- Chapter 17 - The Fifth Outfit
The charity gala hosted by the Qiu family attracted countless prestigious families every year. Receiving an invitation was seen as a symbol of social standing. Those of slightly lesser status racked their brains trying to get in, hoping to use the opportunity to build connections.
This kind of banquet was like a grand dinner gathering for the elite circles of the capital. Naturally, the pampered young masters and ladies were all brought along. Because of this, the charity gala had another nickname: “The Capital’s Blind Date Fair.”
At first, the beautiful and refined Omegas all came targeting the young masters cherished by the Fu and Qiu families. But since Fu Yuan had basically stopped appearing in public, they shifted their focus to other Alphas from powerful families.
Among them, the Alphas most favored by Omegas were none other than Zhao Kuo, heir to the Zhao Group, and Xu Ancheng, the next successor of the Xu Group. While the Xu family wasn’t quite on par with the Zhao family, they had overseas businesses, and Xu Ancheng himself was far easier to get along with than Zhao Kuo.
Tonight’s banquet had Omegas waiting with eager anticipation—Zhao Kuo had returned from abroad, and Xu Ancheng, who’d missed the last event, was present as well. What they didn’t expect, however, was that these two dazzling heirs ignored them completely and instead surrounded Fu Su.
Everyone in the capital knew Fu Su was an illegitimate child.
His Omega father had a calculating nature—forcing the official wife to death in order to rise in status. By some means, he even gained a portion of Fu Corporation’s shares and the support of the Fu family patriarch, giving him enough influence to stand toe-to-toe with the current family head, Fu Yuan.
A delicate-looking Omega rolled his eyes at Fu Su.
“A homewrecker’s son is really different—thick-skinned like a city wall. After driving the legitimate heir to death, he still dares to show up at the Qiu family’s charity gala.”
His companion tugged at his sleeve, whispering,
“Don’t say that. Even if he’s illegitimate, the Fu family shares he holds are real. My father says he could very well take power in the future.”
Another companion sighed.
“But really, he is gorgeous. That cold aura is mesmerizing. Didn’t you see all the Alphas staring at him? It’s only because of those two by his side that they don’t dare approach. He’s like a born heartthrob.”
The Omega bit his lip. He couldn’t refute that—Fu Su’s looks truly were exceptional.
Still, frustration burned in his chest. He thought, Hurry up, someone—anyone—come put this illegitimate brat in his place!
It was at this moment that Ji Xia entered the banquet hall, arm-in-arm with Chen Xi. Though he didn’t know about that Omega’s silent prayer, he immediately felt the countless gazes turning on him.
Feeling uneasy, he whispered,
“Dr. Chen, why are they all looking at me?”
Chen Xi’s voice carried a smile.
“Because you’re too dazzling.”
Ji Xia thought to himself, It’s not me who’s dazzling—it’s the system’s doing.
He’d given the system the keywords “charity gala” and “mermaid,” and it had chosen this modified mermaid-style outfit for him. His cufflinks and tie clip were seashell-shaped—very cute.
Meanwhile, Xu Ancheng was racking his brains trying to outmaneuver Zhao Kuo for the best position beside Fu Su. But Zhao Kuo was too domineering, and Xu Ancheng always ended up on the losing side. This time again, Zhao Kuo lured Fu Su’s attention with a topic on investments—an area Xu Ancheng wasn’t familiar with—leaving him to stand aside like a decorative vase.
Zhao Kuo even cast him a mocking look.
Irritation flared in Xu Ancheng’s chest. He downed a glass of champagne, and when his gaze wandered across the hall, it suddenly froze.
There, under the refracted glow of the crystal chandeliers, stood a young Omega, glittering like light itself.
The youth’s slightly long hair looked soft to the touch, his small face—barely the size of a palm—tilted at just the right angle, revealing eyes that shone faintly blue, dreamy and romantic.
A sapphire stud glittered in his right ear, dazzling under the lights.
His sky-blue suit set off his skin to appear even more fair and radiant, while the flowing lines of the tailoring emphasized the straight length of his legs.
From every angle, he looked like a little prince stepped straight out of a master painter’s dream.
Sensing his gaze, the Omega turned, meeting his eyes, and curved his brows into a smile.
In that instant, Xu Ancheng forgot to breathe.
He realized how narrow-minded he had been before—he had built a fish tank, hoping to trap his dream mermaid within it. But he had overlooked the truth: mermaids came from the ocean.
All he could do was devote his love, give everything, and wait—
Wait for his mermaid to be moved, willing to leave the vast sea, to transform his beautiful tail into human legs, and walk to his side.
And perhaps he was lucky—because without doing anything, the mermaid prince had already come to him, holding a glass of wine, approaching step by step.
It was Ji Xia’s first time at such a banquet. Without Chen Xi at his side, even walking felt unsteady. Still, for the sake of his mission, he forced himself to overcome his nerves.
He stopped at Xu Ancheng’s side, offering a polite smile.
“President Xu, what a coincidence to meet you again.”
As the Omega drew close, Xu Ancheng seemed to feel a cool breath of sea air brushing him, which only deepened the illusion in his mind.
He was utterly convinced now—this was the mermaid prince who had come ashore for him.
Enthralled, he said,
“Baby, this is fate.”
Ji Xia: ………
Xu Ancheng’s gaze and tone made him uncomfortable, but he pushed on, explaining his purpose.
“I’d like to talk to you about that piece of land. Do you have time now?”
Xu Ancheng’s excitement surged.
“Of course. My time is all yours, baby.”
Meanwhile, Fu Su, still engaged in conversation with Zhao Kuo, noticed Zhao Kuo becoming distracted, glancing repeatedly to the side. Irritated, Fu Su finally followed his gaze—
—and saw Ji Xia chatting happily with Xu Ancheng. His brows furrowed. He raised a hand, gesturing for Zhao Kuo to pause, and called out,
“Ancheng.”
Xu Ancheng turned his head, but unlike before, he didn’t immediately rush over obediently. Fu Su’s dissatisfaction grew.
“I want a glass of Sauternes from Bordeaux, but they don’t have it here.”
But stripped of his “mermaid filter,” Xu Ancheng felt little toward Fu Su. He simply spread his hands.
“That’s a pity.”
And with that, he turned back around, as if Fu Su didn’t exist. The change from his former attitude was stark. Facing Ji Xia again, he said warmly,
“As long as you want it, that land will naturally go to the Fu Corporation. But, baby, I hope you’ll give me a chance to pursue you. Three days. Date me for three days, and I’ll sign the contract.”
Fu Su, already irritated from being ignored, now heard this and nearly lost his composure. His voice rose, sharp with rebuke.
“Ancheng, you already promised to give that land to me!”
Xu Ancheng didn’t care.
“I was going to give it to my mermaid prince. But now—you’re not him anymore.”
The delicate Omega who had earlier mocked Fu Su saw him publicly embarrassed for the first time, his cold pride shattered, and couldn’t hold back a laugh.
Fu Su, spoiled since childhood and adored by nearly everyone—save Fu Yuan—had never been rejected by an Alpha before. To be denied, and even mocked, was intolerable to his proud self-esteem.
His frosty gaze darkened with anger as he looked at Ji Xia, sneering,
“Didn’t expect you to be so skilled. Using your resemblance to me to flirt around everywhere.”
Ji Xia had thought well of Fu Su before—his mermaid-like look had been breathtaking.
But the disdain in his tone made Ji Xia’s good impression plummet to zero. With cheeks puffed in anger, he retorted,
“I’m talking business with President Xu. Don’t make baseless accusations.”
Zhao Kuo cut in mockingly.
“Dressed like that to talk business? What kind of business is that?”
Fu Su sneered in turn.
“Wasn’t it also for ‘business’ when you used your pheromones to seduce Chen Chaofei, causing his downfall?”
Hearing this, Xu Ancheng frowned. That incident had happened at his own nightclub, though Fu Yuan had covered everything up, leaving him in the dark. There were several versions of the rumor, but every version involved an Omega.
Sadness clouded his face. He asked,
“Xiaxia, is it true—you seduced Chen Chaofei with your pheromones?”
Chen Xi had been watching Ji Xia closely the entire evening. After the last incident, he dared not be careless.
Sensing things taking a bad turn—especially with Fu Su involved—his expression hardened, and he prepared to step in. But just then, a hand landed on his shoulder.
Startled, he turned, only to meet a pair of deep, dark eyes. His heart lurched so violently he nearly dropped his glass.
Ji Xia couldn’t understand how someone as beautiful as Fu Su could twist the truth so brazenly. Furious yet tongue-tied, he stammered out the only words he could manage:
“You’re lying.”
It wasn’t his fault he lacked words—his life until now had been filled with nothing but endless work, leaving him little chance for social sparring. He simply wasn’t as sharp-tongued as Fu Su.
Fu Su gave a cold laugh.
“Whether you seduced Chen Chaofei with your pheromones—we only need to check your gland for bite marks, don’t we?”
Zhao Kuo smirked wickedly.
“Let’s head to the lounge. Let me check. No marks, and you’re cleared. If you don’t dare—well, that proves your guilt.”
Xu Ancheng stayed silent, but his gaze was chilling. Hair could hide an Omega’s glands, but in casual movement, they often showed. And earlier, he’d caught a glimpse—there was a bite mark on Ji Xia’s gland.
His eyes filled with disgust.
Even without forcing Ji Xia to expose himself in public, just suggesting it was already deeply disrespectful. Yet in this moment, none of them seemed to see it as offensive.
Their stares bore into Ji Xia—some gleaming with secret excitement, others curling in contemptuous sneers. Like wolves watching a trapped prey, they locked on him.
Under their gaze, Ji Xia’s back went cold. He couldn’t cope with such a situation. With more and more eyes gathering on him, he felt suffocated, like the crowd’s scrutiny was wrapping tightly around his chest.
Fear welled up inside him. Without realizing, he took two steps back—
—straight into the chest of the person standing behind him.
