Chapter 29: “Still not being honest enough?”
Neither of them spoke in the bathtub. Qin Cong’an reached out, grabbing Xu Ling’s ankle and gently massaging her calf—it was even warmer than the water. It was an oddly intimate scene: both of them were still clothed, soaking in water that was steadily rising.
Xu Ling caught Qin Cong’an’s hand to stop her from touching further. She kept listening intently to the sounds outside. Sister Quan hadn’t left yet, so she didn’t dare do anything at all.
But Qin Cong’an wasn’t fazed. She leaned in to nibble lightly on Xu Ling’s trembling lips. The wine was definitely consumed by Xu Ling—her whole body was hot, even her tongue carried a faint grape aroma.
Xu Ling cursed her own mouth. Why would she open it now? Her heart was pounding as if they were having a secret affair. Even the sound of her breathing felt too loud, though the running water helped cover it.
Qin Cong’an, sensing her trembling, was tempted to tease her. She pulled her closer, wrapping her legs around Xu Ling’s and continued her kisses. Xu Ling pushed her away, but she didn’t stop. After all, Xu Ling wouldn’t dare say anything aloud right now. She could only stifle her moans and quietly endure Qin Cong’an’s gentle exploration.
Unfortunately, Xu Ling clung tightly to her clothes and wouldn’t let her take them off.
Qin Cong’an didn’t understand why she was so insistent—what was so wrong with sharing a bath?
Xu Ling was terrified that Sister Quan might suddenly walk in. Rationally, she knew that wouldn’t happen. Who walks in on someone else taking a bath without knocking? But still—this situation wasn’t normal!
Sure enough, not long after, they heard a knock on the bathroom door.
“Hey, Qin Cong’an, are you alright?” Gao Quan called from outside. She couldn’t figure out why Qin Cong’an had suddenly laughed—maybe she misheard? Or maybe it wasn’t laughter but a pained sound? She remembered hearing that Xu Ling once fainted on set, and she didn’t want something similar happening to Qin Cong’an.
Qin Cong’an didn’t respond. Instead, she pulled Xu Ling’s neckline loose and kissed the newly exposed skin, sucking softly and letting the water make a sound.
Xu Ling was utterly panicked. She tugged Qin Cong’an’s hair in desperation, silently urging her to answer.
Qin Cong’an finally made a sound—though it was obviously a pained groan.
Then came two loud knocks. “Hey! I’m coming in!”
“Jie,” Qin Cong’an finally spoke, sounding lazy. “Stop bothering me. Go get some rest.”
“You scared me to death. You could’ve just said something.” Gao Quan let out a sigh of relief. “I’m heading out then. Don’t drink too much.”
Their footsteps slowly faded.
“You—” Qin Cong’an had just opened her mouth when Xu Ling slapped her hand over it tightly. Qin Cong’an stuck out her tongue and licked her palm.
Xu Ling’s hand tingled from the ticklish sensation. She glanced at Qin Cong’an’s eyes and felt like she’d gone insane. Now that the sound outside had completely disappeared and she heard the front door close, she finally let go and slumped down into the water, utterly exhausted.
Qin Cong’an held her by the waist, keeping her from slipping too far and resumed their earlier conversation. “You really pulled my hair hard. It hurts.”
“Serves you right,” Xu Ling huffed. “What if she had walked in? Do you want to get caught?”
“But she didn’t.”
“She almost did!”
“But she didn’t,” Qin Cong’an repeated, undoing the tie in Xu Ling’s hair. Her long hair cascaded down into the water.
Xu Ling was about to explode from frustration. She had been scared out of her mind, and Qin Cong’an still acted so nonchalantly. She didn’t speak anymore—just glared at her.
“Alright, I’m sorry,” Qin Cong’an gently stroked her cheek. “Seeing you willing to bathe with me made me a little too excited.”
“I wasn’t willing! I was forced to hide in there!” Xu Ling swatted her hand away and tried to get up.
Qin Cong’an quickly wrapped her arms around her thighs, preventing her from standing. Looking up, she asked, “Really not going to bathe with me?”
Soaked and dripping, Qin Cong’an suddenly looked oddly pitiful. Xu Ling nearly relented with a “Fine, let’s bathe together,” but instead, she stubbornly said, “Of course not.”
Qin Cong’an, just as stubborn, refused to let go.
“Let me go already! I don’t want to bathe with you!” Xu Ling felt like if she didn’t break free soon, she’d truly lose control.
Qin Cong’an stared at her for a moment, then finally let go, but pressed down on her shoulder and stood up.
She stepped out of the tub and began stripping off her soaked clothes.
Xu Ling stared at her back, at the slowly revealed curves. She wanted so badly to reach out and pull her back, but held herself back. In her heart, she whispered, Please turn around…
But Qin Cong’an never turned. She simply put on a dry bathrobe and walked out.
Xu Ling watched the door close, feeling unexpectedly disappointed. Maybe she should have bathed with her. No—she couldn’t let her get her way.
She climbed out of the tub and locked the bathroom door. Only then did she take off her wet clothes.
As she soaked in the hot water, the half bottle of wine she drank earlier began to take full effect. Her body felt hot, her head fuzzy, and her heart raced uncomfortably. She didn’t stay long, quickly got out, drained the tub, and took a quick shower before leaving the bathroom.
Qin Cong’an was lying on the bed, sipping wine and reading a book. She didn’t look at her the way she usually did when Xu Ling came out.
Xu Ling swallowed hard. She could sense that Qin Cong’an was angry, but what right did she have to be mad? She scared her half to death and still wanted some kind of reward? Dream on.
But her clothes were all wet—she couldn’t go back to her room. Yes, that’s the only reason she stayed. It wasn’t because she wanted to be near her.
Wrapped in a towel, Xu Ling climbed into bed. “Go shower,” she said.
Qin Cong’an put down her book and wine without looking at her. She pulled a T-shirt from the drawer and tossed it over, along with her own pajama pants, then went to shower.
Xu Ling wrinkled her nose and changed into the oversized T-shirt. It was so loose it barely covered her bottom.
Normally, Qin Cong’an didn’t take long in the shower, but this time she was clearly sulking—it took ages.
Xu Ling got bored and picked up her book. Sure enough, she hadn’t even finished the first page before she yawned and closed her eyes.
But she didn’t really fall asleep—or maybe just entered a light doze. As soon as the bed dipped beside her, she woke up. She kept her eyes shut, waiting for a kiss.
Nothing happened.
Damn it. Are we cold-warring now?
Xu Ling moved her hand, reaching toward her. She touched her thigh, but Qin Cong’an quickly shifted away.
“…!” Xu Ling opened her eyes, rolled over to face her, and said, “Qin Cong’an.”
“Mm?”
“Why aren’t you talking?”
“What should I say?” Qin Cong’an didn’t look away from her book, her face unreadably calm.
Xu Ling wanted to bite her out of frustration but just leaned closer, took her book, and put it down. “I was in a bad mood and came to you. Then you came back with Sister Quan, and I got scared and hid in the bathroom. I was on the verge of a breakdown and you still teased me like that—so yes, I’m mad. Now tell me, what are you mad about?”
Qin Cong’an immediately replied, “Obviously, because you wouldn’t bathe with me.”
“Listen to yourself! Does that make any sense?!”
“Why not? We were already soaked. You still refused. Isn’t that unreasonable?”
“What’s unreasonable is you turning on the water in the first place!”
Qin Cong’an stared at her. “But you didn’t turn it off either.”
“…!” Xu Ling went silent. True. Why didn’t she? Okay, she knew—deep down, she did want to bathe with her. She took a deep breath and said, “Because when people are scared, they don’t think straight!”
Qin Cong’an looked away, reaching for her book again as if that excuse didn’t hold water.
Xu Ling sat up and continued complaining, “Also, every time you get mad you go silent—that’s the worst! I don’t even know how you plan on dating like this…”
Her mouth was faster than her brain. She only realized what she said after it came out, and tried to stop, though it was already too late.
Sure enough, Qin Cong’an’s expression shifted slightly. She paused and looked up at Xu Ling.
Xu Ling felt her skin crawl under that gaze. She wanted to change the subject but anything she said now would just sound awkward. Then Qin Cong’an spoke first.
“So… do you want to date me?”
“…!” Xu Ling was stunned. Was this one of those classic toxic lines like, I’ll break up with her, just give me time, but in reality never does? Just stringing her along?
“Don’t joke,” she muttered, rolling over and pulling up the blanket to go to sleep.
“Alright, I got it,” Qin Cong’an said softly, leaning in and gently resting against her back. Her voice was low and tender, almost pleading. “I’ll change first. I won’t stop talking to you anymore.”
Xu Ling felt like crying. Why did it sound like she was really being coaxed? Why did it feel like she was actually falling in love, even though she knew it was all just an illusion?
“Then let me ask you—why were you so insistent on bathing together?” Qin Cong’an whispered in her ear.
“…Because I just didn’t want to,” Xu Ling said.
If she refused, maybe she’d be remembered. Maybe she wouldn’t be so easily forgotten.
Qin Cong’an nuzzled her neck and tugged at the hem of her shirt.
“I’ve got a question too,” Xu Ling interrupted her. “Why do you want to bathe together so badly?”
“I want you to be completely honest with me.”
Xu Ling was dumbfounded. “I’m lying in your bed without any underwear. Isn’t that honest enough?”
“Then if you can do that in bed, why not in the bath?”
Xu Ling didn’t know how to answer. She couldn’t tell the truth. So she turned around, trying to coax her. “I just didn’t want to, okay? Maybe someday I will.”
But she knew that day would never come. Just remember this, Qin Cong’an.
“Okay. Someday,” Qin Cong’an said, looking into her eyes.
Xu Ling avoided her gaze and looked at her chest instead. Despite everything, she was still weak—she rested her face against her, skin hot against cool, and instantly felt alive again.
As her mind went blank, Xu Ling imagined being in a relationship with Qin Cong’an.
They had a big fight, yelling all their worst flaws at each other. Then she apologized first, just to eat a snack. But Qin Cong’an, still mad, slapped her across the face.
Damn… that felt good.
All the fragmented shots had finally been completed. Only the final major scene remained: Jian Yu and Wen Xi find the man and devise a plan, but Wen Xi accidentally encounters him outside. She follows him, is discovered, knocked unconscious, and taken to his place.
Wen Xi’s tracking skills are so good that even trained professionals might miss her. That’s when she realizes—maybe Ku Ai Ning refused to reveal his whereabouts because he’s just too dangerous.
Chang Ning clapped her hands and announced, “If all goes well, we’ll be wrapping up in ten days. Let’s give it our all to the very end. Thank you, everyone!”
Xu Ling did a mental countdown—only ten days left.
