Chapter 3: “What do you mean day and night together!”
Lin Xinnuo made some polite small talk: “No idea how late we’ll be filming tonight. So exhausting.”
Xu Ling kept nodding. “Yeah.” Her voice was a bit dry, even trembling slightly.
Qin Cong’an showed not even a hint of anything unusual—still that same cool, beautiful persona—as if nothing at all had happened between them last night.
When the elevator reached the first floor, Lin Xinnuo waved at her manager and ran ahead to greet the crew.
The two of them followed behind. Xu Ling quickened her pace.
Qin Cong’an was a bit shorter, but she kept up easily, asking, “Did you get scolded this morning?”
“…No,” Xu Ling replied. “Scolding me would’ve wasted even more time.”
“True. We wouldn’t want to delay progress.”
It was a random comment, but Xu Ling felt like she understood what she meant. Their pleasure last night—just to avoid delaying the filming schedule.
Yes, exactly. That was her purpose too—not because she liked her too much, or was too drawn to her body.
Qin Cong’an had simply agreed with that purpose, a shared commitment to the craft. It was purely artistic devotion—not cheating.
They arrived at the filming location.
Xu Ling fiddled with her prop gun, taking the magazine out and sliding it back in again. The click-clack helped her calm down.
She was a killer on a mission. Just like how, even after arguing, Jian Yu and Wen Xi still completed their missions—she and Qin Cong’an, after sleeping together, would still finish filming together.
The two displayed great chemistry in their chase scenes, though the focus of the scene was on the fight with the enemy, so there weren’t many interactions between them.
During the gunfight, Jian Yu got shot in the shoulder. But Wen Xi ignored her and kept chasing the target.
After neutralizing the enemies and disposing of the bodies, the two returned home as if nothing had happened—arguing on the way because Jian Yu wanted ice cream and Wen Xi didn’t let her buy it.
This stretch of scenes took longer than expected—after a week, it still wasn’t finished.
Qin Cong’an had to return to Beicheng for an endorsement event and asked for two days off. Director Chang Ning naturally agreed.
The team filmed Xu Ling’s scenes for the next couple of days, though it was a relatively easy schedule.
Yi Huai also returned to Beicheng for some business, not having had time yet to speak with Xu Ling.
Xu Ling treasured this rare downtime. She returned to the hotel early to rest but couldn’t fall asleep no matter how she tossed and turned.
She couldn’t stop thinking about the phone call she overheard before—how Qin Cong’an was returning home, how Xie Jing had asked to meet her… Had they met up?
And if they did, what happened?
Xu Ling had only found out about their “not-so-secret” secret after entering the industry, through some casual gossip on set.
There had been paparazzi photos of them dining together, though both parties publicly stated they were just friends.
But within the industry, it was well-known—they weren’t friends, but lovers. Supposedly both had admitted it in private. They didn’t make it public to avoid unnecessary trouble.
Sometimes, you don’t want to look at something, but you just can’t help it.
Like picking at a scab even though it hurts.
Xu Ling searched for “Qin Cong’an + Xie Jing” and found tons of fan-edited couple videos.
Fans shipped them half-jokingly, half-seriously, but knowing the truth made it even more obvious to Xu Ling that the two were real.
Unlike those fake contractual couples, they didn’t share matching items, or even many public appearances together, never acted in the same drama. On the surface, they had no connection. Just a few shared appearances at events—but eagle-eyed fans picked up on the tiniest details.
Like exchanging glances across a crowd, or Xie Jing adjusting Qin Cong’an’s dress… These “candies” were solid. What fans loved most was seeing a different side of Qin Cong’an when she was with Xie Jing.
Off-screen, Qin Cong’an was cold as ice. Even when promoting CPs for shows, she kept a polite distance, always aloof.
But with Xie Jing, her expressions changed. She’d even make faces that could be interpreted as “impatience.”
It might seem like they didn’t get along, but anyone who followed Qin Cong’an knew—she rarely smiled, but never showed that kind of rude expression either. So clearly, her relationship with Xie Jing wasn’t ordinary.
Qin Cong’an was considered top-tier, successful in both film and TV. Her roles were always hits. Unfortunately, her luck with awards was bad—every time she got nominated, a veteran actor would swoop in and win.
She’d done some bad films, but never a bad role. Her popularity came from role after role, steadily building over the years.
Outside of acting, she didn’t attend many events—just ceremonies or brand deals.
Xie Jing had a strong career too. He skyrocketed to stardom through a historical idol drama, with endorsements piling up and his name constantly trending.
Truth be told, they were a pretty well-matched pair.
Still, Xu Ling found it hard to imagine someone as icy as Qin Cong’an dating someone as loud and flashy as Xie Jing. But love, after all, doesn’t follow logic.
She didn’t even know why she liked her either. Maybe it was just a feeling—just one look, and she was hooked.
Publicly, Xu Ling had said she switched from modeling because she was “retiring at the right age.”
But truthfully, she could’ve walked for years more. She just wanted to get closer to Qin Cong’an. And now, she had succeeded.
Just… in a way that couldn’t see the light of day.
The more Xu Ling watched their videos, the less she could sleep. Eventually, she tossed the phone aside, shoved her thoughts away, and forced herself to fall asleep.
…
The next day, one of Xu Ling’s old model friends came to visit on set.
Meng Bai had retired from modeling too—but purely because she’d made enough money and wanted to enjoy a peaceful life. She didn’t want to keep rushing around every day.
She was only in Wucheng to eat good food—and to see Xu Ling.
Meng Bai brought a ton of food, all on Xu Ling’s tab. She sat on a little stool watching Xu Ling act, finding it all pretty unbelievable.
During a break, Meng Bai asked, “Do you actually find acting fun?”
“It is,” Xu Ling replied. Though her motives weren’t pure, she genuinely enjoyed acting now—especially with interesting scripts and characters.
“I think it’s so boring. Watching you shoot one scene over and over—it’s so cringey, help.” Meng Bai rubbed her arms, pretending to shiver.
“Don’t you have any faith in the process?” Modeling had also required conviction and imagination.
Meng Bai wrinkled her nose. “Whatever, I think it’s awkward. But you looked cool handling the gun. Kinda makes me want to try.”
It was just a prop, but Xu Ling couldn’t let outsiders handle it so casually. Still, she checked with the prop director, who surprisingly agreed—probably helped that Meng Bai had shared food with everyone and was super friendly.
Meng Bai had a great personality—bold, cheerful, full of energy.
Back when they modeled together and were starving for days, everyone was cranky—but Meng Bai was like a little Pikachu, bouncing around, always cracking jokes.
Nothing ever seemed to get her down. But no one would’ve guessed she was the first to leave the agency out of their whole group.
Her high energy wasn’t fake—you can’t fake that for years. But exhaustion was real too.
With Meng Bai around, the atmosphere on set was unexpectedly lively.
Everyone liked her. Xu Ling was happy too—it felt nice to have a friend around backing her up.
The two tall girls, sitting together with their long legs, made quite a sight. The behind-the-scenes photographer kept aiming the camera at them.
Jian Yu and Wen Xi used different pistols—a black PPS M2 and a black V10.
Xu Ling was already familiar with her regular gun but hadn’t handled the V10 before. Since Qin Cong’an wasn’t around, the prop master let them play around with it a bit.
They were fiddling with the guns when they heard a commotion nearby.
Xu Ling looked up—and there she was: Qin Cong’an.
She had taken two days off, and Xu Ling had thought she’d return on the morning flight the next day.
It had only been a day and a half, but knowing she’d gone back to Beicheng and seen her boyfriend—time seemed to stretch from the sour ache in her chest.
Qin Cong’an was speaking to Liang He, not looking in their direction. Xu Ling took the opportunity to quietly stare at her. She was dressed simply—probably came straight from the airport—but that simplicity suited her perfectly.
She wore frameless glasses, looking totally different from Wen Xi again. More intellectual, like a gentle older sister.
Then she looked over.
Okay, maybe not so gentle—those eyes were icy cold.
Xu Ling looked away, returning her focus to the gun in her hand.
Meng Bai leaned in and whispered, “Is Qin Cong’an straight?”
Xu Ling was so startled she almost dropped the gun. She glared. “Why are you asking that?”
“My gaydar is going off,” Meng Bai whispered even quieter, leaning closer. “I never felt anything before, but now it’s beeping like crazy. So, is she? You’ve been living in close quarters for over half a month—you must know a bit, right?”
Xu Ling nearly died inside. “What do you mean living in close quarters day and night!”
Meng Bai gave her a strange look. “Why are you so jumpy?”
“Stop saying weird stuff.” Xu Ling rolled her wide eyes and whispered, “Don’t speculate. Whether she is or isn’t—that’s her private business.”
“I’m just gossiping, it’s not like I’m posting it online. Why so serious?” Meng Bai gave her a look. Xu Ling was never the serious type—she usually loved gossiping with her.
Xu Ling’s heart was still racing. Scared her to death.
Wait—was Meng Bai implying that Qin Cong’an used to be straight, but something changed after sleeping with her?
That would be way too obvious. Xu Ling absolutely didn’t want anyone finding out about what happened between them.
