After Going on a Blind Date With My Omega Love Rival (ABO, GL) - Chapter 17
Chapter 17
Yu Heyi couldn’t figure out why Chi Ruixi’s expression that night seemed so sad, no matter how she looked at it.
It troubled her deeply.
She kept feeling like she’d been a jerk to Chi Ruixi.
Since that day, whenever she ran into Chi Ruixi at school, Chi Ruixi’s demeanor seemed colder, even more distant than before.
It was as if this was the outcome Yu Heyi had wanted, but seeing Chi Ruixi smile warmly at others while being icy toward her made her feel stifled.
Unhappy.
Yes, that’s it—unhappy.
“Little Yu, we might need to work overtime tomorrow. Is that okay?” It was Friday, and tomorrow was supposed to be part of the weekend, but because the school was holding a parent-teacher meeting in the morning, and parents might want to check on the meals, they needed to work an extra day.
Yu Heyi nodded, indicating it was fine.
Before she started working here, she’d already considered that weekends might not always be free. When she was in school, especially in her senior year, and even starting from her junior year, weekends often meant classes.
But after educational reforms, kids these days had it much easier than her generation. Though she hadn’t attended many classes in her senior year, she clearly remembered how hard everyone around her studied.
Especially Chi Ruixi. Back then, she was a total bookworm. While others played, Chi Ruixi studied. Even during class, Chi Ruixi was studying.
Yu Heyi thought it might be because Chi Ruixi’s family was poor, so she had to work hard to get ahead.
Xijing High School was somewhat of a semi-elite institution. Half the students came from wealthy or influential families, but the school’s humanized approach showed in its support for less fortunate students. Not only were tuition and fees waived for those from poor families, but they also received living expense subsidies. So, it wasn’t entirely an elite school.
In fact, about half the students came from poor or ordinary families. Jingwan’s family was quite average, and Yu Heyi suspected Chi Ruixi’s might be even less well-off.
Yu Heyi’s family wasn’t exactly rich either. Most of the Yu family were in politics, and Lady Du’s family wasn’t particularly wealthy either. However, the founder of Xijing High School was Lady Du’s father, Yu Heyi’s grandfather. Yu Heyi had heard countless stories about how her grandfather, an Alpha from a poor family, went from being a teacher to founding Xijing High School step by step.
It was… not easy.
Even now, her retired grandfather served as the honorary principal of Xijing High School.
Her uncle was the vice-principal, though he’d been away on a business trip to another city recently. Yu Heyi had been working here for a week and hadn’t seen him.
But her uncle probably knew about her, and likely about the fight she’d gotten into a few days ago.
Because since that incident, no one had approached her about it. Her colleagues in the cafeteria didn’t show any unusual behavior either, as if they were completely unaware.
“Wanna grab dinner after work?”
The person speaking was a young female Alpha who made pastries. Work was done for the day, and she gave Yu Heyi a goofy grin as she extended the invitation.
After a week, Yu Heyi had learned a bit about this female Alpha. Her name was Li Li, a few years older than Yu Heyi, in her thirties, from an ordinary family, with a wife and daughter.
“Don’t you need to go home and eat with your wife?”
Li Li wasn’t just goofy-looking; she was genuinely warm. She kept smiling and said, “Nah, it’s the weekend tomorrow. She’s out with other parents and kids today.”
Yu Heyi was pretty sociable, but she hadn’t found anyone in the cafeteria she really clicked with. The Alpha in front of her was, at best, someone she could get along with.
They were close in age, but since Li Li was married with a kid, Yu Heyi hadn’t felt comfortable inviting her out. Li Li’s invitation was just what she’d hoped for.
“Alright, let’s go.”
Seeing Yu Heyi agree, Li Li gave a hearty laugh and patted her shoulder.
Even without saying it, Li Li could tell Yu Heyi’s family was well-off, at least not as ordinary as hers. Though Yu Heyi dressed simply every day—white T-shirts or white button-ups—her aura was different. You could just tell.
So, at first, Li Li had only greeted Yu Heyi politely. After a few days of working together, she decided to take the initiative to get closer.
But when they reached the parking lot and saw the black Audi R8, even though Li Li had prepared herself, she was still shocked.
It’s not like Li Li hadn’t seen an Audi before, and she’d figured Yu Heyi’s family was either rich or influential.
But… seeing a car she loved made her freeze in place, didn’t it?
“What’s up? Get in.”
Yu Heyi dreaded this exact reaction from Li Li. She’d already chosen her most low-key car, but… the envy in Li Li’s expression was too obvious.
She wondered if she should switch cars tomorrow.
It wasn’t intentional. She couldn’t help it—this was the least flashy car in her garage.
It wasn’t like Yu Heyi was loaded. In fact, she was pretty broke.
Because of her love for cars, most of the money she’d earned over the years went into them. Looking at her cars, you’d think she was a tycoon, but she was so poor she only had her cars.
She didn’t have many—just three or four. Two she’d bought by pinching pennies, and the one in front of them was a gift from her grandma.
Even the house she lived in now was a graduation gift from Old Yu.
Most of the money she’d earned over the years went into buying and modifying cars.
Right now, she probably had less cash than Li Li.
“…Wanna drive?” Yu Heyi could see the envy and excitement in Li Li’s eyes. She wasn’t stingy—if Li Li liked it, she could give it a spin.
But as soon as she said it, Li Li waved her hands vigorously. “No, no way.”
A car that expensive? She didn’t dare drive it.
“It’s fine. If you like it, give it a try.”
Though she and Li Li weren’t exactly close friends, letting her drive wasn’t a big deal.
As she spoke, Yu Heyi nudged Li Li toward the driver’s seat. Li Li, flustered by her enthusiasm, started sweating, clearly overwhelmed.
While they were pushing and joking, Yu Heyi caught sight of Chi Ruixi walking with a student.
The student looked like an Alpha and seemed quite close with Chi Ruixi.
The Alpha was much taller than Chi Ruixi but was clinging to her hand in a dependent way. The two were chatting and laughing.
At least, that’s how it looked to Yu Heyi. Though Chi Ruixi’s smile wasn’t very obvious, the Alpha beside her was clearly trying hard to please her.
As they got closer, Yu Heyi stopped pushing Li Li. When their eyes met, Yu Heyi felt a mix of nervousness and anger.
After school, Chi Ruixi had been cornered by her niece, Chi Ying.
The lively little Alpha grabbed her arm, sweetly calling, “Auntie.”
Chi Ruixi responded in a slightly stiff tone, “Call me Teacher.”
It wasn’t that Chi Ruixi was cold to her, but at school, she always maintained this distant, cool demeanor with Chi Ying, far from the doting aunt she’d been when Chi Ying was little.
So, Chi Ying played along at school, acting like a cool, reserved kid.
But now, in the office with just the two of them, her cool facade dropped. She pouted at the stern Teacher Chi, whining, “Auntie, Mom’s coming back tonight. Come home with me, please.”
Chi Ruixi glanced at her, her expression saying she’d expected this.
Their bond was indeed strong. When Chi Ying was little, Chi Ruixi had practically raised her. But that was back then. Now that her niece was older with her own ideas, she didn’t cling to her like before.
Unless Chi Ruixi’s sister, Chi Ying’s mother, Chi Shengxi, showed up.
Then Chi Ying would revert to her childhood self, seeking her aunt’s protection.
Chi Shengxi, a prominent Alpha from an influential family, was the current head of the Chi family.
A rigid, old-fashioned female Alpha, nearing forty but with the feudal mindset of a sixty-year-old man.
Old-fashioned, not in appearance—Chi Shengxi had a strikingly handsome face—but in behavior and, especially, in thought.
Even Chi Ruixi dreaded facing her sister, so she wasn’t inclined to help her niece’s plea.
“Chi Ying, you’re not a kid anymore, and you’ve differentiated into an Alpha. You don’t need to be scared of your mom like before.”
Yes, Chi Shengxi was an Alpha who valued Alphas over Omegas.
She’d never paid much attention to Chi Ying, who tested as a Beta as a child and wasn’t seen as promising.
Thinking of this, Chi Ruixi found it almost laughable. Back then, she’d tested as a Beta and later differentiated into an Omega. Her niece had followed the same path but had now differentiated into an Alpha.
So, her dear sister had suddenly started paying attention to her daughter. Chi Shengxi, often away on business, had made a special trip back for tomorrow’s parent-teacher meeting and had even returned early today.
Unable to resist Chi Ying’s persistent begging, Chi Ruixi agreed to go home with her.
Along the way, Chi Ying showered her with compliments, calling her the kindest, most beautiful Omega and the caring Teacher Chi who loved her students.
Chi Ruixi could barely handle her slick-talking niece and reluctantly agreed.
But running into Yu Heyi was something she hadn’t anticipated. Yu Heyi’s shift ended a bit earlier than hers.
