- Chapter 24 - Start of Paywall
In a daze, Ji Xia heard lively voices and laughter. The voices were soft, crisp, and pleasant to the ear.
His eyelashes fluttered slightly, and after a while, he finally managed to open his eyes with effort. The lingering effects of the drugs made his head ache terribly. He furrowed his brows, sat still for a moment to regain some focus, and then slowly sat up.
“You’re awake!”
A sweet voice sounded. Ji Xia turned his head to see a sweet-looking Omega sitting on the bed opposite him.
The Omega was eating small pieces of honeydew melon with a fork and smiled brightly at him, speaking in a friendly, casual tone:
“You were already asleep when I came in, and no matter how I called you, you wouldn’t wake up. It’s already afternoon, the event is about to start soon. Hurry and grab something to eat.”
Ji Xia stared at him blankly for a while, then glanced around in confusion.
This was a small room with four single beds lined up. On the other two beds sat two other young and beautiful Omegas. While touching up their makeup, both of them cast curious looks at Ji Xia.
After struggling to recall, Ji Xia finally remembered what had happened before he fainted. His expression turned slightly panicked, and he asked:
“Where is this? Who are you?”
His voice was raspy, as if scraped by sandpaper.
The sweet Omega replied, “Did you sleep so long you’ve gone stupid? This is the Royal Mona Lisa! Let me introduce myself. My name’s Xu Le, I’m a stylist—just call me Lele. That’s Zhang Yi, a bartender. And that’s Wen He, he plays music. What about you?”
The name Royal Mona Lisa rang a bell for Ji Xia, but he couldn’t remember where he’d heard it before.
Still groggy and unable to think clearly, he was distracted by Xu Le’s chatter and answered, “My name is Ji Xia. I’m a…” He paused briefly, “…a baker.”
Xu Le, with his lively personality, looked Ji Xia up and down openly and laughed:
“Wow, Summer, I never would’ve guessed you’re a baker! I was just saying to Wen He that you totally look like an artist—like a painter. By the way, spill it—who’s your target tonight?”
Ji Xia’s head still throbbed. He rubbed his temples, confused:
“Target?”
Xu Le assumed he was being secretive, but Ji Xia’s bewildered expression looked far too genuine to be an act. So he explained:
“An Alpha, of course! Isn’t the whole point of getting on this ship to catch the eye of some powerful Alpha, so we can rise up like phoenixes? My target is President Jiao. I did my research—he’s super generous with his lovers. If I could stay with him for a few years, I’d be set for life.”
From the bed, Zhang Yi, who was drawing his brows, let out a sneer:
“Don’t be so naive. Out of the 188 elite Alphas on this ship, Jiao Mubai is at the very top. Don’t waste your time daydreaming.”
But Xu Le didn’t care in the slightest. He had spent a fortune to board this ship for the sake of his dream—why not dream big?
He retorted:
“Then who’s your target, Yi-ge? Don’t tell me it’s the triple-S-tiered, impossible-level President Fu? …Ji Xia, what’s wrong? You look awful.”
The moment Ji Xia heard the name Jiao Mubai, his already pale face drained of all color, ashen like death itself.
That name was far from unfamiliar to him. In the dream world, after countless failed escape attempts from Chao Fei’s house, he had finally managed to slip away one night—only to collapse on the road and be taken in by a kindhearted Beta auntie. But after recovering, he was sold to an underground auction house… where Jiao Mubai bought him.
Jiao Mubai kept many Omegas. He loved cosplay, forcing his Omegas to dress in different costumes every day.
If the outfit pleased him, they’d be tormented ruthlessly. If not, they were punished—locked into a pitch-black room where nothing could be seen or heard.
It was a terrifying experience, enough to drive someone insane.
Ji Xia’s heart sank. Sure enough, he had been dragged back into the plot again.
His body trembled slightly, but he still forced his sluggish mind to think of a solution. After a while, he fumbled around his clothes in panic. Finding nothing, he looked up at the Omegas across from him and asked:
“Do you have a phone? Can I borrow it to make a call?”
Luckily, he had memorized Mr. Fu’s number. As long as he could contact Mr. Fu, there was still hope.
Xu Le looked surprised.
“Summer, don’t tell me you got knocked out and smuggled aboard? The Royal Mona Lisa doesn’t allow electronic devices. The only phones here are internal lines.”
Ji Xia’s heart dropped. If he couldn’t contact Mr. Fu, he couldn’t escape. That meant he would be swept along by the plot, disfigured, and die miserably on the streets.
Wen He closed his makeup kit and added to Xu Le’s words:
“From my experience, someone like Fu Yuan may be difficult to win over, but if you do succeed, no matter what kind of Omega you are, you’d be his legitimate consort. And if you bore him children, both Fu’s and Qiu’s fortunes would belong to them.”
Xu Le clasped his cheeks dreamily, then suddenly thought of something:
“I heard the Fu family and Qiu family hate each other and don’t get along at all.”
Wen He replied,
“But the heir of the Qiu family is still President Fu. If he had a child, both family empires would belong to that kid.”
Zhang Yi poured cold water over them.
“You two are too naive. Do you know how many Omegas boarded this ship? Do you know how many will join tonight’s event? Those two men are the absolute elite among elites. Especially Fu Yuan—he’s way beyond your reach. This is my second time aboard, so let me give you some advice: don’t aim too high. If you can hook anyone out of the 188 Alphas, that’s already a victory…”
Ji Xia suddenly raised his voice to cut him off:
“Mr. Fu is here too?!”
Zhang Yi gave him a speechless look, unimpressed with this pale-faced Omega, and mocked:
“What, your target is Fu Yuan too?”
Ji Xia didn’t care what “targets” they were talking about. All he knew was that if Mr. Fu was here, he still had a chance. He nodded firmly.
As long as he could reach Mr. Fu, he could escape Jiao Mubai’s grasp.
Zhang Yi snorted.
“You’re not bad-looking, but compared to the hundreds of other dolled-up Omegas here, do you really think Fu Yuan is blind enough to choose you?”
Ji Xia bit his lip. He had forgotten—Mr. Fu despised him. He didn’t know if Mr. Fu would even be willing to take him away.
Xu Le nibbled on a piece of melon, silently agreeing with Zhang Yi.
“Honestly, for people like us, if we can hook anyone out of the 188, we’d be set for life. Summer, we can’t just cling to one tree.”
But Ji Xia shook his head firmly.
“No. It can only be Mr. Fu.”
Zhang Yi rolled his eyes. He had never seen someone so clueless. This Omega acted like all the Alphas were lining up to chase after him—how big could his ego be?
Even Xu Le was starting to think Ji Xia might be a little touched in the head from sleeping too long. But since it was his choice, Xu Le didn’t press further.
Wen He gave Ji Xia a thoughtful once-over. Indeed, the Omega had striking looks, but his complexion was poor. Without some decoration, it would be hard to outshine the others.
Still, Wen He thought, having more friends was no bad thing. If Ji Xia really did catch the eye of a big shot, maybe he could benefit too.
“Ji Xia, your complexion’s awful. Let me put some makeup on you. That might give you a better chance.”
But Ji Xia shook his head.
“Thank you, but there’s no need. I’ll be fine as I am.”
Wen He decided Ji Xia was far too overconfident and gave up trying to get close.
At that moment, someone knocked on the door. Wen He, being closest, opened it.
A man in a black suit stood outside, reminding them it was time to head down to the seventh floor.
From their chatter earlier, Ji Xia already knew they were about to join an event—one Mr. Fu would also attend. Without gathering anything, he stood up and followed Xu Le out of the room.
At the elevator, the doors happened to open. Xu Le stepped in first, Ji Xia right behind him, with Zhang Yi and Wen He squeezing in as well.
But as soon as they entered, the already packed elevator blared an alarm—an icy electronic voice announcing it was overweight.
Almost all the Omegas inside turned their eyes toward Zhang Yi and Wen He. Knowing how important it was to reach the seventh floor early, Zhang Yi immediately shoved at Wen He.
“You were a step behind me. Wait for the next one.”
Wen He refused, and the two began tussling in the cramped space. Other Omegas grumbled, demanding they both get out.
In the chaos, Ji Xia quietly stepped out. The alarm immediately ceased.
Zhang Yi and Wen He both turned their heads away, refusing to look at him.
Xu Le grew anxious. They hadn’t known each other long, but they were roommates and would spend the next seven days together. His kind nature wouldn’t allow him to just abandon Ji Xia—especially when the other looked so unwell.
Just as the doors were about to close, Xu Le suddenly reached out, pulled them open, and stepped out too.
He said, “Too crowded. I’ll wait for the next one.”
Ji Xia nodded at him.
But the next two elevators that came were also packed. They had no choice but to keep waiting.
Out of the blue, Xu Le sighed:
“I spent all my savings just to get on this ship. If I leave empty-handed, I’ll be starving on the streets.”
Ji Xia replied seriously, “I can give you some bread to eat.”
Xu Le smiled faintly, but it was a forced smile.
“Alright, it’s a deal. I’ll eat so much of your bread you’ll go bankrupt.”
Ji Xia looked horrified.
“After I bought my little scooter, I barely had money left for ingredients. I can’t give you too much bread. Maybe once I earn a bit more…”
Xu Le burst into genuine laughter.
“Summer, you’re so adorable.”
It took them nearly half an hour before they finally managed to squeeze into an elevator. Inside, only a few people remained. Soon, the doors opened on the seventh floor.
The seventh floor was a luxurious, sprawling cloakroom. The Omegas who had arrived earlier were already dressed and busy adorning themselves.
The racks and shelves, once filled with clothes and accessories, had been picked almost clean. Only scraps remained. The latecomers scrambled desperately to grab what was left.
Before Ji Xia could react, Xu Le tugged him forward. They each managed to snatch a set.
Ji Xia noticed the outfit he grabbed had a hole—clearly cut by scissors. The others had torn or damaged clothes as well, but Ji Xia’s was at least the least ruined.
Many Omegas’ eyes brimmed with tears, but with no choice, they forced themselves to put the clothes on.
Xu Le, however, just stood there motionless. When Ji Xia went to check, he saw Xu Le crying—his outfit was ripped to shreds, completely unwearable.
Ji Xia took it from him, shoved his own set into Xu Le’s hands, and said:
“You wear this one.”
Xu Le’s nose was red as he asked,
“What about you?”
Ji Xia said calmly,
“Don’t worry about me. I’ll figure something out.”
At that moment, the suited man appeared again at the door, urging the Omegas to hurry into the event hall.
Ji Xia pushed Xu Le forward.
“Go on ahead.”
Then, holding the shredded clothes, he slipped into another changing room.
Sitting on a low stool inside, Ji Xia asked his system:
“Tong, can you fix this outfit?”
【Sorry, Host. I don’t have repair functions. But I can search the wardrobe for a similar outfit.】
Ji Xia: “Alright. Find me something similar. Nothing too flashy—make it plain, dull-colored, low-profile. Professional-style.”
【Understood.】
