Chapter 17: Not Very Proper or Refined
Xu Yanqi’s phone screen displayed Chen Qiao’s WeChat friend request, which she instantly passed. He unintentionally glanced at her phone and saw their previous chat history on her side.
Chen Qiao nodded. “Yeah, we added each other before, but then you deleted me.”
After she spoke, Xu Yanqi couldn’t recall a thing. His throat felt dry. “When did that happen?”
Chen Qiao slightly lowered her gaze. “A few years ago, during summer break, at a small bar in the university town. Back then, you wanted to get a cocktail for Wen Sui. I was working there as a bartender.”
Chen Qiao remembered that time. She and Xu Yanqi hadn’t met yet, and Wen Sui had just gotten to know Xu Yanqi. They were in the flirting stage, each harboring a faint attraction for the other.
Chen Qiao recalled it clearly. Ever since she learned that the boyfriend Wen Sui was about to date was Xu Yanqi, whom she’d seen at the bar, she often noticed the frequent eye contact between them. Love quietly blossomed between the two.
“There was an event at the bar. You scanned my WeChat to order and then gave me a bad review.”
“I still don’t know the reason for that bad review. You just deleted me after.”
“It even cost me my summer part-time job.”
As Chen Qiao slowly recounted the story, a deep flicker of shock passed through Xu Yanqi’s eyes.
He uncomfortably raised his hand and slightly loosened his shirt collar.
The light from the ceiling in the hallway slipped through his open collar, revealing half of his collarbone. The other half remained hidden in the shadow of his collar.
“The reason I gave a bad review was that your bar encouraged customers to add WeChat for private marketing.”
He explained seriously. “I wasn’t targeting you back then. It was just about the bar.”
Xu Yanqi suddenly remembered their first encounter. For some reason, he couldn’t recall much about her face at the time.
He also remembered that after adding her on WeChat and placing his order, he checked her Moments. They were full of fresh, natural selfies and daily life photos.
She wasn’t the most striking type, but she wasn’t unattractive either. She didn’t stand out as particularly unique, nor did she instantly catch the eye.
He recalled that when Wen Sui formally introduced Chen Qiao to him, his first impression of her was that she had a bland, unremarkable personality.
In their interactions, she wasn’t very proper or refined, but she wasn’t overly cheerful or lively either.
She always spoke with polite gentleness and acted with calm, measured restraint. You couldn’t pinpoint any flaws in her, but she didn’t have any standout qualities that grabbed attention either.
She seemed like someone without much personality.
Very bland.
Xu Yanqi’s impression of her was like encountering a decent property listing. You knew the place was fine, with a good location, but when you walked in, it lacked stunning colors or finely crafted decor.
It was just ordinary.
At first glance, it was hard to truly like that property.
Wen Sui, on the other hand, was different. Her presence was obvious and upfront. Especially since Xu Yanqi, in his senior year, had only met Wen Sui then. Honestly, when it came to dating, he had no interest in college girls still in school.
He thought college girls lacked the depth of thought to connect with him.
Though he was only two years ahead of Wen Sui and Chen Qiao.
But after meeting Wen Sui, he realized she was different. She had some real-world experience.
Since starting university, she constantly performed gigs outside, meeting and networking with all sorts of people.
She could balance her studies and her work at the same time.
He believed that being with someone like her wouldn’t tire her out, nor would it tire him.
After all, their minds were on the same wavelength. They could understand each other to some extent.
“It’s fine.”
Chen Qiao said, “We’re getting to know each other again now.”
She calmly edited his contact name and showed it to him.
Xu Yanqi saw the name she gave him: Xu Yanqi.
Not “Wen Sui’s boyfriend.”
Xu Yanqi’s gaze paused. “Mmm.”
Good. She thought the same way he did.
So Xu Yanqi quickly added her name too: Chen Qiao.
