Chapter 17: Is She Jealous?
It took two days to finish filming this segment.
Kumuai’s body was stuffed into a bag by Wen Xi—Gu Qi’s role wrapped.
Qin Cong’an crouched down, looking at Gu Qi’s head sticking out from the bag, and said, “Good job. Happy wrap.”
“…Thank you, Sister An.” Gu Qi swallowed. She’d just poked her head out of the bag and saw her—it still felt like Sister An hadn’t completely come out of character. Kinda scary.
A staff member helped Gu Qi climb out. Chang Ning personally handed her a bouquet. “Great job. Thanks for your outstanding performance.”
“Thank you, Director Chang. Thanks everyone for all your support and guidance. I really enjoyed my time on set.” Gu Qi gave a bow, ready to call it a day. Finally!
She walked over to Xu Ling to say goodbye. “Boohoo, we definitely have to meet again! It’s just a pity we’re not in the same city.”
Xu Ling also felt a little sad. Filming was slowly coming to an end, and the day when she and Qin Cong’an would wrap wasn’t far off either. She smiled and said, “You better contact me when you’re in Beicheng. I’ll visit you if I go to Jiangcheng.”
“Deal!”
After washing off the bl00d makeup, Gu Qi wrapped for the day and flew back that same night.
Xu Ling returned to the hotel after work, took a shower, and found the room unusually quiet.
She and Gu Qi had chatted every night these past few days. Now that Gu Qi had left, it felt peaceful… and a bit lonely.
Qin Cong’an hadn’t contacted her either. Xu Ling lay on her bed and opened her alt account. The moment she saw it, her anger returned—but she didn’t want to be the one to reach out.
Wait… what if Qin Cong’an had already deleted her?
Just the thought made all her anger vanish, replaced by a sinking sadness. Being deleted after they wrapped—that she expected. But now? No way.
Xu Ling hesitantly sent a single emoji. She told herself, If it doesn’t go through, I’ll go find her immediately. And if it does go through… I’ll still go find her.
There was no red exclamation mark.
Xu Ling jumped out of bed, left her room, and knocked on that all-too-familiar door.
“Who is it?”
“It’s me.” Couldn’t she tell just from her knocking? She used to just open the door without asking.
The door opened. Qin Cong’an looked at her. “Something wrong?”
“Yeah.” Xu Ling peeked inside. “I want to talk. Can I come in?”
“There’s someone in my room.”
“Who?”
Lin Xinnuo heard the voices outside and ran out. “It’s me. But I—”
“I’ve still got something to talk to you about. Go back in for now,” Qin Cong’an interrupted her, then turned back to Xu Ling. “Whatever it is, just say it here.”
Xu Ling’s eyes shifted to Lin Xinnuo. Her body language clearly showed she had nothing important to say. Qin Cong’an was obviously just trying to keep her out. Xu Ling asked, “You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?”
“What?”
“I told you last time—if you’ve got a problem, just tell me. And now you’re acting like this.”
Qin Cong’an leaned against the doorframe. One hand reached for Xu Ling’s collar, the back of her hand brushing Xu Ling’s freshly bathed skin. “I just don’t get why you’re looking for me. We’re not even shooting that kind of scene tomorrow.”
Xu Ling swallowed and grabbed her hand. “Can’t we just talk?”
“Now that Gu Qi’s gone, then you remember to come talk to me?” Qin Cong’an pulled her hand back and crossed her arms. “Too bad—you and I don’t talk like you and her do.”
Xu Ling suddenly had a thought—Is she jealous? That was… kind of cute. But it didn’t make any sense. Anyone could see she and Gu Qi were just fellow stans—they only talked about Jiang Ruzhi and nothing else. What was there to be jealous of?
Besides, they were just in a “special” relationship. Why would she be jealous?
She didn’t even get jealous when her boyfriend sold fake couple moments with others. And she was jealous of her?
The door to the room next door opened, and another actor came out. She didn’t look surprised to see the two of them—just a little curious why they were standing at the door. She said hi and walked out, saying she was going to buy something.
Qin Cong’an took advantage of the distraction, shut the door, and went back into the room.
Lin Xinnuo sat uncomfortably on the sofa. When she saw Sister An come in, she stood up.
She’d vaguely heard bits of their conversation outside. It sounded… loaded. And after seeing Sister An come out of Xu Ling’s room that morning, her mind had run wild with guesses.
Qin Cong’an sat down on the sofa and picked up her script. After a while, she noticed Lin Xinnuo was still standing and said, “Sit down.”
Lin Xinnuo sat and asked, “Sister An, did you have something to say to me?”
“Nothing much.”
“…” Lin Xinnuo wanted to ask if she could leave, but she knew the answer. If she could leave, Sister An wouldn’t have told her to sit down in the first place. So awkward. “Did Sister Ling have something to say?”
“What do you think?”
“M-Me?” Lin Xinnuo pointed to herself. How would she know? “I have no idea.”
Qin Cong’an kept her eyes on the script and asked, “Do you know who Gu Qi’s ex is?”
Lin Xinnuo breathed a sigh of relief—this she did know! “It’s her college classmate. He’s an actor too.”
“Guy or girl?”
“Huh? A guy.”
“Oh.”
There was a long silence. Then Qin Cong’an asked again, “What about Xu Ling’s ex?”
“That… I’ve never heard of one. She used to be overseas, so I don’t know.” As soon as she finished, she saw Sister An toss the script onto the coffee table, then lean back and stare at the ceiling, her expression full of frustration.
Though startled, Lin Xinnuo couldn’t help thinking—She’s so good-looking… Even that death-angle jawline looked amazing.
She saw Sister An raise her right hand, gazing at it. It wasn’t clear if she was looking at the back of her hand or the light on the ceiling.
Everything Sister An did looked like a scene from a movie. Lin Xinnuo was still admiring her when she suddenly heard, “Alright, go. Good night.”
“Good night, Sister!” Lin Xinnuo scurried out of the room.
…
The next day, not only were they not filming a romantic scene—they had to argue.
The bag with Kumuai’s body was left at the door. Wen Xi planned to take it out when she left.
Jian Yu came home after waiting over an hour in line for some super popular roast duck. She saw the big bundle at the door, kicked it lightly—it felt soft—and asked, “What’s this?”
“Kumuai.”
“Sis Ai?” Jian Yu immediately dropped the roast duck and tried to open the bag, but Wen Xi stopped her. She still managed to peek in and confirm it really was Kumuai. She was stunned. “Why?”
Wen Xi’s face was indifferent. “She deserved to die.”
“What do you mean, deserved to die?”
“Don’t you always curse her to die?”
Every time Wen Xi got money from Kumuai, Jian Yu would help count it and think Kumuai was inhumane—taking way too much.
But she never thought Wen Xi would actually kill her.
“Was it for the money?” Jian Yu knew it couldn’t be that. She’d cursed Kumuai before, and Wen Xi never seemed to care. They had more than enough money now. “So why?”
Wen Xi didn’t hide anything and told her the truth. She thought once she explained, Jian Yu would understand.
But Jian Yu frowned. “How are you any different from that man?”
Wen Xi looked up in disbelief. Her calm tone cracked slightly. “You’re right. No different. We’re all murderers.”
“Well, now you definitely are.” Jian Yu’s eyes were full of disappointment.
Yes, they had killed people too—probably more than that man. But they were just tools, paid to do a job. They never wanted to take someone’s life. Wen Xi, however, chose to kill Kumuai.
Wen Xi didn’t need Jian Yu to say more—she got the message. “So if you find that man, you’re not going to kill him?”
“Of course I am.”
“Then what was all that just now?” Wen Xi picked the roast duck off the floor and set it on the table.
The duck was still warm and fragrant. Jian Yu had also bought cold beer.
…
Before filming, Director Chang called Xu Ling and Qin Cong’an together to go over the scene, especially with Xu Ling.
Though this was an argument scene—and a heavy one involving life, death, and values—it wasn’t meant to be a shouting match. The emotions had to be controlled, and that was hard. Too much and it would feel fake.
“Your emotions need to rise all the way to here,” Chang Ning gestured to his throat, then down to his chest, “but not higher. Hold it here, understand? No matter the conflict, you’re still the most important people to each other. You’ll still eat the duck and drink the beer afterward.”
Xu Ling glanced at Qin Cong’an. Thank goodness she blocked me from entering her room last night. That frustration—wanting to explode but having to hold it back? Yeah, she understood now.
