- Chapter 31 - Ji Xia is Poisoned
“Mr. Fu.”
Ji Xia called out, his heart flinching under the Alpha’s sharp gaze, and he slowly moved closer.
Fu Yuan’s keen eyes scanned him up and down, a slight frown on his brow, and he asked, “Where did you go?”
Although Mr. Fu’s tone was light, Ji Xia could sense that Mr. Fu was a little angry.
He shrunk his neck and lowered his head slightly, like a primary school student who had done something wrong, and explained, “I was too absorbed in watching the performance just now and didn’t keep up with you. Then, I… I thought I’d wait for you in the back, and then… then I ran into a friend I knew before, and accidentally fell into the pool back there.”
Fu Yuan handed the paper bag in his hand to Ji Xia and said, “I just told you I was going to buy you a dessert.”
Ji Xia, whose mind was completely preoccupied with the iron flower display and hadn’t heard what Mr. Fu said at all, guiltily rubbed the tip of his nose. He took the still-warm pastries and whispered, “Thank you, Mr. Fu.”
Just then, a cool breeze blew by, and Ji Xia couldn’t help but sneeze twice. His body also started to feel a little cold.
Fu Yuan took the paper bag back and said, “Let’s go. Go back and change your clothes.”
Ji Xia nodded.
He looked back and saw that Xu Le had left sometime earlier.
As soon as they returned to the room, Ji Xia grabbed the same pajamas from yesterday and headed into the bathroom. Someone had delivered some clothes suitable for him to wear today, but they’d forgotten to send pajamas, so he could only continue to wear Mr. Fu’s.
He came out after showering, it was just past nine. Ji Xia wasn’t that sleepy, and seeing Mr. Fu working on the sofa, he picked up the cruise ship’s seven-day activity brochure from a nearby table to look at.
He was lying on the bed, bare-legged, with his two fair feet lightly swinging.
In a moment, he sneezed several times again, and his body started to feel cold.
Fu Yuan looked up from his work and said, “Go to the medicine cabinet and take a packet of cold granules to prevent catching a cold.”
Ji Xia really disliked bitter things, and besides, a cold could be cured with a good night’s sleep; there was no need for medicine.
He burrowed under the covers, revealing only his large eyes, with a hint of pleading, and said, “Mr. Fu, I won’t catch a cold. My feet were just a little cold just now, and I’ll be fine once I cover myself with the blanket.”
Fu Yuan looked at him for a while, withdrew his gaze, and said nothing more.
Ji Xia breathed a sigh of relief. He really didn’t feel uncomfortable. After browsing the activity list for the next day, he circled a few interesting ones and went over to ask Mr. Fu if they could go to these tomorrow.
Mr. Fu readily agreed.
Ji Xia fiddled around for a while longer, felt sleepy, put away the brochure, and asked, “Mr. Fu, are you going to sleep?”
Fu Yuan said, “I have quite a bit of piled-up work from the last couple of days, so I’ll be busy a bit late tonight. You go to sleep first.”
Ji Xia felt that Mr. Fu was very hardworking, but he couldn’t help in any way, so he could only say, “Then I’ll go to sleep first, Mr. Fu, good night.”
The next morning, Ji Xia woke up to the sound of rushing water coming from the bathroom.
As soon as he sat up, he felt dizzy and extremely uncomfortable. Touching his forehead, it felt a little hot.
Ji Xia’s dazed mind processed this for a moment before realizing he seemed to have a fever.
Getting a fever right now was not a good thing. If today’s outings were ruined, he didn’t want to spoil Mr. Fu’s enjoyment.
Ji Xia glanced at the tightly closed bathroom door, threw off the blanket, and quietly got out of bed. He opened the glass door under the TV cabinet very carefully. He saw two medicine chests, one large and one small. After only a brief hesitation, he took the smaller one.
Ji Xia felt guilty, like a thief, and struggled for a while to open the medicine chest.
It turned out that this small medicine chest only contained two identical bottles of medicine, both with characters he couldn’t read. He stared wide-eyed for a long time but couldn’t identify a single one he knew.
Just as he was about to take out the large medicine chest to look at it as well, a muffled thud came from the bathroom. Startled, his hand trembled, and he nearly dropped the medicine box on the floor.
Fortunately, after holding his breath and waiting for a moment, Mr. Fu didn’t come out immediately, but the sound of the water had stopped.
Ji Xia was in a hurry. He didn’t want Mr. Fu to find out he had a fever. Mr. Fu had reminded him yesterday, and he had confidently assured him he wouldn’t catch a cold. He didn’t want Mr. Fu to think he was troublesome.
Disregarding everything else, Ji Xia directly opened the already unsealed medicine jar, poured out three pills, and dry-swallowed them.
A normal person would never take medicine randomly, as that is extremely dangerous.
But Ji Xia was not a normal person. More precisely, Ji Xia’s upbringing was abnormal. When he was little, if Ji Xia had a headache or fever, he was simply told to drink water, then tossed onto the bed to sleep for a day.
If it was serious, with a high fever, he would take some medicine.
But Ji Chengguo always disliked Ji Xia because he was a Beta who wouldn’t earn much money later and wouldn’t care if he lived or died. And Zheng Qiufang had no money and couldn’t afford medicine at all. The medicine Ji Xia could get was either herbs Zheng Qiufang gathered from who knows where or whatever medicine was available at home.
A desperate remedy.
Ji Xia had lived this way since he was a child and was still alive and well.
Therefore, he didn’t really understand that taking medicine indiscriminately can be fatal.
After taking the medicine, Ji Xia was terrified that Mr. Fu might suddenly come out and discover him. He frantically closed the medicine box, put away the medicine chest, and quickly lay back in bed.
He had just sat up, pretending to have just woken up, when the bathroom door opened. Fu Yuan came out, enveloped in steam.
“You’re awake. Why is your complexion so poor?”
Fu Yuan was wearing the same black home clothes as Ji Xia, and his eyes searched Ji Xia’s face. He approached, as if to check on him.
Ji Xia scrambled up from the bed in a hurry, rushed towards the bathroom, mumbling, “N-nothing.”
Fu Yuan watched the Omega’s frantic figure until it was blocked by the bathroom door before withdrawing his gaze.
He looked at the Omega’s scattered slippers by the bed, and his eyes scanned the room, finally landing on the small medicine chest placed crookedly under the bedside table.
Ji Xia was dramatically panting, leaning against the bathroom door.
A rush of intense dizziness and nausea made him tightly frown, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead. He didn’t know if it was his imagination, but he felt even worse after taking the medicine.
After forcing himself to breathe deeply for a while, Ji Xia adapted to the level of discomfort and thought he was okay, so he braced himself to brush his teeth.
Fu Yuan walked to the TV cabinet, bent down, took out the small medicine chest, and opened it. He quickly noticed that the positions of the two medicine bottles had been swapped. He opened the unsealed bottle and counted the quantity, noticing that three pills were missing.
He slightly furrowed his brows.
In the time it took Ji Xia to brush his teeth, his head became increasingly dizzy, and the feeling of nausea and stomach upset worsened. He touched his forehead and felt that the fever wasn’t getting more severe.
He had many folk remedies for dealing with physical discomfort, all gained through practice and with some effect.
He immediately struggled to turn on the faucet, filled a basin with cold water, and with a dizzy head, plunged his face into the cold water. Moments later, he tried hard to lift his body up.
He thought he would feel better, but he didn’t. The dizzy and throbbing sensation in his head became more intense.
Ji Xia leaned his hands on the sink. His vision blurred with double images, his heart was inexplicably beating very fast, breathing became difficult, and his body started to feel weak.
Ji Xia remembered the time when he was seven years old, and he was sick. Zheng Qiufang gave him some kind of medicine, and after taking it, he fell into a coma and didn’t wake up for three full days.
He felt that this time he would probably be unconscious for a few days before waking up. He hoped Mr. Fu wouldn’t find him too troublesome.
Ji Xia prayed, and his consciousness gradually faded.
He slowly lowered himself onto the floor, trying not to make a sound, so Mr. Fu wouldn’t find him.
Fu Yuan, holding the medicine bottle, quickly went to the bathroom door, knocked, and asked Ji Xia to open the door. However, after knocking for a long time, there was no sound inside. Fu Yuan’s expression darkened, and he directly pushed the bathroom door open.
As the door opened, he saw the Omega lying on the floor with a pale face, already unconscious.
Fu Yuan immediately stepped forward, picked him up, and placed him back on the bed.
He dialed the internal line and asked the ship’s doctor to come immediately. He also immediately contacted his assistant to arrange a helicopter for pick-up and notify the nearest hospital to prepare to receive a patient.
Ten minutes later, the ship’s doctor rushed over with his medical kit and performed a preliminary examination on Ji Xia.
The doctor took off his mask, his expression grave, and said, “Mr. Fu, the patient has symptoms of a fever, but the cause of his unconsciousness should be acute poisoning. Did the patient eat anything this morning?”
Fu Yuan: “He should have only taken medicine.”
Doctor: “Then it’s highly likely to be a drug allergy. The patient is already unconscious, and we cannot rule out the possibility of shock. I will immediately provide respiratory and circulatory support. Medical conditions on the ship are limited, Mr. Fu, it’s best to arrange a helicopter immediately to take the patient to the hospital.”
Half an hour later, a private helicopter landed on the rooftop helipad.
Ji Xia was carried by Fu Yuan onto the helicopter and headed for the nearest hospital. A little over an hour later, the helicopter landed directly on the private hospital’s rooftop. Doctors and nurses, who had been waiting for a long time, took over the patient and immediately rushed him to the emergency room.
As an employee who had worked at this high-end private hospital under the Fu Group for forty years, the old hospital director felt he had the privilege of waiting outside the emergency room with the boss.
He initially wanted to offer a few words of comfort, but seeing the Alpha’s stern expression and the surrounding air of hostility, he moved his lips, but ultimately said nothing.
There weren’t many patients at the high-end private hospital. The corridor was very quiet at the moment. The white light from the ceiling fluorescent lamps illuminated the hospital corridor with a stark white, and only the light above the emergency room door emitted a dazzling red glow.
Perhaps it was the aging, or perhaps there was nothing else to do, or perhaps it was meeting the Alpha again. It reminded the old director of things that happened more than twenty years ago.
Back then, he was only a chief surgeon.
One evening, just as he was about to leave work, he suddenly received a call for an emergency surgery.
He was ready to enter the operating room when a five-year-old child grabbed him in the hallway.
The child was incredibly strong, covered in bl00d, his eyes red, begging him, imploring him to save his Omega father.
The old director glanced at the Alpha standing beside him, tall, severe-faced, and with a terrifying aura. The child from back then had now grown into the powerful figure who could turn the tables at will.
But no matter how well he hid it, the old director could still see the deep fear hidden beneath the Alpha’s calm facade.
After all, in his youth, he had lost a most beloved relative in this very place. And in that way.
Fu Yuan stood there, his eyes fixed on the red light above the emergency room, without blinking.
Time passed, and one never knew what it would take away next. Three hours later, the emergency room light changed from red to green. The attending physician was the first to push the door open, indicating that the toxins had been completely cleared, but the patient still had a fever and required an IV drip.
Fu Yuan unclenched his tightly held fists and followed Ji Xia’s bed to the VIP room.
The Omega’s face was as pale as paper, sunken into the clean white sheets, looking like he was about to become transparent, as if a gust of wind could scatter him away.
Fu Yuan moved a cushioned chair and sat by the bedside, not daring to leave for a single step.
There was a knock at the door, and the old director came in with a doctor wearing glasses. Both of their expressions were quite solemn.
The doctor with glasses handed the lab report for the medicine to Fu Yuan and said, “Mr. Fu, according to the test results, the patient did not have a drug allergy, but rather mistakenly ingested an overdose of a poisonous substance.”
Fu Yuan’s eyes were terrifyingly dark, but he didn’t speak.
The director gave a look, and the doctor continued, “The drug the patient mistakenly ingested should be a type of pheromonal regulatory medicine, intended for Alphas. For an Omega, the effect is too intense. However, what truly led to the patient’s coma and poisoning was the Antai mixed into it. Antai is a chemical substance with a slight toxin. Since the patient is an Omega and took an overdose, this led to such a severe case of poisoning.”
Fu Yuan asked, “If an Alpha took one pill a day, what would happen?”
The doctor pushed up his glasses and said, “The toxin in ‘Antai is mild and easily metabolized. There would be no problems for three, five, or seven years. But if taken for a long time, the toxins accumulate, and the gland will suffer significant damage. Mild cases lead to atrophy and lesions, and severe cases lead to a complete loss of vitality, stopping glandular secretion. And as the gland dies, the Alpha’s life will…”
