Chapter 2: “Where Should We Start? Kissing?”
Qin Cong’an’s expression was shadowy. She remained quiet for a moment before speaking in a low voice, “You think coming to see me will help you fall asleep?”
Xu Ling shook her head, unsure of what to say. She knew well enough that coming to her like this was abrupt. She hadn’t even figured out why she came—she just really wanted to see her.
The atmosphere suddenly turned awkward.
Xu Ling’s gaze dropped to the neckline of her bathrobe—more precisely, to the skin exposed beneath. She thought back to how Qin Cong’an looked in that tank top earlier. That incredible body was now hidden under a soft, thin layer of fabric.
Without realizing it, Xu Ling swallowed. Then she asked, “Delays in shooting must be pretty annoying, huh?”
“Mm.” Of course it was annoying.
“We have an intimacy scene coming up later, right?”
“…So?”
“So, to avoid affecting the later schedule, how about… we try it out first?” Xu Ling even found herself ridiculous. But the alcohol had her feeling bold, and it didn’t seem completely unreasonable. She might be a straight woman, but this was just for the movie.
Qin Cong’an looked at her silently—just looked.
Xu Ling tried her best to meet her eyes and not look away, trying to make herself appear righteous. “I’m serious. Should we try it? Just to get in sync, so we’re not fumbling on set later… We’ve got nothing else to do tonight anyway.”
Qin Cong’an still didn’t speak.
Xu Ling couldn’t hold out against that gaze and eventually lowered her eyes, though she made one final attempt to argue.
“It’s all for the sake of art, right? You’re an experienced actress—you probably don’t need this—but I do. Think of it as doing me a favor. Helping me is helping yourself too…”
She kept rambling on when the woman in front of her took two steps forward. Xu Ling realized their toes were almost touching.
She looked up, and it felt like she had fallen into a spiderweb, stuck fast under Qin Cong’an’s gaze.
“You have a point,” Qin Cong’an said, lifting a hand to touch her face. “But… you haven’t showered, and you reek of alcohol. I don’t like it.”
“…” Xu Ling was stunned. Was she dreaming? Did this mean… she agreed!?
“Don’t want to shower? Fine, then we’ll do it first, and you can shower after.”
Xu Ling was dumbfounded. This—wasn’t Qin Cong’an being a little too professional? She’d always known she was a dedicated actress, but she actually let herself be persuaded?
Her body instantly went rigid. The same mouth that had just been preaching about art was now speechless.
But Qin Cong’an was already leaning in, pressing her against the window. She whispered in her ear, “So how do we start? Kissing?”
Xu Ling was completely blank. She barely managed to squeeze out a sound from her throat, but even she didn’t know what it meant.
Qin Cong’an cupped her chin, and their lips met. The taste of grapefruit toothpaste mixed with the thick scent of alcohol.
Soft. Her lips were so soft. The lips she had longed for, now finally touching hers. Xu Ling’s mind went completely blank, her breathing quickened, her heart felt like it would explode.
She couldn’t even tell anymore whether this was a dream or reality. So… she decided to treat it as a dream. If it was a dream, then she could do whatever she wanted, right?
In the muggy rain of night, both their bodies were soaked in sweat. The restrained moans only made the room more humid.
Xu Ling told herself this was just a dream, but the longer it went on, the clearer her mind became. Qin Cong’an’s body was right against hers, and her hand was feeling every inch of that searing warmth. Damn it—she could die in her arms and die happy.
Xu Ling had no idea how many times she came or when she fell asleep.
…
She woke up gasping for air, only to find her nose being pinched. Annoyed, she opened her eyes—and was startled half-awake when she saw Qin Cong’an’s face.
“Director Chang’s looking for you.”
Xu Ling panicked. “What time is it?”
“Eight twenty.”
Ahhhh crap, she was supposed to leave at eight!
She jumped out of bed, her body sore and trembling. She nearly lost her balance. But she had no time to dwell on it—she dashed for the door.
She opened it, peeked out into the hallway, and when she saw it was empty, she hurried back to her own room.
Inside, her manager Yi Huai was on the phone, glaring at her.
“She just opened the door. Sorry, we’ll be down in ten,” Yi Huai said, hanging up.
Before she could get scolded, Xu Ling quickly apologized and ran into the bathroom.
“You’ve got ten minutes,” Yi Huai called after her, going outside to wait.
Xu Ling finished washing up in under three minutes. Her modeling days had taught her speed, but it didn’t matter anymore—she was already late.
In the elevator, Yi Huai’s face was frosty. “Where did you run off to? And you left your phone behind—we couldn’t reach you.”
“…” Xu Ling didn’t know how to explain. What could she say? That she was in Qin Cong’an’s room the whole time? Was she insane?
But she couldn’t think of any better excuse.
Yi Huai glanced at her bowed head. “You went to someone else’s room?”
Xu Ling stayed silent.
Yi Huai’s heels tapped impatiently against the floor. “Just say you overslept. Say you didn’t hear my calls or the knocking. Apologize properly. As for where you were last night—we’ll talk about that later. And don’t let this happen again.”
“I swear it won’t.”
When they reached Director Chang and Assistant Director Liang, Xu Ling immediately got on her knees and apologized.
Chang looked displeased but didn’t say much. “Just focus today. Don’t delay us again.”
“Understood, I promise I won’t.”
This morning’s scene was still of Jian Yu searching for Wen Xi. It required Xu Ling to run nonstop.
Her legs were already sore from yesterday’s filming, and after last night’s “exercise,” they were completely shot.
Luckily, Jian Yu was supposed to be exhausted but still pushing forward—that was exactly where Xu Ling was right now.
During breaks, she sat on a small stool and stared into space.
Qin Cong’an didn’t come to observe the shoot today.
But Xu Ling saw her everywhere—in her mind. Her tilted neck, her delicate collarbones, the soft sounds she made when she breathed, the way she furrowed her brow and grabbed her hair…
Even though she drank so much, she remembered everything in vivid detail. She could replay the whole night in her head.
Now that she thought about it carefully, it didn’t even seem like Qin Cong’an had resisted her. Was she really straight? Or maybe bi?
Xu Ling definitely felt something. No matter what Qin Cong’an did, just a touch made her lose control.
But what did Qin Cong’an feel? Xu Ling wasn’t sure. She worried she hadn’t done well. Despite all her vivid fantasies, last night had still been her first time.
Then a dangerous thought crept in—
How do I compare to her boyfriend?
Just thinking of Xie Jing made Xu Ling want to grind her teeth to dust.
Wait a minute—she suddenly realized something.
She was the other woman.
What???
No, no, wait—hold up!?
“Jian Yu, get ready to shoot,” Liang He called out.
Xu Ling stood frozen, her brain still reeling. She couldn’t react.
“Xu Ling!” he shouted louder.
She finally snapped out of it and ran over.
Director Chang frowned at her. “What’s wrong with you?”
“I’m sorry, sorry.”
Her state clearly wasn’t right, but once the camera rolled, things went relatively smoothly.
Xu Ling was now fully in tune with Jian Yu’s emotions.
Once the film wrapped, she’d never see Qin Cong’an again—just like Jian Yu never found Wen Xi.
“Cut!” Director Chang called, sounding excited. “That was good.”
Although Chang was still unhappy about her earlier tardiness, she was satisfied with the performance—surprisingly so.
Casting Xu Ling in this movie had been a gamble. She’d only played supporting roles before—decent, but all similar: glamorous stars, basically just her playing herself.
But Jian Yu was a real challenge. Xu Ling was a model with no acting background.
Chang had only chosen her because she’d stumbled upon a photo of her and Qin Cong’an at an event and felt an instant spark.
At first, Xu Ling’s acting problems were glaring. She wasn’t as professional as Qin Cong’an and kept breaking character.
But after two weeks, she had improved a lot. And today’s performance—especially those subtle expressions—had even exceeded expectations. She became Jian Yu in that moment, truly searching for Wen Xi.
Xu Ling had no scenes to shoot that afternoon and could rest. She went back to the hotel, collapsed into bed without even showering, and passed out.
By the time she woke, it was nearly dark outside.
They had to shoot a chase scene later—another physically demanding scene.
The film not only focused on the romance between the leads but also had a strong emphasis on action. Before filming started, both actresses had undergone stunt training. Separately.
Now, they had to rehearse together.
Xu Ling sat up, staring out at the darkening sky. The thought of seeing Qin Cong’an again made her arms and legs tremble uncontrollably.
Crap. What should she do?
It was all the alcohol’s fault—otherwise, she’d never have suggested something so absurd. Xu Ling clutched her hair in frustration, practically ready to die.
But wait—Qin Cong’an hadn’t pushed her away.
In fact, she was the one who kissed her first.
So she was guilty too! Okay, fine, maybe Xu Ling was the third party—but Qin Cong’an let it happen!
No, no, this wasn’t about being the other woman—it was a sacrifice for art. That’s right. All for the film.
And besides, Xu Ling thought, she must never let it show that she knew about the boyfriend. Sure, everyone in the industry probably knew about Qin Cong’an and Xie Jing—but she was new! Totally reasonable if she didn’t know.
Yes—totally reasonable!
Xu Ling brainwashed herself until she calmed down—just a little.
Yi Huai called. Xu Ling picked up immediately and headed out.
She entered the elevator. As the doors were closing, someone pressed the button, and the doors opened again.
In walked Qin Cong’an and her assistant, Lin Xinnuo.
“Ling-jie!” Lin greeted her brightly.
Xu Ling nodded and instinctively glanced at Qin Cong’an—only to find her already staring back.
Her legs nearly gave out.
