Chapter 14: “She called you baby?”
“You’re still too skinny,” Chang Ning said as she looked at Xu Ling’s protruding shoulder bones.
Before filming started, she had asked Xu Ling to eat a bit more, gain some weight. Xu Ling did gain eight pounds, but still looked far too thin. As a killer, she didn’t look quite convincing.
Wen Xi was a frugal person. Although shady agents took a big cut, she never lacked money—she just didn’t spend on unnecessary or flashy things.
But she never compromised on food. How could one train or fight without eating well?
Jian Yu, on the other hand, looked like Wen Xi never fed her enough.
Xu Ling looked up with an expression that said, “What can I do?” She was trying hard to eat—it was just her body type.
“Well, it is what it is. Luckily, most of the close-combat scenes are on Qin Cong’an. Her body type is just right, absolutely perfect,” Chang Ning couldn’t help but praise.
Anyone who saw Qin Cong’an’s figure would envy her—muscles in all the right places, strength mixed with elegance, and a beautiful silhouette.
Just hearing that one compliment from Chang Ning had Xu Ling swallowing hard. Her mind was full of Qin Cong’an’s body—it was amazing, ridiculously so.
But when her clothes were off, her chest was still soft and full, and Xu Ling loved burying her face in it, leaving her covered in kisses.
From afar, it was like Qin Cong’an could hear them talking. She looked over at Xu Ling.
Xu Ling was so startled she immediately looked away, staring down at the cracked, worn floorboards—but somehow, that made her think of the broken places on her body. They started aching again… but also brought a strange sort of pleasure.
Xu Ling felt like she was turning into a pervert. With so many people around, how could she be thinking about that?
The makeup was finally done. They rehearsed a bit, then got ready to shoot.
She didn’t even need to act—just be herself. Just like Jian Yu, breath hitching from the feeling on her back, biting her lower lip, her shoulders rising and falling with her breathing.
Qin Cong’an’s breath fell hot against her back. Her face moved closer—it was both cold and burning hot.
Chang Ning didn’t yell “cut” for a long time. She waited to see how far the two of them would take it.
“The medicine smells bad,” Xu Ling said.
“Okay,” Qin Cong’an replied hoarsely, lingering on her back, her breath tracing across her shoulder.
Her fingers slid down along her spine. Xu Ling’s beautiful back dipped slightly, then arched. Under the shadowy lighting, even her fake wounds looked sensual.
Finally, Chang Ning called “cut.” She felt like if she didn’t, the two might actually start going at it. Of course, it was just the atmosphere—she knew it wouldn’t really happen.
They filmed the same scene from a few more angles, then Xu Ling went to the bathroom.
After filming, the two split up, keeping their distance like they weren’t close at all.
During later scenes, they didn’t speak. Qin Cong’an was as cold-faced as ever, and Xu Ling mirrored her calmness.
Even though Xu Ling had been upset the night before, she still listened to what Qin Cong’an had said. Out in public, she kept her distance—she didn’t want to cause trouble for her.
But truthfully, she did want to cause trouble for her. She wanted to ruin her completely. And yet… she couldn’t bear to.
Behind the monitor, they were watching the playback of the scene they’d just shot.
Chang Ning’s lips were twitching with suppressed excitement. “Good, good—there’s a real spark. Great work, both of you.”
She glanced left, then right—both of them wore blank expressions, completely different from the barely-contained desire on-screen.
Chang Ning sincerely added, “Really, you worked hard. That wasn’t easy.”
She knew Qin Cong’an had a boyfriend. As for Xu Ling, she wasn’t sure—she remembered seeing her at a lesbian bar once, flustered when someone flirted with her. Probably straight. Yet they had still delivered the kind of chemistry Chang Ning wanted. That must’ve taken a lot.
In the hotel elevator, no one spoke. It was very quiet.
The doors opened. The crew stepped out, leaving only Xu Ling and Qin Cong’an.
Still no one spoke. Still silent.
The doors opened again. They exited one after the other.
Xu Ling didn’t stop at her own room. She followed Qin Cong’an into her room, kicked the door shut, then leaned down and kissed her, sucking on the purplish bruise on her lips.
“We nailed it in one take today,” Xu Ling said. “Director Chang didn’t expect that. My idea was great, right? She said we had amazing chemistry.”
Qin Cong’an didn’t answer. Instead, she kissed back and suddenly lifted Xu Ling’s leg, picking her up.
Startled by the sudden lift, Xu Ling wrapped her arms around her neck, then went back to kissing her like she couldn’t get enough.
They fell onto the bed. Xu Ling ran her hands over Qin Cong’an’s strong arms, completely smitten. It was a shame Qin Cong’an had to be on camera—otherwise, Xu Ling would’ve covered her with bite marks.
Still, Qin Cong’an didn’t say a word or look at her. She simply avoided the spot on her lip that had been bitten and kept moving downward.
Xu Ling asked, “Why won’t you kiss here? Because of the medicine smell?”
“You want me to? Won’t it hurt?”
“It doesn’t hurt. Already healed,” Xu Ling lied. It did hurt. The next second, she winced with a hiss—but she loved it.
It felt like punishment for doing something wrong, and she liked being punished by Qin Cong’an.
Both leads were planning to attend the concert.
Chang Ning received their time-off requests in advance and adjusted the schedule, giving them the day off.
Gu Qi saw Qin Cong’an getting into the car and was surprised. “An-jie, you’re going too?”
“Why not?” Qin Cong’an glanced at Xu Ling, who was leaning against the window and not looking at her.
“Of course you can! I just heard Huai-jie say there were only two tickets.”
“I don’t need a ticket.”
Made sense. Gu Qi thought, Qin Cong’an had been acting since her first year in college—ten years in the industry, and a very successful ten years. Unlike small actors like them.
She probably had all kinds of connections. She could probably just flash her face and walk right into Jiang Ruzhi’s concert.
Once the car started moving, no one said anything. The atmosphere was quiet.
Gu Qi had a cold, striking face. In the movie, she played a ruthless agent who was all business. Whether dealing with Wen Xi or clients, she spoke little and hit hard.
Before Wen Xi killed her, she just gave a bloody grin and said nothing—went down without a word.
But in real life, Gu Qi was totally different. She hated awkward silences and felt like someone had to say something.
Normally, she wouldn’t even try talking to Qin Cong’an. But since they were all headed to see Jiang Jiang perform, she asked, “An-jie, which of Jiang Jiang’s songs do you like?”
“Never listened to any.”
“…” Gu Qi was so shocked she went speechless. Never listened? Then why go to a concert? On a rare day off, no less? Why not just stay in the hotel and sleep?
Xu Ling was also shocked. Her fans weren’t wrong—Qin Cong’an really didn’t like music? Not even one song? So why go?
Could it be because she was close with Jiang Ruzhi? But if so, she’d have gone to other concerts too. As far as anyone knew, she’d never been to one.
Then what other reason could there be…?
No way… could it be because she was going? Did Qin Cong’an want to go because of her?
Gu Qi asked, “Then why are you going?”
Good question, Xu Ling thought, ears perking up.
“Nothing better to do,” Qin Cong’an said. “Now, can you stop talking? I want to nap.”
“Oh, sorry, sorry.” Gu Qi fell silent and shot Xu Ling a pleading look—isn’t she hard to talk to? Right? Right??
Xu Ling gave her nothing. Just put a finger to her lips: “Shh,” then closed her eyes to rest.
Gu Qi was despairing. Okay… in times like this, music is the lifesaver!
She reached for her earbuds, but couldn’t find them anywhere. Ugh. She hadn’t thought to bring them, expecting to chat with Xu Ling. Truly despair.
As they neared the stadium, traffic got worse.
They finally arrived and got out, all wearing masks. Qin Cong’an also wore a baseball cap. They entered through a VIP entrance.
The VIP section didn’t have assigned seating—first come, first served. The three of them decided to sit at the back.
Gu Qi excused herself to go to the restroom—really, she just didn’t want to sit next to Qin Cong’an. Who wanted to sit beside someone who hadn’t heard any of Jiang Jiang’s songs? It would totally ruin the vibe.
Xu Ling looked at Qin Cong’an beside her and asked, “You really haven’t heard a single song?”
“Nope.”
“Then why did you come?”
“Such a familiar question. Didn’t I just answer that?”
Xu Ling rolled her eyes inwardly. Fine. She was clearly overthinking. She really just came out of boredom? What a waste.
Qin Cong’an looked at her phone, then showed it to Xu Ling. “Want to go?”
Xu Ling saw the screen—it was a chat with Jiang Ruzhi.
Jiang Ruzhi: Baby, are you here yet? Come backstage. If you can’t find the way, I’ll send someone to get you.
Xu Ling was hit with too many thoughts at once—where to even begin? After a few seconds, she asked, “She calls you baby?”
“If you get to know her, you’ll be her baby too.”
“…”
“Happy?”
Xu Ling felt complicated. It was hard to describe, but… yeah, being called “baby” by your favorite singer was pretty nice. “Mhm.”
She heard Qin Cong’an laugh—a cold one.
“Come on then,” she stood up. “I’ll introduce her to a new baby.”
Xu Ling clearly sensed something off in her tone, but didn’t want to overthink it. She just figured she was being weird.
Of course she wanted to meet Jiang Ruzhi up close. She stood too, walking beside Qin Cong’an, and asked something else that had been bothering her since seeing her phone.
“I thought you only added private friends with your alt account. But you added her with your main?”
She’d seen her WeChat avatar—a pair of eyes glowing in the dark, a black cat. Not the default blank profile.
Qin Cong’an glanced at her. With the mask and hat, most of her face was hidden. “Let’s just say you ‘thought’ wrong.”
“Why though?” Xu Ling pressed.
“Because… our relationship is special, I guess.”
Xu Ling felt a stab from that word—special. Yeah, real special. She asked, “So on your alt account, I’m the only contact?”
“Mhm.” Qin Cong’an sounded impatient. “How many questions do you have?”
“None now.”
Xu Ling’s tone chilled. But not as much as her heart.
She understood now. She finally understood why Qin Cong’an used her alt account to add her—because it’d be easier to block her later.
She didn’t want Xu Ling to know her main account. Didn’t want the hassle after things ended.
Probably how she handled all her on-set flings. Alt account. Delete after wrap.
So yeah. Real special.
