After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 25.2
Chapter 25.2: A Test
“Do you think this poetry looks familiar?”
“I didn’t look closely, but no, it’s not. First time I’ve seen it.”
“Then do you think the recipient’s name looks familiar?”
Weishu tapped the photo, zoomed in, and after a few seconds, read the name out loud. “Doris? The sea goddess? And… ‘Ah Shui’? What a random name.”
“I know, the sea goddess. The mother of Thetis, Achilles’ grandmother.”
“Who’s talking to you about Greek mythology…”
“Then what are you trying to say?”
“Oh, I can’t explain it to you. Just check your phone and see if you added these two people on WeChat.”
Half a minute later, Weishu sent a shaking head emoji. “Tell me, is she someone you have a crush on? Did I add her?”
“Why is it ‘she’? I don’t like women!”
“Why the quick reply? Doris is a female name, thank you very much.”
Yu Qing’s cover was blown, and she lost face completely, angrily ending the conversation. Now she had a new plan. She wouldn’t say a word. Unless Weishu begged her, she shouldn’t even think about getting Yu Qing to voluntarily tell her about the love letters!
Weishu’s thoughts had gone completely off track. She thought she had found the truth. Yu Qing had written a love letter and wanted to send it, but was too embarrassed, so she was discreetly asking her friends for the person’s contact information.
Weishu was completely unaware of the truth. She subconsciously assumed “Doris” and “Ah Shui” were the same person, for no reason at all. After unilaterally sending over a dozen messages to poke fun at Yu Qing, Weishu stretched and went downstairs for a meal.
Beige had a meeting, and she had heard the car leave the garage early that morning. By now, she was likely at the company.
Weishu’s embarrassment from the previous night, when her seduction had been met with rejection, had mostly dissipated after a night of deep sleep. However, she still maintained a stubborn, arrogant attitude, ignoring Beige’s “good night” and “good morning” texts. She washed her face, brushed her teeth, ate, played with the cat, and took a cab to work.
She had also decided not to go home, staying at the office to pull out all the unqualified designs from the studio this year and “whip the corpses” to complete her overhaul from top to bottom.
Weishu spent five days in a calm and pleasant manner.
Then, on Monday, she was reminded by Kong Qin of a conspicuous Lotus parked outside the window. It was a classic Lotus, a five-door, five-seat hatchback. The design was cool and extravagantly inhumane.
Weishu expressionlessly pulled the blinds shut.
Kong Qin had been working overtime with her for the past few days. Dark circles hung under her eyes, and she yawned continuously. “That’s enough. Go home early. You can handle it, but I’m getting old. I need my rest.”
Weishu waved her hand. “You rest. You don’t need to come in this afternoon. I’m just going to reorganize everything one more time.”
Kong Qin peered out the blinds and immediately changed the subject. “That car is really nice. The person in it is good-looking too. Beige rolled down her window and is waiting for you.”
Weishu was printing documents and highlighting key points.
Kong Qin grew more and more excited. “Wow, all the girls from the studio went downstairs. They’re all taking pictures and fawning over her.”
Weishu paused, then scoffed. “Haven’t they ever seen a beautiful woman before?”
Kong Qin clicked her tongue. “Tsk tsk, Beige got out of the car to take a picture with someone. They make a perfect pair. It’s truly a sight for sore eyes.”
Weishu slammed her documents down and walked away.
Kong Qin sent a message in the group chat: “Mission accomplished. All you actors can scatter. The shift for today is over.”
When the girls from the studio heard that the boss’s partner was coming, they were unenthusiastic. They didn’t want to watch the boss show off her love. But the moment the car window rolled down, their passive work ethic instantly turned into an active pursuit. They swarmed Beige, like birds swooping down for food, and surrounded her.
They got addicted to the act, crowding around Beige until she couldn’t move. Beige’s smile was close to slipping. Her eyes kept falling on the second floor. Kong Qin had promised to get Weishu down within three minutes! But all she got was a bunch of wild beasts. Where was her wife?
This girl, please don’t leave lipstick marks on my clothes. Don’t pinch my shoulder; I don’t have muscles, and it tickles. Don’t touch my hair; I just got it styled…
“What are you all doing?”
Weishu had changed into a pair of heels before she left. She leaned against the doorway, her handbag on her arm, her eyes cold and aloof. Her presence was a full six feet tall.
Sure enough, the boss had a kind of species-level suppression over her employees. The girls who had been like wolves and tigers in front of Beige turned into timid quails. They lowered their heads and scurried back inside.
Beige looked at Weishu as she walked over and gave her a thumbs-up. “You’re amazing. You cleared the entire space.”
Weishu lifted her chin, her eyes looking down at Beige, and she snorted coldly.
Beige reached out, her two fingers pinching Weishu’s chin, turning her face toward her, and gave her a peck on the lips. “Alright, being cold and aloof doesn’t suit you. Get in the car; I’m taking you home.”
Weishu shook off her hand and got into the passenger seat, secretly touching her lips. In the car, Beige saw her absently touching her lips. While starting the car, she chuckled. “What, you don’t approve?”
Weishu looked up at her, utterly honest. “I do.”
Beige was stunned for a moment, then laughed. “That’s all you have to say?”
Weishu thought for a moment, then frowned. “What does that mean?”
Beige held the steering wheel, her eyes on the road. Her voice was steady. “It doesn’t mean anything. It just means I did some profound self-reflection and I want to treat you better.”
If Weishu didn’t remember anything now, no matter how much past resentment or love-hate conflict they had, she couldn’t feel it. If Beige couldn’t figure it out herself, she would be like a trapped beast, imprisoning herself and unable to break free.
So, she had decided to let it go.
“Do you want to start dating me from the beginning?” Weishu’s question was incredibly innocent, her expression simple, her eyes pure.
Beige looked at her and her heart couldn’t help but melt into a puddle. She took one hand off the wheel to gently rub Weishu’s head. “Yes, let’s date, and I’ll love you,” Beige said with no emotional burden. She had wanted to say this for a long time, and she was already doing it. “Is that okay with you?”
Weishu lowered her head, again answering honestly. “Yes.”
Since she had woken up, Beige had been in a constant state of internal conflict. If she could just figure things out on her own, Weishu would be much happier. Thinking about this, Weishu couldn’t help but lift her head and lightly hum a few tunes. The corners of her eyes and eyebrows lit up as if they were glowing.
Beige glanced at her, a little surprised. She was so obedient and well-behaved. Just a few nice words could make her happy. She was so simple and pure. “How are you so much like you were when you were little?” Beige sighed with a low laugh.
Weishu pulled out a photo on her phone. “Is this me?”
The traffic light ahead turned red, and Beige stopped the car to look at the photo. She was stunned for a moment before she nodded. “It is.”
The photo was a family portrait of Weishu. A young Weishu, holding her parents’ arms, swinging in the middle. Beige hadn’t reacted at first because Weishu’s parents looked too young in the picture, in their thirties, a handsome couple who should have been a happy family.
“My eyes look like hers, and my mouth looks like his,” Weishu looked at it for a while, then closed the photo. “Nothing else.”
Beige smiled. “Are your eyes okay, Master Designer? Your features are clearly a copy of your childhood. Most people grow out of it, but you just grew up in proportion.”
Weishu was quiet for a moment, then said in a small voice, “I meant I look like my mom’s eyes and my dad’s mouth.”
Beige was silent for a long time. When the light turned green, she gently stroked Weishu’s head. “If you miss them, we can go to the cemetery to see them.”
Weishu gently shook her head. The sunlight outside the window refracted through her clear pupils, flickering. “Let’s wait until my arm is healed.”
Thinking of her parents, even though she had no memory, a faint warmth rose in her heart. And in her current state, with a broken arm and a sick mind, what was the point of going to the cemetery? She would only make them worry even after they were gone.
Beige didn’t say anything else.
“Where are we going?” Weishu realized the route was different from the one they usually took to go home.
Beige said a restaurant name. “My colleagues said this restaurant has good food. I’m taking you to try it.”
Weishu touched her stomach. “Okay.” She was hungry too.
But the next moment, Beige’s hand reached over and covered her stomach, pressing down. The strength and warmth of her palm passed through her clothes and onto Weishu’s skin. Weishu’s stomach was a soft place, and having it touched and pressed made her instinctively smack Beige’s hand. “Get off.”
Beige withdrew her hand, laughing. “You didn’t eat breakfast again?” Her stomach was soft and a little caved in. It was empty, which meant she either hadn’t eaten or had only drunk coffee.
“Work was too busy,” Weishu complained softly.
Weishu had been busy with work the past few days and had been skipping meals. The takeout Beige had ordered for her had been given to everyone by Kong Qin.
“You have dozens of people working under you. You need to learn how to delegate,” Beige said. “Your chin is so much thinner these past few days.”
Weishu looked at her from the corner of her eye, using the same words to block her. “You too.”
Beige laughed. “I’m not that busy. If I don’t want to work overtime, I can leave whenever I want.”
Weishu thought of the scale of Beige’s company and felt a pang of jealousy. It really couldn’t be compared.
The restaurant was in the city center, not far away. They arrived quickly. They didn’t want to be wasteful, so they only ordered four dishes. Weishu had a poor appetite and no interest in eating, but with Beige picking up food for her one chopstick at a time, she ate a lot, and her stomach was completely full.
“You’re even eating roasted chicken now?” Beige praised her continuously, and Weishu was a little embarrassed. “You eat your food. Everyone is looking at you.”
Beige was in high spirits. “I’m happy. You used to only eat seafood, pure seafood. I would cook it over and over again to remove the purine, and you’d say it didn’t taste like seafood. I was so afraid you’d get gout every day.”
Weishu chewed the chicken in her mouth. It was turkey, a bit dry, but flavorful, and not bad. “How do I explain it? It feels like I’m not eating food, but my heart knows it’s food. It’s not poisonous. It’s like a normal person eating paper or raw meat. It’s a strange feeling.” Weishu ate very slowly and occasionally frowned, but at least she wasn’t spitting the food out.
Beige saw that her aversion to food was getting better, and she was so happy. She ordered a few more dishes and put them in front of Weishu to try, like a blind box. “We agreed not to be wasteful,” Weishu said with a small frown. “I can’t eat anymore.”
“Then we’ll get it to go and heat it up tonight.” Beige had plenty of money.
Now that they had talked things through, their relationship was much more harmonious. Weishu’s mind relaxed, and she was a heavy sleeper to begin with. The past few days of overtime had made her sleep poorly, so she fell asleep in the car. Beige didn’t wake her when she parked the car. She simply carried her out.
“Ding-Dong, don’t block the way. Your mom is tired.”
Ding-Dong had been waiting behind the door and meowed excitedly when she saw they had both come home.
Weishu was half-awake from the cat’s meows and finally saw whose arms she was in. “Go back to sleep,” Beige said in a low voice, a tenderness she herself didn’t even notice. Weishu’s head nodded, and she buried her face in Beige’s chest and went back to sleep.
When Beige put her on the bed, Weishu woke up again. This time, she didn’t open her eyes. She reached for Beige’s wrist and didn’t let go, insisting that she sleep with her.
“You haven’t changed into your pajamas, darling,” Beige reminded her in a low voice.
Weishu opened one eye and grumbled. “…you help me.”
Beige was speechless. This person had no bottom line when she acted spoiled.
Beige dutifully took her clothes off, changed her into pajamas, and changed into a pair herself. “Go to sleep,” Weishu said, pulling Beige down.
“My room is downstairs,” Beige said helplessly. The bed was two meters wide, which was big enough, but there was only one blanket. “You have to let me go get a blanket, right?”
Weishu closed her eyes and frowned, annoyed that Beige was being so chatty. She lifted the blanket and wrapped her arms around Beige’s arm. Then, because she had forgotten about her injured arm in her sleep, she moved it, and it hurt so much she bounced up from the bed.
“Don’t move, you little dummy,” Beige said, a mix of annoyance and helplessness. She held her shoulders, helped her lie on her side, and gently put her left arm on top of the blanket.
Weishu was so sleepy. She rubbed her eyes and lightly patted the blanket with her left hand. “Just sleep here… and don’t talk anymore.”
Beige lay down, snuggling up to Weishu’s shoulder. The warm, soft feeling spread through her body, and with a beautiful woman in her arms, she quickly fell into a sweet dream.
They slept soundly, and when they woke up, the afternoon sun had set, and it was exactly three o’clock. “What do you want to do this afternoon?” Beige asked with a smile when she saw Weishu open her eyes.
Weishu lazily hugged her waist and buried her face in her chest to wake up. With a slight nasal tone, she said, “The flowers at home have been doing the splits.”
Beige couldn’t help but laugh. “Then let’s prune them together.”
“I had a dream,” Weishu said, rubbing her waist and sitting up. Her hair was a mess, and her face was a little pale. “I dreamed that I absolutely hated eating seafood.”
Beige was stunned. “There’s a good dream like that?”
Weishu glared at her, emphasizing, “I genuinely hated it. I would throw up just from smelling seafood.”
“That’s impossible, baby. For the past few years, you’ve really only eaten seafood.” Beige raised her hand to pat her head, and she self-reflected. “Did I overcorrect because I always told you to eat less seafood?”
The feeling in the dream was unusually clear, an aversion to the smell of seafood as if it were a nightmare. In the dream, there were also many dead fish and rotting shrimp, all smelling of rot and decay.
“Sure enough, dreams and reality are opposites.” Weishu shook her head, clearing the images from her mind, and slowly got out of bed. She had slept little these past few days, so she had slept very soundly during her nap and could still remember the dream’s details. She didn’t know why, but she had been dreaming more these past few days. Most of the time, she didn’t remember them after waking up. It seemed that working overtime really affected her sleep quality. She really needed to go to bed on time.
Half an hour later.
“Darling, your phone is ringing.”
Beige had changed into a comfortable set of athletic leisure clothes. When she knocked and came in, she saw Weishu’s phone blinking on the bed. Weishu’s voice came from the bathroom, muffled. “…Can you check it for me?”
Weishu had a habit of brushing her teeth after eating seafood. She had fallen asleep after lunch and couldn’t stand it when she woke up. She was busy washing her face, brushing her teeth, combing her hair, and applying face cream.
Beige walked over and picked up the phone. Just as she was about to say, “It’s an alarm,” she saw the phone screen show a successful face scan and automatically unlock.
Weishu had registered her face in the unlock system? When had she done that? And why would she record her face… Beige instinctively looked away. She didn’t have a habit of checking her partner’s phone, and she was a little stunned, unsure of how to react. After a few seconds, Beige moved her gaze back.
The screen that automatically unlocked was Weishu and Yu Qing’s chat window. When they had been eating lunch, Yu Qing had likely just woken up and had sent her routine “good morning.” Weishu had sent her a picture of the turkey, and Yu Qing had said it wasn’t authentic without even looking. They had a brief argument until Beige reminded her to eat properly.
Looking at it now, it was the same screen from back then. Weishu’s cursing was childish, and her emojis were cute and silly. Beige glanced at it and couldn’t help but laugh, reaching out to press the power button to turn off the screen.
Weishu’s phone case was made of resin. It was thick and hard, and the power button was already difficult to press. Plus, with the random three-dimensional stickers on the back, it was unstable. Beige’s hand slipped, and the screen slid upwards, a few quick swipes, before slowly stopping on their chat history from a few days ago.
“Do you know Doris and Ah Shui?”
“No.”
Doris. Ah Shui.
Beige’s face, which had been smiling just moments ago, instantly turned to ice.
The two names were like foul droplets of water, violently smashing down from ten thousand feet in the air, plunging Beige into a suffocatingly dark space.
