After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 22
Chapter 22: Family
Bernice, wearing seductive makeup and a cool, Western-style cocktail dress, swayed gracefully as she got out of her car.
“President Bei, long time no see.”
They were in front of a villa, both competing for the same project. Beige faced forward, her eyes fixed on what was ahead of her. “It’s been a while.”
Bernice hooked her pinky finger and placed it on Beige’s shoulder, leaning in to whisper in her ear. “President Bei, you are so heartless. I asked you to meet so many times, but you wouldn’t give me the honor.”
Beige discreetly stepped away, her expression unchanged. “I’m sorry, but your perfume is a little strong.”
Bernice pouted. “Strong? What do you mean? I know President Bei doesn’t like it, so I specifically didn’t wear perfume today. Why are you making up a reason to accuse me?”
Beige’s eyebrow arched slightly. She glanced at her, a hint of mockery in her eyes. “Oh? You didn’t spray any perfume?”
Bernice pursed her lips. “I really didn’t.” Seeing that Beige was responding, she tried to lean in again, as if she had no bones in her body. “You have to apologize to me… Ah!”
Beige extended two fingers and pinched the back of her neck. Her fingers, long and slender but strong, wrapped around her neck, pressing on her carotid sinus. With a slight force, Bernice felt the world spin and almost fell to the ground.
Bernice’s bodyguards immediately stepped forward, all staring at Beige. Beige’s bodyguard also took a step forward, and the two sides faced off.
Beige calmly withdrew her hand, using her momentum to push Bernice toward her bodyguard. She pulled out a handkerchief to wipe her fingertips, her tone cold. “Keep an eye on your boss. She just came from a girl at ‘Jade,’ and the scent is so strong it can’t be covered up. It’s disgusting.”
Bernice’s head was spinning, and when she heard this, her bl00d rushed to her head in anger. “You!”
Beige adjusted her cuff, her voice flat. “Ms. Bernice, you probably only know that ‘Jade’ is the most famous nightclub in Yucheng, but you don’t know that their signature scent is a one-of-a-kind creation by a master perfumer. It’s so tacky that it takes a long time to get the smell off.”
At that moment, the villa door opened, and Beige walked in.
Bernice raised her arm and lowered her head to smell herself. She even had her bodyguards smell her, asking suspiciously, “Do I really have perfume on?”
The bodyguards all shook their heads. “No. ‘Jade’ is a nightclub. What kind of nightclub would use that scent? No one goes to a nightclub openly. That would just drive away customers…”
Bernice finally realized that Beige had completely made it up. She stomped her feet in anger, her eyes spitting fire. Gritting her teeth, she said, “Go, follow her! Even if we don’t get the project, we’ll ruin it for her!”
…
Zhou Yu looked back at Bernice, her voice filled with concern. “Boss, Bernice seems really angry.”
Beige said calmly, “I don’t care.”
Zhou Yu hesitated. “IKP’s influence is significant. If we get on their bad side, will they target us?”
Beige sneered. “Why wouldn’t I get on their bad side and leave them a chance to stick to me? Zhou Yu, we are a cybersecurity company. Our business involves a security domain. We absolutely cannot let a foreigner interfere. We shouldn’t even interact with them.”
Zhou Yu pouted and muttered softly, glancing at Beige’s wedding ring. “Do you just hate foreigners, or do you just hate her?”
Beige said, “I heard that.”
Zhou Yu lowered her head and pressed her lips together, pretending to be mute.
During the initial discussions for this project, Kuangye Company had already gained the upper hand. The client had expressed a clear desire to partner with Kuangye. If Bernice had any sense, she wouldn’t have tried to get in the way today.
Beige turned around, her tone a little stern and commanding. “Don’t think I don’t know how many people in our company she’s tried to seduce from top to bottom, deliberately trying to cause trouble. Remind every department for me that if anyone has any inappropriate contact with Bernice, they shouldn’t expect me to be merciful.”
Zhou Yu saw that Beige was serious. Her heart tightened, and she quickly agreed. “Yes, I understand.”
…
The villa belonged to Mr. Feng, a director of the Hanbian Group. Hanbian Group was a massive company, with holdings in real estate, banking, education, energy, information technology, and many other industries. Getting a connection to one of its directors would be extremely beneficial for the development of Kuangye Company.
Beige was fully prepared. After the initial small talk, she got straight to the point, briefly summarizing Kuangye Company’s services in three minutes and skillfully highlighting her company’s superiority and uniqueness.
“As you can see, the Kuangye System is a closed system with nested internal and external networks. While it sacrifices some openness, the user experience and security performance are excellent.”
Mr. Feng was about forty years old, with graying hair at his temples, but he showed no signs of aging. He radiated a powerful presence just by sitting there. His gaze was sharp. “As far as I know, IKP has a similar system. Is there any fundamental difference between your two companies?”
Beige looked up, her smile unwavering. Her tone was humble. “Both are third-generation security systems. From the systems themselves, I don’t believe there is a difference in their updates or generations. But a system is just a tool. The key is how people use it, as post-maintenance and user data processing are huge undertakings. Kuangye Company works with public security agencies, and all of our employees have gone through background checks to ensure their security. At the same time, we have different rules for each department based on the importance of the position, to prevent any leaks from the source.”
Beige’s conversation was well-reasoned and logical from beginning to end, and her attitude was neither servile nor overbearing. Even the Hanbian Group, known for its high standards, was moved by her sincerity.
Mr. Feng smiled. “Then I’ll congratulate you in advance, President Bei.”
Beige suppressed her inner joy and nodded calmly. “It’s your great insight that you are willing to give us this opportunity. Rest assured, Kuangye Company will not disappoint you.”
After the project was settled, Mr. Feng and Beige had a casual chat, moving from hobbies to real estate investment, and finally back to their industry. Mr. Feng’s smile became more genuine. He would nod from time to time. “I didn’t expect a young woman like you to have such surprising insight and vision.”
Beige smiled gracefully. “You’re too kind. The younger generation stands on your shoulders to see the world. But I’ve heard that you have an extensive network in the industry, and your information is extremely well-sourced. Getting a word of advice from you before investing in any industry can save a person years of detours.”
Everyone loves a compliment. Mr. Feng shook his head with a smile. “You only say nice things.” After saying that, he took a sip of tea and, without letting Beige speak again, took the initiative. “Tell me, is there something you need help with?”
Beige smiled shyly and said softly, “There is one thing. I’d like to ask you about something from the past.”
Mr. Feng’s eyes narrowed, his sharp gaze falling on the tea leaves in his cup. “Tell me about it.”
Beige pondered for a moment, her voice sincere. “I’d like to know what happened to the Wei family of Jincheng a few years ago.”
…
Ten minutes later, just as their hands clasped in the air, the door was pushed open and a group of people burst in.
Bernice’s hair was a mess. She had been blocked by the villa’s staff. Her patience had already run out, and through the floor-to-ceiling windows, she saw the two of them chatting happily and then rising to shake hands. She was so desperate that she couldn’t hold back anymore.
“President Bei, your methods are not very honorable,” Bernice said, her eyes filled with venom. It was easy to guess that Beige had used her foreign identity as a way to get ahead.
Bernice turned to Mr. Feng. “Please give me one minute. I think a director like you shouldn’t listen to her one-sided story, lest you be fooled by her flowery words.”
Beige’s expression didn’t change. She didn’t try to stop Bernice. She remained calm and composed from start to finish, simply moving her body slightly to shield the director in a subconscious act of protection.
Mr. Feng watched both of their movements and expressions in silence. He let out a cold “hmph.” “Go on, speak.”
Bernice took a deep breath. “President Bei says her employees have clean backgrounds, but I have a private photo of your head of PR on my phone.”
Mr. Feng frowned, looking at Beige with displeasure.
Beige was unfazed. She calmly explained. “Hua Ni is my junior from college. She’s a go-getter but lacks a certain stability. I put her in the PR department to leverage her strengths and avoid her weaknesses. Her authority is limited, and she doesn’t have access to any confidential information.”
The look of displeasure in Mr. Feng’s eyes faded a little.
Beige chuckled softly and tilted her head. She said to Bernice, “And you, you’ve gone to great lengths to get in touch with Hua Ni. Did you find out about any of Kuangye’s core technologies? IKP’s security system crashed just yesterday. Have you cleaned up the snow on your own roof?”
Bernice was about to argue, but Beige’s expression had already turned cold.
“This is my final warning to you, Bernice. I am a person with a family. If you keep sending me inappropriate photos of yourself, without any dignity or shame, I will absolutely make sure they appear where they should appear.”
Bernice’s face went instantly pale. At first, Beige had been polite to her, never speaking harshly. But today, she was acting completely out of character. This was a move meant to kill, not just a person, but their very spirit.
