After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 14
Chapter 14: I Don’t Care
The Messages
When Weishu learned that she, too, had a favorite, she was so excited she could have set off fireworks. She had been in a morally awkward position for so long! Now she felt vindicated and could finally hold her head high.
SHU: Gotta go, Beige told me to go to bed early.
Pet-loving Daji: …Stop showing off.
Pet-loving Daji: Oh, by the way, I have something to tell you.
SHU: Go on.
Pet-loving Daji: I’m coming back to the country in a few days. I’ll come hang out with you then.
Weishu stared at the message without replying immediately. Honestly, she only had a vague impression of Yu Qing. It was nothing like the inexplicable affection and closeness she felt for Beige, but she did feel a sense of familiarity.
Chatting online was fun, but meeting in person, Weishu felt a bit lost.
Pet-loving Daji: Your house hasn’t changed, has it? Still Beige’s apartment by the river?
After much thought, Weishu replied with a simple “Yep.” Yu Qing sent a “Love you, kissy face” emoticon and didn’t say anything more.
Apparently, Yu Qing was a pet groomer, or as Beige put it, something similar to a zookeeper or animal trainer—she worked with animals. It was a lucrative profession abroad, so Yu Qing had chosen it. Someone who worked with animals couldn’t be a bad person… right?
…
The Phone Call
“Hmm? Yu Qing?” The next morning, on the way to the hospital, Beige turned her head. “What do you want to ask?”
Weishu couldn’t help but ask how well Beige knew Yu Qing. “Well, you know,” Weishu tugged on her seatbelt, whispering, “she said she was coming back and told me to wait for her so she can hang out.”
Beige asked, “When?”
Weishu shook her head. “She hasn’t said yet.”
They passed an intersection, and Beige pulled over to a temporary parking spot. Right in front of Weishu, she made a call.
Beige got straight to the point. “When are you coming?”
Yu Qing must have been asleep. She sounded confused for a few seconds before saying uncertainly, “Next month, probably, if the flights don’t change.”
Beige hummed in acknowledgment. “Call me when you land. Weishu and I will arrange everything for you.”
Yu Qing mumbled a reply and hung up.
Weishu had her ears perked up for the entire call, and when it was over, she felt a little sour. “What are you calling her for?” Weishu’s question had a subtly aggressive tone.
Beige put her phone down and looked at her, confused. “Didn’t you ask about her?”
Weishu added, “You’ll arrange it? She’ll call you?”
Beige paused for a few seconds before explaining. “She’s the one who arranged my trip to the States to see you last time. We agreed then that she would contact me directly when she came to China to see you.”
That phone call was a physical demonstration of the relationship between Yu Qing and them. They were very close and knew each other well.
Weishu had gotten what she wanted, but for some reason, she felt a little uncomfortable. It was as if she were the least important person among the three of them. Weishu turned her head to look out the window, sulking silently for the entire drive.
Beige was quite sensitive to Weishu’s mood swings. She hesitated the whole way, and after pulling into the parking garage, she couldn’t help but say, “I’m not that close with Yu Qing. She’s the child of your parents’ friends. She went abroad when she was little and would come back during summer vacation. You’re the same age, so you would take her along to play with me… And later, you went to her place when you went abroad for high school. I went to find you once. That was the most recent time I saw her; it’s been about seven or eight years.”
Beige’s voice was low, like the bass notes of an expensive instrument. Her words were clear, and her soft voice was gentle on the ears. She had a goal of coaxing Weishu out of her mood, which made her voice sound even more pleasant.
Weishu had already started to feel better on the drive over. When she heard Beige trying to coax her, she barely had time to be surprised before a smile crept onto her face.
After her long explanation, Beige’s voice grew lower and lower until she finally said with a hint of regret, “If you mind that I’m directly communicating with your friend and not respecting your wishes… I won’t do it again.”
The smile on Weishu’s face froze.
Huh? What is she talking about?
Seeing Weishu’s expression, Beige sighed and leaned over to unbuckle her seatbelt, thinking, I knew it. Weishu had a strong sense of personal space and disliked others meddling in her affairs. Beige had just taken control of the situation without considering Weishu’s wishes, so of course she would be upset.
Weishu immediately placed her hand on Beige’s, covering it on her stomach. “What are you talking about?”
Beige looked up, puzzled.
Weishu tilted her head, blinking her almond eyes. “Do you think you disrespected me?”
Beige’s eyes looked even more confused.
Weishu pulled Beige’s hand closer to her stomach. Under her palm was her soft belly. The feeling was soft and warm. Beige was pulled forward at an angle. When she realized what was under her palm, the skin on her exposed neck instantly turned crimson. Beige had no idea what was happening and didn’t dare to pull her hand away for fear of hurting Weishu’s arm. “You, I…”
Weishu finished her sentence for her. “You have never ignored me, slighted me, or been disrespectful. Understand?”
Only then did Beige understand what Weishu was trying to do. Under Weishu’s slightly angry glare, Beige could only nod. “I understand… Now let go of me.”
Beige went back to her seat, opened the car door, and got out. She took several deep breaths to clear her head from the stuffy, intimate feeling.
Weishu didn’t know how effective her direct approach was, but she couldn’t stand seeing Beige so flustered and overly cautious. She thought, We’ll take it slow. I’ll use my time to prove to Beige that she doesn’t have to be so careful around me.
…
The Doctor’s Visit
The hospital was already crowded early in the morning. More and more cars were pouring into the parking lot. Beige and Weishu entered the elevator one after the other.
Weishu’s arm injury looked serious, but the skin wasn’t broken, and since the injury was in a difficult-to-move place, it healed quickly. The doctor looked at the scans and pressed on the wound before removing the cast, leaving only a small splint.
“The splint can also be removed in a few days. It’s not serious, and the prognosis is very good.”
Beige was worried about something else. “What about the mass in her head?”
Beige and Weishu sat across from the doctor, who was the same one as last time, Beige’s good friend, Dr. Shen Lan. “I have some good news and some bad news.” Shen Lan looked up at Beige first, then at Weishu.
Beige’s hand, which was resting on her knee, instantly tightened. The tension revealed her anxiety.
Weishu wasn’t very concerned about her own injury. She shook her head. “Just tell us everything.”
Shen Lan’s tone was straightforward. “Actually, it’s nothing major. The mass in her brain hasn’t expanded, so it’s not the worst-case scenario. But it hasn’t started to shrink either. Right now, it’s not getting worse, but it’s not getting better.”
After she said that, the patient didn’t react, but the person with her stood up. “Show me. Tell me how to read this.” Beige looked at the scan she couldn’t understand, feeling anxious. “This big mass in her brain, will it affect other areas?”
Shen Lan pointed to a few areas and patiently explained. “The right side of the mass is pressing on the memory-control area. As long as it doesn’t spread or grow, she’s fine now and will be fine later.”
Beige asked again, “Then why isn’t it shrinking?”
Shen Lan listed several possible reasons. “It’s possible the rate of absorption and growth are equal, or the brain’s absorption rate is too slow. The brain is a very mysterious organ. You have to believe in its self-healing abilities.”
Beige clearly didn’t believe her. She frowned for a long time before saying directly, “Can you even handle this?”
Dr. Shen Lan, who had calmly invited them into her office to carefully examine the scans and patiently explain everything, was speechless. How infuriating. People with a partner but no manners should get out. If it weren’t for her friendship with Beige, Shen Lan would have thrown her out.
“If you can do it, you go ahead,” Shen Lan said, rolling her eyes at Beige. She turned her head to look at Weishu. “Can you keep her in line?”
Weishu’s eyes widened. “Huh?” Weishu hesitated for a moment, then reached out and gently tugged on the corner of Beige’s shirt, pulling it down.
Beige frowned. “What are you doing?”
Weishu said softly, “Being in charge of you.”
Beige said, “…Oh.”
