- Chapter 5 - A Bit Too Reckless
“Ding.”
The elevator doors opened, and the two women stepped out one after the other. Ning Nai slowed her pace, curious whether Lu Jin’an actually lived here as she claimed.
To her surprise, Lu Jin’an confidently walked up to the unit opposite 905 and said with a smile, “Director Ning, I’m in 906. Let’s look out for each other from now on~”
Ning Nai: “…”
Her mood instantly took a hit. 906?
Under her watchful gaze, Lu Jin’an smoothly entered the passcode, and the door swung open. Before stepping inside, Lu Jin’an even glanced over to see where Ning Nai lived—only to find her standing right across the hall at 905.
“No way, this can’t be a coincidence, right? Director Ning?” Lu Jin’an’s smile was picture-perfect, flawless.
Suppressing her shock, Ning Nai forced a smile. “That’s right. I live right across from you.”
Then, in a flurry of movement—
She swiftly pressed her fingerprint, pushed the door open, and slammed it shut behind her, tossing out a single word:
“Goodbye.”
Leaving Lu Jin’an standing alone in stunned silence.
A wave of defeat washed over her. After that exchange, she was even more convinced—Director Ning genuinely disliked her.
And not just any dislike—it felt like an unreasonable, innate aversion.
Being arbitrarily hated by a client?
Lu Jin’an’s excitement about moving in instantly evaporated.
Once inside, she stood frozen for a long moment, staring at the mountains of unpacked boxes around her. This was nothing like the tidy photos her cousin had sent her.
This was straight-up false advertising.
That little brat was really pushing his luck.
Seething with frustration but with no outlet, her phone suddenly rang. The screen displayed two bold characters: “Wanderer.”
She answered to the sound of a cheerful young man’s laughter. “Sis, you moving in today? I’ll come help!”
Lu Jin’an replied with thinly veiled irritation, “Glad you still have a conscience. Bring food when you come.”
When Fang Lang arrived, he was carrying two large plastic bags stuffed with all kinds of snacks, drinks, and fruit.
This cousin had been pampered his whole life—since when did the young master know how to take care of others?
Fang Lang said, “Let’s order pizza for lunch. Oh, and I brought wine.”
For a moment, Lu Jin’an felt touched.
Back in the day, she’d always been the one looking after him. Now the little rascal had grown up.
Her expression softened slightly as she looked at Fang Lang.
Holding up the wine bottle, Fang Lang asked, “Sis, you don’t have a corkscrew, do you?”
Moving was chaotic enough, and this was a new place—of course not everything was ready.
Before she could answer, Fang Lang added, “Figured you wouldn’t. I’ll just borrow one from across the hall.”
The memory of Ning Nai’s icy “Goodbye” sent a chill down Lu Jin’an’s spine. She quickly snapped,
“Wait!”
Grabbing his arm, she scolded, “Do you even know who lives there? You can’t just go knocking on doors!”
Unexpectedly, Fang Lang grinned mischievously. “It’s a pretty girl. Of course I can.”
The implications of that statement hit Lu Jin’an instantly.
“Hold on—how do you know it’s a girl?”
Fang Lang shrugged. “Oh, when I was checking the furniture deliveries for you, I saw her. Gorgeous, great figure—seemed super nice too. Don’t worry, she’ll lend it to me.”
Lu Jin’an tightened her grip on his arm. “Stop right there. You’re not going.”
Fang Lang frowned. “Why not?”
Now Lu Jin’an finally caught on—this little brother of hers wasn’t here to visit her at all. Buying all that food and drinks? Clearly, “Xiang Zhuang performs the sword dance, but his mind is on the Duke of Pei.”
He was here for Ning Nai across the hall.
Lu Jin’an still remembered how stingy her brother used to be. Whenever they hung out, he’d never reach for his wallet.
Narrowing her eyes like a fox, Lu Jin’an smirked, “Hmph, something’s off with you.”
Under her knowing gaze, Fang Lang finally cracked and laughed. “Alright, sis, you got me. You saw right through it.”
“I wanna chase that girl across the hall.”
Lu Jin’an wished she could gag him with a dishcloth. “Do you even hear yourself? How old are you, kid?”
Though Ning Nai looked young, Lu Jin’an knew she was the same age as herself—twenty-eight. Fang Lang, still a college student, was barely twenty. How dare he even think about it?
Fang Lang, fearless as a newborn calf, shrugged. “I’m an adult. Besides, dating’s got nothing to do with age, right?”
Listen to him—”dating.”
True to his name, Fang Lang was a real playboy. Yet, blessed by the heavens, he stood at 186 cm with striking looks. If you lined up all the girls he’d dated, they’d circle the entire neighborhood.
But those were just ordinary girls.
That CEO Ning? She was an untouchable iceberg, radiating “stay away” vibes. Given the current sensitive situation, if Fang Lang actually knocked on door 905…
Lu Jin’an couldn’t even imagine the scene—Fang Lang harassing Ning Nai, only to get thrown out.
And she had no idea how Ning Nai would view her afterward.
Seduction?
Fang Lang’s overly eager, coltish expression made Lu Jin’an want to look away.
In the end, Fang Lang couldn’t sway his sister. Lu Jin’an put her foot down:
“Chase whoever you want, but that one across the hall is my important client. Keep it in check.”
“Go play elsewhere.”
Soon, Haicheng slipped into August.
The scorching summer heat baked the city.
After days of vetting business partners, Ning Nai finally didn’t have to work overtime. For once, she could leave on time.
She picked up some fruit at the grocery store and headed home early.
Stepping out of the elevator, she hadn’t walked far when she sensed something amiss. Her steps slowed to a stop.
A few meters away, near the entrance of unit 905—or rather, 906—stood a tall stranger. He wasn’t trying to enter or leave; he just loitered there, as if waiting.
In the peak of summer, he wore only a loose T-shirt and casual shorts.
His hairy calves made Ning Nai’s skin crawl.
Just as she debated calling the building manager, the man noticed her. With a polite smile, he flashed a set of white teeth.
“Hey there! I’m from 906. My sister locked me out,” Fang Lang said, stepping aside to give her space to pass.
Judging by his youthful looks, he was definitely a college student.
Hearing him name his unit, Ning Nai relaxed slightly.
Fang Lang added, “Mind helping me out? My sister probably missed my calls.”
He lifted the two large bags in his hands, looking both amused and helpless. “She changed the passcode and forgot to tell me…”
So this was Lu Jin’an’s brother?
Aside from the similar height, they didn’t look alike at all.
Out of concern for safety, Ning Nai had to ask, “May I ask, who is your sister?”
“Lu Jin’an, my cousin. I’m Fang Lang.” Fang Lang grinned broadly, looking every bit the harmless, sunny boy.
Ning Nai studied Fang Lang’s features and expression—unsurprisingly, everyone in Lu Jin’an’s family seemed to be blessed with good looks.
“Oh, then let me try calling her again for you,” Ning Nai said, pulling out her phone and scrolling through her contacts for the business card she had saved earlier. She pulled up Lu Jin’an’s number.
She had never imagined that one day she would be the one dialing this number—
and under such circumstances, no less.
