After Breaking Up, I Shared an Apartment With My Best Friend and Her Boyfriend (H) - 56
Chapter 56: They Are Best Friends
If Xu Yanqi had not met Chen Qiao, if he had not added her on WeChat again, he really would not have remembered something so long ago.
“Yes, Wen Sui knows her. They are best friends.”
Xu Yanqi took a sip of his liquor and answered Xu Jiaming. Xu Jiaming raised his hand to swap out his bottle of foreign liquor and poured himself another glass. He raised his eyebrows.
“What a coincidence?”
Then he instructed a passing waiter to call Chen Qiao over.
Chen Qiao walked over in a soft-textured white dress, her whole body radiating an elegant and captivating aura. She held a delicate violin in her hand, and her entire demeanor made Xu Yanqi’s thoughts drift toward her involuntarily.
As Chen Qiao walked over, she lowered her head to test the sound of the violin in her hand, preparing for the next performance. This was the first time he had seen Chen Qiao playing the violin so seriously from such close range.
It was not until she reached Xu Jiaming that she noticed the man sitting across from him, Xu Yanqi.
“Chen Qiao, this is Xu Yanqi. You two should know each other, right?”
Xu Jiaming introduced her to Chen Qiao. After a slight surprise flickered across her face, she nodded toward him. “Yes, we know each other.”
Their eyes met, sparks flashing in that instant, as if time had frozen. A current passed through the air, stirring an indescribable affection in the exchange of their gazes.
A waiter came over to refill Xu Yanqi’s glass. Then Xu Yanqi looked at the glasses on the table and instructed him to bring another one, but Chen Qiao refused.
“I don’t drink. Even one glass is too much.”
She smiled faintly.
After she said that, Xu Jiaming spoke up for her. “That’s right. Chen Qiao doesn’t drink. Every time we organize a drinking party, she stands by the side sipping a beverage, soberly watching us get completely wasted.”
“Like this. Sorry.”
Xu Yanqi apologized to Chen Qiao. Because Wen Sui had a good tolerance for alcohol, and her friends who also played the violin drank too, he had naturally assumed Chen Qiao drank as well. Anyway, he had not thought she would be someone who touched not a drop.
He had not expected that she really did not touch any.
“It’s fine.”
Then Xu Yanqi handed her the menu. Chen Qiao ordered a drink for herself on her own. When he asked the waiter to add ice, Chen Qiao stopped him.
“Can you not add ice? His stomach can’t handle it right now.”
The “he” Chen Qiao referred to was Xu Jiaming.
After Xu Yanqi paused in surprise, he sent the waiter away. Then he asked Xu Jiaming what was wrong.
Xu Jiaming said casually, “It’s nothing. I just can’t have cold drinks. If I do, I get stomachaches and diarrhea easily.”
Next, Xu Jiaming thanked Chen Qiao for her kind reminder. When it was time for him to go on stage again, he first toasted Xu Yanqi a glass and then instructed him to take good care of Chen Qiao before heading up.
At that moment, only Xu Yanqi and Chen Qiao were left in the booth.
After the waiter brought over the drink Chen Qiao had ordered, Xu Yanqi raised his glass to toast her and casually asked.
“When did you start working here?”
Chen Qiao took a sip of her drink and replied to him in a gentle tone. “Right after graduation.”
Xu Yanqi nodded. After he took a sip of his liquor and looked at Xu Jiaming preparing to sing on stage, he suddenly asked her.
“This place probably doesn’t require overnight shifts, right?”
Chen Qiao followed Xu Yanqi’s line of sight and looked at Xu Jiaming on stage with him. She parted her lips lightly. “I have another job.”
“Working two jobs in one night?”
After Xu Yanqi heard that, he turned to look at her in surprise.
Chen Qiao nodded toward him. “Yes.”
Their eyes met once more. Xu Yanqi felt as if something had plucked at the strings in his heart, sending ripples of emotion through him. He said flatly, just three words. “That’s tough.”
He did not ask her about the other job. Though he was curious, he also knew that if Chen Qiao wanted to tell him, she naturally would.
Then he pulled a folded invoice out of the pocket of his casual pants and gave it to her. “Keep this.”
