After Breaking Up, I Shared an Apartment With My Best Friend and Her Boyfriend (H) - 53
Chapter 53: Seeing Through His Heart
While waiting at the red light, Wen Sui’s eyes looked ahead. She felt a bit bored and asked, “Xu Yanqi, where are you taking me to eat?”
Xu Yanqi said flatly, “You pick the place.”
Wen Sui flipped through her phone. When she saw a familiar store marked near Jiang University on the map, “How about we go to that one we often went to during university? To reminisce.”
Just as Wen Sui finished saying that sentence, Chen Qiao in the back seat sneezed several times in a row.
It was probably because she had gotten rained on just now and caught a cold.
Xu Yanqi heard her sneeze sounds. He glanced at her through the rearview mirror and then suddenly reached to the drawer on Wen Sui’s side to pull out a box of cold medicine packets from inside, handing it to Chen Qiao’s hand in the back seat.
“It should not be expired. When you get to the company, mix a packet and drink it. This brand works pretty fast for me.”
This was the longest sentence Wen Sui had ever seen Xu Yanqi say to Chen Qiao.
He was as thoughtful as always.
But this time, it was not toward her, Wen Sui.
In that instant, anger rose in Wen Sui’s heart. She turned her head directly to stare at Chen Qiao. Her gaze scanned her from top to bottom, and then the corners of her mouth sank slightly, her face showing the dissatisfaction inside her.
“Qiaoqiao, your makeup today is really not good.”
She held up her own face to show her the makeup on it. “One day when you have time, I must personally teach you.”
After she said that, Xu Yanqi raised his hand to rub the spot between his brows, silently smoothing the ridge that had furrowed there.
Chen Qiao’s clear voice then responded, “Okay, do I need to pay tuition?”
Even Xu Yanqi could hear that Wen Sui was deliberately targeting her, but with that one light and yielding sentence, she easily dissolved the targeting others had against her.
“Of course it’s free. I’m just kidding—you’re my best friend.”
Wen Sui did indeed like how Chen Qiao always yielded; otherwise, she could not have gotten along with her for so long.
Chen Qiao’s personality was just too good. Every time, she was willing to give in to her and accept her targeting.
Every time it reached this point, Wen Sui would actually feel guilty inside. She always thought she had not given people enough face and had joked too much.
So she chose to make up for it again. She said to Chen Qiao with a happy smile that they would go to the mall in the evening to pick out two sets of matching outfits—she would wear one set and give one to Chen Qiao.
Chen Qiao nodded and said okay.
She did not mind her behavior from just now at all.
“We’re here.”
It was Xu Yanqi who spoke to remind Chen Qiao.
When the vehicle stopped at the gate of Jiang University, Chen Qiao looked at the rain outside. It was not as heavy as before; using an umbrella would be enough.
Then she folded the raincoat neatly. After she got out of the car, she extended the umbrella and opened it. Then she greeted Wen Sui, “Wen Sui, I’m heading out first.”
After Wen Sui nodded, that was when Chen Qiao turned to leave. In the instant she turned, the direction her gaze fell seemed to see through Xu Yanqi’s heart, making him gaze at her without meaning to.
But unexpectedly, after Chen Qiao left, although Xu Yanqi took Wen Sui to that store where they could reminisce about the past, it was not like what Wen Sui had imagined. During the meal, she did not see any gentleness or emotion in the man’s eyes at all. What she saw was him using his phone the whole time, holding a work conference call with someone.
Later, after they paid the bill, when Wen Sui suggested she wanted to go to the mall to shop around, she met with Xu Yanqi’s refusal. He used the excuse that he needed to hurry back to finish the design draft.
Once they got home, Wen Sui stepped inside first. She suddenly noticed that the white umbrella Xu Yanqi had placed on the shoe cabinet before was gone.
Her mind instantly flashed back to the eye-catching white umbrella Chen Qiao had used, exactly the same as this missing one.
Wen Sui suddenly thought, could it be that Chen Qiao had come back before? But that did not seem right either—would she not bring an umbrella when she went out to pay the property fee?
Then where was her umbrella?
Even though she felt very angry inside, Wen Sui’s whole body trembled because she felt Chen Qiao might have lied to her. Although she did not know why she would lie to her, she still chose not to call right away to question Chen Qiao.
After she finished showering, Wen Sui lay down on Xu Yanqi’s bed. She reached over to feel the pocket of the jacket the man had placed at the bedside. To keep him from noticing, she casually spoke to Xu Yanqi, who sat in front of the computer focused on drawing.
“Xu Yanqi, what do you think of Chen Qiao as a person?”
But unexpectedly, in that instant, when he heard Chen Qiao’s name, Xu Yanqi turned his body around. “What do you mean, what do I think of her?”
