ll give you the money after we get out.”
Wen Sui watched this whole scene and suddenly lectured Xu Yanqi. “Hey, Xu Yanqi, how can you be like this? Paying the property fee is something—how could you let Qiaoqiao, a girl, go do it?”
With that said, Xu Yanqi said nothing. He quietly drove his car, his eyes looking calmly ahead without any ripple.
Chen Qiao quickly explained to Wen Sui again. “I insisted on going. Before, when they were fixing the door, I didn’t help, so I just wanted to do something within my ability.”
Then, as she was about to zip up her bag, she deliberately pressed her phone until the screen lit up, very deliberately letting Wen Sui see it.
Chen Qiao took the phone out of her bag, her brows furrowed. “Wen Sui, sorry, I didn’t see your call earlier. What did you need me for?”
Wen Sui looked at her once. “Nothing.”
Then, she pretended to be nonchalant as she turned her head back.
Xu Yanqi raised his hand and pressed the windshield wiper. The vehicle drove at a steady speed on the avenue, and the wiper also swung back and forth on the car glass at the most even speed.
He spoke and asked Chen Qiao, “Where is your workplace?”
Chen Qiao was messaging Xu Jiaming. She told him, [The rain is heavy; I might be late today.]
Xu Jiaming replied to her, [Take your time; it’s fine.]
After she read that message, she looked up and answered Xu Yanqi. “Oh, just drop me at Jiang University. My company is nearby there. Thanks.”
Xu Yanqi heard that. “Okay.”
He quietly opened the navigation on his phone and slowly zoomed in on the map above. Xu Yanqi was not looking at the route—Jiang University’s route was more familiar to him than anything. He just wanted to see which company near Jiang University Chen Qiao was talking about.
