- After Clinging to a Big Shot, the Pitiful Omega Got Pregnant
- Chapter 36 - Family Dinner
The black luxury car sped away from the densely packed skyscrapers of the Western New District, heading east, past the evening rush hour traffic, and into the old Western City District.
Outside the car window, the tall buildings gradually gave way to low, ancient style houses.
Although referred to as the old Western City District, the properties here were far more expensive than those in the New District; any courtyard house here would easily start with an eight-figure price tag. Those who could live here were either wealthy or noble.
The car stopped in front of a grand siheyuan (quadrangle courtyard) gate. Many cars, of various colors but all clearly expensive, were already lined up in front of the gate.
The driver opened the door, and Fu Yuan stepped out. After Ji Xia also alighted, Fu Yuan reached out and took the Omega’s hand, entering the courtyard gate together.
It was Ji Xia’s first time holding Mr. Fu’s hand, and the tips of his ears flushed slightly red.
The Alpha’s palm was broad and large, his fingers long, completely enveloping Ji Xia’s hand and giving him a strong sense of security.
His attention lingered on their clasped hands for a while, then he was slowly drawn to the scene inside the siheyuan.
Passing through the vermilion gate and around the spirit screen, they entered a winding corridor. Beneath the corridor was a lotus pond. There were no lotus flowers in early autumn, but they could see leisurely swimming koi under the lotus leaves.
Ji Xia was reminded of a scene he once glimpsed in a TV drama the bakery owner watched, which was almost exactly the same and in the drama, that place was where a prince lived.
It was only then that he felt nervous, and a sense of timidity arose in his heart. But the warmth radiating from the hand holding his calmed him.
He moved a little closer to Mr. Fu’s side.
As long as he was with Mr. Fu, he had nothing to fear.
Ji Xia was led into the main hall, and as soon as they entered, he felt all eyes turn to them in unison.
These gazes were not like the curious scrutiny at banquets, nor the fervent inquiry of Omegas in a restaurant, but a sharp, scrutinizing, terrifying stare that felt like it wanted to strip him bare.
Unused to such a display, Ji Xia’s eyes flitted about in panic, pausing when he saw Fu Su.
Fu Su’s gaze was not as sharp, carrying instead an expression of disdainful mockery. He wore a dark slate-blue changpao (long gown) and silver-rimmed glasses, which, combined with his cultured and aloof demeanor, made him look like a noble young master from the Republican era.
Ji Xia didn’t linger and quickly withdrew his gaze, lowering his eyes.
Even after having his Alpha snatched away on the ship, Fu Su still didn’t pay any attention to Ji Xia.
To him, a small-town Omega posed no threat. Jiao Mubai’s infatuation then was just an accident. Otherwise, why would Jiao Mubai have returned later to beg him like a dog?
A cold smile played on Fu Su’s lips.
The small town Omega was wearing a white shirt tonight, with a mandarin collar and frog buttons, in a traditional Chinese style. The design was conventional, but the vibrant flowers that spread from the left side of the shirt covering most of the chest and almost the entire back were stunning.
The flowers were lifelike, and the embroidery was clearly exceptional, making for a dazzling sight.
It was a pity that Grandpa preferred elegance and utterly loathed such vibrant colors.
And Fu Yuan had recently been at odds with Grandpa. Grandpa couldn’t do anything to Fu Yuan, so his anger would likely be directed at this small-town Omega.
Fu Su was complacent. He gave his Omega father a look, the meaning clear: being so annoying, this small-town Omega would probably be thrown out of the old residence tonight.
Jian Qinghe gave his son a look, telling him to be discreet.
The golden nanmu sofas in the main hall were full of people, and some who couldn’t find a seat stood to the side. No one spoke, but the atmosphere was oppressive and tense, with undercurrents churning beneath the stillness.
“Bringing just anyone back! What do you take this house for?!”
The old man sitting in the main seat, dressed in a black Tang suit, whose face bore some resemblance to Fu Yuan but was more imposing, spoke in a deep voice.
A smile spread in the depths of Fu Su’s eyes. Here it came, the show was starting.
The other nephews and relatives from the collateral branches also wore expressions of people waiting for a good show. They all hoped the relationship between the grandson and grandfather would become as strained as possible, preferably severed completely, so they would have a chance to take the top position.
Fu Yuan’s voice was flat and cold. “If I’m not welcome, I’ll just leave.” With that, he turned on his heel to depart.
Fu Xuan was utterly enraged by his own grandson. “You brat, dare to try and leave?!”
One of the uncles saw the situation turning bad and immediately stood up to mediate, offering some conciliatory words and then urging everyone to start dinner. This managed to diffuse the volatile atmosphere.
Everyone then moved to the dining room.
The dining room was vast, dominated by a large round table that could seat thirty people.
Ji Xia followed Mr. Fu and took a seat. He was so nervous he was sweating, his palms clammy. He was afraid Mr. Fu would be disgusted but didn’t dare let go.
The atmosphere in the old residence terrified him.
The older people, after their initial scrutinizing looks, no longer glanced at him directly. The younger ones looked at him with sticky, lingering gazes, the kind Ji Xia had seen in Chen Chaofei’s eyes, making him very uncomfortable.
Only one gaze was very gentle. When Ji Xia looked over, the person even gave him a slight, friendly smile. It was the middle-aged man sitting next to Fu Su.
The man looked somewhat like Fu Su, and Ji Xia guessed he was probably Fu Su’s Omega father, Jian Qinghe.
Ji Xia didn’t respond. Jian Qinghe was the bad guy who had poisoned Mr. Fu, so he wouldn’t acknowledge him.
At that moment, a round-faced Omega suddenly complained, “There are no seats left, where am I supposed to sit?”
His delicate question was like a drop of water in hot oil, instantly making the already slightly eased atmosphere tense again. Everyone’s eyes swiveled back to Ji Xia.
The number of people for the family dinner at the old residence was always carefully counted, so such a situation shouldn’t occur. The only possibility was that someone had not been counted as a Fu family member.
Ji Xia didn’t understand the complexities of the situation. The barrage of eyes made him flinch, and he immediately stood up. Fu Yuan was a step too slow in trying to pull him back.
The round-faced Omega glanced timidly at Fu Yuan and didn’t dare move.
Ji Xia was stunned. He had never been in this kind of situation. After standing up, he didn’t know what to do. But he knew there was no place for him here, and he didn’t want to cause trouble for Mr. Fu. But where was he supposed to go?
Ji Xia’s fingers lightly scratched Mr. Fu’s palm. Enduring the countless stares, he awkwardly whispered, “Mr. Fu, where should I go?”
The dining table was silent. All eyes were waiting for the Alpha’s reaction, from which they would gauge their attitude towards this Omega who had appeared out of nowhere.
A flicker of faint helplessness crossed Fu Yuan’s eyes. He pushed his chair back slightly, then with a pull, he drew the Omega into his arms and onto his lap.
Immediately after, he kicked over the empty chair and said with an utterly cold expression, “My person. If anyone dares to target him again, it won’t be resolved as simply as this time. The Elder’s face is only good for this one time.”
Fu Su’s face turned pale. He knew very well that Fu Yuan was ostensibly talking about the seat but was actually warning him and his father.
Jian Qinghe maintained his placid, gentle look, but his eyes deepened slightly as he looked at Ji Xia.
The others were silent with fear.
Everyone present was well aware that although Fu Yuan was the head of the Fu family, a portion of the Fu Corporation’s shares was still in Elder Fu’s hands. If the Elder wanted to replace him, Fu Yuan wouldn’t necessarily come out unscathed.
Throwing such a blatant tantrum at a family dinner was clearly showing disrespect to the Elder. With the Elder’s fiery temper, he definitely wouldn’t tolerate it.
They all waited for a thunderous rage that would send the already strained relationship between the grandfather and grandson plummeting to an all-time low.
However, after waiting for a moment, what they got was Elder Fu’s single line: “The meal is served.”
This completely bewildered everyone present.
A few uncles exchanged glances, sensing something unusual. Jian Qinghe’s gentle expression, however, cracked slightly, a hint of malice flashing in his eyes.
Sitting on Mr. Fu’s lap in front of so many people made Ji Xia’s whole body feel hot, but there truly was nowhere else to sit.
The round-faced Omega was also trembling, squeezed onto a chair with another Omega, which lessened Ji Xia’s embarrassment somewhat.
Platters of sumptuous dishes were brought one by one to the round table. Amidst the swirling heat, the recent drama seemed to have been forgotten.
People began chatting animatedly. Occasionally, an elder would exchange a few friendly words with Ji Xia. The previous disregard was completely gone; their eyes were warm, and their attitude was kind, as if Ji Xia were a relative’s child.
However, Mr. Fu blocked all their questions, so Ji Xia didn’t actually have to say anything. This made Ji Xia breathe a sigh of relief.
Another slice of pork tongue was passed to his mouth. Ji Xia opened his mouth and swallowed it in one bite.
As soon as he finished, another spare rib came his way. Ji Xia accepted it readily.
Seeing Ji Xia spit out the bone, Fu Yuan dug out a piece of fish meat, put it on a spoon, removed the bones, and fed it to the Omega. He asked, “What else do you want to eat?”
Ji Xia leaned his back against the Alpha’s chest and quietly said, “Mr. Fu, you haven’t eaten. You should eat too.”
Fu Yuan put down his chopsticks and replied, “I want to eat shrimp.”
Ji Xia hummed and, when the shrimp platter was rotated over, he strained to pick out a shrimp.
The shrimp was as big as his fist. He put on a disposable glove, imitating others, and seriously peeled the shrimp for Mr. Fu. After peeling the shrimp, Ji Xia very naturally took a bite of the shrimp into his mouth and leaned in to meet Fu Yuan’s lips.
Fu Yuan didn’t refuse, taking the shrimp from his mouth.
“Cough, cough, cough”
Fu Xuan choked on his food and started coughing violently.
The sudden coughing fit drew the attention of everyone who had been secretly observing the two’s interaction.
Fu Xuan took a sip of water to calm down, then looked at Ji Xia, his voice carrying a tone of reproach, yet not strictly severe. “Be mindful of the occasion.”
When Ji Xia became focused, he tended to forget everything else.
Remembering his recent action, his face instantly turned scarlet. He lowered his eyes, wishing he could dig a hole and disappear into it.
Fu Su couldn’t understand why Grandpa, who was usually so focused on etiquette, was so lenient with this small-town Omega. He was so angry he bit the soft tissue inside his mouth.
Fu Yuan was clearly amused. The hostility that had clouded his brow dissipated significantly, and he resumed feeding his Omega.
Elder Fu, with his traditional views, simply couldn’t watch any longer. He set down his chopsticks and left the table.
The others had come to a family dinner only to be force fed a dose of public display of affection and wanted to leave too. But since Fu Yuan, the current head of the family, hadn’t left, none of them dared to move and could only stiffly continue sitting.
