Chapter 46: Liking Doesn’t Do Much
Chen Qiao didn’t refuse. She smiled, “Okay, you cook this time, and I’ll treat you next time.”
She paused and added, “When I get my paycheck.”
Xu Yanqi felt a warmth in his heart. It was like seeing sunlight break through dark clouds when his mood was heavy, catching a glimpse of kindness in her smile.
Xu Yanqi replied, “Okay.”
He buttoned his loose shirt and headed to the kitchen. Chen Qiao followed, placing her raincoat at the entrance. She pulled a chair from the dining table, sat down, and waited for him to cook.
Xu Yanqi was surprised. She didn’t politely offer to help in the kitchen but sat comfortably at the table, playing with her phone.
After rinsing rice and plugging in the rice cooker, Xu Yanqi squinted, thought for a moment, and asked, “Chen Qiao, what do you do for work?”
His voice was gentle.
Chen Qiao paused and said, “It’s not a great job.”
Xu Yanqi pressed the rice cooker button, started washing vegetables, and glanced at her, looking her up and down.
“High-paying?”
Chen Qiao pursed her lips. “Pretty high-paying.”
After she spoke, Xu Yanqi stayed quiet.
Chen Qiao asked, “Why ask about this?”
She thought Xu Yanqi might have a bad opinion of her late-night job, like Lin Yizheng did, but he said, “A good job is one of two things: either high-paying or in an industry and role you like.”
He stopped the water from washing vegetables and turned to look at her. “You’ve got one of those, so it’s a good job.”
Chen Qiao looked up, surprised by his view of her work. “You’re kind of right.”
Clearly, he knew her job was late at night, high-paying, and something she wouldn’t share details about, so most people would think it wasn’t a good job.
But Xu Yanqi disagreed with her saying it wasn’t a good job.
He said, “High-paying, that makes it a good job.”
“Do you like your job now?”
Xu Yanqi took the beef from the delivery bag, washed it, and started slicing it carefully while asking her.
Chen Qiao answered, “I don’t really like or dislike it.”
Xu Yanqi paused his cutting at her words, then heard her say, “What’s more confusing than liking or not liking is that I don’t even know what I like.”
She said it calmly.
Xu Yanqi sensed something in her calm tone. “So, you want to focus on surviving first, then liking?”
His words reminded her of something Wen Sui once said: “If you have money, choose what you like. If you don’t, go for high-paying. Qiao Qiao, your choice is fine.”
But Wen Sui didn’t know that, on one hand, Chen Qiao was focused on surviving, and on the other, “I always felt liking doesn’t do much.”
Chen Qiao spoke, not addressing Xu Yanqi’s point about surviving but his point about liking.
“Liking doesn’t always make life exciting.”
She said, “You like desserts, but will opening a bakery make you successful? Happy? Able to keep it running?”
“Obviously not.”
She not only denied it but added, “Like, Xu Yanqi, you like Wen Sui, but your relationship is still fragile.”
“A relationship with just liking, without effort, will die.”
Xu Yanqi was shocked that she so bluntly pointed out the issues between him and Wen Sui.
But oddly, he wasn’t angry. He turned, his gaze calm as he looked at her.
“So, to you, liking is a very practical matter.”
