After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Car Accident
“It’s all because of you! Xiao Shu went and got drunk all by herself, and then she got into a car accident on the way home!”
When Bei Ge rushed to the hospital, she was still wearing an embroidered gown she hadn’t had time to change out of, looking as if she was ready for a banquet.
But her exquisite makeup was at odds with her look of panic. A few strands of hair had come loose from her neatly pinned up hairstyle, and her matching shawl was a mess. Bei Ge seemed like a string pulled taut to its breaking point, humming with a trembling tension.
Wei Shu’s family blocked her from entering the room.
“What are you looking at? Get out of here now! Don’t be an eyesore.”
The speaker was Wei Shu’s third aunt, who had always looked down on Bei Ge. After learning that Wei Shu had accepted her proposal, she had called and berated her for more than ten minutes.
Bei Ge didn’t argue with them. Taking advantage of a moment of inattention, her tall figure maneuvered around one of them and slipped into the room as quickly as a fish.
“Xiao Shu…”
The room smelled sterile and clean, and the person on the bed was awake. But upon seeing her, Bei Ge still couldn’t control herself. She fell silent, her expression incredibly complex.
The person she had carefully cherished was now as wilted as a leftover flower that couldn’t be sold.
After only one night apart, Wei Shu’s face looked sickly. Her slender left arm was bandaged with a splint twice its normal size, and her apricot eyes had lost their spark. She looked like a long-stemmed flower wilting from lack of water, drooping until Bei Ge burst in, at which point she gently raised her eyes to look at her.
That gaze made Bei Ge’s heart tremble.
“How dare you barge in here! Get out!”
In a flash, the others from outside rushed into the room and tried to push Bei Ge away.
Bei Ge’s eyes were still on Wei Shu’s face. All of her strength seemed to have been drained the moment she saw Wei Shu.
Heaven knows what was going through her mind when she got the call about Wei Shu’s car accident. The sky falling would not have been an overstatement. Even after learning on the way that Wei Shu was not seriously hurt, the chaos in her heart did not subside in the slightest. Only after seeing Wei Shu sitting up in bed, seemingly okay, did she finally release the breath she had been holding, but immediately, a deeper exhaustion washed over her.
So when she was pushed, her mind was elsewhere, and her footing was unsteady. She nearly fell to the ground.
“Third Aunt!” Bei Ge grabbed Third Aunt’s arm, stopping her movements. A clear crease formed between her light eyebrows, and a deep displeasure was suppressed in her eyes. She said angrily, “Don’t cause a scene in the hospital room.”
After all, Bei Ge’s status was now different. When she genuinely asserted herself, they became nervous. They all fell silent, looked at each other, and no one dared to say another word.
Bei Ge let go of her arm, then wearily pinched the bridge of her nose with her other hand. After a dozen seconds, she mustered up her energy and sighed. “Third Aunt, what exactly happened?”
Third Aunt’s face was sour from being yelled at. Upon hearing Bei Ge address her, her expression softened a bit. She let out a cold huff. “The road was slick, and she hit a guardrail. Her arm was caught between the deformed car door and the steering wheel, and it broke.”
It was exactly the same as what was said on the phone.
It was just a temporary pinch, not a serious injury.
Bei Ge let out a long sigh of relief, intending to ask them all to leave so she could have some time alone with Wei Shu. She had a few questions for her, too.
But at that moment, Wei Shu, who had been watching them with wide eyes, spoke softly.
“Who are you all?”
Her voice was clear, with a hint of confusion and caution.
Instantly, everyone turned to look at her.
She had asked, “Who are you all,” but Wei Shu’s gaze mostly lingered on Bei Ge. When Bei Ge looked at her, she immediately shifted her gaze away.
She had just woken up. Her left arm was in excruciating pain. She had no idea where she was, and before she could fully come to her senses, a group of strangers had burst into her room, making a racket.
The woman in the front looked gentle and had an outstanding appearance. However, the way she was looking at her was a bit strange, as if she knew her, but Wei Shu had absolutely no recollection of her.
And after hearing her speak, the woman’s elegant demeanor instantly shattered, as if she had been punched hard. Her face visibly turned pale.
Wei Shu frowned. Her tone was weak but icy. “Why are you in my room?”
Bei Ge stared into Wei Shu’s eyes for three seconds, catching a completely unfamiliar and even wary look. The panic that had just receded rushed back like a tidal wave, and she quickly pressed the nurse call button.
What followed was a flurry of chaotic check-ups, transfers, more check-ups, and consultations.
“Xiao Shu, don’t be scared. I’m your Third Aunt, and I’ll take good care of you.” Third Aunt, Chen Xiaoqian, had a curly perm. Her makeup had been streaked by her tears, leaving two dark smudges under her eyes. She held Wei Shu’s hand and talked nonstop.
Wei Shu had just finished all her examinations and was very tired. She let her cry without any reaction.
Chen Xiaoqian cried to herself for a while, overcome with sorrow, and began to attack people indiscriminately.
“That damn person, who didn’t walk on the nice sidewalk, and instead ran onto the road, making you slip! I think they should have been the one who got hit!”
Wei Shu pulled her hand back, staring at the ceiling expressionlessly.
“And that heartless woman, Bei Ge! She only cares about her own company and doesn’t care about you at all…”
At the mention of “Bei Ge,” Wei Shu slightly tilted her head.
Chen Xiaoqian got angry whenever she thought of Bei Ge and said indignantly, “A nobody who got lucky and started a company and made some money, now she dares to lust after our Xiao Shu? She should take a look at herself and see if she’s worthy from head to toe!”
“Wait, hold on a second,” Wei Shu interrupted, looking confused. “The ‘Bei Ge’ you’re talking about, is she the person who took me for my check-up just now?”
Chen Xiaoqian let out an “Ah” and said disdainfully, “She should be the one to take care of you. If it weren’t for her proposing to you and pushing you too hard, how could you have gotten into a car accident?”
Wei Shu woke up feeling that this world was a bit strange.
Bei Ge, if she hadn’t heard wrong, was a Master of Business Administration from Jincheng University and the boss of the city’s largest company, Kuangye Company.
And she herself was just a designer who ran a small studio.
In terms of looks, education, or financial resources, how could Bei Ge be “unworthy from head to toe” as Chen Xiaoqian had claimed?
And proposals were a matter of mutual consent. She was an adult. If Bei Ge hadn’t forced her, what did the car accident have to do with the proposal?
Chen Xiaoqian started a new round of insults, saying that Bei Ge’s background was too poor and that her intentions were not pure. When she got emotional, she started to cry again.
Amidst the annoying crying, Wei Shu got a headache and fell into a daze.
…
“She suffered a compression to the head, and a lump formed later. But because there was no impact, there were no signs of a concussion at first. The lump is slowly growing. It has reached the standard for surgery, but we still don’t recommend it. We can observe it for a period of time, and the lump should slowly be absorbed and disappear.”
Bei Ge sat in the office of the head of the neurology department at the city hospital, frowning at the medical records on the table. When she heard the words “slowly growing,” her frown deepened.
Her long hair was all tied back. Days of running around and high levels of stress had caused a network of red veins to appear in her eyes. Her heavy eyelids had deep creases, and the exhaustion in her eyes was something she was trying hard to suppress. When she opened her eyes again, she couldn’t hide her confusion.
“What’s wrong with her amnesia? Why did she forget me?”
Most cases of amnesia aren’t like what’s shown in novels, where people forget everything at the drop of a hat. Some people selectively forget certain memories due to stress, while others have gaps in their memory from a specific period of time. Forgetting everyone completely is not common.
The doctor opposite her knew her well and knew she was worried about Wei Shu. He looked a bit helpless but continued to explain. “It’s only temporary amnesia. It’ll be fine once the lump is absorbed.”
“That’s not it.” Bei Ge irritably pulled back the medical records, sat up straight, and looked out the window. Her body was in a state of both resistance and anxiety. After half a minute, she turned back and continued to speak. Her words were slow, and her tone was soft, sounding hesitant yet also certain.
“I’ve heard that many people forget things they don’t want to remember, including things they are trying to escape from, or people they are trying to escape from.”
The doctor was a bit surprised and raised an eyebrow. “You think Wei Shu forgot you because she didn’t want to remember you?”
Bei Ge looked down at the silver ring on her left ring finger. It was the ring Wei Shu had put on her when she proposed a few days ago. The style was simple and elegant, fitting the woman’s usual taste.
So, was Wei Shu willing to marry her or not…?
She had liked Wei Shu since she was a child. At that time, Wei Shu was the neighbor of her employers. She had a princess haircut and a puffy dress, standing outside the iron gate that Bei Ge could easily slip in and out of. She was clutching an expensive flower she had picked from the garden. The flower petals had released their juices, staining her hands and the hem of her dress.
Her dress was dirty, and the petals were stuck to her hands. She couldn’t get them clean, and the more she patted her dress, the dirtier it got. Her little apricot eyes filled with tears, and her nose started to sweat from anxiety.
Bei Ge, wearing a gardener’s uniform and holding a watering can, stood on the other side of the wide, bright road, watching her.
At the time, she thought the child was so dumb. Why didn’t she just throw the flower away? So, she walked over, snatched the flower from her hand, threw it on the ground, and said, “Don’t cry. I’ll throw it away for you.”
Just then, Wei Shu’s nanny ran out and happened to see the scene.
Bei Ge always remembered the nanny’s disgusted look as she ran over. After seeing the flower on the ground, that look changed from disgust to caution.
“Baby, did she bully you?” the nanny asked Wei Shu. “She snatched your flower and made you cry.”
Bei Ge had a strong sense of self-respect since she was a child. At that moment, her face turned red with anger, but as a small child, she didn’t dare to confront an adult. She could only glare at Wei Shu in a huff.
Wei Shu’s big eyes were still teary. After being stared at so fiercely, a tear on her eyelash was literally scared off.
“I’m done for,” Bei Ge thought. This nanny, who was repaying kindness with enmity, was probably going to complain to her employers. The employers would say a few indifferent words to her mother, and her mother would hit her in front of everyone, then cry with her at night.
How annoying.
At that moment, Wei Shu recovered from her shock, patted her little hands together, and said in a sweet, childish voice that was both clear and serious, “She didn’t make me cry. I did it myself.”
Since Wei Shu said so, the nanny could only glare at Bei Ge and advise Wei Shu, “Don’t run out by yourself anymore. There are a lot of bad people outside. And look how dirty she is. You should stay far away from her.”
Bei Ge pursed her lips and looked down at her gardener’s uniform. She had just finished watering the flowers by the door for her mother, and she had accidentally gotten some mud on her sleeve. She hadn’t noticed it before, and even if she had, she wouldn’t have cared.
Since the misunderstanding was cleared up, Bei Ge gave the nanny a cold look and turned to leave.
From behind, she heard the small girl’s faint voice, and a cool little hand grabbed her wrist. “Thank you.”
The tense corners of Bei Ge’s lips relaxed a bit. She looked down at her colorful wrist and couldn’t help but smile a little.
Then she left without looking back.
The clouds in the sky, the mud on the ground. Bei Ge getting Wei Shu to marry her was more complicated and difficult than the “eighty-one hardships” of the Journey to the West.
Bei Ge looked at the fruits of her hard work in the first half of her life and thought to herself, it’s not impossible that Wei Shu’s amnesia was because she didn’t want to remember her and wanted to call off the engagement.
Otherwise, why would she have driven to see her ex the night before they were to get their marriage license?
She knew that even after the alcohol was out of her system, she would have a headache for several days after drinking. So why did she drink when she went to see her ex?
Bei Ge’s emotions were a bit out of control. For all these years, she had barely let Wei Shu touch a drop of alcohol and had carefully protected her in any situation that required drinking. And her ex clearly knew that she couldn’t drink, so why didn’t they stop her?
What was even more unbearable was that when the car accident happened, Wei Shu’s last call was to her ex.
The doctor saw her fall silent, and her expression became serious. “Why would you think that? Didn’t you just successfully propose a few days ago?”
Bei Ge didn’t want to discuss the “green hat” on her head. She picked up the medical records and stood up. “I’ll bring Wei Shu back for a follow-up check-up in a week. Contact me if anything happens.”
The doctor was left speechless. Before she could yell “You’re crazy!”, Bei Ge, who had just reached the door, came back and ordered, “What I said to you today, don’t tell Wei Shu.”
The doctor narrowed her eyes and said deliberately, “Why should I?”
Bei Ge let out a soft laugh, with a strange fire burning in her eyes. “If I can’t win Wei Shu back, I’m not going to have a good time, and you’re definitely going to have an even worse time.”
Remembering Bei Ge’s obsession with Wei Shu over the years, which all their friends had seen, the doctor knew that Bei Ge was not joking. The doctor choked, let out a long sigh, and promised that she wouldn’t say anything, that she didn’t know anything in the first place. Only then did Bei Ge feel reassured enough to leave.
