After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 15
Chapter 15: Back Then
A Trip for Water
Weishu tugged on the corner of Beige’s shirt. “I’m thirsty. Can you go get me a bottle of water?”
Beige never refused Weishu’s requests. She immediately went to get it, even asking if there was a brand she preferred.
“No, anything is fine,” Weishu said with a sweet smile.
After Beige left, Shen Lan’s gaze fell on Weishu, and she observed her for a moment. “It seems losing your memory really does change a person.”
Weishu blinked in confusion. “For example?”
Shen Lan shook her head. She wasn’t close with Weishu—in fact, their relationship could even be called bad. Her comment was a spontaneous thought, and she didn’t intend to say more. “It’s nothing. I just feel like you’ve become a completely different person. Of course, I don’t know you that well, so just pretend I didn’t say anything.”
Weishu tilted her head and studied Shen Lan for a moment. “When did you and Beige meet?”
Shen Lan was organizing her files without looking up. “In college.”
Weishu did the math. “So, about ten years ago?”
Shen Lan didn’t respond. Weishu was silent for a few seconds, her voice dropping. “There’s something I want to ask you.”
Shen Lan looked up from her files, pushed up her glasses, and her voice was a little impatient. “You sent Beige away just to ask me that?”
Weishu shook her head, then nodded. Her voice dropped again, and she lowered her head. “I want to learn about myself. Beige said before that I like to eat seafood and that this habit didn’t change with my amnesia.”
Shen Lan had been the one to tell Beige that, so she nodded in confirmation.
Weishu looked up, her almond eyes flickering with doubt and confusion. “She also said it was because of a trauma response.”
Shen Lan’s voice was flat as she explained. “I’ve reviewed your past medical records. Based on the level and duration of the stress, it’s already part of your subconscious. The amnesia caused by your tumor is temporary. Since you were only able to eat seafood before you lost your memory… it’s highly likely that you would still be used to eating seafood afterward.”
Weishu knew this already. She wanted to ask a more important question. “So what happened that caused the trauma? Was there an incident?”
“That’s something I can’t tell you,” Shen Lan said, interrupting her. “Your past medical records don’t mention the reason for your trauma response.”
Weishu was at a complete loss for words. Her dejected expression, combined with her naturally sweet and innocent face, made her look as if she had been wronged.
Shen Lan glanced at her, and perhaps thinking of something, her voice grew even colder. “And of course, Beige doesn’t know about it either.”
Weishu looked up, her eyes lost. “What?”
Shen Lan said, “She once asked you, but you wouldn’t tell her. So she asked me to look into it for her. I couldn’t find anything, and you even came to the hospital to warn me and threatened to report me to the director.”
Weishu’s eyes grew wider and wider as Shen Lan spoke. Her expression shifted from confusion to guilt and embarrassment. “I… I didn’t know about any of this. I’m sorry.”
Shen Lan felt a bit pointless after saying all that, since Weishu couldn’t remember anything. “Why am I telling you all this? It’s pointless.”
They didn’t say much more before Beige came back with the water. Weishu quickly lowered her head to hide her expression. She didn’t look at Beige as she took the bottle, quietly saying, “Thank you.”
Beige glanced at her, then looked at Shen Lan with a questioning gaze.
Shen Lan just shrugged, indicating she had nothing to say.
Weishu stood up and said, “I’m going to the restroom.” She pushed the door open and left. Beige hesitated for a moment, then stayed in Shen Lan’s office.
Beige knocked on Shen Lan’s desk and frowned. “What did you two talk about?”
Shen Lan rolled her eyes. “None of your business.”
“Oh,” Beige said. “You’re in a bad mood.”
Shen Lan slammed her files down. “Your little miss asked me about her trauma response. That’s all. Believe it or not, I don’t care. Now get out.”
Beige remembered the trauma response incident; she had caused a lot of trouble for Shen Lan back then. “Ah… I see,” she said sheepishly.
But thinking about Weishu’s expression when she left, she couldn’t help but defend her. “Weishu doesn’t remember anything now. If you’re angry, you can take it out on me.”
Shen Lan laughed. “Why would I be angry at either of you? Is there anything else? I have a meeting to get to.”
Beige raised her hands and backed away, looking bewildered. “Okay, okay, I’m leaving.”
As she reached the door, Shen Lan calmed down and called out to her. “Beige, her amnesia is only temporary.”
Beige’s body froze. The door, which she had half-opened, stopped in the middle. She didn’t move or turn her head.
Shen Lan sighed. “Even if I admit that she’s like a completely different person after losing her memory, you should still know that she’s the same person.”
Beige’s fingers tightened on the doorknob, and her long eyelashes fell.
Shen Lan’s voice was earnest. “You shouldn’t feel that you’ve wronged her. Why should her past actions be completely erased just because she lost her memory? Your heart is softening now, isn’t it?”
Beige didn’t speak for a long time. She closed the door and stood with her back to Shen Lan, lost in thought. Seeing this, Shen Lan understood everything and felt truly sorry for her.
Shen Lan sighed. “That’s your choice. I won’t interfere, meddle, or comment. So don’t be so secretive with me.”
Beige’s back looked desolate and confused. Her voice was slow but firm. “I’ll always be in charge of her. It has nothing to do with what she did before. If I’m going to chase her or settle the score, I’ll wait until she remembers.”
“Besides, aren’t you curious about what happened to Weishu back then that made her suddenly change into a different person?”
Shen Lan didn’t say anything more. She was just as curious. What kind of experience could make a person’s personality change so drastically? What was the truth that Weishu had worked so hard to hide?
After speaking, Beige seemed to find her voice again. She turned her head and smiled. “This time, I want to figure out the truth from back then, and then we’ll talk about our past issues. Don’t worry, I won’t be too soft-hearted. Really.”
Shen Lan looked at her with disbelief. “Haha.”
Beige smiled wearily. “We’re both this age. I’ve waited so many years. Sometimes I feel like I’m so… something else. You can’t force these things. When her memory comes back, we’ll have a good talk. I’m so mature now, I’m a big boss. If there’s really no more feelings, then we can… part ways peacefully.”
Shen Lan looked at Beige blankly, feeling like the last few sentences sounded like she was about to cry.
Beige sniffled and turned to leave. “Weishu is probably waiting for me. I’m going now. I’ll come back for a check-up next week.”
Shen Lan saw her off for a few steps, and at the door, she wanted to say something but held back. In the end, she just said, “Take good care of yourself.”
Beige took a few deep breaths and patted her on the shoulder. “Stop it. Don’t hit me where it hurts.”
At the end of the hallway, Weishu stood silhouetted against the light. She waved with her right hand, tilted her head, and smiled. “Coming?”
Beige immediately put on a smile and walked towards her with big strides. “I’m coming.”
