Chapter 20: [Two-in-One] The Seductive Goblin On Top
Xu Ling’s hand trembled a little. What was Qin Cong’an implying with that sentence? Was she mocking her? Suggesting that a relationship like theirs didn’t warrant such concern or urgency?
“You’re overthinking it. I just hate seeing anyone getting bitten by mosquitoes,” Xu Ling mumbled. “Why haven’t mosquitoes gone extinct yet anyway?”
“Oh? So you’d help anyone who got bitten by a mosquito put on ointment?”
“…Yeah.” Xu Ling insisted on holding onto her good-person identity, finishing applying ointment to Qin Cong’an’s arms and ankles.
It was so hot—the damned weather, damned mosquitoes, and damned Qin Cong’an. She felt like blowing up the whole world.
Xu Ling then pulled out her mosquito repellent and aggressively sprayed it all over Qin Cong’an’s exposed skin.
“So smelly,” Qin Cong’an turned her face away.
“It’s not that bad.” Xu Ling had long grown used to the smell and didn’t find it unpleasant anymore. But after she said that, her pressing became gentler.
When she got to Qin Cong’an’s ankles, she sprayed a whole lot again. These were mosquito hot zones—they needed to be properly protected. Right now, it might not feel bad, but before bed, they’d itch like hell.
Xu Ling also reapplied some on herself. By the time she finished, their break was over and it was time to get back to burying bodies.
When Liang He saw them returning, she quickly said, “Good thing someone saw you two heading to the car. If no one had noticed and we couldn’t find you, we would’ve freaked out. This place is pretty remote. Don’t wander off alone without saying anything.”
“Sorry.”
“Our bad.”
“It’s fine.” Liang He shifted from a stern tone to a spooky one. “We scouted the area in advance, so it’s unlikely we’ll run into bad people. But… other things? That’s not guaranteed.”
She thought she’d at least startle one of them. But one showed no expression, and the other just looked confused.
Alright then. No sense of accomplishment at all.
She didn’t believe it—they were definitely just pretending not to be scared.
Sure enough, just as she finished speaking, Qin Cong’an pointed at Liang He’s arm. Liang He thought something was behind her and jumped in fright.
“What? What is it?”
Qin Cong’an pointed at the mosquito bump on her arm and said to Xu Ling, “Director Liang got bitten too.”
Xu Ling: “…”
Just then, Chang Ning clapped her hands to signal the next shoot was ready.
Xu Ling was incredibly thankful. Thank goodness they had to start filming again; otherwise, she might’ve had to apply ointment for Liang He too. Now she could just hand the medicine over and let her deal with it herself.
Liang He was a bit confused by it all.
Both actresses put on their headlamps and resumed work. There wasn’t much special prep needed—just a few shovels of dirt and sweat was already dripping to the ground, soaking into the soil.
The humidity was unbearable. Just a bit of movement made them sweat buckets.
They finally filled in the burial pit. Xu Ling didn’t even need to act—she plopped down on the ground, completely exhausted.
Wen Xi came to check the details, confirmed nothing was out of place, then walked over and tried to pull Jian Yu up.
Jian Yu acted like she was glued to the ground, whining, “Let me rest a bit, I’m dying here.”
Wen Xi suddenly looked behind her in horror. “Why—why is it climbing out?”
Jian Yu screamed and shot up instantly, only to be dragged away toward the car by Wen Xi.
It wasn’t that Jian Yu was particularly timid because she was young—her courage had never grown much. Though to be fair, there were a few times she only pretended to be scared so she could snuggle into Wen Xi’s arms. Wen Xi was well aware of her acting.
These days were all night shoots, going late into the night and allowing them to sleep during the day.
Since it was the first night, Chang Ning gave them a more relaxed schedule. They wrapped up at 2 a.m. after just one scene.
They all drove for nearly an hour to reach a nearby town’s hotel—or rather, a small guesthouse.
There was no elevator; they had to carry their own luggage upstairs. Fortunately, some of the luggage had already been delivered the day before. The door locks used actual keys. The bathroom didn’t even have a proper toilet, and the shower setup was extremely basic—but at least it was clean. Everyone was just thankful there was air conditioning.
“Thanks for the hard work,” Liang He said to Qin Cong’an.
Qin Cong’an shook her head. “This place is actually pretty good.”
Liang He knew that although Qin Cong’an had star status and a cold aura, she wasn’t a diva. No matter how tough the shoot or how rough the accommodations, she never complained.
Of course, the crew worked even harder. Unlike the two lead actresses, who got their own rooms, the staff were even requesting the owner to squeeze in extra beds.
Xu Ling looked at the size of the guesthouse and knew even renting out the entire place wouldn’t be enough for the whole crew.
She actually didn’t mind sharing a room, as long as it wasn’t the same bed. But she didn’t bring it up. What if Qin Cong’an wasn’t okay with it? If only one of them agreed, she’d look like the one trying to be overly friendly.
Just then, Qin Cong’an turned to her and asked, “Do you mind sharing a room with me?”
Xu Ling froze for a moment. Huh? The two of them? She had originally imagined sharing a room with Sister Huai or another staff member.
“No, I don’t mind.” She quickly replied.
Liang He was even more surprised. “Really?” Once they both nodded to confirm, she immediately asked the owner to move the extra bed into Xu Ling’s room. One extra room freed up meant a bit more space for the crew.
“Thanks, you two. Seems like you really get along, huh?” Liang He smiled.
Xu Ling didn’t respond. Last time Liang He said something similar, she was the one who responded. This time, she wanted to see how Qin Cong’an would reply.
Qin Cong’an said nothing and went upstairs.
Xu Ling gave a stiff smile under Liang He’s gaze. “We’ve been acting together a lot. Just kind of familiar with each other now.”
She slung her bag over her shoulder and followed upstairs. At the room, a crew member arrived with supplies.
Qin Cong’an unlocked the door and walked in.
Once opened, the whole room was in view: a 1.8-meter-wide bed, two nightstands, a TV, a desk, and a single chair. That was it.
“We checked for pinhole cameras already,” the staff member said. “This place is clean, so no worries. Do you want us to add another bed? Though it’ll be quite small.”
“Should we?” Qin Cong’an turned to Xu Ling.
Xu Ling hesitated at the door. The bed could fit two people, sure—but the room was even smaller than she’d imagined.
“No need, this is fine.” She smiled at the crew member.
They placed the disposable supplies on the desk. “Director Liang had someone buy late-night snacks. If you get hungry, feel free to stop by—it’s in the last room on this floor.”
“Alright,” Qin Cong’an replied, closing the door. She sat on the bed and looked at Xu Ling. “You really don’t mind sharing with me? It’s not just because I put you on the spot, right?”
“No, I really don’t.” Though her heart was racing. “I was going to suggest it, actually.”
“Suggest sharing with me?”
Xu Ling hesitated for two seconds and nodded. Not entirely true.
“Oh.” Qin Cong’an turned away, running her fingers across the rough bedsheets. “I figured, that’s why I asked.”
Figured what? Xu Ling hadn’t even thought about rooming with her then!
…Well, maybe she had thought about it—but only because she assumed Qin Cong’an would refuse. So she thought of other options.
But Qin Cong’an actually brought it up first.
Xu Ling didn’t want to keep talking. Feeling the stuffy air, she walked to the window and opened it—only to be hit in the face by a wave of muggy heat.
She rushed to shut it—only to feel an even hotter something press against her from behind. Her breath caught.
…What the hell was she doing?
Qin Cong’an quickly let go and walked to the bathroom. She peeked inside, then turned back and said regretfully, “It’s really small. Looks like it can only fit one person at a time.”
“…” Xu Ling was speechless. “I wasn’t planning to shower with you anyway.”
A bathtub was one thing—but standing together in a shower? That was something else. No, wait—the bathtub wasn’t okay either!
“Oh.” Qin Cong’an moved to close the door. “Then I’ll shower first?”
“Mm.”
Xu Ling closed the window, turned the air conditioning down a few degrees, and took a few deep breaths to calm herself. The room really was so tiny. The more she looked around, the smaller it seemed. She was really going to be living with Qin Cong’an here for a few days.
Suddenly, the bathroom door creaked open again. Qin Cong’an stuck her head out. “I forgot my towel and pajamas.”
Was she doing this on purpose? Trying to seduce her? Xu Ling didn’t think she could handle this kind of temptation.
She tossed the disposable towel and underwear into the bathroom. They were still in their packaging, so it didn’t matter if they got wet.
As for the pajamas—she could grab those herself. Xu Ling didn’t want to rummage through her suitcase and accidentally find something she shouldn’t see…
She tossed the stuff in and practically fled the room, heading toward the back room where the rest of the team had gathered.
She had no idea why her heart was beating so fast. They’d already slept together so many times, but this felt different. The space was so small, so close—it was like they were some broke young couple living together in a tiny master bedroom in a shared apartment.
Xu Ling reached the last room. The door was slightly ajar, so she gave it a polite knock and pushed it open.
Inside, it was lively. People were eating late-night snacks, chatting, and drinking beer. The table was full—grilled skewers, fried rice, porridge—you name it.
Yi Huai had heard that Xu Ling and Qin Cong’an were sharing a room and was a bit surprised. That morning, in the elevator, she’d thought things seemed off between them. And hearing it was Qin Cong’an who brought it up? That didn’t make sense at all.
She still felt something was off, especially seeing how Xu Ling immediately avoided her gaze, looking super guilty.
Meanwhile, Liang He had started telling spooky stories again.
Someone covered their ears, refusing to listen.
Liang He said, “Come on, the mood is perfect! You guys can’t resist telling ghost stories now. You’re all in the film crew—haven’t you experienced something creepy on set before?”
A few people exchanged looks. If they had to be honest… yeah, they had.
People began sharing their stories one by one. Someone even turned off the lights to make the atmosphere extra eerie.
“Ten years ago, I was on a shoot in a place like this—actually even more remote. Barely one bar of cell signal. One night, we wrapped late and it was raining. On the way back to our lodging, suddenly…”
The door creaked open with a loud screech, startling someone into a scream.
Qin Cong’an stood at the doorway, looking at the darkened room. She reached out and flipped on the bright overhead light with a snap.
Everyone stared at her in horror.
She looked toward Xu Ling—her eyes were wide, cheeks puffed out, like a startled squirrel.
“You scared us! We were telling ghost stories!”
“Sorry.” Qin Cong’an’s hair was towel-dried but still damp. She wore a long-sleeved pajama set and sat down next to Xu Ling. “Go on, keep telling.”
She picked up a bottle of cold beer, looked around for an opener, didn’t see one, and just popped the cap off on the edge of the table, taking a swig.
Everyone stared at her.
Was this a commercial shoot or something?
Qin Cong’an looked confused. “No more stories?”
The storyteller cleared their throat and continued. “So suddenly, we saw this white thing appear ahead of us, floating down the slope into the road. You know—it looked like a person. We slowed the car down…”
“And then? And then?”
“And then when we drove up to it, it turned out to be a plastic bag.”
“…”
“But it really scared our driver half to death. If he had panicked too much, we all could’ve been in a serious accident.”
“That’s still pretty creepy,” Liang He said. “But listening to you all talk, it feels like you’re just scaring yourselves. Even the ones that sound the most real feel a little forced. Has no one actually experienced something legit?”
“I did,” Xu Ling said. “But it wasn’t during filming. Can I still share it?”
Everyone looked at her expectantly while continuing to eat.
“It happened when I was abroad. I was staying in a really old hotel that used to be a noble’s manor or something. I was sharing a room with another model…” Xu Ling paused strangely, then added, “Two beds.”
Qin Cong’an took another sip of her beer.
“It was really late. We were both asleep, and I was in a half-dreamy state when I felt like someone was talking to me. I opened my eyes and saw a very blurry, semi-transparent female ghost lying on top of me.”
Someone quickly asked, “What was she wearing?”
“A really fancy nightgown. Sort of whitish-pink? She looked like a noble lady.”
“A foreign ghost, huh? Wait, what do you mean lying on top of you—what kind of position?”
“Just lying on top!” Xu Ling gestured. “And she was talking in my ear.”
“What did she say?”
“I don’t know. I could tell she was talking, but I couldn’t understand her—like a bunch of scrambled code.”
Some were scared, others more curious. “Why does that sound kinda sexy?”
“…It wasn’t!” Xu Ling quickly clarified. “It was terrifying! And here’s the scary part—at first I thought it was just a dream or sleep paralysis from stress. But the next morning, the model I was rooming with said she woke up in the middle of the night and saw that same figure lying on top of me.”
“The ghost didn’t go to her bed?”
“Nope.”
Liang He initially found it creepy, but remembering the time Xu Ling got harassed at the club, she started laughing. “Are you sure it wasn’t just a pervy ghost hitting on you?”
“…I shouldn’t have told this story,” Xu Ling muttered, completely unprepared for this angle.
Liang He, who was actually a little spooked, was trying to play it off lightheartedly. “Maybe the ghost had never seen such a pretty little Asian cutie before and just wanted to play.”
Qin Cong’an finished her beer and stood up, walking out of the room.
Xu Ling stayed a little longer but didn’t want to get teased anymore, so she headed back to their room.
When she opened the door, she found Qin Cong’an already lying on the bed, scrolling through her phone. Xu Ling licked her lips, said nothing, locked the door, and went to shower—her whole body felt sticky and uncomfortable.
After her shower, Xu Ling changed into a long nightshirt, dried her hair, and climbed into the other side of the bed.
Thank goodness for air conditioning—otherwise, she didn’t know how she’d fall asleep in this heat.
Xu Ling leaned against the headboard and played on her phone for a bit. Even though she was very aware of the person next to her, she soon got sleepy. It was already past 4 a.m., and if she stayed up any longer, it’d be morning soon. Thankfully, they could sleep in until afternoon.
“Was the ghost pretty?” Qin Cong’an suddenly asked.
Xu Ling was so sleepy the voice sounded almost ethereal, like it was coming from the underworld.
She turned toward her, confused. “Huh?” What kind of question was that? Why did it matter if the ghost was pretty?
“Was the ghost pretty?” Qin Cong’an repeated, as if she really cared about the answer.
“I don’t remember,” Xu Ling said, putting her phone down and closing her eyes. “I was scared out of my mind. I wasn’t paying attention to that.”
“But you do remember she was wearing a whitish-pink nightgown.”
“Because that covered most of her body! And I also remember she had long hair—brown and wavy.” Xu Ling added, “She was probably quite pretty.”
“Oh.”
“Are your mosquito bites itchy? I can put on some more ointment if they are.”
Qin Cong’an looked down and replied softly, “Put it on for me.”
Xu Ling got out of bed, grabbed the ointment, climbed back up, and pulled her arm over to gently apply the cream.
While she was doing that, her face was suddenly cupped and lifted. Qin Cong’an leaned in and kissed her.
The drowsiness vanished instantly. The unexpected kiss shocked her awake. But as soon as she caught up, she kissed her back—it tasted slightly bitter from leftover beer, not fully masked by toothpaste.
“Why?” Xu Ling asked.
“What?”
“Why did you kiss me all of a sudden?”
Qin Cong’an shrugged. “I don’t know. I just wanted to.”
Xu Ling’s heart pounded furiously. She swallowed hard and tried to imitate her calm tone. “Oh. I thought maybe you liked me.”
Qin Cong’an smiled.
“Even ghosts like you. Of course I like you too.”
“…Why are you so hung up on that ghost story?” Without the earlier sentence, Xu Ling would’ve taken that as a full-on confession. “You’ve really been led astray by Director Liang. That experience was seriously terrifying.”
Qin Cong’an didn’t respond.
Xu Ling sighed and moved down to the foot of the bed to apply ointment to her ankle.
After finishing, she was about to put the ointment away, but just as she leaned forward toward the nightstand, she was suddenly pulled back—Qin Cong’an wrapped her arms around her waist and pressed her underneath her.
“Was it like this position?” Qin Cong’an asked, lying on top of her.
Xu Ling swallowed and nodded.
“Still scared now?”
That had happened a long time ago. She wasn’t scared anymore—especially since nothing like that had ever happened in China. Still, she nodded again.
“So pitiful,” Qin Cong’an whispered in her ear. “Then let me help you desensitize.”
Xu Ling wasn’t sure whether that ghost had been pretty, but this seductive woman on top of her right now… she was definitely dangerously tempting.
They both slept in until 3 p.m., not fully awake even then—just glanced at their phones and fell back asleep. It wasn’t until dinner that they actually got up.
Just in time too—someone had brought food. Qin Cong’an picked up two meals and brought them back to the room for them to eat together.
After dinner, they left for the filming location.
As soon as they stepped out of the hotel, a wave of heat hit them.
Everyone was grumbling. “When’s that rain coming? This humidity’s killing us.”
They reached the set and began prep. Qin Cong’an was digging in a new spot today.
After filming a few takes, some crew helped dig the pit to save energy.
Today’s scene was about the two characters burying a body when they thought someone was coming.
Jian Yu quickly jumped into the pit and hid with Wen Xi. All the lights were turned off, and they pulled out their guns.
Luckily, it was a false alarm. But when they left, they realized Jian Yu’s chocolate mushrooms in the car had been stolen.
Jian Yu wailed, while Wen Xi calmly said, “Looks like whoever it was cares about your health and didn’t want you eating too many sweets.”
The scene of the two characters hiding in the pit was hard to shoot. Director Chang Ning kept adjusting the camera angle, adding and removing props, until they finally found the perfect shot.
Xu Ling curled up in Qin Cong’an’s arms. They both smelled of mosquito repellent—the same one Qin Cong’an had previously said smelled terrible.
At this moment, Jian Yu wasn’t so much scared as she was thrilled to be this close to Wen Xi. She stared at her face until Wen Xi shoved her head into her chest.
When Qin Cong’an grabbed Xu Ling’s head, her ears started burning. Xu Ling seriously suspected she had a kink for this. The rougher Qin Cong’an was, the more she liked it.
Pressed into her chest, Xu Ling could no longer smell the repellent—only her own natural scent. She already knew all the hair and body products Qin Cong’an used, and none of them smelled like this. It was a unique, natural fragrance she gave off—one that made Xu Ling want to lick her.
“Cut!”
Xu Ling was released, eyes slightly unfocused.
Qin Cong’an asked, “Did you bump your nose?”
Xu Ling shook her head. “It’s soft.”
“….”
Whether it was her imagination or not, Xu Ling felt like in the next few takes, Qin Cong’an was holding her even tighter.
They filmed until after 4 a.m., and it finally seemed like it might rain. Everyone could smell the change in the air.
Both leads were drenched in sweat again. After returning to the room, they took turns showering.
It finally began to rain—a long, drizzly kind of rain. It wasn’t a proper downpour, so the heat didn’t break completely. Still stuffy, but at least the temperature dropped a little.
The group planned to go into town to eat and check out a nearby waterfall that was a 4A-rated scenic spot.
Xu Ling and Qin Cong’an were going to join, but just as they were about to leave, Xu Ling felt a dull ache in her lower abdomen. Her period had arrived. No outing for her.
She informed the others and slipped into the bathroom.
She didn’t expect to come out and find Qin Cong’an sitting on the bed holding a box of painkillers.
“You’re not going either?”
“Didn’t really want to,” Qin Cong’an handed her the medicine. Xu Ling had mentioned earlier that her period pains could be brutal, and her face was visibly pale now.
Xu Ling opened the box and took one pill. She had her own supply, but didn’t feel like getting it.
“You’ve been on set for two months—is this your first one?” Qin Cong’an frowned. Her reaction seemed severe, but she hadn’t noticed anything like this before.
“Yeah, I’m irregular,” Xu Ling replied. “Sometimes once every two months, sometimes every three.”
Qin Cong’an pulled her to sit down and lie back on the bed, covering her abdomen with the blanket. “You’re way too skinny.”
“I’m doing okay. I know a girl who only gets it once a year.”
“You can’t compare yourself to abnormal cases.”
“People like you, with regular cycles and no pain, are the real rare ones,” Xu Ling said, touching her arm. “So healthy and beautiful.”
“What are you doing?”
“Just… touching. It feels nice. Makes the pain go away.”
Qin Cong’an raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t the painkiller kick in already?”
“Painkillers don’t work that fast.” Xu Ling lifted the blanket. “Come under the covers with me… since you’re not going anywhere.”
“Mm.” Qin Cong’an climbed in and lay next to her. “I’ll warm your tummy this time.”
Xu Ling felt like she was acting like her girlfriend.
Just as the thought crossed her mind, she noticed Qin Cong’an looking at her phone.
Xu Ling turned her head away—she didn’t want to see anything on that screen that would sting.
“Look,” Qin Cong’an said, holding up her phone. “This is probably where they’re going. Looks nice.”
Xu Ling glanced briefly before looking away. “So do you want to go or not?”
Qin Cong’an leaned on her shoulder without answering, still scrolling through pictures of the scenic spot. After a while, she switched to looking up North City, found another nature spot with a resort hotel and hot springs.
“This one looks good too,” she said, swiping through the photos and handing the phone over, as if recommending a getaway.
