Chapter 15: “Do you believe I won’t expose what we’ve done together?”
Before the concert began, the staff were all busy, and the crowd entering was huge.
A staff member rushed past, and Qin Cong’an pulled Xu Ling toward her to avoid the person bumping into her.
Xu Ling was beyond annoyed. Why pull her like that? Trying to act so considerate—why not just let her get run over? After all, in less than two months, they’d have nothing to do with each other anymore.
Backstage was even more chaotic.
Xu Ling was quite familiar with this kind of situation. She was used to the frantic running around behind the scenes and had developed a knack for dodging people.
But today, it was like she was deliberately trying to mess with Qin Cong’an. She walked dead straight, not giving way to anyone. Since she insisted on pulling her along, let her try—see how patient she really was, see if she could protect her the whole way.
“Can you watch where you’re going?” Qin Cong’an frowned.
“Oh.” Xu Ling, scolded, decided not to keep acting stupid. What was she even trying to prove? Their relationship had always been “special”—she already knew that. Why throw a tantrum?
What, did she think Qin Cong’an was actually her girlfriend?
When they reached the room where Jiang Ruzhi was, Qin Cong’an knocked twice and walked in.
“Baby!” Jiang Ruzhi’s bright, melodic voice rang out immediately, full of excitement and affection. “It’s been so long! This is the first time you’ve ever come to one of my shows—I’m so touched!”
Xu Ling knew Jiang Ruzhi was an open and playful personality—she’d seen her variety show appearances—but in person, it became clear that what she showed on TV was actually toned down.
Hearing her so enthusiastically call Qin Cong’an “baby” made Xu Ling shiver.
“Don’t come over,” Qin Cong’an raised her hand to stop Jiang Ruzhi’s hug. “Someone might get jealous.”
“No way.” Jiang Ruzhi looked toward the “someone,” smiling as she walked over and sat on the woman’s lap. Her voice turned sweet, “Mommy wouldn’t get jealous, right?”
The woman wrapped her arms around Jiang Ruzhi’s waist and didn’t respond—just pinched her earlobe, her expression unreadable.
Xu Ling was stunned—but then it all clicked. No wonder Qin Cong’an said Jiang Ruzhi would call her “baby” too. Turns out being a “baby” didn’t matter—“Mommy” was the only one.
Xu Ling had heard gossip that Jiang Ruzhi had been in a long-term relationship with someone outside the industry, but of course Jiang had never confirmed it.
And the only consistent piece of info that circulated was vague: no name, no age, no face.
Some fans even imagined, or PR might’ve deliberately released smoke screens, that it was a man.
Xu Ling hadn’t cared much before. She just liked Jiang Ruzhi’s music.
But now, seeing Jiang Ruzhi and her girlfriend, Xu Ling’s gossip radar lit up like a Christmas tree.
The woman looked a few years older than Jiang Ruzhi, with pale, flawless skin. Jiang called her “Mommy,” and she really did exude a maternal vibe.
But instead of being the gentle, intellectual, all-embracing type, she seemed more like the firm and strict version of “Mommy.” Still, the way she looked at Jiang Ruzhi was full of tenderness.
“This little baby—who is she?” Jiang Ruzhi asked, looking at Xu Ling.
“An actress from the same production—Xu Ling. She likes your music.”
“Thank you, little baby.” Jiang Ruzhi smiled at her. “Are you the other female lead?”
Qin Cong’an: “Mm.”
Jiang Ruzhi grinned playfully: “Do you two have any bed scenes?”
“We signed an NDA.”
“So that means yes?”
“Confidential.” Qin Cong’an repeated, earning a dramatic eye-roll from Jiang Ruzhi.
The woman gently patted Jiang Ruzhi’s butt, saying, “Enough.”
Then she turned to Qin Cong’an. “Xiao An, filming’s going well?”
“Pretty well. The rough parts—she helped me.” Qin Cong’an glanced at Xu Ling.
Xu Ling thought, Wow, she really brought that up. The “help” she gave her? Didn’t she ignore her for a whole day afterward, and then give her a lecture that night?
“Wow, little baby, so capable,” Jiang Ruzhi said with interest, then asked Xu Ling, “Are you a model? Like the runway kind?”
“I used to be. Stopped early last year.”
“I thought so—you looked familiar. I’ve probably seen you in a show.” Jiang Ruzhi often watched runway clips—not for the clothes, but for a certain spectator. She turned to her girlfriend, “Mommy, have you seen her?”
The woman replied, “Don’t think so. I go to shows to look at clothes, not people.”
“Mommy always says that to keep me in check. Bet you secretly eye the pretty girls too.” Jiang Ruzhi said, earning another playful smack.
Qin Cong’an rolled her eyes. “You asked me to come here just to show off your relationship?”
“Well, you wouldn’t let me hug you. You wouldn’t even answer my questions!”
“We’re leaving.” Qin Cong’an stood and pulled Xu Ling by the wrist.
Xu Ling hadn’t even had a chance to say she loved Jiang Ruzhi’s music yet, so she quickly blurted out, “Jiang Jiang, I’ve listened to you since your first album—love every song, especially the ones you wrote yourself!”
“I know, I know, love you too~” Jiang Ruzhi threw up a giant heart with both hands while draping herself over “Mommy’s” shoulders.
The pose was ridiculous, but Xu Ling couldn’t help smiling.
Qin Cong’an dragged her out and shut the door.
Letting go of her wrist, she adjusted her mask and said, “That’s her girlfriend.”
“Uh,” Xu Ling didn’t get why she was saying this. “I have eyes. I can tell. She’s obviously not her actual mom.”
“Then why were you so happy?”
“…I’ve been a fan for years. She tossed me a bit of fanservice—can’t I be happy?”
Qin Cong’an was silent for a moment, then said in a low voice, “You don’t seem surprised by their relationship.”
“Of course I’m surprised.” Xu Ling was surprised—sure, she knew Jiang Ruzhi had a girlfriend, but hearing her call someone “Mommy” out loud was a bit shocking. “But I can’t exactly make it obvious, can I?”
Qin Cong’an frowned slightly, like she wanted to say something but held back. Finally, she just said, “What you saw—you need to keep quiet.”
“I get it. I won’t say anything.”
“Mm. I trust you’re discreet.”
Hah. Xu Ling felt like she was being called out again. She sneered inwardly: Maybe I won’t spill their secret—but do you believe I won’t expose what you and I did?
“What?” Qin Cong’an noticed her odd expression.
“Hm? What? Nothing.” Xu Ling looked at her, all smiles, brows arched in innocence.
Gu Qi came back from the restroom to find their seats empty. When the two finally returned, she was on edge, praying Qin Cong’an wouldn’t sit next to her.
Thankfully, Xu Ling took the middle seat between them.
Gu Qi asked, “Where did you guys go?”
“Backstage.”
“Whoa!” Gu Qi grabbed Xu Ling’s arm in excitement. “Why didn’t you call me?!”
“You were in the bathroom—we didn’t know when you’d be back.”
“Aww, okay.” Gu Qi was already grateful to be there—no need to be greedy. “But how’d you get backstage access?”
She thought Xu Ling was just a regular fan like her, one of the many who couldn’t even get tickets at first.
Xu Ling glanced at Qin Cong’an—she was expressionless, but staring at their hands, which made Xu Ling uncomfortable. She subtly pulled her arm away and said, “They’re very close.”
“Ohh, I get it!” Gu Qi understood. So today, Qin Cong’an came as Jiang Ruzhi’s friend. But it was hard to imagine—one so cold, one so bubbly—how they even became friends.
The show was about to start.
Other people filled the VIP section—business people, influencers.
Before the show began, influencers were taking selfies, and some accidentally caught Qin Cong’an in the frame.
Even with her mask and hat, she was recognizable—especially to fans of the industry. Her figure alone made it obvious.
Qin Cong’an never looked up or around. She didn’t seem to care about the performance—or anything, really. Just sat there, completely still.
Even when the show started and Jiang Ruzhi came on stage, she remained in that meditative state.
If she really came out of boredom, wasn’t she even more bored now?
Xu Ling glanced at her and felt like her presence was dampening her own concert experience.
Luckily, Gu Qi was on her other side, already hyped up, singing along and waving her light stick with the beat—fully immersed.
Xu Ling scooted a little closer to Gu Qi. The closer you are to the hype, the more hyped you get. She came here to enjoy the concert, even if it meant ignoring the person she liked.
Her movement was obvious. Qin Cong’an didn’t budge but did glance at her.
Jiang Ruzhi’s voice was versatile. When she sang sweet songs, it melted the heart and made people crave love. When the lyrics leaned philosophical, her voice turned slightly husky, pulling listeners into a deep emotional space.
“Later I met many sunsets / Longing in a place unseen / One breath / One breath…”
Hearing a song about partings made it hard not to recall past separations—or anticipate ones yet to come.
Jiang Ruzhi’s voice trembled, full of wistfulness and helplessness.
Xu Ling had been trying to ignore Qin Cong’an, but hearing this song, she couldn’t help but glance at her… It reflected exactly how she felt. She remembered that stormy night, drunk, going to find her—and she responded. From now on, every time it rained, Xu Ling would think of her. But she wouldn’t be by her side again.
Their relationship would end, just like the song.
Xu Ling had a lot on her mind. But when she looked at Qin Cong’an—her eyes were unfazed, even distracted.
Right. Looking at her was a waste of time.
Unrequited love was always a one-sided thing.
Xu Ling turned toward Gu Qi, who was crying, and pulled out a tissue.
Gu Qi clung to her arm gratefully, sobbing with a nasal voice while singing along.
Xu Ling felt awkward, but still patted her comfortingly. The song and Gu Qi’s tears stirred up her own emotions—her nose tingled.
As the chorus ended, she wiped her tears away, trying to empty her mind and stop thinking about what would happen two months from now.
She started wondering what personal experience Jiang Ruzhi must’ve had to write this song.
If it was about love, then that meant she had another girlfriend before this one. And if her current girlfriend heard her sing this with such emotion—wouldn’t she get jealous?
Xu Ling’s mind spun off into different directions, carried away by each song and Jiang Ruzhi’s delicate voice. It was like she walked through a lifetime of joy and sorrow.
After the full setlist, the crowd screamed for an encore.
Jiang Ruzhi returned in a simpler outfit and chatted with the audience. “I hope when you go home tonight, you remember this time we spent together—this moment of resonance.”
As the intro of the encore started, she continued: “There are over 7 billion people on Earth, and yet tonight we all met here. Isn’t that amazing? Hold the hand of the person next to you, okay? Even if this ends, this moment we share is already a miracle in the vast universe.”
“Come on, come on, let me see you holding hands! Don’t be shy—not one person left out!”
Gu Qi immediately grabbed Xu Ling’s hand and even raised them up excitedly.
Xu Ling lost all feeling in her right hand and shifted all her attention to her left. Nervous and dry-mouthed, she reached out toward Qin Cong’an.
That hand quickly met hers, fingers spread and locked together.
In bed, they often held hands like this—fingers interlocked so tightly their nails dug into each other’s skin.
Xu Ling hadn’t expected her to grab her hand like this. She thought it’d just be a casual clasp, like she had with Gu Qi.
Didn’t Qin Cong’an say they shouldn’t do this kind of thing outside their room?
Well, she started it—couldn’t blame her now.
Xu Ling gently stroked the back of her hand with her thumb, swaying to the rhythm. Amid the sea of people singing together, she turned her face slightly and pressed a kiss to the back of Qin Cong’an’s hand.
She stole a glance at her and saw that flicker of surprise in her eyes. Xu Ling wanted to laugh—whatever scolding she’d get later, it’d be worth it.
