After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 23
Chapter 23: Local Specialties
Seeing the situation, Mr. Feng understood everything. He turned to Bernice and stated his position. “Ms. Bernice, you might not understand our Chinese culture. When we choose a partner, in addition to their qualifications, we also value their character.”
Bernice gritted her teeth and said with forced bravery, “I think there might be a misunderstanding. Kuangye Company’s Head of PR is not having a private affair with me, but rather fell in love with President Bei at first sight…”
“Please watch your words,” Beige interrupted her, a clear look of anger on her face. “I am a person with a family, and we are very much in love. Please don’t slander anyone with baseless accusations.”
Mr. Feng sighed and waved a hand to the people behind him. Bodyguards immediately came in to take Bernice away. Bernice was clearly not giving up. As she was being led out, she stared furiously at Beige, her eyes filled with a look that seemed to want to eat her alive. Beige stared back, not flinching.
Mr. Feng said reassuringly to Beige, “My staff told me about the argument you had with her at the door earlier.”
Beige was a little surprised. “…I apologize for the foul language.”
“No, no, no,” Mr. Feng shook his head with a smile. His eyes fell on Beige’s wedding ring. “President Bei, you’re young and accomplished, one of the most talented women I’ve ever met. I was originally thinking of playing matchmaker, but it seems I would have been getting in the way.”
Beige smiled and lowered her head. The moment she saw the wedding ring, her eyes softened. “You’re too kind. As for her, I love her very much. It’s my fault for not making our relationship public, causing others to misunderstand. I’ll be more careful in the future.”
Mr. Feng smiled and nodded, his eyes looking at Beige with even more satisfaction. She was young, accomplished, loyal to her partner, with a clear mind and an upright character—an excellent person to partner with.
…
That afternoon, Beige went fishing and played golf with Mr. Feng. That night, they grilled fish on the lawn. The next day, they spent the entire day in a tea room. The two of them slowly combined leisure with business, finally finalizing the details of the partnership and signing the contract.
This business trip had gone much more smoothly than Beige had expected.
Beige sent Zhou Yu back early, with instructions for Hua Ni to work from home. If she didn’t properly reflect on her actions, she wouldn’t need to come back to the company. Hua Ni didn’t have bad intentions, and her work ability was strong, but her conduct was lacking in stability. It was time to give her a little shock to make her reflect. As for Bernice, a public break with her was inevitable. The cake of Jincheng was big, but Bernice wasn’t allowed to take a bite, as she would ruin the whole cake.
With all this done, Beige’s work was all wrapped up, and the rest was her personal time.
The city she was in was Liancheng, a famous tourist city in the southwest of Jincheng, with various ethnic minorities selling local specialties. The climate was hot and humid, there was a river running through the city, and its sweet, sticky pastries and river seafood were famous throughout the country.
Thinking of a certain someone at home who loved eating seafood, Beige raised her hand and made a call.
“Weishu,” the moment the call connected, Beige’s voice rose happily. “I’m finished with work here. Is there anything you want me to bring back? I can get you some local specialties.”
On the screen, Weishu’s face was only half-visible. She seemed dazed for a moment after Beige spoke, her reaction slow. “…I don’t have an appetite. I want to wear one of those ethnic minority dresses from over there.”
Beige, who knew every one of her little expressions, immediately asked, “No appetite? Didn’t you sleep well?”
Weishu spoke with a blatant lie. “I couldn’t sleep last night because I was thinking about you. It’s hard to sleep alone.”
After just discovering a bunch of pills of unknown origin, who could stop their mind from racing? Weishu hadn’t slept at all the night before, tossing and turning and guessing at all kinds of possibilities. Unfortunately, after waking up, she had been so lazy and had already formed such a bad impression of her past self that she wasn’t interested in learning about it. So there was no information for her to analyze, and she couldn’t figure anything out. Besides, the lab results wouldn’t be back for half a month, so she was trying to get her mind right and ignore the whole thing, otherwise, all that overthinking would just wear her out.
Weishu couldn’t tell Beige any of this, so she just changed the subject.
Beige was silent for a few seconds. She didn’t know whether to believe her or not. “Tell me, how many cups of coffee did you have?”
On Weishu’s end, there were a few crackling noises. Her voice suddenly became unclear. “Huh—what—the signal is bad…”
Beige asked, “Hmong or Yi?”
“Dai, thank you, my darling, I have to go, bye!”
Staring at the disconnected call on her phone, Beige chuckled, then shook her head helplessly. She was just like she was when she was a child; when you talked to her, she pretended she couldn’t hear you, but if you gave her candy, she would listen.
Thinking of Weishu’s childish antics, Beige’s smile grew more and more indulgent. Fine, let her stay up late. I’ll make sure she gets to bed early when I get back.
Just then, a small girl ran over. She was holding cotton candy and it got stuck on Beige’s clothes when she bumped into her.
“I’m so sorry,” the girl’s older brother ran over, covered in sweat. Seeing that Beige’s clothes were dirty, he was both terrified and apologetic. “She’s just a child and doesn’t know any better. Your clothes are dirty. I’ll pay for them.”
The brother looked to be about seventeen or eighteen. He was wearing a white, round hat, and his face was dark and thin, but his eyes were bright.
“Are you from an ethnic minority?” Beige casually pulled at the hem of her dress. The clothes were expensive, but she didn’t have a habit of making people pay for a little stain, especially since both of them were just kids. “Which one?”
The brother was stunned for a moment, but he answered honestly. “Hui.”
Beige thought for a moment, then crouched down and said to the little girl, “I want to buy some Dai clothing. Do you know where I can get some? It has to be authentic, not sold in a tourist area, and preferably good quality, bought directly from a Dai family.”
The little girl held her cotton candy, her big eyes blinking. “I know. My brother can take you.”
Beige pinched her soft cheek and said softly, “Okay.”
The little girl’s black eyes were round, big, and full of life. She kept stealing glances at Beige along the way, and when she was caught, she would blush and smile at her. That look made Beige’s heart feel soft, and she couldn’t help but think of Weishu as a child.
Weishu had never lacked princess dresses since she was a little girl. To outsiders, she always looked like a little princess, with a baby face and big, watery eyes, giving people the illusion that she needed to be protected. However, if you added a little willfulness and a pampered attitude to that little princess, she could become completely unreasonable, and no matter how cute she was, she could become unlikable. Children can be willful and unreasonable, but people’s tolerance for different children varies.
That year, Weishu’s family was going on a vacation, and Weishu found out she would be separated from Beige for over ten days. She immediately cried so much it seemed like the sky was falling. Weishu’s mother had no choice but to take her hand and go to Beige’s house to ask if she could borrow her.
At the time, Beige’s mother had saved up some money to send Beige to a cram school. Beige’s grades were excellent in school, but recently they had been declining because Weishu’s constant interruptions had kept her from finishing her homework. Beige’s mother was already anxious. She wouldn’t even let her work, wanting to focus entirely on her studies, so she refused at first. The Jiang family, who employed Beige’s mother, respected her wishes and politely declined Weishu and her mother.
When Weishu couldn’t take Beige with her, she refused to go. She clung to a decorative pillar at the door, wrapping herself around it like a koala. Tears poured down her face. She refused to eat and threw a fit, demanding to see Beige.
Everyone except Beige’s mother couldn’t bear to see this. Beige felt bad for Weishu and didn’t think her grades had anything to do with her. She took the initiative to beg her mother to let her go.
“Child, it’s because your mother isn’t capable,” Beige’s mother looked at her with a complicated expression, a mix of guilt and humiliation. She gently stroked Beige’s head, but her voice was firm. “When I save enough money, we’ll leave. I won’t let you stay in this environment forever.”
Beige shook her head, without a trace of humiliation on her face. “Mom, you work so hard. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being here.”
Her young pride had already become self-sufficient and strong with each passing day. Besides, she really liked Weishu now, and being with the person she liked, she didn’t feel wronged at all.
Weishu got her wish and took Beige home. The group went to a resort in the mountains, but they didn’t expect a landslide to happen halfway through the journey. Beige and Weishu were separated from the adults, and the situation was critical.
Beige protected Weishu as they climbed up the mountain. She climbed until she was completely exhausted and passed out. Before she lost consciousness, she saw the sliding mud and only had time to yell at Weishu to go up.
When she woke up, Beige found that Weishu hadn’t left. Instead, she had used all her strength to drag her into a cave. Weishu was covered in mud, her hair was a mess, and she looked more pathetic than a beggar. When she saw Beige was awake, her frightened, trembling eyes instantly lit up. She happily buried her face in Beige’s chest, and all her fear came out as silent tears. “You’re finally awake.”
Beige had only passed out from exhaustion and was fine after waking up. She stroked Weishu’s head and asked her why she didn’t leave. Weishu, who was only eight years old at the time, didn’t understand anything. She just cried and said she wanted to be with Beige.
Again, “together.” They wanted to play together, and when a life-threatening situation arose, she still wanted to be with her.
Beige smiled and cursed affectionately, “You little fool. Don’t cry anymore. You’re going to get my clothes wet.”
Weishu pouted, wiping her big eyes with her dirty little hands, and said softly, “They were already wet.”
The two of them were rescued quickly. Weishu’s father mobilized fire and rescue forces from the surrounding provinces and brought them back unharmed. However, Beige’s mother almost went crazy with worry, and after that, she was rarely willing to let Beige go out to play with Weishu.
