After Breaking Up, I Shared an Apartment With My Best Friend and Her Boyfriend (H) - 58
Chapter 58: How About Coming to Sit in My Car?
Xu Yanqi didn’t answer for a long time. His lips pressed tight, and his eyes went blank, as if the words she had just blurted out left him unable to calm down at all.
Chen Qiao lowered her gaze a bit. She picked up the drink on the table and toasted him, saying word by word, “When I said I liked you before, don’t feel any pressure about it.”
As soon as she finished, Xu Yanqi nodded. “Yeah.”
He reached out and picked up the empty cup in front of him, clinked it with hers. “No pressure.”
Just as he was about to bring it to his mouth, Chen Qiao reminded him, “You have no drink left.”
Xu Yanqi glanced at it, then realized he had raised an empty cup to her. In that instant, he felt a strange sensation. His hand gripped the empty cup without moving, until Chen Qiao kindly poured him some wine and gave him a little toast.
“I’m going on stage.”
She glanced at the stage, then at him.
For some reason, Xu Yanqi couldn’t meet her eyes when they locked on him. He could only choose to look away.
“Okay.”
After he said that and waited for Chen Qiao to leave, he picked up the glass of foreign wine she had just filled for him and poured it straight down his throat.
After Chen Qiao went on stage, Xu Yanqi sat below it, drinking absentmindedly. His eyes fixed on the stage, but he didn’t put any real attention into it.
Until his phone rang from a call. Xu Yanqi answered, and his voice carried a charming tone as he spoke to the person. “Some things are hard to explain.”
He heard the broad timbre of the man’s voice on the other end. “Back when Zhou Xian cheated, you told me not to look for her anymore.”
The man’s voice held a force that couldn’t be ignored as he countered, “Now it’s your turn to cheat.”
Xu Yanqi’s eyes darkened. He really couldn’t answer the question the man raised, so he just pressed his lips together a little. “Yeah, it’s hard to explain.”
After the call ended, Chen Qiao had just finished one song. She went back to the backstage area to check her phone and saw the text Li Zhen had sent her.
“Don’t come over tonight.”
She was just about to reply when she turned her eyes and saw Xu Yanqi appear backstage.
The man had drunk a lot, but he seemed to hold his liquor well. He still walked with steady steps, one after another, toward her, in his own unique rhythm.
“Chen Qiao.”
He hadn’t even reached her yet when he called her name and asked, “Where’s Xu Jiaming?”
Chen Qiao actually didn’t know where Xu Jiaming had gone either. She raised her hand to point in one direction, but then she heard Xu Yanqi’s low and strong voice tell her, “I’m leaving. Help me tell Xu Jiaming.”
Chen Qiao nodded. Then she put her phone in her pocket and naturally said to him, “Let me walk you out.”
Xu Yanqi had never thought Chen Qiao would offer to walk him out. In that moment, his mood felt just like Jiang City’s unpredictable weather—raining one second, then suddenly stopping.
He and Chen Qiao walked side by side. The two of them stayed quiet, with no words at all, but it didn’t feel awkward.
This was the first time Xu Yanqi had met such a unique girl.
Her personality had some kind of magic to it that drew him in deeply.
Xu Yanqi’s car was parked in the B1 parking lot, so the two of them didn’t go to the door. They just took the direct elevator down from inside the bar.
When the elevator doors on B1 opened, Xu Yanqi stepped out. Chen Qiao stayed inside. “You called a driver, right? Be safe on the way.”
Xu Yanqi nodded. He stood outside and watched as Chen Qiao reached to press the close button. In that instant, a flicker of anxiety showed in his eyes.
Chen Qiao kept her head down, just about to press it, when Xu Yanqi’s brows suddenly furrowed tight. He called out to her. “Chen Qiao.”
Chen Qiao paused. “Yeah?”
“Wait.”
Xu Yanqi stepped over and pressed the up button outside the elevator to keep the doors from closing.
“Where are you going for your next job? Is it safe?”
He took a shallow breath as he asked that question, his heart pounding hard, and he couldn’t look straight into her eyes.
Because he didn’t know why he had called her to wait. He didn’t even know his own motive. It seemed like just an instinct not to let her leave so soon.
So he had stopped her in a panic, but he didn’t know what to say to her, so he just grabbed a random question to stall her.
Chen Qiao didn’t answer where she was going, but she did answer him. “It’s safe.”
When she saw that Xu Yanqi stayed in place after hearing the answer, without moving or speaking, Chen Qiao thought he wanted a more specific reply.
Or rather, he really hoped she would tell him about her second job.
After Chen Qiao lowered her gaze a little, she told him, “My other job is at my brother’s place.”
As soon as she said it, Xu Yanqi frowned. “Your real brother?”
After all, it was a night job, so Xu Yanqi wanted to confirm with her.
Chen Qiao nodded. “Yeah.”
With nothing more to say, Xu Yanqi could only pull back his hand from the elevator button. He pressed his thin lips together a bit and said, “Okay.”
Then he took a step away, but after just two steps, he turned back around.
This time, he finally got the words out. “How about coming to sit in my car? There should still be some time before your next set.”
