After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 10
Chapter 10: Differences
A Moment of Clarity
After a series of failed attempts to show affection, Weishu stayed put for a while, feeling frustrated and annoyed, before heading upstairs alone. She genuinely couldn’t understand what was happening. She had seen with her own eyes how much Beige liked her, how she took care of her, and how good she was to her. So why was it so impossible for her to return the favor and get a little closer? Was she a monster?
The only place she could find answers was with Yu Qing. The “Pet-loving Daji” profile was currently on a voice call with Weishu, listening to her complain.
“That’s normal,” Yu Qing said. “From Beige’s perspective, you’ve always been cold and distant. Not to mention, she’s always felt guilty for not taking good care of you. She’s definitely not used to you being so affectionate.”
Weishu hadn’t planned on getting to the bottom of what her “previous self” had done, but hearing that, she frowned. It seems I have no choice but to ask, she thought. But she still couldn’t get a clear answer.
“I really don’t know,” Yu Qing said. “You went abroad after high school. We didn’t see each other for years, and you never told me what happened in between.”
Weishu questioned Yu Qing’s status as her best friend. “That’s it? And you still have the nerve to call yourself my best friend?”
Yu Qing’s voice suddenly rose. “Heaven help me, you were the one who was so emotionally distant! Why don’t you talk about how much you shut Beige out?”
Weishu felt a strange sense of guilt. She coughed a few times, held the phone lower, and whispered, “So, how did you know about Beige and me?”
Yu Qing wanted to say that anyone with eyes could see it, but a memory surfaced in her mind. “I can tell you about that.”
Weishu indicated she was all ears.
“That summer, Beige went abroad to find you. She got drunk the night before she left. I think I know why. For the entire summer, you treated her like she was invisible. You never even looked at her. I thought you two had a big fight and broke up, but you shook your head and said no. I asked if you wanted her to leave, and you said no. But you just wouldn’t talk to her.”
Weishu’s eyebrows shot up. Someone traveled all that way to see you, and you didn’t even look at them for a whole summer? If silent treatment were a crime, that would be a twenty-year sentence without parole.
Yu Qing continued her recollection. “That day, she was so drunk, it was painful to watch. She’s such a beautiful, polite, educated, and elegant person, but you broke her heart so badly she couldn’t even stand. Her eyes were filled with sadness.”
As Yu Qing spoke, a mental image of Beige’s face appeared in Weishu’s mind. Her striking features and refined demeanor should have been a perfect balance of grace and composure, but when she looked at herself, no matter how calm she appeared on the surface, she seemed to be hiding a flawed mirror inside that was fragile and could shatter at the slightest touch.
“Tsk.” Weishu lowered her head for a moment, letting the wave of heartache subside.
After her long-winded story, Yu Qing asked with curiosity, “Tell me, why are you asking all this?”
Weishu explained her desire to start over with Beige.
“And Beige agreed?” Yu Qing’s tone was full of disbelief.
Weishu recalled Beige’s attitude from the night before and hesitated. “She said, ‘As you wish.'”
Yu Qing, who was generally carefree, sensed something but couldn’t quite put her finger on it. “Beige probably just went along with it. She’s never stopped you from doing anything you wanted.”
Weishu thought, She went along with it? Yes, that was true. Last night, she impulsively went to see Beige, who ate with her when asked, went home with her when asked, and gave her a hug when asked. Wasn’t that being completely compliant? But this morning, when she tried to be a little nice and made her breakfast, Beige seemed touched but ultimately pushed her away.
She couldn’t figure it out.
Finally, Yu Qing said bluntly, “Why don’t you show some weakness? Beige is used to taking care of you, so she’s sure to respond.”
“How much more can I show weakness… Faint into her arms?” Weishu felt like Yu Qing was giving her terrible advice.
Yu Qing enthusiastically said, “That’s not a bad idea.”
Weishu rolled her eyes. “I’m hanging up. I’m going to sleep.”
Weishu lay flat on her bed, savoring the taste of defeat. Then, she quickly forgave Beige in her heart. This was nothing. She had just begun her pursuit. A thick skin was a necessity.
A scratching sound came from outside the door, as if something was clawing at it. For some reason, Weishu’s first thought was of a large, poisonous spider. Before she could recover from scaring herself, a “meow” sounded from outside. Weishu opened the door with a blank expression. Ding-Dong the cat had both paws on the door, and as it opened, she stretched luxuriously. “Aww.” Ding-Dong curled her tail and rubbed against Weishu’s leg, doing a full 360-degree rub.
Weishu stared at the cat for three seconds, her face expressionless, and then suddenly crouched down, petting it furiously from head to tail. Ding-Dong purred contentedly, her eyes half-closed, spreading out her belly for Weishu to pet.
“You tell me, what’s her deal?” Weishu muttered to the cat.
The little cat didn’t understand. The little cat just knew how to be cute. Weishu picked up her phone and snapped a picture of Ding-Dong’s adorable and seductive pose, planning to add text and make it into an emoticon to use with Beige later. From what she had observed, Beige spoiled this cat. She kept it sleek and shiny like a little child. Seeing an emoticon of it would surely put her in a good mood.
Just then, a new email notification popped up, followed by a phone call.
-Shu Se Assistant Sun Tu
“Director, everyone’s monthly report has been compiled and sent to your email,” Sun Tu said as soon as she picked up.
It had been less than a week since Weishu’s car accident. Beige had requested leave for her, and no one had cared whether the director came to work on time until Weishu had spoken in the group chat. Weishu simply hummed to acknowledge the message.
“Director,” Sun Tu said, her tone hesitant. “There’s one more thing I need to report.”
Weishu said, “What is it?”
Sun Tu paused, apparently flipping through some documents. The sound of rustling paper came through the phone. “The studio has taken on thirteen recent design projects. Two of them are uncompleted and overdue. You said that any overdue design must be reported to you.”
Weishu, of course, knew the importance of unfinished, overdue projects. She ran a studio that took on design work for clients. Not completing a project was not only a breach of contract, but it also meant losing valuable credibility. Weishu’s voice became grave. “What designs are they, who’s in charge, and I want to know the reason for them being overdue right now.”
A five-second silence fell on Sun Tu’s end. “The reason for them being overdue is that you, Director, have not submitted the design drafts.”
Weishu: “…”
Sun Tu continued calmly, “However, the client has said that they can extend the deadline by half a month. There are eleven days left until the new deadline.”
Weishu’s face burned with embarrassment and anger. She lowered her voice. “You’re my assistant, right? How could you tell me about something this important only now?”
Sun Tu sounded confused. “Didn’t you say you were on vacation and wouldn’t be taking any work calls?”
Beige had requested the leave for her. Even so, Weishu couldn’t allow the studio to have overdue projects. Weishu’s tone was serious, and she was in a very bad mood. “In the past, when my designs were late, who would they be handed over to? Don’t we have a second-in-command? You just watched them expire?”
Was she the boss or were they? The director of a company’s designs were left to go overdue without anyone reminding her or helping her out? What were they even for? Weishu’s anger surged, and her face turned pale.
Sun Tu was startled and stammered, “These two… these two designs are for Kuangye Company. Qin-jie, the second-in-command, said there was no need to worry about the Kuangye Company designs, since nothing would go wrong anyway…”
Weishu was instantly stunned. Huh? Kuangye Company? Beige’s company?
Sun Tu gritted her teeth, and in a bid to avoid being scolded, she continued to spill secrets. “You’ve never let anyone else get involved with the designs for Kuangye Company. Someone tried to take them on before, and you ‘reminded’ them by name…”
Weishu: Aha!
Weishu looked at the sky and the ground, unable to suppress a smile despite her tense face. “Ahem, so that’s it. I see. It’s nothing. You can go back to work. I’ll follow up on the designs myself.”
After she hung up, Weishu’s face was still burning. Well done, little Weishu, you’re a closeted flirt. You hid that well.
- The designs for Kuangye Company.
- You never let anyone else get involved.
- No need to worry, nothing will go wrong anyway.
Sun Tu quickly sent the files over. The corners of Weishu’s mouth kept turning up. She quickly took a photo and sent it to Beige with the caption: Sobbing, so much work. She also attached the “I love you today too.gif” emoticon.
