Chapter 4: “Wanna Shower Together?”
Meng Bai knew that Qin Cong’an had been away from the crew for the past two days to attend an event in Beicheng. She asked, “Why did she rush back? Does she have any scenes to shoot tonight?”
“Not sure. Director Chang hasn’t said anything about continuing last time’s scenes tonight, but you never know.” Xu Ling replied uncertainly.
She got her answer soon enough. There were no scenes for Qin Cong’an that evening. Xu Ling just had to shoot one scene of her waiting in line for late-night snacks, and then she was wrapped for the day.
She even overheard Director Chang asking, “Why didn’t you say anything in advance? If I knew you were coming back today, I would’ve had someone prepare. But it’s fine. We did agree to give you two days off, and I won’t go back on my word. Just rest up well and be in good shape tomorrow.”
So why did she come back early? Xu Ling couldn’t figure it out. Could it be she had a fight with her boyfriend and just booked the earliest flight back?
Xu Ling sighed quietly and started fiddling with the prop gun again, using the familiar clicking sound to calm herself down.
They had a quick dinner. Meng Bai stayed with Xu Ling while she wrapped up filming, planning to hang out afterward.
It was a rare chance, and Xu Ling naturally agreed. She’d never gotten the chance to hang out with Meng Bai outside of work in another city—this felt like a mini trip between best friends.
Xu Ling wrapped up filming smoothly.
But just as she was about to leave, Yi Huai walked over.
“You didn’t forget what I told you last time, did you?” Yi Huai looked serious. She finally had time to talk about Xu Ling disappearing in the middle of the night the other day.
“But my friend—”
“It’s fine. Just come to my room as soon as you get back.”
“Okay, no problem,” Xu Ling agreed. She knew she couldn’t dodge this and had no choice but to say yes.
Meng Bai, who was right there, was full of curiosity. As soon as they got in the car, she asked, “What’s going on? Your agent looked so serious. What did you do?”
“Don’t ask. Let me save a little face.” Xu Ling tried to deflect with a joke.
But Meng Bai wouldn’t let it go. “Come on, tell me! What could’ve happened on set? Did you delay filming? What were you doing that caused the delay? You seemed to act really well today though. That assistant director—what’s his name, Liang?—he kept praising you. So is it a people problem?”
“I beg you, stop guessing.” If she kept guessing, she might really hit the truth.
“Fine, fine,” Meng Bai said, seeing she really didn’t want to talk about it. She let it go… for now. But one day, she’d dig it out of her.
The two of them visited a few of Wucheng’s most famous spots, admired the night view. It was too crowded everywhere, so they stayed in the car. Eventually, they arrived at a bar street and finally got out.
Meng Bai loved going to bars. Every time she visited a new city, she had to visit the bars—it was the only way she could feel the real vibe of the place.
Xu Ling wasn’t that interested in “vibes,” but she did love drinking—especially creative cocktails—so she was happy to tag along.
They hit up several bars in one night, sampling all the signature drinks. Overall, the quality was great, and they had a blast.
Meng Bai was having the time of her life and wanted to hit a few more bars until everything closed. But Xu Ling had filming the next morning—and an impending interrogation from her agent.
She had to head back. Meng Bai, still wanting to party, got dragged back too.
There was no way she was leaving a drunk, gorgeous woman alone at a bar. They’d already been approached so many times that night.
As models with some fame, they weren’t super recognizable, but just their looks alone were enough to attract attention.
After dropping Meng Bai off at her hotel, Xu Ling returned to the crew’s hotel.
Back in her room, she planned to wash up first. She knew she wouldn’t be able to give Yi Huai a satisfying answer—Yi Huai would definitely be pissed. If she showed up reeking of alcohol, she’d be even more pissed.
Just as Xu Ling was about to start her routine, there was a knock at the door.
Yi Huai came to find her herself? Fine. Better to talk in her own room—at least that gave her a tiny bit of home-field advantage.
Xu Ling opened the door—and froze.
It wasn’t Yi Huai.
It was Qin Cong’an.
Without looking at her, Qin Cong’an walked in calmly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Just like when Xu Ling had gone to her room before, Qin Cong’an now walked to the window, looked outside silently.
Xu Ling remained frozen by the door, afraid to even turn around.
Why was she here?
After several moments of mental prep, Xu Ling finally turned around and walked toward her. Qin Cong’an still had her back to her. Her nape looked so slender and beautiful—it made Xu Ling want to kiss it.
Then Qin Cong’an turned and said, “Drank that much again?”
“Mm… my friend’s here. Haven’t seen her in a while.”
“Oh,” Qin Cong’an responded coolly. Then, she walked over, reached out, and began unbuttoning Xu Ling’s shirt, one by one.
??
Xu Ling was stunned. When the shirt slipped past her shoulders, she grabbed it, her rationality kicking in for a moment.
Qin Cong’an paused and looked at her. Don’t want to? her eyes asked.
Xu Ling swallowed, shook her head, and let go of the shirt, letting her take it off.
Qin Cong’an took her by the wrist and led her to the bed, gave her a gentle push. Xu Ling sat down, and Qin Cong’an straddled her.
Xu Ling’s entire body flushed. Her hands instinctively went to her waist, and the second she touched her, a shiver ran from her spine to her brain.
Her kiss came down, still tasting like grapefruit, blending surprisingly well with Xu Ling’s alcohol-soaked breath.
Xu Ling lost all rational thought. Nothing else mattered—only that she had come to her.
…
All her senses seemed to be enveloped in a fog. But the increasingly loud knocking on the door still pierced through to her ears.
“Uh…” Xu Ling gritted her teeth and called for a pause. Qin Cong’an lifted her head, looking at her.
“It’s probably my agent.”
Of course Qin Cong’an had heard. But she acted like she hadn’t, burying her face again.
Xu Ling’s skin prickled all over. She tilted her head back unconsciously. But the persistent knocking kept dragging her back to reality.
She begged her to stop.
Qin Cong’an finally relented but slid up to hug her waist and asked, “What if she comes in? What do I do?”
Xu Ling glanced toward the bathroom. “Can you… hide in there?”
Qin Cong’an flopped onto her back, staring at the ceiling, seemingly annoyed.
“Fine, I’ll go talk to her.” Xu Ling started scrambling to get dressed. “You… want to stay here and wait for me?”
Qin Cong’an didn’t reply.
Xu Ling thought she seemed a little upset. Well, fair. Anyone would be annoyed getting interrupted halfway. But she had no choice—she’d promised Yi Huai.
Who knew she’d show up first—and start undressing her without saying a word?
Xu Ling walked to the door and opened it.
Yi Huai stood there, angry. “Didn’t I tell you to come to my room as soon as you got back? If I hadn’t checked with the front desk, I wouldn’t have known you came back long ago.”
“…Sorry. I was going to shower first.”
“How long does that take?” Yi Huai pushed her way in.
Xu Ling quickly blocked her. “Sis, let’s go to your room to talk.”
Yi Huai looked at her suspiciously. “Someone else in here?”
Xu Ling shook her head. “Of course not.”
Yi Huai didn’t believe her. She walked further in, even entered the bedroom. The bed was a mess—but no one else was there.
Yi Huai sighed, walked to the window, opened it, and lit a cigarette. “You’ve really crossed a line. What are you even doing? Didn’t I tell you not to hide anything from me?”
“You did…” Xu Ling glanced at the bathroom. The light was off. She really hid in there.
“So tell me, what happened the other night? Why weren’t you in your room?”
“I went out to run the stairs. Left my phone behind.”
Yi Huai was stunned, then took a long drag. “Running stairs? That’s a new one. Who were you with?”
Xu Ling thought this is it, I’m done. She really couldn’t say it.
Seeing her silent, Yi Huai started listing off male actors from the crew, one by one, watching her reactions.
None of them?
Yi Huai knew Xu Ling wasn’t that good of an actress—especially when she felt guilty. But her expression didn’t change with any of the names.
She considered—could it be… a female actor?
Not impossible. But the actresses on set were all straight—and had boyfriends.
As for Qin Cong’an? No way. She wasn’t the type to sleep with her co-stars.
Yi Huai exhaled a smoke ring, continuing, “If you won’t say, fine. But you and that person better keep it hidden. Not just from me, but from everyone else. Don’t think just because ‘set couples’ are common, you can mess around. I don’t want you becoming one of those stories.”
Xu Ling nodded. So she and Qin Cong’an were now… a set couple?
As for keeping it a secret—should be doable, right?
“You think I want to micromanage you? But you made the whole crew wait. You think that’s acceptable?”
“I’m really sorry. I know I was wrong.”
Since she seemed sincere, and she hadn’t caused any issues since then, Yi Huai decided to let it slide for now.
After seeing Yi Huai out, Xu Ling let out a long breath at the door.
But just remembering Qin Cong’an was still in her bathroom, her nerves spiked again.
Xu Ling tiptoed back in. The bathroom light was on—and the sound of running water.
…Was she showering?
Seriously? All this for “artistic devotion”? Did she act like this on other sets too?
Qin Cong’an had filmed for years and done intimate scenes before. But it was said she’d negotiate with directors to cut unnecessary ones—only keeping what was essential to plot and character.
Her debut had been a major breakout, giving her a lot of say in future roles.
But what she was like in private—no one could say.
Like Yi Huai said, “set couples” were everywhere in this industry. Even back before Xu Ling entered the field, she’d heard about them.
The water kept running—and then the door opened.
Qin Cong’an poked her head out:
“Wanna shower together?”
